FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH MULGOA
Article Submitted by: Rev John Mahoney St Thomas’ Mulgoa P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am
Service and Sacrifice
Both my Grandfathers served in World War Two. My Mum’s Father was on the Kokoda Track. My Father’s Father caught Malaria while serving in Egypt. I’m proud of my Grandfathers’ service. For me, like most Australians, ANZAC Day is an important moment every year. On ANZAC Day we all stop, Australia stops, to honour the men and women of our armed forces who serve us. We remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live free. ANZAC Day is a great unifying moment every year. It’s so unifying we even let the Kiwi’s be a part of it! I’m thankful for my grandfathers and indeed, all those who have and continue to serve Australia in our armed forces. In fact, I quite like that ANZAC Day and Easter are often just a few weeks apart. It seems appropriate to me. Easter is a time when we think about service and sacrifice as well. In Jesus’ own words he came “not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (The Gospel of Mark Chapter 10 Verse 45). Jesus came to serve us all, to show us what God is like and how we can live in a way that leads to the greatest purpose and joy. In relationship with the God who made us through the Saviour he sent. And of course, Jesus also came to die, he willingly went to the cross, was sacrificed, so that he could pay for the sins of the world. That is, Jesus died so we could be forgiven, so he could be the payment for all the wrong things we do and all the good things we fail to do. He came as a sacrifice, to pay the ransom for me and you. ANZAC Day and Easter are times of remembrance and for thanksgiving. Times to recognise that the freedoms we enjoy have been won for us by others, and in the case of Jesus, it is an eternal freedom.
Congrats Kya
13 very quick years have passed and now Kya Gerhard is embarking on the next stage of her life. Her school life began at Kingswood, then Gooloogong, Wallacia and finally Camden for her high school education. Whilst there, Kya did very well in her HSC exams. Now, she is off to work. Kya applied at numerous restaurants for an apprenticeship as a Chef and she was successful at Neil Perry’s ‘Rockpool’ in Sydney. Her day begins at 6:10am and finishes at 8:30pm. Kya hopes to then do pastry cooking. She has almost got her driver’s licence as well. We are all super proud of you Kya and wish you all the luck in the world with your future endeavours. Gundungurra Dreaming GLENMORE PARK | PENRITH
Marie Grima If you have visited the recently opened All Abilities Park at Warragamba, you would have noticed the amazing Aboriginal artwork that greets you when you walk through the front gate. The artwork, titled Gundungurra Dreaming, was designed by local Indigenous resident Kazan Brown. Kazan’s artwork was chosen by Wollondilly Shire Council as part of a competition whilst the park was under construction. “Wollondilly Shire Council ran a contest that was called ‘What Warragamba Means to Me’. There is a lack of displays of culture around the community, despite the rich history of the Gundungurra people and the Aboriginal people that live here. I thought that this would be a good opportunity to draw attention to our history and add it to some infrastructure” Kazan said to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Kazan also explained the meaning behind Gundungurra Dreaming and the flora and fauna shown on the artwork. “This artwork represents a few things. The lizard is Bidjiwong, which is our totem (water dragon), whilst the waratah has some different Dreamtime stories related to it. The others are from the Gurrungatch and Mirrigan story, which is about the creation of our local waterways and cave systems. It is also the largest intact song line on this side of the country. “Gundungurra Dreaming was inspired by my culture and our stories” concluded Kazan.

Sustainable Living Guide - Less Stuff, More Life Adopting a sustainable lifestyle will not only help save the environment but can also help save you money. Wollondilly Shire Council has partnered with the Natural Strategies Group to launch the Sustainable Living Guide. The Guide provides a wealth of tips and actions that can be implemented around the home, at work and within the community to reduce the everyday use of the earth’s resources. Wollondilly Mayor Matthew Deeth said, “Sustainability is all about meeting the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. “Little things you do in your daily life will contribute to the collective change that our community can make”. The Sustainable Living Guide shows that simple actions such as composting your food scraps, water wise gardening, passing on unwanted items to local op shops, purchasing second-hand goods, cultivating energy and water saving habits can make all the difference. Creating a sustainable life and society involves recognising and embracing those qualities that give life meaning as well as being prepared to shed old habits that are unsustainable. Wollondilly Shire Council also offers a range of free courses to help people on their journey. For more information about their courses, go to https://www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au/lifestyle/ environmentand-sustainability/sustainable-wollondilly/

