Local Mulgoa Student Appointed as Ambassador for Denmark Ambassadors are usually appointed among diplomats and it is definitely not common that Ambassadors are young people still attending university. This is however the case with former Mulgoa resident, Elisabeth Paul. She has just been chosen as Youth Goodwill Ambassador of Denmark, the small Nordic country often referred to as the world’s happiest nation. The job is to advocate student exchange, intercultural knowledge and career opportunities. “It is an honour and very exciting”, says the newly appointed Youth Goodwill Ambassador, Elisabeth Paul. Elisabeth is a 26 old student of Cognition and Communication studying a full degree at the University of Copenhagen. Last September, she graduated from a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology from the University of Western Sydney (UWS), Kingswood. As part of her studies, she undertook a six-month student exchange to the University of Copenhagen, and it was this experience that inspired her to apply for a Masters programme back in Denmark: “Going on a UWS exchange was the best decision I made during my degree. I feel so lucky to have found out about life and opportunities in Denmark, and I want to pass on that knowledge so that others can be inspired to try it for themselves. Continued Pg... 3

From the Editor As we come to the end of 2013, it is timely to reflect upon all that has happened over the past 12 months. Hasn’t the year just raced by? The first part, a flurry of the usual activity, the constant chasing of tails and getting nowhere, the latter part marred by devastating fires, followed by torrential rains. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people affected by the bushfires and storms. May the Christmas season bring some hope and joy to your lives. This time of year we tend to spend extra time with those near and dear. It is with great sadness that we farewell a very dear friend of ours, and to many of you, Allan. Our hearts go out to his friends and family and all that knew him. More information on page 7. As always, we have some excellent reading to get you right into the Christmas Spirit, not to mention some truly delightful Christmas recipes on page 13. If you’re rushing around for those last minute gifts, don’t despair, the award winning Lollylicious will be at Glenmore Park Town Centre from 9th December until Christmas Eve with their spectacular chocolate display including, Teacher Gifts, Christmas trees, Bouquets and all sorts of sweet delights. See their ad on page 13. For now, as the most special time of the year for children approaches, I will end by wishing every reader, their families and friends, a happy, peaceful and restful Christmas season and may you all enjoy good health, peace of mind and happiness in 2014. We’ll be back in February to keep you up to date on all the goings-on around your neighbourhood!

interdisciplinary research is encouraged, and the campus is stunning. The city is also so liveable - transport within the city and to the rest of Europe is easy, rent and groceries are cheaper than Sydney, the nightlife is great, yand there are plenty of parks. So, I applied to become a Youth Goodwill Ambassador of Denmark and I am very excited that I was accepted. My role is to promote Denmark to my peers in Australia, with the overall objective of sharing my personal story about international student mobility to foster intercultural exchange and global career opportunities. It’s an amazing opportunity and definitely feels like a fairytale”, says Elisabeth. Denmark, home to Princess Mary and The Little Mermaid, is a small country often recognized for the high educational level among its citizens, its unique welfare system and for being a global green leader with a high GDP. Well known companies include shipping giant Maersk and toy manufacturer LEGO. According to Denmark’s Economic Council of the Labour Movement (ECLM), Danish companies will by 2020 be short of up to 21,000 employees holding a higher education. So if Denmark wants to retain its position as a globally acknowledged country of innovation, it is crucial to attract and retain foreign talent. When it comes to studying in Denmark, Elisabeth and her fellow international students mention the high quality of life, teaching methods and academic standards of the universities as well as job opportunities as the main reasons to head for Denmark while studying. When asked about what it is that makes Copenhagen special, Elisabeth replies: “There are so many reasons that it’s good to study here, but for me it’s all about the study environment. My subjects are taught in English,

When to Put Up the Tree Traditionally, Christmas trees were not brought in and decorated until Christmas Eve or, in the traditions celebrating Christmas Eve rather than on the first of day of Christmas, 23 December, and then removed the day after Twelfth Night (5 January); to have a tree up before or after these dates was even considered bad luck. In many areas, it has become customary to set up one’s Christmas tree at the beginning of the Advent season. In Australia, the Christmas tree is usually put up on 1st December, except for South Australia, where most people put up their tree after the Adelaide Christmas Pageant in late November. Some traditions suggest that Christmas trees may be kept up until no later than 2 February, the feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple (Candlemas), when the Christmas season effectively closes.

