Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Welcome to 2021 and the first Latest at Luddenham of the year. Well, what a year 2020 was and, of course with COVID-19, so much change in our town. This will be a particularly important year with the finalisation of the planning and zoning in Luddenham. The Luddenham Progress Association has met with Planning Partnership and the following information provided: • The time frame for the Luddenham Village Centre will be left up to residents and developers. There is no talk on forcing anyone out of houses and houses can still be built on blocks in Luddenham. Luddenham Village residents will not be forced out. • Luddenham’s increase in population will come from the area north of the ANEC20 line on the Map (no details were given on how). • The Old Northern Road will have shops on both sides of the street, making it a destination centre and a hub for the Agri Zone. It will be a street scaped area designed to be appealing. Luddenham Progress Association will continue to advocate for residents. I urge you to have your say on the draft precinct plans. They are on exhibition for community and stakeholder feedback until 26 February. All the plans are available online at www.planningportal. nsw.gov.au/WSAPP and this is our last chance to have a say in the Luddenham of the future. On the 11th of December, I had the honour along with Federal Member Angus Taylor MP of cutting the ribbon signalling the completion of The Northern Road from Elizabeth Drive in Luddenham to Narellan. Now the Northern Road bypasses the town, and it’s a lot easier getting in and out of the businesses.
Please support our local businesses. On the 13th of January, the Committee of the Luddenham A.H & I Society Inc. unanimously decided to cancel the 2021 Luddenham Show. They looked at moving this year’s Show to later in the year, but it was decided it would be better to cancel this year completely. With the uncertain future of COVID-19, the changing daily circumstances and the unknown restrictions that may apply in March, the Committee made this tough decision with the health, safety, and wellbeing of the whole community in mind. The Show Society thanked the local community, sponsors, supporters, volunteers, and exhibitors for their support over the years and look forward to working with you all in the future. Now all our efforts into planning the 2022 Show to be held on the 5th and 6th March 2022. Sad news in with the passing of David Knox on the 17th of January in Macquarie Hospital aged 73. David’s Stall is renowned for the Best Fruit and Vegetables around. David was a big part of Luddenham and lived here all his life. He will be sadly missed by so many. We also lost Jean Mills (Wakeling), a former Luddenham resident. Jean passed away on Monday 28th December aged 95 years. Jean was a life member of the Luddenham Show Society and her late husband Cec was the show treasurer for many years. Thank you both David and Jean for what you have done for our town. RIP. r The late Dave Knox | Image Supplied

Local resident Karen Fountaine has created Mulgoa Community Book Exchange, where book enthusiasts can now share books to read with one another. The idea for the Community Book Exchange began in October last year, when Karen chatted to a gentleman at Mulgoa Shopping Centre who was looking to buy a book to read. She recalled telling him that she would often buy used books at the charity store for her elderly father and return them when he finished. This was when she realized that something was needed right here in Mulgoa, mainly for the elderly in our community. “I am an avid reader myself and have so many books at home which I have enjoyed. The idea for the book exchange came about due to the lack of resources’ out here. I remember seeing and picking up a book in New Zealand and thought to myself at the time, what a brilliant idea” Karen explained. Gathering up her beloved books or the ones that she could part with, she made a sign and off she set to ask the owner at The Friendly Grocer at Mulgoa Shopping Centre if he was willing to have the books on the portable cart that was used outside the store. He was happy to help, with the books fitting beautifully on the bottom of the wooden cart, which is wheeled in and out of the shop each day. “Although the sign may say ‘Take a Book, Leave a Book’, it really doesn’t mean you can’t take one. Readers can please feel free to take as many as they like. I know they will return them and perhaps others next time” Karen said. “In the 3 months it has been running, many books have been exchanged and new ones are appearing all the time. Our Mulgoa Community Facebook Page has been wonderful in getting the word out there. We have a lot of great feedback via this way” she added. If the community shows and continues with their love of reading, the Book Exchange will keep going. Karen hopes that by sharing the books, it will also reduce the need to travel to the library to borrow books. “People have also left children’s books, which is great. Hopefully, there will be something there for everyone’s tastes. If not the first time you look, maybe next time you will find something that interests you. Thank you all for keeping our project going” Karen finished. r Mulgoa Community Book Exchange | Image: Karen Fountaine

