Construction Begins for New Church in Silverdale At last! After a generation of planning, raising funds and a few false starts, it was with great excitement that the first soil was broken for the new Anglican church building in Silverdale. Ed Chapman, a long-term member of the congregation at St Thomas’ Mulgoa, had the honour of handling the shovel. The Rev Chris Braga, the new Senior Minister of the Parish of Glenmore Park and Mulgoa said “It is exciting to see the plans of so many people come to fruition, as a new chapter opens for the Anglican church in the area of Mulgoa”. Mr Greg Silversides, a member of the church, is building the new church building. It will be located at 2265 Silverdale Road and you can see the temporary fencing up as you drive by. As Managing Director of Resmark Homes, Greg has been building houses for almost twenty years and is now building a church! Mr Silversides said, “This is not an ordinary building site. We are building somewhere for people to meet Jesus”. Things have progressed quickly, and the slab has been poured with new grass laid in what is going to be called the ‘Backyard’. The plan is for the building to be completed this year, with everyone in the surrounding community welcome to connect with the activities of the church and their Sunday gatherings. In the meantime, people are welcome to connect with the church online at www.gpa.church. r The official sod turning | Image Supplied FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH MULGOA

Article Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga St Thomas’ Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: gpachurch.online | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am The world isn’t the same. My wife, Beth, is a school teacher and she has written a song for her class to sing as they return to school. It was set to the tune of the ‘Cup Song’ from the movie, Pitch Perfect. My seven-year-old daughter was helping write the song. She wrote the best line: “when coronavirus came, nothing was the same.” As a seven-year-old she nailed it. Her world had changed. We are all learning to live the reality that the world has changed. The only means we have of defending against the virus is to reduce the risk of being exposed to it. That means less interactions with others, physical distancing and selfisolation. The world is a more threatening place. As things go back to ‘normal’ there is always the risk the virus is lurking in the
background, just ready to pounce when you shake someone’s hand or clear your throat. However, as big as coronavirus is, there is something bigger that changed our world. Instead of the fear and uncertainty that coronavirus brings, Jesus’ resurrection brings hope and peace with God. His resurrection from the dead changes everything. It means that death isn’t the end and that his claim to be the Son of God is something to be taken seriously. For all the changes that my daughter has experienced, the song reminded me of one thing that hasn’t changed. We love laughing together around the dinner table. The whole family decided to sing the song too. We sat around the dinner table singing and laughing. It was fun. Some things haven’t changed.

Pastor’s Corner How are you feeling, as some self-isolation restrictions are being eased? Over these last few weeks, I have found myself having conversations with lots of people that previously I had never met before. One couple I was speaking to expressed passionately that they were both looking forward to being set free. I asked them both, what is it that you are being set free from? The husband stated, “I can’t wait to get back to work, instead of working at home!” His wife said, “I can’t wait for everyone to leave for the day, for the kids to go to school and for my husband to go to work”. What restricts your freedom? There are two main aspects that will affect our ability to be free. The first is, ‘worry and anxiety’. Are we so concerned about being safe that we fail to live life in a way that expresses freedom? During this period of self-isolation, some have shut themselves away, in fear of being in contact with someone carrying the virus. Others have continued to live their normal life, whilst practicing all the self-isolation rules. 1 Peter 5:7 says: Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Do

