Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

When we went to print last month, we thought that the Public Exhibition for the Aerotropolis Precinct Plans was about to close. However, due to several public meetings and a lot of media coverage, the exhibition period was extended and ended up closing on the 12th of March. Rob and Deb Heffernan organised two public meetings at the Luddenham Showground. They were attended by hundreds of locals as well as many Sydney media, including TV Stations, that lead to the extension as well as one on one appointments with a town planner to discuss the impacts on property owners. One of the meetings was attended by the following Members of Parliament - Greg Warren MP, Jodi McKay MP, Anne Stanley MP, Peter Sidgreaves MP, and Tanya Davies MP. It was good to see so many people supporting our community, so now we will just have to wait for the outcomes. The Western Sydney Planning Partnership have received more than 750 submissions. Governments are proposing to build the M12 Motorway to connect the future Western Sydney International Airport with the M7 Motorway at Cecil Hills and The Northern Road at Luddenham. The M12 Motorway will be a dualcarriageway motorway with two lanes in each direction,

with capacity for future widening to three lanes. Since the display of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in 2019 and the Amendment Report in 2020, the M12 Motorway has progressed to detailed design. The current design reflects changes in response to community feedback received during the respective environmental display periods. Further information can be found at https://caportal.com.au/rms/ m12. Western Sydney Airport has reached the halfway milestone on the earthworks project, moving 13 million cubic metres of earth across the 1780 ha site. There is more to do, as we prepare to build a new generation airport for Sydney. Most of stage one of the Airport is in Luddenham. The Luddenham Easter Festival is back at the Luddenham Showground and is a COVID safe family fun event. Open April 2,3 & 4th from 1pm- 8pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and the 5th from 1pm- 6pm Easter Monday. Some of the best show rides will be available and you can buy $30 worth of tokens for only $25, with entry only $2. More sad news with the passing of Luddenham long-term resident Kel Cuthell. Kel was a Life Member of the Show Society, where he was President for several years. Kel was also highly active with the Luddenham Rural Fire Service and was a Deputy Captain for many years. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kel’s Family. Thank you Kel for all your contributions you made to our community.

NSW Dine & Discover Program to Inject Funds into the Dilly Economy Wollondilly business owners can now register to participate in the NSW Government’s Dine & Discover program, being rolled out across the State to help communities recover from the economic impacts of Covid-19. The scheme aims to encourage people to get out and about to support dining, arts and tourism businesses and inject some much-needed cash into the regions that need it most. Residents over 18 years of age can now access vouchers to the value of $100 by visiting the Service NSW app and collecting a QR code, which can be redeemed at a participating business. The four $25 vouchers can only be used within businesses that have registered with the program and implemented a Covid Safety Plan. Mayor Robert Khan said, “I am pleased to see the Dine & Discover program being launched in the Wollondilly Shire. Our local businesses have been hit hard over the past year with bushfires, flooding, and the impacts of Covid-19”. “This program will encourage both locals and visitors to get out there and ‘Love the Dilly,’ to enjoy a bite to eat or visit one of our amazing attractions”. Dine & Discover NSW vouchers will be divided into two categories: • Two $25 Dine NSW Vouchers for dining in at restaurants, cafes, bars, wineries, pubs, and clubs (from Monday to Thursday) • Two $25 Discover NSW Vouchers to be used for entertainment and recreation, including cultural institutions, live music, and arts venues, to use 7 days a week apart from public holidays To be eligible for the Dine & Discover scheme, business owners need to: • Have an active ABN and be registered for GST. • Operate in NSW in one of the eligible industries listed on the registration webpage • Have a Covid Safety Plan in place and be registered as Covid Safe Once businesses have registered online, they will receive an email with instructions on how to set up the Service NSW Business app to scan and track the vouchers. To register your business, head to: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/dine-and-discover-nsw/dinediscover-nsw-business-registration. r

