Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

Welcome to 2020 and the first Latest in Luddenham of the year. Once again, we will see so much change and more on the planning for what will happen around the Airport, as we see lots of construction already happening and the start of the major Airport Earthworks to kick in this year. On the 19th of January, we lost another long-term Luddenham resident Nancy Willmington who passed away peacefully in her sleep. Nancy married Benny Willmington on the 5th January 1963 and moved into the Post Office residence. Thanks Nancy for the wonderful things you did for our Community over the years - RIP. The future of Luddenham is about to be decided and you get to have your say at one of the Community Information and Feedback Sessions. They will be held on Saturday 1 February, between 10am and 1pm at Workers Hubertus Country Club, 205 Adams Road, Luddenham and on Wednesday 19 February, between 4pm and 7pm at Bringelly Community Centre, 5 Greendale Rd, Bringelly. This is all part of the latest plans for the area around the Airport, including Luddenham. These plans are progressing with the development of three key documents now on exhibition. This marks the next step in the Aerotropolis, with the documents currently on exhibition and open for public comment. This includes: Draft Western Sydney Aerotropolis Plan, Western Sydney Aerotropolis Discussion Paper on the proposed State Environmental Planning Policy and the Draft Western Sydney Aerotropolis Development Control Plan Phase 1. Have you visited the Western Sydney Airport Experience Centre in Eaton Road Luddenham? The Centre will guide visitors through an exhibition space, before opening to a

viewing area, where they will be able to see airport construction underway. The viewing area is also equipped with augmented reality, allowing visitors to view how the terminal and runway will look and where they will be positioned. Currently, the Western Sydney Airport Experience Centre is open Monday to Thursday 10am to 4pm. Preparation for the 116th Luddenham Show are well underway, and it will be held on the 7th and 8th March. Further information can be found on their website luddenhamshow. com.au or the Luddenham Show Facebook page. You can also email secretary@luddenhamshow.com.au if you would like any further information. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com

Local author and Silverdale resident Carmen Hall has just published her first book, titled ‘Reflections from the Water: The Stories of Warragamba, by the People of Warragamba and Silverdale’ chronicling the lives of early residents of the area. “My book, Reflections from the Water, tells the stories of thirty residents who have worked and lived at Warragamba and Silverdale from the 1940’s until the present day. They are mostly second-generation family members who came with their parents. Most of them are still here today and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are also still in the District. Of course, some have moved away over the years” Carmen told the Mulgoa Valley Gazette about her book. Carmen’s book tells of some of the rich, local history we have right here in our community and her inspiration to write the book was to retell and keep these fascinating stories alive. “My inspiration to write the book was to make sure that the original identity of the Warragamba Dam township and Silverdale and the social lives of their residents would not be lost” she said. “It’s also important to have written history, so that people who are new to the area realise what the area was like in the past. It leaves footprints for our future generations” she added. She has previously written a book, ‘Warrigo’s Way’, that has yet to be published. It tells of the story of three families, an Australian soldier in the 2/3 Pioneer Battalion, Ninth Division, A.I.F and a great love that is set during/after World War 2. “Warrigo’s Way is fictional, based on some facts. It’s very much an Australian-themed book. I had it printed for myself and some of my friends but haven’t had it published yet” Carmen stated. Reflections from the Water: The Stories of Warragamba, by the People of Warragamba and Silverdale is available for $25.00, plus $8.50 for postage. A Fresh Start for 2020

Well, its February, and the New Year may have lost its shine a little, but 2020 is in full swing. I hope your year still feels full of possibilities but if it doesn’t, I’d like to suggest one to you. This year, 2020, might be the perfect time to start getting to know Jesus. I don’t mean listening to what others have to say about him, and I don’t mean just thinking about those old stories you might have heard as a child. I mean getting to know about Jesus from Jesus. Read his words for yourself. Read the first biographies written about him in the Bible. The Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, if you haven’t read them as an adult, 2020 may be the perfect time to see Jesus for yourself. It’s not about what the media says about him, it’s not about what I say about him. Instead, it’s about what he said, what he did, who Jesus really was. And it’s about who Jesus is, now. If you haven’t thought about it for yourself in a while, 2020 might be the perfect opportunity. So whatever other possibilities you’re going to enjoy this year, why not make space for one more? Pick up the Bible, read the first biographies of Jesus for yourself, who knows what you might find! I mean, Jesus could be just a 1st century carpenter that somehow got remembered by history or he could be the single most significant figure in all of history and someone that can make a difference to your personal history today. Of course, if you don’t own a Bible, then investigating Jesus for yourself isn’t a possibility is it! In which case, we’d love to help, feel free to visit us at church or give us a call and we can give you a copy. Indeed, if you do start reading and you have questions, we’d also love to talk with you about them, can’t promise we have all the answers but I’m sure we’ll enjoy the conversation!

