More than 15,000 tough and not-sotough mudders climbed walls, slopped through mud and dodged live wires plus plenty of other energy-sapping obstacles at the Tough Mudder endurance event held at Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa last month. The 21km obstacle course attracted over 10,000 participants on Saturday and around 5000 on the Sunday as well as up to 20,000 spectators over the two days. Brenda Tripp, of Fernhill Estate, reported that “everything went amazingly smooth and the concerns of traffic gridlock were avoided by delays in start times and a well thought out traffic management plan” Brenda looks forward to seeing many more Tough Mudders competing when the event is held at Fernhill Estate again this October. Brenda is very passionate about the next Tough Mudder event promoting and adopting a greater involvement from local businesses in and around Mulgoa.

From the Editor Here we are, in May, celebrating our Mums, Grandma’s and Nan’s both past and present. Mother’s day is a time that we celebrate and reflect on the time we have or the time we had with these wonderfully special people we call MUM. While it is getting noticeably cooler, if you’re anything like me, I am really enjoying the spectacular display of Autumn trees that are currently lining our roads. We are very fortunate to have such an idyllic and natural setting surround us. This month we have loads to report on including the after-wrap of Mulgoa’s Tough Mudder, to our very own local Author on page 11, of course, add to this our regular columns and some divine recipes to try your hand at. There’s something for everyone this month! Before we know it, it will be time to focus our thoughts and energies on the end of financial year - who can believe it’s nearly June?! Be cheerful, it’s contagious. Happy reading!

World Class Equestrian Centre at Fernhill Estate

Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa is proud to announce the opening of a purpose built World Class Equestrian Centre. New owners Brenda and Simon Tripp now offer the best in show jumping coaching, boarding and agistment. The Centre boasts facilities which include a show jumping arena, spectacular stables, yards, 2km track, trail rides, day paddocks, two training areas, boarding services and Greg and Thomas McDermott as trainers. The Equestrian Centre will cater for beginner’s right through to the experienced. It’s a great opportunity for locals to experience a Centre of this level that has never been available to them in the past. The Fernhill team also encourage riders of all ages to bring their own horses in for lessons. The Fernhill team is headed up by Jenny and Greg McDermott. The team is rich in talent with some of Australia’s leading showjumpers including Tom McDermott and the Tripp girls, Samantha and Jessica. Tom was awarded the HSBC FEI (Federation Equestrian International) Rising Star Best Young Equestrian Award in Turkey in November, 2012. He was the youngest person in the world to win a World Cup Qualifier as an 18 year old. Some of Tom’s achievements also include representing Australia at Nations Cup in New Zealand last month and winning Silver at the Youth Olympics in 2010. Both Tripp girls have also represented Australia show jumping overseas. Jessica recently achieved 4th place in Mexico at the Junior World Cup, becoming only the 2nd Australian youth ever to qualify for this prestigious event. She is the current Junior Show Jumping Girl Rider Champion for the Sydney Royal Easter Show 2013 and hopes to attend and make a place at the Youth Olympics in China in 2014. Leading trainer Greg McDermott represented Australia at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games in Showjumping and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. The Centre hopes to host a number of elite events in the future, including the Horse of the Year in 2014. Complementing the Equestrian Centre, Fernhill Estate is the ultimate events destination, playing host to weddings, functions, celebrations and special occasions, location filming and photo shoots. Fernhill Estate also played host to the Tough Mudder event last month and will repeat it again in October this year. Fernhill Estate Equestrian Centre is located on Mulgoa Road in Mulgoa Valley. Hope At the End of Life My wife enjoyed a wonderful hospital visit with a 90 year old friend today. Our friend had surgery to insert electrodes to negate lingering pain from shingles. We are grateful that there is no question of her ending her life before God intends. She would be the first to tell you that she is ready to go as soon as God calls her. She is eager to see Jesus face to face and be free of pain. But God will call us home at the right time. In the meantime, God has a purpose for our lives. The NSW Greens are currently seeking to introduce legislation into the NSW parliament that legalizes Euthanasia. That is, the bill, if passed, makes it legal for doctors in certain circumstances to kill their patients with terminal illnesses by lethal injections. Christians are opposed to such legislation primarily because human life is a precious gift from God. Humans are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27), and are different to animals (Genesis 2:18-25). The Ten Commandments tell us ‘Do not murder’ (Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17). Furthermore, holding human life in high regard leads to many good developments such as continually improving palliative care, attentive doctors, resources for aged care, and pain-killing medications. Degrading human life, even for those who ask, changes the ‘economic equation’ and places a subtle pressure on health care professionals. Would this patient be better off dead? Would our hospital meet budget if we stop operations for 90 year olds? ‘Voluntary’ euthanasia has led to ‘involuntary’ euthanasia where it has been permitted. In 1998, 1200 people in the Netherlands were given lethal injections without their