our thoughts and actions show that you are trusting God? The second factor that affects our freedom is our own selfishness and demand for instant gratification. We live in a world that promotes fulfilling your own needs, irrespective of the needs of others. Often people argue that they should be able to do what they want if it does not hurt anyone else. Yet, inevitably it often leads to people using others, to fulfil their own needs and those needs are never completely satisfied. Philippians 2:3 says: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Do our actions show that we value others, or are we too self-centred to think about others? At Warragamba Baptist Church, we have re-commenced services and we follow all the required protocols. Our church is safe, so why not plan a visit. You are free to do so. My prayer for each of you is to remain safe and well and enjoy the freedom that Christ brings.
Biggest Upgrade on the Way for Luddenham Showground Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies recently announced Luddenham Showground will receive a $167,155 upgrade thanks to the NSW Government’s COVID-19 Stimulus Package. Mrs Davies said Luddenham Showground will receive funding from the NSW Government to significantly upgrade and improve its infrastructure and support jobs and the local economy. “This investment will provide a boost for Luddenham Showground and the community by supporting tradies and suppliers with work and strengthening showground infrastructure for the future” Mrs Davies said. Upgrade work will include a brand-new multipurpose shed to replace the old ageing shed and funding to provide a new asphalt driveway and walkway to make the grounds safer and easier to use. Wayne Willmington, spokesperson from the Luddenham Show Society said this investment will enable the Luddenham Show to remain a genuine country show especially as Western Sydney undergoes rapid transformation. “This funding will enable the society to establish its own museum, showcasing the farming and heritage history of Luddenham, next door to Western Sydney Airport and aerotropolis”. Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said the showground upgrades are a big win for local communities. “Hundreds of repairs and upgrades, including new solar lighting, upgraded equipment and new paving will revive our showgrounds while providing support to local tradies and suppliers” Mr Stokes said. This funding comes from the first tranche of spending from the State Government to repair and renew showgrounds across NSW. Crafters Thrive in ISO ‘COVID-19 ISO worked for us’ is something the crafters at Warragamba Hobby Hut can proudly say. The months of isolation provided uninterrupted time for the group to make lots of high-range quality goods. Heritage knitting and embroidery patterns were used to make knitted baby clothes, embroidered cushions, soft toys, and applique baby towel sets. In the days before ‘lockdown’, Hobby Hut crafters were prize-winning exhibitors at the Luddenham Show. Some of the winning items are now for sale in the shop. Hobby Hut will be re-opening its shop in 13th Street, Warragamba on Tuesday 7th July. Normal opening will resume and be every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each Friday Hobby Hut members hold a social morning tea too. Hobby Hut will continue to hold pop-up stalls, attend local markets and trade at Warragamba Damfest. People wishing to get craft help or who want to take up a new craft are welcome to call in on Friday mornings from 10:00am to 12:00pm to chat to their experienced crafters.

Locals, First to Explore Fernhill Estate The Penrith local community will be the first to explore the historic grounds of Mulgoa’s Fernhill Estate, with a new walking track opened to local residents recently. Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said a new 2.6 kilometre walking track within the Estate will trial opening on weekends. “Fernhill Estate was purchased by the Government for public open space in 2018 and will be a fantastic parkland once it’s fully opened, providing more than 400 hectares of open space for the community to enjoy” Mr Stokes said. “In the meantime, we’ve created a new loop track for local residents to tour the grounds and the outside of the homestead in what is one of the earliest surviving estates in the Sydney basin”. Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said two neighbouring properties had also been purchased to expand the Estate. “Fernhill Estate will be a wonderful asset for the people of Western Sydney for generations to come and we are working to restore and repurpose it for public use” Mr Ayres said. “We are developing a Plan of Management that will set out the NSW Government’s vision for the site and outline its future use, management and preservation”. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said the new track will give residents a glimpse of the historic homestead and its grounds. “Surrounded by the Cumberland Plain Woodland and boasting beautiful gardens, lakes, paddocks and sandstone buildings from the 19th Century, Fernhill Estate will provide a haven for visitors to enjoy and wildlife to thrive” Ms Davies said. “COVID-19 has highlighted the importance our parks, tracks and public spaces for the health and wellbeing of the community and this new track will provide a wonderful place for residents to exercise and enjoy the outdoors”. The trial will see the 2.6 kilometre scenic walking loop open for Penrith LGA residents on weekends and public holidays between 10am and 4pm, with the view to extend it to the wider Sydney community as COVID-19 restrictions ease. For the safety of the community, the number of visitors will be capped at 120 people in the morning and 120 people in the afternoon to ensure that social distancing practices can be maintained. Penrith residents will need to register online to book their visit. PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/
Most humans like attention. Little humans particularly so. They like attention so much that they don’t mind whether it’s negative or positive. They would much prefer positive attention as it is unpleasant to be in trouble all the time and not very good for one’s long-term mental health. But if they don’t get any of the good stuff, they will take the negative any day of the week. But here is the trick… 40 years of research tells us that if you want to encourage positive behaviours in your child, you give more attention to positive behaviours. Energy flows where attention goes. If you are paying lots of attention to ‘naughty’, you are going to get a bundle of ‘naughty’. What would you prefer? Positive or negative behaviour? Feed the positive with descriptive praise, connection, smiles, hugs, thumbs up, high fives – lots of positive attention. So, what do you do about the negative behaviours? One strategy is called ‘planned ignoring’. You ignore the minor negative behaviours. Completely withdraw your attention – no talking, no eye contact. As soon as (the split second) your child starts behaving in a positive way, you bring your attention back to your child. No need for lectures or yakking. Chances are your child knows what he or she is doing. Truly, it’s that simple, pay attention to the positive and withdraw your attention from the negative. However, if your child is exhibiting serious mistaken behaviour, planned ignoring is not the right tool for the job. Here are some links for further reading: • https://raisingchildren.net.au/school-age/behaviour/ behaviour-management-tips-tools/planned-ignoring • https://www.thechildrensbookreview.com/weblog/2016/01/ yak-yak-yak-the-trouble-with-modern-parenting-thomas-wphelan-phd.html It is important to be mindful that your child’s behaviour may escalate when you start using Planned Ignoring because s/he is no longer receiving negative attention. Remember to increase your attention to your child’s positive behaviours. Stop using Planned Ignoring if your child’s behaviour escalates to hurting self or others. r