Wallacia Progress Hall Cools Down For Summer!

Wallacia Progress Hall, owned and managed by the community and the local management group Wallacia Progress Association, could not afford the full cost of a much-needed upgrade of electricals and the installation of air-conditioning to this heritage-listed hall, with the cost being just over $10,000. When Cambridge Park Lions found out about this situation, they rallied the other clubs from Lions Zone 14 and $4,000 was committed towards the project. Cambridge Park then applied and was successful in receiving an Australia Lions Foundation Grant, receiving a dollar for dollar grant. They then gave a generous donation of $8,000 from “Lions” towards the project. Matt Bobrige, owner of Comfort Zone Air Conditioning in Claremont Meadows, was able to complete the project in preparation for the hot summer season. Cambridge Park Lions were one of the first groups to enjoy the new air-conditioning, holding their club’s AGM soon after. President of Cambridge Park Lions, Linda Lamond stated “Without generous donations to Lions from the people of our local community, this project would not have gone ahead. We are also very grateful for the assistance from Lion Steve Holley, District Co-ordinator of Australian Lions Foundation, for all his support to get this project up and running. This is a great outcome for the village of Wallacia, having an air-conditioned hall available for community and private events. We are more than happy to assist President Jane McLuckie and the committee of the Wallacia Progress Association, who work tirelessly to look after and maintain this lovely heritage listed hall and surrounds.” If you are thinking of hosting a family event or party and need a venue, please consider hiring Wallacia Progress Hall. Enquiries can be made to wallaciaprogressassociation@gmail.com. For information on how you can donate or join with Cambridge Park Lions to make a difference in our community and beyond, contact Lion Linda Lamond on 0408 530531 or at cambridgepark@lions.sydney. r Wallacia Progress Hall [Inset] L-R: Linda Lamond (President Lions Club of Cambridge Park), Jane McLuckie (President Wallacia Progress Association) and Steve Holley (District Co-ordinator Australian Lions Foundation) | Images: Jane McLuckie

Ever since I can remember, I have had a love for radio. As a child I used to dream of sitting in a studio and conducting my own program. I would regularly go, as part of the audience, to watch shows being recorded seeing many of the stars of yesterday. Eventually my dream was realised and I was given the opportunity to move to the country to work on the local station. That love has remained, and over the years I have stayed with radio both commercial and our local community station. I have been fascinated since the advent of the internet and the many opportunities offered via that medium. A big part of the internet is music and generally people are turning to the internet for their music entertainment. Whist there are quite a few internet stations operating, these aim their music at the younger audience. I felt that there was a hole to be filled, so Reminiscing Music was put together to fill that void. It offers listeners the music that they grew up with and the music they love. If you love the music from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as much as I do and you enjoy different music styles (Rock, Standards, Country, Jazz etc), try reminiscingmusic.com. Big School Calling for Rio

Do you still remember your first day at school? For many of us, it’s a day we’ll never ever forget. The first step of a journey that will change our lives forever. Thousands of children across the state and country are about to start this same journey. Rio Cook is one of those children, counting down the days until he starts at big school. This year, Rio will join his older brothers Luca (11) and Jonas (6) at Warragamba Public School. After watching on, he finally gets to join them together for the first time as students. Rio loves books and he can’t wait to learn how to read. “Rio attended the Orientation Days at Warragamba Public School with his friends and teachers from Warragamba Preschool. He is quite familiar with the school due to both of his brothers attending there” said Kimberley Cook, Rio’s Mum. Rio also enjoys riding his BMX, scooters, swimming and tinkering with his Pa in the shed. Starting school for the first time can be a nervous time, not just for the children, but also for their parents as well. It’s not uncommon for Mums and Dads to shed a tear once or twice when they wave goodbye. In Kimberley’s case, it can be easier with your third child. “As Rio’s Mum, when he starts school for the first time, I will feel excited for the next chapter of his life and maybe a little sad that my little guy is growing up. I’m much more relaxed the third time around” Kimberley replied. Rio already knows what he wants to do when he finishes school. He loves anything to do tools or the Army. “He could be a tradie or in the Army” added Kimberley. The Cook family appreciate living in the local area and they see Rio and his brothers going to school here as the perfect fit. “The Warragamba and Silverdale area is very family friendly. It’s a small town, where people know your name. I think we are very lucky here in terms of the community facilities and the opportunities we have” ended Kimberley. r Feature Article: Dressed and ready to go | Rio preparing for big school. Who Can Design Your Building Project? Architects are professionals that have university degrees and are members of the Institute of Architects in Australia. These Architects do charge a professional fee, but often most of their work is in major cities where there are high-rise buildings, skyscrapers, large commercial and industrial projects such as shopping malls and high-rise home units. Most of their work is for development projects. Architects can and will charge 6% to 10% plus of the construction costs and will take the project from a green field stage to final hand over to clients. A domestic residence of $500,000 would incur an Architect fee of close to $30,000 to $50,000 to design. In some cases, this does not include Structural Engineering or other professional services required to meet Council DA and CC (Development Application and Construction Certificate). These types of fees are not within reach of most people who want to live in a well-designed home. These architecturally designed homes are often well in the range of 2 to 5 million dollars and more to construct/built (See next issue for a continuation of this topic) John Gersteling MBDAA Accredited Building Designer Ph: 47741931 | M: 0419299806 E: john@building-designs.net r Image: www.pexels.com