Silverdale Anglican Church Update I’m thrilled to be writing that the new Silverdale Anglican Church building at 2265 Silverdale Road is almost ready to be opened! Almost. The hope is that at Easter, or shortly after, all the final certifications will be accepted by Wollondilly Council and the Church will be able to host services and open its doors to the community. For many local residents, the Church building has sprung up very quickly. For the members of St Thomas Anglican Church however, it has taken decades to see the plans come to life. While ground was broken on the 26th of May 2020, this building was first planned well over 30 years ago. The original All Saints Anglican Church in Silverdale, and St Paul’s Anglican Church in Warragamba were long understood to be inadequate for future growth. So, in the late 1980s and early 90’s it was decided that a new church building would be necessary. Especially given the (then) new plans for an
airport to be built at Badgerys Creek. Finding the right plot of land, designing, and redesigning the building, as well as a few false starts on the site itself have meant that the building may not have been what was first dreamed of, but it is very much what the members of St Thomas have been hoping for. With all the delays and changes, it has been a test of patience for all involved and we still believe that the new building has happened under God’s direction and in his timing. With the number of new families moving into Silverdale, and the community coping with the ongoing stresses of a global pandemic, it feels like the right time to open a church in the heart of Silverdale. Of course, naming an actual ‘opening day’ will depend on council permissions and any restrictions due to the ongoing pandemic. Our desire is to fling open the doors as soon as we’re able, to offer hope, community, and care to the people of Silverdale and beyond. Hopefully see you at church sometime soon! r

Reflective Listening
If you search on the term “reflective listening” you will get many different ways of being a reflective listener. I find reflective listening a wonderful tool, but when I teach it to parents they say “that’s weird”. I tell them to go home and try it, and let me know how it’s going for them in a week’s time. Many parents come back and say “it really works”. For parents of adolescents they say that reflective listening has changed the relationship between them and their young person. Here is one way that I use reflective listening… Child: Jack didn’t play with me at lunchtime today. Parent: Oh, Jack didn’t play with you at lunchtime. (Same tone, same affect) Child: Nup Parent: Hmmm Child: He played soccer with Caleb instead. Parent: So, he played soccer with Caleb instead. Child: Yeah Parent: Yeah (with a big sigh) Long silence. Child: I think I’ll play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Parent: You’ve decided to play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Sounds like a plan. What do you notice about this interaction? The child solved his own problem. Notice the absence of the parent giving advice. Notice the absence of the parent asking more questions. Notice the presence of silence and space, and this is the magic of it. Our kids are so used to us giving advice and asking lots of questions that they quite often don’t talk about their stuff because they don’t want the fuss or the lecture. When you give kids lots of silence and space, they open up. Why? Because it is now emotionally safe to do so. Sometimes it takes a while for the child to get used to it, and the communications end quickly. Keep using it, they’ll get used to it. Kids are clever. They usually have some idea of how they might go about solving their problems. After a good while of reflective listening, if the child hasn’t generated his own solutions, you might want to ask “I wonder what you might do about it?” and do some more reflective listening. r

Enrolments Now Open With 2021 now upon us, many kids around the community will be packing their bags in anticipation for their first day at big school. 4-year-old Pipa Hooton is amongst one of those who will soon enter the gates and become a Kindergarten student. Pipa will be attending Holy Family Primary School Luddenham this year, joining her older brother Cruz, who is 8 years old. “She is looking forward to catching the bus to and from school with her big brother Cruz” explained Karryn and Liam Hooton, Pipa’s parents. Pipa’s preparation for Kindergarten included attending Teddy Bear Cottage in Warragamba from 2017 to 2020 and Warragamba Preschool in 2020. The active youngster enjoys the great outdoors and her favourite things to do include riding her bike, bushwalking and going to the beach. “We are super excited for Pipa to start school. She is a very confident and smart girl, and we have no doubt that she will excel” Karryn and Liam replied. So, what does Pipa want to be when she grows up and finishes school. “I want to be a Firefighter or a Princess” smiled Pipa. “What we enjoy the most about living in the local area and our children going to school here is the close-knit community feel. All the families and staff at Holy Family Luddenham are so nice and welcoming. The students are known by name by all the teachers” ended Karryn and Liam. Best of luck Pipa and all the children starting and returning to school this year.