Really Useful Christmas Gifts
As a cynical male, I come to Christmas gift giving with the default understanding that it is about commercial exploitation, consumer expenditure, retail trading, and giving over-indulged kids overpriced junk that will be discarded within a matter of weeks. Sadly, this is often true of Christmas. But there is another way to think of gift giving that can redeem the Christmas gift giving tradition. It is a way of thinking about giving Christmas gifts that C S Lewis portrays in a beautiful scene in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. The problem in Narnia is that it is winter but never Christmas. But the true King, Aslan, has come, so the witches’ power is breaking. So Father Christmas arrives, bright and jolly as ever, to give presents to the children, Peter, Susan and Lucy. ‘These are your presents’, says Father Christmas, ‘and they are tools not toys. The time to use them is perhaps near at hand.’ (chapter 10). Father Christmas gives Peter a sword and shield, Susan a bow and arrows and a horn, and Lucy a bottle of potion and a dagger. Father Christmas was equipping the children for the war at hand. There is a similar scene in J R R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The elves of Loth Lorien and their queen Galadriel give the 9 companions gifts for their trek to Mordor. These gifts are not trinkets. They are precious and vital provisions and weapons that will enable them to survive a perilous journey. Now, for very young children, of course, toys are tools. They learn by playing. And learning should be fun. But the motive of gift giving in these two fantasy scenarios is very different to the one that says, ‘I’ll give you whatever you want to indulge you, stop your whingeing, and get you off my back’. Rather, this gift giving knows the person to whom the gift is given, looks ahead into the future, sees what that person most needs for what lies ahead, and gives them really useful things, expensive and precious tools, weapons and provisions, to help them negotiate a difficult quest and survive the battles that lie ahead.
SPOTLIGHT ON...
We all love our children, but they have a difficult road to travel, one that we may not always be there to help them with. We have more worldly experience than they. So we need to equip them with the gifts and resources to meet the challenges that lie ahead. They might not understand why we give them these things. They might prefer things that immediately gratify. But they will thank us later for the really useful gifts. As a Christian, I want my kids to have the best spiritual weapon of all, the good news of Jesus Christ, found in the bible. Jesus Christ is God who became man, to bring us to God. Jesus was born in a Bethlehem stable, but died on a Jerusalem cross, taking the punishment for our many sins. He rose again on the third day, defeating death, hell and the devil. He now reigns as ruler at the right hand of the Father and will return to judge the world and bring in his kingdom. These aren’t fairy stories, but articles of faith, based on eyewitness testimony and Jesus Christ’s own word. How does this news equip my kids? Because they will face a broken world, full of sin, sadness and death, and they are part of that broken world. This is not depressed pessimism but optimistic reality. God has given us the gifts to deal with the future. To equip our kids to deal with the future, we have to be realistic. They will need spiritual weapons to fight a spiritual battle. If you want to understand our world for the sake of our kids, I suggest you read Romans 1:18-3:20 in your bible. If you want to understand the good news of Jesus, the best and most precious gift God could ever give, read Romans 3:21 to 5:21. Every Christmas blessing to you and your family. High Tea Thank You Local Silverdale resident Kerri Colquhoun and daughter Sara would like to thank the many people who supported their High Tea fundraiser allowing them to now undertake their Great Wall of China charity trek in 2014. Almost 90 ladies enjoyed an amazing afternoon at Mulgoa Valley Receptions, dining on delicious food and beverages amid beautiful surroundings. It is a wonderful testament to the character and support of our community that the majority of those that attended reside or have resided in the area or work locally. With little advertising about the event Kerri and Sara managed to rally the support of their families and friends and very quickly filled seats making the day the success that it was. The High Tea was made even more special with the generous support of many individual and business sponsors donating over 70 prizes that were raffled throughout the afternoon, raising over $4000.00 for breast cancer research. The owners of Mulgoa Valley Receptions and their wonderful staff ensured the day ran smoothly, exceeding expectations with the beautiful presentation of the venue and the generous hospitality shown toward their guests. The mother and daughter duo have been constantly touched and humbled by the generous nature of the many people who have supported them on their journey to raise funds for vital breast cancer research and helping them toward their goal of trekking the Great China Wall in 2014.

BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE
Pastor Uel Beggs • Warragamba Baptist Church • Phone: 4774 1476 • www.warragambabaptist.net • Sunday Morning Service at 9.30 am
A Christian chat with Pastor Ron Baker Christmas; just what does it really mean?