New City at Aerotropolis to be Named Bradfield The NSW Government plans to call Sydney’s new ‘hi-tech’ city at Bringelly ‘Bradfield’, in honour of the engineer who helped shape Sydney. The city centre will be built on the doorstep of the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. It will grow into Sydney’s third city, to take its place alongside the other great city centres of Sydney and Parramatta. Bradfield was selected after the community was asked to have a say, with a panel settling on the final decision to honour John Bradfield’s enduring city-shaping impact on Sydney, including his major contribution the Sydney Harbour Bridge. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said Bradfield will define Australia’s first 22nd Century City, which will be a key driver of economic growth and deliver up to 200,000 jobs across the Western Parkland City. “Bradfield was a renowned engineer who designed and oversaw the construction of both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney’s original railway network” Ms Berejiklian said. “The name Bradfield is synonymous with delivering gamechanging infrastructure and it sets the right tone for the area we have referred to as the ‘Aerotropolis Core’ until now. “This area will be transformed into a thriving city centre, home to advanced manufacturing, research, science and education and we want Bradfield to be as iconic as the existing major city centres of Sydney and Parramatta. “What are paddocks now will be a thriving, bustling city centre offering the best job opportunities anywhere in Australia”. John Bradfield’s Grandson Jim Bradfield has welcomed the announcement. “It is a great honour that my grandfather’s name continues to

be associated with major infrastructure developments in and around Sydney,” Mr Bradfield said. “We hope his achievements will inspire generations to come and help shape the future of our urban landscape”. The name Bradfield was a popular community suggestion in the ‘Name the Place’ process and will now be put to the Geographical Names Board of NSW. The NSW Government has 18 Foundation Partner commitments, including with Suez, Siemens, Hitachi, Sydney Water and Northrup Grumman, and continues to formalise relationships with a number of other partners, including FedEx, Romar Engineering and Quickstep in the creation of the innovative ecosystem at the Aerotropolis.