Back to Warragamba Day a Huge Success This year’s Back to Warragamba Reunion Day was held on Saturday 7th March and was a successful event for the local community, with over 130 people attending the 11th Reunion at the Warragamba Worker’s and Sporting Club. “Special thanks to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette for featuring the function prior to the day. It was very much appreciated. We had a lot of helpers on the day, blowing up balloons, setting up tables, organising name tags and morning tea. A big thank you to the ladies and gentlemen who supplied the freshly baked cakes for morning tea” said Terry Frazer, Event Organiser. “Most importantly, a special mention to our club office team for their valued assistance with printing off guest lists, organising SMS messages and name tags. Our bar team did a great job looking after our guests all day and The Spillway Bistro was kept busy with lunches and dinner – thank you to all. Finally, we would like to thank Allan Cullen, the photographer on the day. He did this all day with no charge and printed/supplied photos” Terry explained. It was great to see several guests from interstate and country areas as well, and many of the attendees came along for the first time. A major part of the day was the running of the club bus on continuous tours of Warragamba and the Dam, which was enjoyed by all participants. A big thanks to the driver for the day, which was Director Bob Brooks. After lunch, they released several hundred remembrance balloons in honour of their departed family and friends. Overall, the day was welcomed by all with many old friends reunited and new friends made. The Back to Warragamba Reunion Day will be on again in 2021, on the first Saturday in March at 10:00am at the club. “Thanks for supporting the 11th Reunion. See you all next year” ended Terry. Osteoarthritis (Oa). Is it really a matter of ‘I’ve Lost my Cartilage that’s why I have Pain?’ Patients with OA pain need to understand that ‘joint pain’ is probably not due to the amount of cartilage present or lost. Zhang states we should only study people with actual joint symptoms, because not all people who have OA on X-ray actually have any pain or dysfunction, and not all people with symptoms show radiographic OA. Let’s look at study done by Hannan etal in 2000. They examined 6880 persons aged 25-74 finding: 1. 319 subjects (3.7%) had radiographic grade 2-4 (obvious) knee OA 2. Yet only 47% of these 319 people reported knee pain, 3. 53% of subjects with grade 2-4 knee OA reported no knee pain Further, 1. knee pain was reported by 1004 subjects (14.6%), 2. but only 15% had radiographic grade 2-4 OA changes. 3. That means 85% of people with knee pain had grade 0 or 1 level radiographic changes. Gradings are: 0. no radiographic features of OA are present 1. doubtful ‘joint space narrowing (JSN) and possible osteophytic lipping’ 2. definite osteophytes and possible JSN on anteroposterior
4 April 2020 www.mulgoagazette.com.au
weight-bearing radiograph 3. multiple osteophytes, definite JSN, sclerosis, possible bony deformity 4. large osteophytes, marked JSN, severe sclerosis, definite bony deformity Other things may need to be considered: 1. Pain definitions need to be standardised & disability measures included 2. Some causes of knee pain have nothing to do with OA e.g. ligament injury, tendonitis which explains some of the 85% of knee pain sufferers with nil or little OA. 3. Using more (3 different) X-ray views in persons with knee pain improves identification of OA to 70% of cases 4. Osteophytes better predict pain than cartilage volume 5. The higher the radiographic OA grade, the likelier pain Even so, we need to ask why 30-53% of grade 2-4 knee OA cases report no knee pain? When we understand that cartilage debris activate inflammatory pathways, and that higher rates of cartilage breakdown almost certainly trigger the initial events leading to joint pain and loss of function we can also understand why total cartilage volume likely has little bearing on symptoms. The question we really need to ask is why can’t peoples’ bodies maintain strong cartilage?
Anzac Day Service at Warragamba Cancelled The Warragamba Anzac Committee wish to advise the local community that this year’s Anzac Day Service, that was due to take place at Warragamba Memorial Park on Anzac Day, Saturday 25th April, has been cancelled. In keeping with updates from the NSW Government, RSL NSW made the difficult decision to cancel all public Anzac Day Services across the state. This was in response to the spread of the coronavirus and to protect the health of the general public. “On behalf of the Warragamba Anzac Committee; Robert Marshall, Rod Dillon, Carmen Chetcuti, Lauren Heydon and myself, it is with deep regret that we will have to cancel the Anzac Day Ceremony for 2020. We would like to ask you all to still pay your respects wherever you are, by facing the west at 11:00am and having a minute silence. We are hoping that our Remembrance Day Service in November will not be affected” said Hellen Dillon, Warragamba Anzac Committee member to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. For more information about this and further events, find Warragamba Anzac Committee on Facebook.