Silverdale’s Best Kept Secret Wollondilly’s newest and exciting destination is due to open this month, with Horse and Harpy opening within the grounds of Silverdale Church. Horse and Harpy is a vintage boutique horse float that has been lovingly restored and parked alongside the heritagelisted local church, with incredible views across the valley. They are geared up for coffee and delicious snacks to be served to the local community. There are also plans for a second float to be turned into a mobile bar in the future and catering beautiful grazing platters to the surrounding area. The centre piece of Horse and Harpy will be Silverdale Church. The ‘pretty little weatherboard church’ which was first known as All Saints, was a place of worship in Silverdale between 1906 and 2016. “It all started when we bought a church. It just happened; it was flowing. The dream was a home which soon evolved when an old idea was given a fresh perspective” said Jacob Golding of Horse and Harpy. “We are a mobile food vendor with an incredible base that is in front of the cutest church with a view to die for. Our coffee is second to none and our simple menu has something for everyone. We are sure to become a must stop for locals and weekenders exploring the Wollondilly area” smiled Jacob. An iconic project is underway to preserve and extend the heritage-listed church, with recent approval to add a residential extension to the site. “We are still looking for interested tradies who would like to be involved with the project. This is a once-in-a-lifetime project to have in your portfolio” Jacob explained. For more information about Horse and Harpy, visit www.horseandharpy.com.au. You can also find them on Facebook. r Feature Article: [Cover] Club Triumphs December meet at Horse and Harpy [Above] Jacob Golding and Kimberley Cook working to convert the horse float to a café. Pastor’s Corner Over the last month or so, I have been talking with a man named Mark. He shared with me that he was feeling anxious and concerned, not so much about his health, but more about how secure his lifestyle choices were. Under COVID-19, for a time Mark was stood down from work. He had resumed work, but his working hours had been reduced. Mark has begun to question whether his commitment to buy a large spacious home and the significant mortgage that accompanies it, was the best choice. Now I am not Mark’s financial advisor, but our discussions have led us to talk about faith in God and the spiritual security that comes from a personal relationship with Jesus. In Luke’s gospel, we read about a man of significant wealth named Zacchaeus. For now, let’s call him Zac. Zac was a tax collector, and in Bible times these men collected excessive taxes on behalf of the Romans and were hated by their fellow countrymen the Jews. In addition, tax collectors would add extra tax, which they would skim off into their own pockets. Zac had become very rich following this practice. Jesus was passing through Jericho. Zac had heard about Jesus and was keen to see him in person. Being short in stature, Zac climbed a sycamore tree, so that he could see over the crowd. It is likely that many of his fellow countrymen would have jeered at Zac as he climbed that tree. As Jesus drew near the tree, he looked up and said to Zac, “I am coming to your house”. The Bible records that Zac’s life changed that day, he gave half of his possessions to the poor and re-instated to those that he had cheated, four times the amount.” (Luke 19:8). Mark and I are continuing to discuss the value of a life changing encounter with Jesus Christ. How secure are you about your future? My prayer is that you will remain safe and well during this time of the pandemic, but that you too will experience the life-saving power and security of knowing Jesus.

HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Fermentation – Enhances Nutritive Value of Grains, for Strong Knee Cartilage Microorganisms beneficial for humans are known as probiotics. Whole grains are excellent food sources for probiotic microorganisms, encouraging their multiplication and continued residence in our large intestine. A ‘synbiotic’ is a synergistic-blend of prebiotics (e.g. grains) and probiotics. From previous articles you’ll remember cereal grains contain many antinutrients: digestive enzyme inhibitors, tannins, phytic acid. These components hamper our carbohydrate and protein digesting enzymes, and stop us digesting our food. They reduce vitamin & mineral absorption and are a big ‘reason for minerals deficiencies in’ humans. To avoid these problems, aboriginal cultures traditionally didn’t eat unfermented grains. Rather they soaked/sprouted and ground their grains, then added microbes to make a synbiotic flour mixture, and allowed this to stand often for two days or more, so that microbes could ‘ferment’ the grains. In the fermentation process, probiotic microbes multiply rapidly and spend all their time breaking-down / removing all the antinutritive factors in grains. Microbes also break down proteins (such as gluten) and carbohydrates (such a FOS that cause gas) to make them harmless,
and easy for us to digest and absorb. They also make completely new compounds that serve as healthy food sources for the cells lining our gut. They liberate minerals from phytates, liberate some vitamins and make many new ones for us. Fermentation is the most crucial process for lowering antinutrient content and enhancing nutritive value of cereal-grain foods. Modern cereal foods aren’t fermented (breakfast cereals). Bread makers often leave just 30min for carbon-dioxide production, but no time for true fermenting. You can make fermented grain products yourself. Just mix sprouted organic whole-grain flower with sourdough starter, let it ferment & rise for 48 hours at room temperature, before baking your own healthy bread. Or your rolled oats can be boiled then mixed with kefir yoghurt and even various fruits and nuts, allowed to ferment for 48 hours at room temperature, then placed in the fridge for storage & eaten cold in summer or warmed in winter. This way of eating grains is healthy and provides many nutrients including minerals such as zinc for strong knee cartilage. Eating a diet high in unfermented cereal grains can lead, to nutrient deficiency and weak knee cartilage and knee problems.

We’ve arrived at 2021, and there’s no doubt it has arrived already with it’s own challenges. We’ve all come to terms with the limitations introduced over the past 12 months as a result of COVID. With masks forming part of our ‘everyday’ wear, sanitizer available everywhere we turn and social distancing the ‘new’ norm. Despite this, 2021 will see plenty of new beginnings, wonderful stories and chapters that continue to evolve as we continue on this journey of life. It may be a bumpy ride with hurdles and various obstacles, but rest assured, we’re in it together and we’ll get through this! Look for the beauty in every moment, capture the magic, focus on the positives. It’s our first edition of the year and we are so pleased to be back sharing wonderful local stories of true hope and inspiration! ‘Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be’. Enjoy Your Community News.