Matthew’s Inspirational Walk for Charity

TRADIE ENTERPRISES

PTY LTD

BUILDING SOLUTIONS • • • • • • •

Silverdale resident Matthew Reid is preparing for the Walk for Terry Fox later this year, a walk that will see him start at Glenmore Park and finish in Canberra, all whilst raising much needed funds for charity. Setting out from Glenmore Park High School, the walk will take 10 days to complete, finishing at the High Commission of Canada in Canberra and covering just under 300 kms. Matthew will be raising money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and has set the fundraising goal of $40,000. “I will be taking part in the walk to raise awareness about the amazing legacy and achievements of Terry Fox. I hope to inspire as many kids as possible and to talk to many schools as well. The funds that I raise for the walk will go to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead” said Matthew to the District Gazette. Terry Fox was a young Canadian who, despite having an artificial leg, participated in the Marathon of Hope, a crossCanada run to raise money for cancer research and awareness. Terry would run for 143 days over a distance of 5,373 kms before stopping due to primary cancer spreading into his lungs. Today, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $800 million to support cancer research and the Terry Fox Run now takes place in over 40 countries around the world. The Walk for Terry Fox will see Matthew walk, or ride if he has ankle problems, a distance of 30 kms a day. This will ensure he meets the target of under 300 kms in 10 days. “I will also be inviting students from every school I visit to walk with me and be a part of it” Matthew explained. Matthew has previously participated in charity runs around the country. In 2015, he ran from Melbourne to Sydney and in 2017 he ran from ANZ Stadium to Central Coast Stadium in aid of former boxer Troy Waters. To support Matthew in his quest, visit his fundraising page at https://www.bandagedbear.org.au/fundraisers/ httpswwwfacebookcomevents379120765961877. You Can Now Roll the Dice of Penrith Monopoly After much anticipation, the official PENRITH MONOPOLY game has officially launched. Locals and tourists alike can now play the world’s most popular board game in a way that immortalises their beloved Penrith and its landmarks. Over several months, thousands of people and businesses having had their say, and after much deliberation, the locally themed squares selected that will make the entire game a truly Penrith experience are: • Brown – Nepean River and Sydney International Regatta Centre • Light Blue – Nepean Belle, Aqua Golf and Penrith Whitewater Stadium • Pink – Luddenham Country Markets, Club Paceway and Throw Axe • Orange – Nepean Hospital, Museum of Fire and The Joan Sutherland Centre • Red – High Street, Riley Street and Westfields • Yellow – The Red Cow, O’Donoghues and East Bank Nepean River • Green – Xavier College, Emu Hall and Mr Watkins • Dark Blue – Panthers Leagues Club and Panthers Stadium After such a difficult few years with bushfires and a global pandemic, it is about time we had a good news story that allows people to celebrate the area but also, support the businesses they love. The new MONOPOLY: Penrith Edition is available now at the following partners (RRP $69.95): • Luddenham Country Markets • Throw Axe • Nepean Hospital • Museum of Fire • Westfields • The Red Cow • O’Donoghues • PRD Real Estate • Xavier College • Emu Hall • Mr Watkins • Panthers Leagues Club • Club Paceway Dale Hackett, Monopoly Manager, Winning Moves – manufacturers of the official Penrith version of MONOPOLY under license from Hasbro – said, “I’m thrilled that this edition celebrates such a patriotic area of greater Sydney. The Penrith community has fully embraced bringing this game to life, and now it’s available for the public to purchase and roll the dice!” Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said, “It’s fantastic to see Penrith has its own edition of Monopoly, putting it in company with some of the biggest cities in the world. Penrith has so much to offer and that’s reflected in the assortment of businesses and landmarks in the game. It’s a testament to our city’s strong community pride that so many local businesses have been eager to get involved”. The MONOPOLY game first hit the shelves in 1935 – since then it has been played by more than 1 billion people. Today, it is played in 114 countries and enjoyed in over 47 different languages. r Who’s ready to play? | Images/Article: Winning Moves. MONOPOLY © 1935, 2018 Hasbro. All Rights Reserved.

Say It Out Loud

2021 Warragamba Anzac Day Service

Re: The proposed cemetery in Wallacia I am a member of the Friends of South Brisbane Cemetery. I am a volunteer who happily helps with whatever this beautiful place of solitude and calm requires. Some of our more involved members lead sold out tours, visiting the graves of the rich and powerful, the young and tragic or the strange but true. Every time I visit, I am calmed by the lack of traffic noise from the busy roads outside, as are the solitary runners, dog walkers and other pedestrians enjoying the peace in the shade. Our cemetery is a place of learning about the past and honouring those who have come before us. The Friends have involved Scout troops and families for years and will continue to grow as people realise what a place of sanctuary they have on their doorstep, in comparison to the industry which chokes the roads and lowers the value of the residences. Sandra Watkins

The Warragamba Anzac Committee wish to advise the local community that this year’s Anzac Day Service will take place at Warragamba Memorial Park on Anzac Day, Sunday 25th April, however, the March has been cancelled. “On Behalf of the Warragamba Anzac Committee, we would like to invite you all to our Annual Anzac Service at the Warragamba Memorial Park. Due to the late lifting of COVID restrictions, we will not be doing a March as we needed several months to organise this. We are all looking forward to seeing you there to pay your respects to our fallen men and women” said Hellen Dillon, Warragamba Anzac

Committee member to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. For more information about this and further events, find Warragamba Anzac Committee on Facebook. r