There are beautiful events associated with the birth of Jesus of Nazareth and most people know them though some receive them as legends. Please allow me to direct your thoughts towards the history of Christmas as recorded in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke and others of the bible. From the historical facts of the bible we see three wonderful things concerning the reality of Christmas. Firstly we are introduced to the person of Jesus Christ. Secondly we are confronted with the Saviours love, and thirdly we see the wonderful redeemer of mankind. The bible in Philippians, chapter two, tells us of the person of Jesus Christ. This bible passage tells us that Jesus existed in the form of God before he took the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men. His humble earthly birth was not the beginning of his existence as part of the human race. As I think of Christmas I see Jesus as the great selfless one who stands above all history. Yes the one willing to leave heaven and go through hell for people like you and me. When we think of Jesus as the great redeemer we stand in wonder and awe as we think again of him at Christmas time. When we see this Jesus and when we reflect on his love we must confess that there is a deep reality about redemption itself. No man is capable of explaining just why it took the Son of God in human flesh to destroy the curse of sin. What reality is this? The reality which began to unfold in Bethlehem’s manger. It was this man Jesus, it was this love,
infinite and incomprehensible that was necessary to clear away the curse of sin that corrupts all. As we give and receive gifts at Christmas time how many of us have received this Christ who brings his people the gift of salvation? Surely we should respond to the glorious reality of Gods redemptive love with faith filled hearts. Dear readers my wife and family join me in wishing you all a very blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Ron Baker Pastor, Warragamba Baptist Church

Mulgoa Seniors Update Allan John Mortimore
The Mulgoa Seniors group has reduced in numbers and Penrith Council are no longer running a meeting in the Mulgoa hall. The Seniors can still be picked up in a bus and taken to join with the group in St Clair but most of them find it is too long a day and not the same as being at a local meeting. The group had collected $1290.70 with their fundraising over the years and have donated it to the Fred Hollows Foundation. Some of the Seniors will be meeting on a regular basis at the Edmund Rice centre at Winbourne in Mulgoa. Contact Margaret 0407 230 499 for more details.
21 February 1942 to 1 December 2013 Allan was well known by many people as he walked around Mulgoa in his hi-vis shirt on his daily walks or delivering the Gazettes. Allan had a fall two weeks ago and damaged his neck and back. It seemed as though he would be able to recover and was transferred to the Royal North Shore Hospital spinal unit. However the damage was irreversible and his condition deteriorated rapidly and he passed away peacefully. Everyone loved Mort as he was such a gentle friendly person who enjoyed a good conversation and glass of red wine. He was a valued member of the local Rotary club for several years and could always be relied on to help with the fundraising BBQs. He will be greatly missed by his children and grandchildren, all his friends and the congregation at St Thomas’ church.
World War 1 Centenary From 2014, the world will be commemorating the 100 years since millions of soldiers lived, died, and fought in the First World War. Anzac Day 2015 will be the centenary of that dreadful day when so many Australians were killed. One of them was Patrick Sinclair Anderson from Fernhill in Mulgoa of the 4th battalion AIF. He was 33 years old and mortally wounded on 25th April 1915 at Gallippoli Landing. He was buried at Chatby, Alexandria and has a memorial plaque in St Thomas church. A new WW1 memorial wall with lighting and additional seating is being planned for the Warragamba Cenotaph with a $20,000 grant from the Federal government. The town of Warragamba did not exist in 1914 and the names from the Roll of Honour board in St Thomas church will be used. There will be the opportunity for any residents from the parish area to include a memorial to family members if enough details are available. If you have an interest in this project please contact Margaret 0407 230 499.