Brittanie Shines as a Sapphire Mulgoa’s Brittanie Shipway has landed the role of a lifetime, after being cast as one of the lead characters in the touring production of The Sapphires in Australia. Produced by HIT Productions, Brittanie plays the role of Kay, one of four Aboriginal women who tour as a singing troupe for soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War. The production will see 160 shows playing in city and regional locations right across the country. The tour, which began this year in Charters Towers in Queensland, was postponed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will continue once the restrictions are lifted and the situation is safe for everyone. “This will be the biggest tour that I have ever been a part of! We started rehearsing for The Sapphires in Melbourne in February for two weeks. The tour then started in Queensland and the initial plan was to visit every state and territory in Australia up until December. With the current COVID-19 situation across the country and the world, the cast and crew are taking a break to stay healthy before
we resume again” said Brittanie to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. The Sapphires was originally a play that debuted with the Melbourne Theatre Company in 2004 before being turned into a film in 2012. Brittanie explained that the story is important as it celebrates success for Indigenous women during a troubled time of war in Australia, “It’s an amazing story that has been embraced by the Indigenous community. I feel privileged to be able to share Kay’s story of positivity and hope and she really was having the time of her life in tough situations”. Shipway draws inspiration from her Ma (Grandma) Doreen Shipway, who sadly passed away in 2012. Doreen was from the Gumbaynggirr mob in Urunga, on the Mid North Coast of NSW. “With my Indigenous background, I feel like my character of Kay is very similar to my Ma. There is definitely a connection there. They both lead fun and carefree lives in the 60’s. Ma also inspired me to take up theatre, so this experience is quite personal” reflected Brittanie. “I’ve never been to the NT, WA or Tasmania. I’m looking forward to visiting there when the production continues. I hope that everyone, particularly the youth, will enjoy this story. It may even inspire them to get involved in the arts too” she ended.

PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/
Are You A Yeller? A lot of parents say that they are. You ask the kids to do something. They don’t do it. You get louder. And louder, And louder. Until you are threatening to take their phone, iPad, or a privilege away from them. Is it working for you? We get locked into patterns of behaving and interacting, and frequently they don’t work, so we keep doing them. Negative cycles lead to poor relationships, poor behaviour, conflict, and resentment. And what is the child learning from it? Einstein said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Often, we only need to make a small change to change the outcome. What would happen if you didn’t yell? What else could you do to change the quality of the interaction? Put yourself in your child’s shoes, and ask yourself how you would like to be approached. What would you like your child to learn and how could you role model it? Dare to be different.
School Holidays: Routine and Rest As first term draws to an end, many families have settled into a good routine for home and school. It is often at this time over the school holidays, that we can take a breather and reset after a busy couple of months. How do we manage time for rest and enjoyment without losing the solid routine that we have worked so hard to get right? Balance and moderation are crucial. Children need a break from the expectations of school, particularly those children who struggle to ‘keep it together’ all day at school. Often those children are also the ones who don’t cope well with change so it can be difficult. Keeping some things consistent, like bedtime and mealtimes, can be a fabulous way of maintaining balance. Giving children some autonomy during the day to pick and choose which activities they do at what time; provides some independence they do not normally get at school. If you choose to have a total break from routine and relax eating habits and bedtimes over the holidays, try to make sure that a few days before school goes back that you bring it back to the school routine so that the transition back to term two is smooth. It’s all about balance. At school, most children are fairly active and after school sports and activities usually exemplify that during term time. As some sports and activities don’t run during the holidays, encourage your child to keep active but to also have rest. It is okay to spend a day chilling out watching movies – it’s just not healthy if it is every day for two weeks. Going for a walk or bike ride or playing outside on the trampoline are great ways to get moving. Moderation in all areas will help to keep balance in order to settle back into the term after the short break. r Have fun but keep some routines to ease transition | Image: www. pexels.com. Sandy Golder and Stephanie Wicks, founders and owners of Thrive Tribe and Co. have been announced as the 2019 Mulgoa Local Women of the Year. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, recently joined Sandy Golder and Stephanie Wicks, to award them the Local Women of the Year Award at the Thrive Tribe and Co. Family Picnic Day. Sandy and Stephanie are the founders and owners of Thrive Tribe and Co., an organisation created to increase conversation about the need for support of special needs parents and carers. “Sandy and Stephanie are exceptional leaders in our local community. They are passionate about helping mothers of children with a disability, parents who have neglected their own wellbeing, and have recently developed programs to encourage those women in finding community and coping with stressful situations” Mrs Davies said. “Both Sandy and Stephanie are worthy recipients of the Local Woman of the Year Award, which celebrates outstanding contributions to the community as a businesswoman, role model, volunteer, leader and mentor” Mrs Davies said. Thrive Tribe and Co. is a solution-based community that looks to support parents in creating positive physical, mental and emotional habits, but also encourages them when experiencing hardship in their parenting journey. Thrive Tribe and Co. also houses an online Facebook group that encourages discussion of practical ideas and thoughts around caring for special needs children. Building Designers The costs to engage a building designer depends on the qualification of the designer, experience obtained in years, the difficulty of the proposed design and the brief received from the client. In most cases, the fees for an accredited building designer will be between 2% and 5% of the construction value. A domestic residence of $500,000 could incur a designer’s fee from $10,000 to $25,000. In most cases, a designer’s quote includes costs and the time that it will take him to produce and finalize the required design. Time and expenses for an average 250sq.m constructed residence can usually range between $6,000 and $10,000. This may or may not include the Structural Engineering Details. Most architectural/designer business owners are often a one-man operation and conduct business by designing and drawing full concept architectural type building plans for their customers. Draftsmen Draftsmen are not designers but have drawing certifications from either a technical college or TAFE. Draftsmen are usually employed by either architects or building designers. They draw up architectural design works that have been designed by either the architect or building designer who owns the architectural/building designer’s company. A draftsman will get instructions from these professionals on what and how these architectural designs are to be drawn up.

