Re-Birth of a Local Legend

After nine months closure and extensive renovations, Glenmore Garden Plus (formally Glenmore Nursery) has reopened just in time for Spring. The reopening brought lots of celebrations to the nursery. This included gardening experts conducting informal presentations on topics ranging from ‘home fruit and vegetable growing’ through to ‘caring for indoor plants’. Local plant societies such as The Camellia Society and The Bonsai Society showcased their plants, specialist knowledge and happily answered any questions customers had. Kids enjoyed free activities including a jumping castle and face painting. To top it off, a sausage sizzle was also on hand. The garden centre has been on site for over 39 years and has been completely rebuilt from the ground up. It now features not only garden and lifestyle products, but also everything you need from landscape supplies through to a coffee shop within the garden centre. “It has been a lot of hard work, but I am sure everyone will notice the difference the moment they walk in the door” owner Tony Saaib said. “We Manager, Christine Ward is delighted to be a part of the excitement cannot wait to also help the customers ‘get the look ‘ at their place”, he also said. “We hope to become the ‘horticultural hub’ for the Penrith region and welcome any gardening society or club to enquire about using our venue to meet” said Tony. Glenmore Garden Plus is located at 753 Mulgoa Rd, Mulgoa. call them on 4773 8002 or LIKE them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/glenmoregardenplus

Safety First! Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP today announced that the State Government will take action to improve safety for students who use the bus stop at the intersection of Mulgoa and Fairlight Roads. Mrs Davies met with parents who expressed concern that children were standing close to the roadway and oncoming vehicles and trucks. Mrs Davies also met with Penrith City Council officers to identify solutions. "I have been advised that RMS will install kerb and guttering on this section of Mulgoa Road. "Currently, school children have to wait on the side of the road, which has a rough and badly defined edge. When the curb and guttering is installed, additional safety measures can be investigated. "I have made representations to the Minister for Roads and have had conversations with the regional manager of the RMS. I am happy to confirm that kerb and guttering will be installed when the road is resurfaced" Mrs Davies said. The kerb and guttering will be installed and the pavement resurfaced as part of the 2012-13 maintenance program, work is expected to be complete in the first half of 2013.

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE

Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161

Thank God for Our Governments We don’t have to have a war to get a new government. Good Country, Australia! Our former Prime Ministers don’t get killed in a revolution or end up in the War Crimes Tribunal. They can retire from public life, and don’t need to hang onto power to remain alive. Thank God. Constitutional Monarchy means that the whim of the King (or Queen, if you have one) is not law. The King is under the law. This is a biblical concept. Israel in the Old Testament had a Constitutional Monarchy. The King had to obey God’s law known to all, and was not a law unto himself. The separation of powers is a Christian concept. Because of human sin, absolute power corrupts absolutely. So the judges need to be separate from the legislators. in America, there is an even greater separation of powers between the executive and the legislative arms of government. Rule of Law is a Christian concept. From prince to pauper, all equally must submit to law. Liberal Democracy means that every three or four years or so we get to peacefully kick out a government we don’t like anymore. All this is much more humane than the ‘Arab Spring’. It’s a small price to pay to vote, isn’t it? Thank God for our police and judges. They are there to preserve peace and order, punish the wrong doer, and vindicate the innocent. Pray that they make the right decisions. Thank God for our emergency services, firefighters, ambulance officers, and SES. They save lives and property. Thank God for our schools and universities and teachers. They care for our kids and teach us about God’s world. Thank God for our hospitals, doctors and nurses. If you’re going to get sick, Australia is a good place! We have

medicare and health insurance. Thank God for our roads, public transport and infrastructure, most of it developed and paid for by previous generations. We complain of course, and things could be better. But they could be much worse. We could be in a war zone. We could be in a crowded Asian city. We could be in under-developed Africa. There are three ways we need to relate to government. First, because of separation of powers, all of us are under government. So the bible says to us ‘Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.’ (Romans 13:1 NIV). We are to submit to government for our good. This includes paying taxes and rates, because is chosen by us but ultimately by God to give their full time to governing (Romans 13:6-7). Second, because we have the privilege of voting, we have to be wise as electors of government. We need to, as best we can tell, elect community-minded, unselfish, disinterested persons of integrity and moral fibre to government. Daniel is the model for such people. When political opponents attempted to gather a ‘dirt file’ on Daniel, ‘they could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.’ (Daniel 6:4 NIV). Third, those of us who offer themselves for government must not do it for monetary gain, their own ego needs or a power trip, but to serve others. In this, they need to copy Jesus Christ, whose example says, ‘ Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.’ (Philippians 2:3-4 NIV)