New Committee for Mulgoa The Annual General Meeting for the Mulgoa Progress Association took place with a record turnout of members and an almost entirely new committee elected to represent the community. Over two hundred members attended the meeting in December at the Mulgoa Hall on Littlefields Road, following an unprecedented wave of interest in the organisation that saw a record number of new membership applications accepted in the three weeks preceding. Five of the seven members voted into positions, sit on the association’s committee for the first time. The MPA’s primary objectives focus on progress and preservation, working to protect the natural beauty and rich heritage of the valley while ensuring the community is influential in planning and shaping the future of Mulgoa amid inevitable growth in the region. The committee will work to foster a stronger working relationship with local and state government departments, community organisations and local businesses, reflecting the voice of the association’s membership and with the aim of achieving outcomes in the best interests of the community. The Mulgoa Progress Association Committee: President Mr Tim Hawkins, Vice President Ms Sandra Newham, Secretary Mrs Vicki Skoulogenis, Treasurer Ms Cilla Tey, Committee Member Mr Daniel Armstrong, Committee Member Mr Dean Bouzianis and Committee Member Mr Ryan Kelly.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

Have You Given Any Thought To Your Parenting Goals This Year? We set personal goals and work goals. We watch lifestyle shows on the television or scan social media to get ideas about how we want to make changes to our home and garden. We make holiday plans. How often do we take stock of what is happening within our family? What is going well? What could we do better? What are our family’s values and how do we communicate and role model our values to and for our children? With parenting we often fall into autopilot mode. We fall into familiar ways of interacting and behaving. Humans are social and emotional beings. The foundation for our health and wellbeing is connection and belonging. Family can provide the most important and satisfying relationships that we will ever experience, or the most damaging. The difference between establishing and maintaining constructive or destructive relational patterns is intention and reflection. Intention is staying focused on what we want to achieve. Reflection is thinking about what went well and what we could do better next time. This can be such hard work but it can be achieved with small and consistent change. The effort requires kindness – with yourself and others. Kind enough to allow for mistakes and to learn from them. It also requires bravery – being brave enough to try again and keep going. Kindness and bravery go hand in hand. I recently came across the concept of ‘Ubuntu’ which is a Southern African word meaning “I am because we are”. That rings true for our children and for ourselves. In a TEDX talk by Dozie Okeleke (https://youtube/vBUy7XmbB7M) he quotes an African saying “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. And so it goes when we are interacting with our children. For example, if we are nagging or yelling at our child, and the child becomes belligerent, we may get frustrated with the child’s behaviour. Reflecting on this situation – what do we want to achieve and what is the most effective way to manage it that honours the people involved and the family as a whole? What have your child and you learnt from the experience? We are all a work in progress.

Congrats Jaymie

Jaymie Gerhard started his primary school education at Wallacia Public School and moved to The Oaks for Years 5 and 6. He is now off to high school. He is a very talented young man in music and excels in guitar playing. He applied to continue his education at Campbelltown Performing Arts and was accepted for his exceptional talent with the guitar. He has competed in many contests with The Music Bus and has always done very well. He has released a song with The Music Bus Super Band, and it is on YouTube. He quite often places first in his category. Jaymie, along with his brother Jack and another student, have formed a band called ‘Division 18’. He is a mad keen Metallica and Queen fan to the point that he drives his family nuts! He can recite Bohemian Rhapsody in his sleep. Jaymie grew his hair for the World’s Greatest Shave and raised quite a lot of money for the charity. He has been growing it for almost two years now. It will be long enough for a wig this time. I am sure we will see and hear a lot more about Jaymie in the future with his musical talents and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours. Love, Your Family