Like everywhere else in the world, Luddenham enters unchartered territory with the COVID-19 outbreak. We are hoping you all keep safe. The 116th Luddenham Show has come and gone. Unfortunately, crowds were down over the weekend, due to concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus and a few rain showers on Sunday. It was agreed that it was another great Show and plans have already started for the 117th Show on 6th and 7th of March 2021. The 11th of March saw the official start of the Major Earthworks at Western Sydney Airport. The Deputy PM Michael McCormack MP gave the command to begin, along with Melissa McIntosh MP, Stuart Ayres MP and Tanya Davies MP. Also, representatives from Penrith and Liverpool Council as well as some of the family of Nancy-Bird Walton were present. More than 200 earthmoving machines are now rolling onto the site, as the next phase of work begins on one of the largest earthmoving challenges in Australian history. Western Sydney Airport Executive General Manager – Airport Infrastructure Jim Tragotsalos, said major earthworks will see around 25 million cubic metres of earth moved to make way for construction of the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport terminal, runway, roads and rail. “Major earthworks will see us moving up to 1 million cubic metres of earth a month, working across 67 percent of the site, which is the entire footprint of the first stage of the Airport. We’ll have hundreds of workers and more than 200 scrapers, excavators, graders, dump trucks and dozers, including some of the world’s biggest machines, on site getting to work on this mammoth task. We need to flatten what is a very hilly site – the difference between the highest and lowest points is

equivalent to a 12-storey building, so we have our work cut out for us” said Mr Tragotsalos. At least 30 per cent of jobs during the construction phase of Western Sydney International will go to Western Sydney locals, with that figure increasing to 50 per cent when the Airport opens in 2026. You can have your say on the strategic design of the Elizabeth Drive upgrade project. The RMS are continuing to seek key feedback and input from the community and stakeholders as they progress this important upgrade to Elizabeth Drive. They have developed a strategic design and alignment for the proposed upgrade. The strategic design builds on the proposed access strategy that they consulted with the community about last year. Feedback is invited by Thursday 9 April 2020. Luddenham’s first set of traffic lights have been installed on the intersection of the old and new Northern Road, near the Shell Service Station. The proposed walk of the newly built The Northern Road (between Mersey Road and Eaton Road) before it opens to traffic, was going to take place on Saturday 4 April, but has been cancelled because of the COVID-19 outbreak. This section of The Northern Road will be opening very soon. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com.

PAWS A WHILE
Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027
Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.

Many, many local small businesses are facing extinction if the current climate of social distancing results in us not using their services or buying their products. Their survival depends not only on their actions, but the actions of governments, lending institutions and YOU their customer. Many are adapting to the new rules of the retail, hospitality and service industries. By necessity they’re getting creative with how they operate and continue to do so. Banks and governments are doing their bit, and this is where we as customers come in! If you’re in a position to offer support, lets get imaginative. Why not shop for Christmas now? Buy gift vouchers from the local beautician that’s been forced to close their doors, buy online from local stores, order take away or keep your membership current at the local gym, until they return to business as ‘usual’. All these things will help. We’re also doing things differently here at the Gazette. Why not jump online and follow our Facebook pages where we’ll be interacting with the community on how you’re getting through, whether it be home-schooling, celebrating Easter in a tent in your backyard or a birthday celebration via a video hook up. We are all in this together, no-one is exempt. ‘Stay strong and make them wonder how you’re still smiling’.