knowledge, and in Belgium, 1796 people were killed by euthanasia without consent. (http://acl.asn.au/pdf/Dr_Megan_ Best_Euthanasia_Synod_2010.pdf). Euthanasia is the final attempt by self-willed humans to control death. The better way to respond to our coming death, is not by euthanasing ourselves or others. Rather, we need to accept death as God’s judgment on our sin (Romans 6:23) and then trust Jesus Christ who died and rose again for us, and said ‘you are worth more than many sparrows’ and ‘I am the resurrection and the life ’ (John 11:25-26). Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is an opportunity for friends, family or workmates to come together, share a cuppa and some delicious food, whilst helping those affected by cancer. Thousands of people from all over the country will host morning tea events - in their homes, in their community, or at work. Small and large, formal and informal, these events rely on the passion, generosity and goodwill of both hosts and guests. Every year Artie and Jean Willmington raise funds for the Cancer Council by selling plants at Dave’s Fruit stall on The Northern Road in Luddenham, and by hosting the annual Biggest Morning Tea at the Luddenham Progress Hall. Last year alone they raised $31,000 and every year the amount they raise increases. This year’s Biggest Morning Tea will be held at the Progress Hall, Luddenham on Thursday May the 23rd.

BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE Pastor Uel • Warragamba Baptist Church Phone: 4774 1476 • Web: www.warragambabaptist.net Sunday Morning Service at 9.30am

Nothing Missed

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the lord. One of the most exciting ideas I have come across in my journey through the Christian life is the thought that in every believer’s life a divine story is being written. Through all the countless occurrences of our lives a guiding hand is at work, taking the raw material of life and making from it a story-line that even though it may be hidden from us at the moment, will, when viewed from the vantage point of eternity, astonish us. I want to bring home to you the realisation that if you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and accepted him as your Saviour then your life is not a series of haphazard events, but a narrative. God has the ability to take everything that happens to us and make out of it a story – a story that has coherence and purpose and that fits into the bigger story HE is telling. Everything in our personal story has a beginning, middle and an ending. Nothing need be irrelevant. The events in my own life over the past few months have manifested that I have a brain tumour, and that I need to have shoulder re-construction. I accept, that I find strength and comfort that my Heavenly Fatherly knows all about our ups and downs of life, The trials and difficulties that life brings, enables us to get our priorities in life right; To get our relationship right with God. Heartland comes to Mulgoa Rise Heartland is the latest book from local author Cathryn Hein. It is based on a fictional property in rural Victoria called Glenmore which is an amazing coincidence as the name was chosen before Cathryn moved to Mulgoa Rise, near Glenmore Park! Cathryn Hein has recently moved into our local community and has just had her third novel published by Penguin Australia. Heartland follows the success of her earlier novels, Promises and Heart of the Valley. Cathryn grew up in South Australia with three generations of jockeys in the family and loved her horses. She also loved reading but so many of her favourite books were based in America or Europe and she wanted to read about Australian rural life. Cathryn started writing stories at school and her short fiction has been recognised in numerous contests and published in Woman’s Day. Her partner’s posting to France enabled her to complete her first book, Promises. Cathryn says ‘I write Australian romantic fiction featuring sexy rural men who fall hard for strong-minded women. But like life on the land, love isn’t always easy. My heroes and heroines have to jump a few obstacles before they reach their happily ever afters, so it’s just as well there’s always a horse or two on hand.’ Heartland is set in rural Victoria and when Callie Reynolds arrives at Glenmore, the property she’s recently inherited, the last thing she wants is to be saddled with a warty horse, an injured neighbour and a mad goose. Haunted by her sister’s death and her fractured family, all she wants is freedom. But Callie hasn’t counted on falling for Matt Hawkins, an ex-soldier determined to fulfil his own dream of land and family. Nor could she predict the way the land, animals and people of Glenmore will capture her heart. Callie is faced with impossible choices. But she must find the courage to decide where her future lies, even if it costs her everything she holds dear. Cathryn’s first two novels, Promises and Heart of the Valley were finalists in the 2011 and 2012 Australian Romance Readers Awards. You can find out more about Cathryn and where to find her books at www.cathrynhein.com or www.penguin.com.au Story: M.Stepniewski

COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All Phone 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 email lindacassell@bigpond.com I often think that my life would be much more enjoyable if some of the people around me weren’t so annoying, needy, hardwork or... (You can fill in the blank with your own words) When I am angry at someone I live or work with, I spend a lot of energy feeling sorry for myself and complaining to all and sundry about how hard done -by I am. I then spend the night fuming and fantasizing and plotting my revenge on them. I basically wish they would change and be different to who they are. Numerous times after a relationship breakdown, someone will say,’ Why on Earth did you marry them?’ and a common response is, ‘ I thought I could change them’. Often we can make our partner our little project. The irony is that we fall in love with people because they are who they are and then we set about changing them little bit by little bit. However, experience suggests the only person I can change is myself. So the invitation then becomes how can I manage my reaction to this annoying person? One thing I find which mellows my response to the other is for me to remember that just as I have to put up with them, they too have to put up with me and my foibles, moods and brokenness.

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph: 0409 986 121 Email: Narelle@nepeancommunity. org.au Blog: http://oranaplaygroup.wordpress.com As promised, this month I provide an example of how to do “emotion coaching” when your child is angry. Many parents find it difficult to ‘stay with’ their child when he or she is angry. Sometimes the child is being what the adult believes to be illogical or irrational and finds it difficult to be sympathetic or empathic with the child. This morning, I witnessed a child having a huge tantrum at the park. He went from 0 to 100 in seconds. To her credit, his Mum stayed very, very calm. She tried to redirect him with the iPhone, food, activity. She tried to get him to do some deep breathing, but he wasn’t calm enough for that yet. Then when that didn’t work, she warned him that she would smack his hand if he didn’t stop, telling him that he could be as loud as he wants at home, but not in public. Then she told him he would have to go and sit in the car (in the shade, with an adolescent present). He did quieten down after a while sitting in the car, but I heard him crying for Mummy. The Mum did her absolute best with what she knew, but distraction, redirection, smacks, and banishment didn’t sooth that agitated child brain. I wondered whether he might calm down if I were able to do emotion coaching with him. Young children are not overly logical or rational. The part of the brain that controls logic and reasoning doesn’t start firing up until about the age of four (years that is), and continues developing until the age of 25 years. During adolescence, this part of the brain goes into hibernation for a while. So, if you are wondering why your children, big and small, don’t think things through at times, it’s because developmentally they are not ready! That’s why you need to be the bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind person for your children for a very long time. Emotion coaching isn’t something you should do when you are in the red zone. You are not going to be particularly good at it if your emotions are activated. But, if you are feeling calm, give it a go. Scene: (I’ve pinched this example from another parent): Child enjoys pressing the button to close the automatic garage door. However, the child also runs away from Mum once he is out of the car, which is a big concern for Mum. So, Mum says he can only close the garage door if he stays with Mum. On this occasion, the child ran off and Mum pressed the button to close the garage door. Child noticed what Mum had done, and got very angry that he had missed his opportunity to close the door. Parent: “You are so very angry that you couldn’t close the door.” (Noticing the emotion.) “You want me to open the door for you again so you can press the button.” “You are screaming at me to open the door and stamping your feet.” (Reflecting what he was saying and observing what he was doing.) “It’s such a big feeling.” “You are so, so mad. Your face is going red. Your fists are tight.” “Now you are starting to cry. You look so sad.” “Where do you feel the anger in your body? Where do you feel your sadness?” (Locating the emotion in the body.) “I would feel sad too if I didn’t get to do something I wanted to do.” (Empathising.) If your child hits you, then tell him that hitting is not ok. Hold his hands gently so he can’t hit you. Repeat gently “It’s OK to be angry but not to hit. I won’t let you hit me.” Crying is healing. If the child wants a hug, then offer a hug. Hugging releases a calming hormone in the brain called Oxytocin. Breathing is also very good. You can role model stress releasing or calming breaths for your child. You don’t need to explain what you are doing, the mirror neurones in your child’s brain will pick up on what you are doing. When the child has calmed down, the parent can ask the child what he might need to do next time so he can press the button. (Exploring). This is not the time for a lecture. It’s a time to calmly and simply go through the rules about staying with Mum so the child can press the button. On the next trip, I would remind the child about the rules before we reached home, just to give him a chance to get it right. That’s called ‘communicating expectations’ and I’ll write about that next month. 8