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com In the October issue of the Gazette, I gave you some strategies for resolving sibling conflict and rivalry. It was such a big topic that I had to split it into two parts. Here is Part 2 … • Role model for your kids what relationship repair looks like. If you have roused on the kids and you feel like you went too far, lost your cool, got it wrong, or responded from your own stuff rather than being logical and reasonable, you can apologise to your kids for your behaviour. You can talk about what you said or did that was mistaken and what you think you could have done better. This is good modelling. Just never make your kids responsible for YOUR feelings and behaviour (own them), never make your kids responsible for making you feel better, and never ever beg for their forgiveness. • Do the “kid swap” on a regular basis. When your kids have their friends over they are usually at their best behaviour. When you send your kids off to someone else’s house to play, they are usually on their best behaviour. I really like the kid swap, and will have up to 6 boys in my tiny little house on a regular basis. It is wonderful to see how well the children can get along. • As Dr Laura Markham says “love each one the best”. This is different to treating them all the same. As your children get older it becomes too hard to treat them all the same. One will have a birthday party invite and the others will not. That’s life – there is very little equity or sameness. However, be careful that you speak positively about each of your children and give each of them your love, care and attention. A work colleague of mine years ago told me that growing up she thought she was Mum’s “special one”. She was one of eight children. One day at lunch, sitting around the table with her adult siblings, they each said they thought they were the special one, the one that Mum loved the best. I can almost guarantee that Mum did not spend hours with each of her eight children each day. She demonstrated her love and care to each child in the quality of the small interactions throughout the day, each and every day. • Have house rules - not because the kids are going to follow them 100% of the time, but because rules communicate your expectations for their behaviour. State them in a positive way, so that the kids know what to do rather than what not to do. So, instead of saying “no hitting: say “we keep our hands and feet to ourselves”. Have a family meeting once per week, and allow the children to have their own say about what is working for them and what is not. • When children are fighting over the computer, TV, X-box, etc, the logical consequence is to switch it off for five minutes. When they come back to the activity at the end of the five minutes, remind them that if they fight over it again, it will go away for 10 minutes. Increase the time by five minutes each time. Make sure you apply the logical consequence immediately and consistently. Follow through with what you say you will do. Switching it off for short periods gives your kids the chance to get it right. When you’ve got to the stage where you have switched the machine off for a half hour, let the kids know that it has gone away for the day and they can try again tomorrow. • Kids fighting in the car? Pull over and have a five minute Quiet Time. It’s too dangerous to drive whilst the kids are carrying on in the back. • You can use reflective listening to sort out a stoush between siblings by reflecting what they are saying and how they are feeling. Don’t storm in and ask the two most stupid questions that parents ask – “Who started it?” and “What happened?” You’ll never get a straight answer, you will be forced to take sides, and you may get it wrong, setting the scene for further resentment and conflict . Dr Laura Markham demonstrates a great way to resolve children’s disagreements at http://www.ahaparenting.com/parenting-tools/ family-life/siblings_fight That’s it for this month. Insurance ... How much cover is enough? Under insurance is a huge problem in Australia, mainly because many of us tend to overlook the fact that a member of our family could become critically ill, injured or worse, pass away. Essentially, we ignore the risk and figure that it won’t happen to us. Therefore we don’t prepare for the associated financial risk. I don’t need to tell everyone that this is a naive view –serious illness and accidents happen to people everyday and although we all hope it doesn’t happen to us or our loved ones, none of us are immune. Secondly, many of us are not accurately aware of the financial risk if something unforeseen should happen. Most people are aware of and understand life insurance and many have cover, either held in super or directly, but more than half have insufficient cover to maintain the family lifestyle in the event of the insured’s death. To Calculate life insurance we normally look at the clients expenses, debts and income requirements to determine how much is needed for the family, then take into consideration the assets available and use insurance to cover the gap. The expense component, often referred to as clean-up, normally includes funeral costs, legal costs and other expenses that surround the death of an individual. Some also like to include additional funds to cover time off work and the like. This amount is usually relatively small and fairly consistent, ranging from around $5,000 to $25,000. Most clients require both partners’ incomes to service debts; therefore in general, clients will need to have sufficient cover to pay down most or all of their debts. If all debts are paid down the family will be able to keep all assets, most notably the family home, with no debts against them. This is important even in the event of a nonworking spouse. Income requirements are an often forgotten part of the insurance calculations. In many cases, even without debts, the surviving family 6 Weir Road, Warragamba will have insufficient income to meet expenses. When calculating 4774 1249 income requirements it is normal to separate into income required www.warragambapreschool.com.au for children and income for the surviving spouse. We then calculate a per annum figure for each, and determine the length of time the Not For Profit Community Based Preschool income is required. The reason we separate the two is that income for Operating for 60factor years the children usually has a different time to that of the spouse. The income shortfall can be hard to determine, but a good financial planner will be able to guide you through this process. Often income requirements may change; a spouse may require more income initially whilst they are “getting back on their feet” or are taking care of the children and unable to work. As an example they may need $20,000 pa for the first 5 years and $10,000 pa for the following 10 years. Once we have determined the income needs and time periods for children and spouse, we calculate the lump sum required to provide that income. Once the three amounts are combined and we have identified the needs, we then subtract assets to provide Our centre offersthe family’s three available age-specific roomsfor the above expenses. COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All Phone 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 email lindacassell@bigpond.com The myth of the perfect family is a burden many of us take to the grave, and at no time is it put under more stress than at Christmas. Conflicts and ambiguous feelings we’ve put on hold all year, bubble to the surface. Then there’s the eternal tug over who we’ll spend Christmas with. Your parents or your in-laws? Your divorced father or your mother? What if your kids decide to go to your ex-husband and his new wife, proving once and for all that they’ve abandoned you? Or, and this is true for a growing number of people, what if you have no one you really want to spend Christmas with? And finally, there’s the pressure to try to solve it all with Mastercard or Visa, to prove your love with dollars because you just don’t know how else to navigate the emotional rapids of relationships. Here are four emotional survival tips: 1. Ask yourself who you really want to spend Christmas with. Imagine that the Guilt-Free Fairy could wave her wand and no one would feel hurt or angry at your decision. Where would you feel truly accepted and at ease? Where would you laugh and be playful? 2. In terms of Christmas shopping, ask yourself whether you are buying each gift because the process gives you pleasure or out of obligation, and be realistic about your financial situation. 3. Use your time off to enjoy getting back to nature via a visit to the bush or beach 4. Spirituality is a natural antidepressantso attend a church service and see the church at its most joyful! Mulgoa Residents are Great Recyclers!