“Wheel” Show of Support

NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) volunteer firefighters have joined with NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Parks and Wildlife and Forests NSW to complete controlled burns in the recent weeks. “This is important work ahead of bush fire season which will help protect people and where they live,” Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said. People living near a controlled burn, especially those with health issues, should take precautions such as closing doors and windows. In some areas, roads may be closed or smoke affected and motorists should slow down if driving in smoky conditions. Commissioner Fitzsimmons said it was important that this work be completed now, ahead of the coming bush fire season which officially starts in a month. “The outlook for much of NSW is for an increased level of fire activity compared to previous years and just as we’re preparing, it’s important the community prepares too,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said. The statutory bush fire danger period starts on 1 October however some areas, such as local government areas in the north of NSW, have already started their danger period. During these controlled burns, there may be lots of smoke in the air, but remember if you see an unattended fire to call 000. A list of planned hazard reductions are available on the NSW RFS website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au. “I urge everyone to visit the NSW RFS website, download a Bush Fire Survival Plan and prepare themselves, their families and their homes for the upcoming bush fire season,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said. Traffic information is available at www.livetraffic.com

As the Chinese say, the liver is the General of the body – it directs so many of our processes, and sad to say, Western society, diet, alcohol, lifestyle and stress, really wreak havoc on our poor old livers. If our liver is sluggish, compromised, congested, then our bodies will have difficulty with the 3D’s: Digestion, Defaecation, Detoxification. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the liver is considered the seat of emotional stress and anger – an unhappy liver makes our muscles very tight, our eyes red, dry and gritty with with dull sclera (whites of our eyes), it also causes us to have weak nails and interupts our ability to have compassion and feel emotions. So, what can be done to improve the health of our liver? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Cut down on alcohol Have liver herbs and nutrients Have a Caffeine Break Think Green Get Some Z’s Avoid Medications When Possible Go Organic Water !Water! Water!

There’s no time like the present to start getting healthy and staying healthy – even throughout party season. You can make an appointment to see Michelle Beech (Naturopath) by phoning 4739 9947 or 0414 944 112.

Spring into Juice and Water Fasting Simply put, fasting is a rest from food that just about anybody can benefit from. The human body has an incredible healing capacity and fasting—going without food—can eliminate poisons or toxins and balance our body’s chemistry, improving overall health through the process of cleansing. Toxins can be caused by bad nutritional habits, environmental pollutants, stress and general strains of life, meaning that even those who live a relatively healthy lifestyle still have toxins. When the body is not exhausted by physical activity, continually drained by digesting food, or overstressed by emotional concerns, it has the opportunity to provide internal organs with a much-needed rest and rejuvenation. Under proper supervision fasting can help to restore and normalise glandular, metabolic and nervous-system functions, accelerating new cell and tissue generation and enhancing cell-oxygenation. At Hopewood Health Retreat, we guide our patients through two types of fasting—water fasting and juice therapy.

Water fasting

This is often the most effective way to increase elimination of waste and enhance the healing process of the body. Water fasting eliminates all food and drinks, except for water, for a specified amount of time. This process spares essential tissue (vital organs) while utilising non-essential tissue (primarily fatty tissue but also adhesions and swellings) for fuel.

Juice Diet

Fresh juice is referred to as ‘live’ food because it still contains active enzymes, this is indicative of how fresh and nutri-

tious it is. They are packed full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and require minimal energy to digest, with maximum absorption and assimilation. Some people may prefer a juice diet to water fasting as it comes with fewer of the uncomfortable effects often associated with a full fast, e.g., weakness, dizziness and headaches. Juice fasting provides similar benefits as those of a full fast but to a lesser degree.

Length of a fast

Because there are many circumstances that determine how long a fast can continue, the length is decided upon on an individual basis. Generally, an acute disease such as a cold requires only a short fast, whereas chronic diseases such as arthritis may require a longer fast. It’s very important to consult with a naturopath before starting your fast.

Conditions That Can Be Improved by Fasting

Fasting can be beneficial to many common health problems, including arthritis, chronic back pain, fatigue, headaches, improved immunity, eczema, chest congestion, allergies, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal problems, polyps, ovarian cysts, and liver and kidney functions. In addition it can also help with the elimination of chemicals in our body, mental clarity, kick starting a new lifestyle change, and as an opportunity to give up smoking

Weight Loss and Fasting

Fasting is not a solution for obesity. The fat you lose during a fast can easily be replenished if you do not resume a good diet and regular physical activity. Repeated fasts or repeated crash diets are not advised because they may have the lasting effect of slowing your metabolism. In this regard it is better have a longer fast less often then frequent short fasts. Continued pg11.