Standing Strong

“Make a change today that your future self will thank you for“

With 2020 now behind us, it was a year of highs and lows for Wallacia podiatry clinic, Repairs Afoot. The local business has set their sights on not only a big year ahead, but success into the future. “Last year, we had more than just the pandemic to deal with. We had two major milestones, which were the 1st Anniversary of our Wallacia clinic and 10 years for Kings Park. We unfortunately weren’t able to celebrate properly as my father (Rafick Aumeer) passed away in March 2020” explained Shaheen AumeerDonovan of Repairs Afoot. “My father was an Executive Director of Nursing before becoming ill 10 years ago with MND and he specialised in turning around aged care facilities that were failing to provide adequate services. He was our biggest supporter and believed in our vision to create podiatry clinics with all the facilities inhouse to treat any kind of podiatric need” Shaheen continued. COVID-19 hit two weeks after Mr Aumeer passed away. Because of the great foundation that they had built with the business, Shaheen, husband Philip and their team didn’t have to change much in terms of infection control. “We really only had to add social distancing and to wear masks more than usual, as our hygiene standards were already high. I was proud of the way we pulled together as a team and stayed open whilst treating patients. We have a lot of high-risk patients, and by maintaining their regular treatments we were able to ensure they stayed out of the hospitals. We adapted well and offered more house calls to patients who felt more comfortable isolating at home” said Shaheen. Repairs Afoot offer the full range of evidence-based holistic podiatry services from general foot care and diabetes management to sports injuries, wound and ulcer care, and helping patients with pain and complex biomechanics. Both their clinics feature in-house orthotics laboratories, and all their podiatrists are trained to fabricate and modify the orthoses themselves. “We love looking after the people in our community. Living and working here, we get to meet a lot of locals and it’s wonderful! “Our staff are important and are like family to us. My husband Philip Aumeer-Donovan and I work really well together too” Shaheen ended. r Philip Aumeer-Donovan [Inset] Shaheen and Philip Aumeer-Donovan. Images Supplied

Got a Fussy Eater?

The very best way to deal with eating difficulties is not to stress about it. Look at the positive. Rather than focusing on what they don’t eat, focus on what they do eat, and expand their range and variety ever so slowly. Look upon it in the spirit of adventure rather than with fear and dread. The mirror neurons in your child’s brain will pick up on your attitude and feelings. If you have anxiety about mealtimes, your child will smell the fear and respond accordingly. If they get a lot of attention for their fussy eating, they will do more of it. Fussy eaters can be extremely determined and persistent (some might say ‘stubborn’). There is a strategy recommended by Dr Thomas Phelan – the back-up meal. You give your child tiny proportions of the family meal. A teaspoon of everything, separated from each other on a small plate. The only stipulation is that they have to try what is on the plate. They can eat what they want to and leave what they want to but they have to give it a bit of a go. If they like some of it they can have more. You give your child lots of descriptive praise for what they try and eat. The child at any time is able to ask for their back-up meal. The criteria for the back-up meal is that it is quick and simple to prepare, and somewhat nutritious. It could be as simple as a peanut butter sandwich or tinned spaghetti on toast. The backup meal is always the same. You pay no attention whatsoever to your child eating their back-up meal. Slowly but surely your child will eat more of the main meal and less of the back-up meal. This can take time – months or years. Just be consistent. You can be more persistent than your child, right? When I tell people the above story, they are concerned about the child “winning”. Is parenting a battle or a race? Are our children our enemies or adversaries? What is the most positive way to approach the situation? It’s better to catch flies with honey than with vinegar. Force, yelling, and manipulation will only work for a short time and the effects on your child are not that great. Never start a war with your child over food – you will not win.