Holy Family School Update

from the desk of Principal: Mr Tim Vane-Tempest

On ANZAC Day a group of students from Holy Family represented our school community at the Warragamba ANZAC Day memorial service. The local commemoration of this a national day, recalls and honours the sacrifices made by our service men and women. Like Jesus on Good Friday, they too have given their lives for others; born out of a deep love and commitment to the care and safety of all. Thank you to the parents of the children who attended for your support of this event. It was great to see so many of our students marching with medals of family members. The most significant aspect of the students wearing the medals was that they were able to say who the medals belonged to and some of the story of their family member’s involvement in the different conflicts. Taking a small amount of time out of our usual routine and the possibility of a holiday is a mark of respect for those who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice for all of us. This connection to our collective national history is an important way that we pass on our traditions. Congratulations and thanks to Madeleine & Amelia Vella, Clara Davies, Matthew & Joshua Lewin, Damian Guigovaz, Mercedes & Brock Heiler, Max Blackhurst, Danielle MacKay, Kimberley Fenech, Lily Marmont, Jacqui & Ben Sheil, Annalise & Andrea Surace, Riley Talbot, Ryan & Emily Woodhead, Georgia Calderwood, Mia Hosking and Sarah Vella for representing their families and our school community so well.

Warragamba Cenotaph On Anzac Day this year, the many marchers and spectators saw Warragamba Cenotaph in its completed condition for the first time. Wallacia Mulgoa Valley Rotary has worked since 2002 to erect an appropriate monument to the fallen in Warragamba’s central park area. Each year the Cenotaph has become a more and more popular centre for Anzac Day ceremonies. There are six plaques to recognise the wars and peacemaking activities in which Australia’s servicemen and women have taken part. All the wording and design of the plaques have been formally accepted by the RSL. In the last year the garden has been the focus - with a new planting of Nandina and Rosemary, a sandstone garden edge and a sandstone bench for contemplation. The latest work was done by Stonehill Stonemasons who did the garden edging for Anzac Day with very little notice, and donated the beautiful bench, which now stands in the centre part of the Cenotaph. Wallacia Mulgoa Valley Rotary wishes to thank all those who have contributed to the completion of the Cenotaph, either through donations or labour, in particular Wallacia Golf Club Social Club and Rotary International. The Rise of Mulgoa Rise

Almost 100 home sites have now sold in Mulgoa Rise, a new residential estate in Western Sydney, with strong enquiry and demand from homebuyers looking for a quality block on which to build their dream home. Local fireman Ben May, his wife Brenda and four children recently moved from their home in Glenmore Park to Mulgoa Rise, after watching with interest as this exciting new residential development took shape. Ben said they really liked what they saw. “All the homes being built are quality, prestige homes and the estate is full of young families like us.” The Mays’ prestige, single storey home sits on the crest of a hill in the estate, with views to the Blue Mountains. According to Brenda, Mulgoa Rise estate ticked every box. “We love the rolling landscape and rural setting,” Brenda said. “There are footpaths throughout the estate which link to a proposed park and oval within walking distance, and a lot of great bushwalking tracks close by. There are also plans to build a park close by which will be wonderful for the children.” Nestled at the foothills of the Blue Mountains and mostly bordered by national park, reserves and bushland, Mulgoa Rise will provide the perfect environment in which to raise a family,

offering all the benefits of a contemporary country village lifestyle with town convenience. Mulgoa Rise is also close to lakes and rivers, sporting fields and parks, golf courses and walking trails, which is expected to appeal to young, growing families as well as couples keen to buy into a family-friendly community that offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy a healthy, outdoor lifestyle. “We also love the easy access from Mulgoa Rise onto Bradley Street, giving us direct access to Northern Road and then, within two minutes, to the M4,” Ben said. Mulgoa Rise is also just minutes away from Glenmore Park shopping centre, and a 10 minute drive to Westfield Penrith Plaza shopping centre with its abundance of restaurants, cafes, shopping and entertainment. Mulgoa Rise is being developed by FKP Property Group and Mulpha Australia, developers of the international awardwinning Norwest Business Park; the highly acclaimed Bella Vista Waters residential estate; Saltwater Coast on Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne; Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast; The Rochedale Estates in Brisbane; and Peregian Springs on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