Restoring Wallacia’s Wildlife Wonderlands at Fowler Reserve You can learn more about our local animals and plants and help protect them by removing threatening invasive weeds. The reserve is 5 hectares and is a unique example of two different vegetation types converging together - a Cumberland Plain Alluvial Woodland and Shale Sandstone Forest. This convergence creates an interesting mixture of trees and shrubs within the Reserve and forms a vital wildlife corridor for a variety of animals to move through the area. The dominating invasive weeds that have been identified include Balloon Vine and Lantana. The event is a collaboration between Penrith City Council and Conservation Volunteers Australia and Western Sydney Airport. Register: Please register for the event at Conservation Volunteers Australia’s Eventbrite at: https://www.eventbrite. com.au/e/restoring-wallacias-wildlife-wonderlands-fowlerreserve-tickets-88429971425. Wear: Long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, a hat and fully enclosed shoes. Please bring a bottle of water along as well. Parking: Parking is available within the reserve. 11th Annual Back to Warragamba Reunion Day All past and present residents, families and friends are cordially invited to join us for this big day. Morning tea will be served on arrival with homemade cakes baked by our local ladies and gentlemen. Name tags will also be issued to all attendees. There will be historical photos and DVD’s on display showing the dam construction, the town, sporting teams, Warragamba Public School (including special items from the early days at the school). You can bring along your memorabilia for display on the day too. The ‘Spillway Bistro’ is open for lunch and dinner. The club’s courtesy bus will be running with tours of the town and the dam, prior to lunch. After lunch, we will release remembrance balloons in memory of our relations and friends who are no longer with us. A special note is that Carmen Hall has just released her historical book ‘Reflections from the Water’, which has stories of Warragamba by the people of Warragamba and Silverdale. Carmen is organising a second print run and will be taking orders at the reunion. This Reunion Day is proudly sponsored and financed by Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club Ltd. Come along and catch up with old friends and make this one the best one yet. For enquiries, please contact Terry Frazer on 0410 784412.

Headaches! Could It Be Your Muscles - Muscling-In On Your Happy Life Headache is the most common cause of neurological consultation for doctors, most being ‘primary headache’, i.e. not the result of another medical condition such as a tumour or aneurism. Correctly diagnosing headache cause is vital, it might be a ‘red-flag’ to a rare underlying condition that may be serious & possibly life-threatening. E.g. headaches with: 1. Sudden onset, severe (thunderclap) headaches could signal a. intracranial haemorrhage, b. vertebral artery dissection, c. cerebral venous thrombosis d. reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome 2. stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, recent onset of confusion, altered consciousness, fever raises concerns of infection. 3. sensory changes, weakness, double vision or visual field defects also need investigation 4. enlarged blind spot suggests papilledema / raised intracranial pressure 5. worse for coughing, straining, sneezing may signal raised intracranial pressure 6. worse for eye movement and/or impaired vision may suggest inflammation of the optic nerve Most people get primary headaches: 1. Tension-type, 2. migraine, 3. cluster headaches.

38% of the population suffer tension headaches, 10% migraines and <1% cluster headaches, and almost all migraine suffers also have tension headaches. A Danish study found risk factors for: 1. migraine were familial disposition, no vocational education, a high work load, frequent tension-type headache. 2. tension-type headache, were poor self-rated health, inability to relax after work, sleeping few hours per night. Many of these risk factors may lead directly to increased stress levels, which can affect muscles. Neurologist Egilius Spierings, states ‘Tension headache is thought to be caused by a lack of sleep, stress, hunger, thirst, eye strain or’ head neck and shoulder muscle strain, ‘usually due to bad posture - think sitting at your desk all day’, while migraine ‘occurs when blood vessels in the head dilate’, but ‘just as with tension headache, stress on the muscles in the neck, jaw and shoulders may also play a role’. Given this you’d be surprised that Spierings says ‘in the headache world, …no attention being paid to muscles’, as headache prevention or treatment generally focused on ‘pharmacological intervention’. Experience shows remedial work to neck & shoulder muscles provides considerable benefit for primary headaches. If you need help call us at the clinic.

Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check by a veterinarian to ensure they are healthy. They have had their first vaccination, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 4 lovely kittens ready for adoption now. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly. Female, ginger short hair, born 9.11.19, approx. 12 weeks of age. Male, black short hair, born 9.11.19, approx. 12 weeks of age. Male, white and tabby short hair, born 5.10.19, approx. 16 weeks of age. Male, tabby and white short hair, born 5.10.19, approx. 16 weeks of age. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious kitten diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au. v Images Supplied

Well, what a tough few months it has been. You don't need me to tell you about the devastation these fires have caused for families and business owners, or the health implications faced by many with existing respiratory or other health concerns. What is worth highlighting is the heroic efforts of all of our wonderful emergency services workers, many of whom worked tirelessly for days, weeks and months to help provide the best outcome for our friends, neighbours and communities. As we face 2020, somewhat with a degree of uncertainty about our future climate and landscape, one thing we know for sure is that our community spirit is 100% alive. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by the strength and support of this amazing community that we each call home. We're glad to be back at the tip of 2020 with another year full of inspiring local stories and accomplishments, supporting local businesses and delivering directly to your door! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Your speed does not matter. Forward is forward!'.