Breaking a Fast

Juices are the best way of breaking a fast. Then, you can gradually reintroduce fruits, then raw vegetables. Next, you can add cooked vegetables and finally more substantial foods. Rest is very important, both when you are fasting and when you are breaking your fast. When discontinuing the fast, physical activity should be gradually resumed. Care must be taken at this stage so that the full benefits of a fast can be realized. Be sure you consult with your naturopath to ensure that you are taking the right steps when fasting. Hopewood Health Retreat in Wallacia offers Naturopathic consultations for only $90. We can help to identify health issues, provide ongoing guidance, care and support and prescribe individual nutritional programs. Book today on (02) 4773 8401. PARENT’S CORNER Mini Olympics While the world was watching the London Olympics, children at Warragamba Preschool Inc. were creating their own Olympic memories. During the week of August 6 – 10th children joined in the Warragamba Preschool Mini Olympic week, with an opening ceremony, flag bearers, Olympic torches, then it was time for the games to begin. Educators had planned a Decathlon – a selection of fun filled games and sports. Each child had a passport to stamp off when their events were completed, and proudly showed their parents at the end of the day. Some commentary from the mini Olympics included Cooper M. “I loved running” Olivia: “bouncing on the pony hoppers was fun” Liana: “I liked Teddy Toss, I did one and it flew into the box” Elissa “I liked the sack race, I was in it with Heidi’s mum” Adam: “ I liked running and beach volley ball” Ben Sh: “I had 3 things that were my favourite: beach volley ball, running and jumping on the horses” To celebrate the closing of the mini Olympics, children and families were invited to join in the fun of a multi cultural disco. Children and educators kicked off the evening with singing Advance Australia Fair and Wombat Wobble, memories of the week were relived through a wonderful slide show. Children were presented with their gold medals – A wonderful medal tally they can all be proud of! If you would like to enrol your child at Warragamba Preschool please contact Sue or Kathleen on 4774 1249 to arrange a time to visit.

School students looking for something new to do these holidays will be excited to learn about the brand new KJ’s Performing Arts Day Camp, run by staff from local music school, Kalinda Jade Studios. Students aged five to 18 can participate in the camp which will run on each Wednesday of the next school holidays. Each day runs from 9.30am-3.30pm with music, dance and drama activities designed to keep kids of all ages, abilities and experience entertained. The camp is based at the South Penrith Neighbourhood Centre. Primary school aged students (aged five to 12) will participate in workshops on drumming, singing, dancing and music including games and performing. Older students (aged 13 and up) will participate in the school holiday KJ Rock program in which they’ll form bands and learn how to play music as a group. According to owner and teacher, Kalinda McDonald, it doesn’t matter how much experience students have with the performing arts. “We welcome students with absolutely no experience in music, dancing or drama as well as those with years of tuition under their belts,” Kalinda said. “It’s all about having fun and getting into the spirit of performing. “It’s a totally non-competitive environment so students can let loose, express themselves, meet new friends and learn new skills.” Parents will find the camp to be an affordable and enjoyable alternative to vacation care, with discounts available for families registering more than one child. Places are limited so early registration is encouraged. Contact Kalinda Jade Studios on 040 134 336, email kalindajade@yahoo. com or find Kalinda Jade Studios on Facebook.

Fun for the whole family.

Wow, what a fantastic response we had to our Open Day on Saturday 18th August 2012. Thank you so much for everyone who attended on the day and braved the windy weather. Dr Katrina Warren, Kelly Gill and the 4 Wonderdogs were fabulous. How nice was it to see the Wonderdogs keen to show off their tricks for us! Did you see Flynn weave through the peoples legs? Did you see Willow take a bow? How about Jordie pushing the young pup Trick around in the toy car? Did you see Jinx add up 2 numbers and bark the answer? Dr Katrina Warren is warm hearted and a genuinely nice person. She gave so much advice on training dogs and talked about her life experiences. We had a special VIP meeting with our top 40 clients in our waiting room with Dr Katrina Warren and the Wonderdogs, where they had a private trick show. The hospital tours were very popular. Jordi showed many people through the hospital and explained all of the different pieces of equipment that we have. We know what we do in our hospital and a hospital tour is a great way for you to see what goes on behind our doors. Dr Katrina Warren judged the competitions and the winners received a large bag full of goodies kindly donated by Pets Charming, Fluffy and Knuckles, Merial, Hills, Bayer, Pfizer, Dermcare, and Value Plus. A special thank you to Keely, Tysha and Isaac who assisted Dr Katrina Warren sell her new book. Check out our website for Open Day photographs ans thank you’s at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook.