Young Filmmakers PutWarragamba on the Map Silverdale students Jacob Digiorgio and Jack Joukador are taking Wollondilly Shire to the masses and have just completed their first short film together, titled Warragamba Life. The young filmmakers entered the film in the 2021 FlickerUp Film Festival, a national school’s competition for primary and secondary school students or those aged 18 years and under. Warragamba Life follows the life of two boys (Jacob and Jack) who get up to a bit of mischief in their school holidays. In the background, there’s a separate story of how Warragamba Dam goes from record lows to overflowing in a short period of time. Whilst people go about their normal business, the Dam’s capacity changes with the seasons and the weather. “We wanted to have a go at making a film and entering it into a short film festival. We entered it into the 2021 FlickerUp Film Festival. With entries closed in November last year, we filmed Warragamba Life in September. It took 3 days to film and 2 weeks to edit” explained Jacob Digiorgio to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. “Our goal was to make a film where Warragamba was the star of the show. If you watch YouTube, there are a lot of videos and films that people make about themselves. We wanted the whole community to be the stars. Sure, Jack and I are in the film, but the film is not entirely about us. It’s about living an everyday life in our beautiful town of Warragamba” added Jacob. With their first film now under their belt, do the boys have a plan to make another film? “We definitely would like to make another film sometime, but not for a while. Making a short film that goes for roughly 20 minutes sounds really easy, right? Wrong. It’s a lot of hard work and takes dedication to do something like what we did together. Making Warragamba Life gives you a different perspective and insight into everyday filmmaking. Doing this takes time, effort, devotion and dedication to make a proper, full length film” said Jacob. Jacob and Jack’s short film is available now to watch. Search ‘Warragamba Life’ on YouTube. r Feature Article [Cover + Above] Jacob Digiorgio and Jack Joukador. Image: Johann Digiorgio

Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give a medication to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around. Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. r Happy Easter from our four legged friends! | Image: www.pixabay.com

Back to Warragamba Reunion Day a Huge Success

The Twelfth Annual Back to Warragamba Reunion Day was held at Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club on Saturday 6th March, with over 120 past and present ‘Warragambians’ attending the big day. The main highlight of the day was a when a group photo of everyone was taken at the function, as a tribute to the ‘Dam Builders’ and their families. Morning tea proved popular once again with their local ladies and gentlemen baking cakes for everyone. The club’s courtesy bus was busy all morning with tours of the town and Warragamba Dam. A big thanks goes out to everyone who attended and helped make the day a success, which included: • The Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club for hosting the day and to the club’s administration team of Jeanne and Karen for their assistance. • Our official photographer Sabina Ivankovk for taking some great photos on the day. • Club Director Bob Brooks for running the tours. • The bar team and Spillway Bistro for looking after them all day. • Attendees who baked cakes and to Judy Davis for coordinating as she has done every year. • Those that helped with blowing up the balloons, writing the name tags and manning the morning tea station. • Belinda and the team at the Mulgoa Valley Gazette for covering the function details in the newspaper. The Thirteenth Annual Back to Warragamba will be held on the first Saturday in March 2022. They look forward to seeing you all then! r Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club | Image: Facebook HEALTH MATTERS

You have a Slipped Disc – So what is a Disc and what does this mean? ‘Intervertebral discs’ have a hard outer connective-tissue (anulus fibrosus) and a ‘gelatinous’ interior (nucleus pulposus). At top and bottom are endplates, the transition tissues between disc and bone. Discs have several important functions. They act as: 1. Shock absorbers for the vertebral column 2. Ligaments that tie the vertebra above & below the disc together 3. Spacers between vertebra to allow appropriate nerve-exit from the spine. 4. Movement-enablers for vertebrae relative to each other allowing us to bend and twist As we age discs tissues may begin to deteriorate and weaken showing progressive signs of disc disease. This weakening may eventually lead to herniation of one (or more) discs, which we colloquially call a “slipped disc”. Disc herniation often occurs gradually but significant trauma can also lead to disc extrusion or sequestration. Disc-herniation stages are picture. If a herniated disc contacts a nerve, this may result in significant nerve compression (occlusion) and pain in the lower back and down the nerve course. Compression may also lead