gift voucher thanks to SITA Australia, Councils organic waste contractor. Food and garden vegetation collected from the green organics bin is recycled into compost. Paper, bottles, cans, jars, and other recyclables from the yellow recycling bin are recycled and turned into new products. When households place the right things in the right bin it helps reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and help keep waste costs low for residents. You can help recycle right by keeping plastic bags out of the green and yellow lidded recycling bins. Council has a team of friendly staff to help answer your recycling enquiries. For help with what goes into what bin, or to discuss your household waste service options, please call 4732 7615.
Council’s ‘Do the Right Bin’ team have been out and about in Mulgoa looking in bins at the kerbside to help residents recycle right. This team of ladies have been talking to many Mulgoa households to help families understand what can and cannot be recycled in the green organics and yellow recycling bins. The team has left its mark on the community with many smiley faced thank you tags left on bins throughout the suburb, thanking residents who recycle right! Households who have been doing a great job of recycling were entered into the monthly prize draw of SITA’s Green Bin Rewards Program. Santa Photos with Your Pets
Fantastic Open Day with Dr Harry! Thank you to everyone who attended the Open Day on Sunday 17th November. The weather was terrible and it rained all day, however we still had many people visit and stand in the queue to meet Dr Harry Cooper. From the comments we are hearing, Dr Harry was worth the wait and the rain!! Our guests had an opportunity to line up to meet Dr Harry Cooper where he gave advice on dogs, cats and other animals whilst having his photo taken and signing autographs. The hospital tours were very popular, and not just because it gave the guests a chance to get dry and stay out of the rain. Eden and Kristie showed many people through the hospital and explained all of the different pieces of equipment that we have. A hospital tour is a great way for you to see what goes on behind our doors. Dr Harry Cooper judged the dog competitions and the winners received a large bag full of goodies kindly donated by Walking With A PawPose, Woof N Whiskers Pet Minding, Fluffy and Knuckles, Dog Tech, Pets Charming, Boehringer, Hills, Bayer, Zoetis, Dermcare and The Rosehip Specialists. Check out our Facebook page for the list of winners. We also hosted an online cat competition, as we all know that cats are more comfortable in their own home. Check out our Facebook page for the list of winners. A special thank you to Denise and Lorraine for handmaking and donating 2 quilts, which were raffled on the day. The raffle proceeds were donated to The Guide Dogs NSW. The sausage sizzle was a great success, as they filled our bellies on a rainy day! All proceeds were donated to The Guide Dogs NSW. We also had the world’s biggest model dog, Gulliver, attend our Open Day. Gulliver is a Guide Dog replica, who weighs 690kg, is 4.3 metres tall on his trailer, which is 2.3m wide, and 5m long. Travis, thanks for bringing Gulliver!! A special thank you to all of our staff and volunteers who helped out on the day. We could not have done it without you all! Thank you for working in the carpark, the jumping castles, and the BBQ. Thank you’s go out to: Pete, Chrissy, Bill, Hayley, Brian, Mark, Melissa, Nick, Andrew, Chris, Darren, Alex, Bob and Camille’s family. Thank goodness for family and friends!! Thank you to all of the tent holders who braved the wet weather and put on a smiling face: The Penrith Anglican College , Woof N Whiskers Pet Minding, David Darcy, Dog Tech, Fluffy and Knuckles, Pets Charming, Walking With a Pawpose, and Orchard Hills Rural Fire Brigade. If you have any suggestions for future events or what we can do to make an Open Day more enjoyable, please let us know. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