to ‘radiculopathy’, i.e. pathological changes in nerve function resulting in one of several ‘neurological deficits’ including: 1. Sensory changes such as tingling, altered sensation or numbness, 2. Motor changes such as muscle weakness or reflex loss. Any/all such symptoms, often referred to as sciatica, may be experienced by patients with a slipped disc. MRIs (involving no radiation exposure) are the best scan for enabling physicians to see the soft spinal tissues unseen with conventional x-ray. Things are however a little more complex than this. A study by Luoma et. Al. (2000) showed that many patients may have both low back pain and sciatica yet have no disc bulges. A further study by Livshits in 2011 showed that degeneration of the discs alone, whether or not a bulge was present, was highly associated with lower back pain and so it may be that the chemicals of inflammation released from degenerating disc tissue become a key factor in generating lower back pain, possibly sciatica. As discussed here previously, cleaning muscles of inflammatory infiltrate while lengthening them is key to tissue healing & remediation of symptoms.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH MULGOA

Article Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga St Thomas’ Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: gpachurch.online | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am Families are hard work. They are hard work because they involve people, and people aren’t perfect. We all know that! In relationships, it is easy for things to be misunderstood. What might be an innocent question in one context can be quite offensive in another. The stress of a wedding can expose cracks in relationships and even leave people in tears. The issues of one generation might not be the concerns of another. We could imagine that things are easier for the Royal Family. Certainly, there isn’t the concern over being able to pay the next electricity bill or car repayment. However, the human side of the Royal Family is very real. They are real people with real relationships, and all have real struggles and hurts. It is easy to imagine that their family should be the perfect family. While we struggle in family life, we want there to be a fantasy world where they don’t. It’s just not true, because all families are hard work. God tells us that we are all sinners who need forgiveness. The forgiveness we can experience with God as we trust him becomes a powerful motivator to forgive others. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there could be healing and forgiveness down the track for the Royal Family? The kind of forgiveness, healing and change that models to the world what family life should be like – not perfect, but always trying our best to make relationships work. Pastor’s Corner

Over these last six weeks, I have been undergoing radiation therapy which is challenging on two fronts, physically and emotionally. During my treatment, I have met several people who have been undergoing the same or are having chemo as they too battle cancer. A number of those people are fearful about what will happen if the treatment doesn’t work, which is understandable. However, for me, I am quite relaxed about the outcome. Of course, I hope the treatment works, and I have trust in the medical staff that diagnose and administer the treatment each weekday, but the source of my peace comes from my faith in God. Now, just because I believe in Jesus Christ, as my Lord and Saviour, doesn’t bring with it any guarantee of success, any more than anyone else. What has been of comfort to me is the support of my wife, my family, and my friends. We all need people in our corner when the situation is outside of our own personal control. The gospel of Luke records a story of a man who was paralysed, four of his friends carry him to meet with Jesus, obviously hoping that he would be healed. When they arrive at the house, it is packed full of people, so they cannot get in. The men instead go up onto the roof, which was often a place where people relaxed in the evening to cool down. These four men dug a hole through the roof, which would have been made of mud, clay, and stone tile. They then lowered the man down in front of Jesus. Jesus tells the man that his sins are forgiven and to take up his mat and go home. A miracle certainly, a great result built on the faith of four men who overcame the challenges, to see their friend healed. Are there people you need to support currently? My prayer is for all who are undergoing challenges in their lives, may you find strength to overcome through faith in the living God Jesus.

As we prepare the April edition for print, parts of our state and our very own communities have been engulfed by severe rainfall and floods, it has been quoted in the media to be a ‘once in a century’ event. I know it comes as no surprise that the community has banded together once again with complete strangers offering accommodation, while others assist with the boarding of pets, supply of clothes, transportation, food and so many other offers of support. It makes me so proud and privileged to be a part of this wonderful community we call home. As we move through April, we hope to put this event behind us. But, like COVID, there will be plenty of work ahead in rebuilding and restoring life ‘after the floods’. Try and catch your breath, take a moment to read about all the latest happenings in Your Community News. It’s very fitting that I end with this, ‘Always help someone, you may be the only one who does’. Happy Easter, enjoy Your Community News.