Best in Show: Victoria Celebrates 40 Years What started out as a love of dogs as a child has turned into a successful career for Mulgoa dog enthusiast Victoria Masterfield who this year celebrates 40 years of showing dogs. Victoria will reach the amazing milestone later this year. Her career has taken her all over the world, where she has won many awards since the 1980’s. She also owns a small business, Comb and Collar –
Grooming by Victoria. “My parents showed dogs since I was young, and I grew up with a love of dogs. I first started showing dogs when I was a teenager. This shows my age, but I have been showing dogs for almost 40 years. I specialise in American Cocker Spaniels and currently own 7 dogs. This includes 4 that live with me and I am in partnership with 3 more with my friends” explained Victoria to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. With so many highlights over the years, Victoria has won Best in Show awards and she is driven to win a very special one at home. “Over my 40 years, I have won many Best in Show awards. My most memorable is the Dogs NSW Spring Fair, where it was the first time in history for an American Cocker Spaniel to win the show. My dream is to win Best in Show at Sydney Royal Easter Show” Victoria smiled. Showing dogs can take months of preparation for the big day. Once it arrives, it is often a long day that can be quite rewarding at the end. “The day starts early, prepping the dogs for the show. Washing, blow-drying, and scissoring in the morning before heading to the show early to get a good spot ringside and near my friends. This is followed by a quick blow-dry and scissoring before heading into the ring. If all goes well, I will show the dog 3 times. This is against it’s breed, then against other breeds, then fingers crossed the judge likes the dog and I win Best in Show” she said. With restrictions being lifted and the world slowly returning to normal since the coronavirus pandemic, Victoria is looking forward to returning to the ring. “I feel honoured and privileged to show dogs. I love travelling to places I have never seen, meeting new people, catching up with friends, being with my dogs and hopefully winning prizes” she ended.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington
Now in the fourth month of COVID-19, it is good to see things starting to get back to normal in Luddenham. Both the Prime Minister and Premier were in Luddenham on the 1st of June, to announce that construction will start this year on the $11 billion Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport rail. Under a new agreement between the Morrison and Berejiklian governments, a further $3.5 billion will be injected into the project, which will service the greater Western Sydney region, in time for the opening of Western Sydney International Airport in 2026. The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport includes six proposed metro railway stations. There will be two stations within the airport site - at the airport terminal and at the airport business park, a station serving the commercial heart of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, a station at St Marys (interchanging with the existing suburban railway station and connecting customers with the rest of Sydney’s rail system), a station at Orchard Hills and a station in Luddenham to service the Science Park. Thanks to Tanya Davies MP (Member for Mulgoa) for organising a grant for $167,155.00 for the Luddenham Show Society, as part of the NSW Government’s COVID-19 Stimulus Package. The money will be used to asphalt the main walk and driveways (that has been completed already) as well as a new multipurpose shed. The shed will be 45mx14m with a concrete floor and it will become home for the animal nursery, poultry, small animals pavilion as well as the cattle. This multipurpose building will also be available to be used for other events and functions, of which 15mx14m will be enclosed and the rest will be open. The old cattle pavilion will be pulled down to make way for much bigger rides and the old poultry pavilion will become the new Luddenham Museum. The museum will
focus on the heritage of Luddenham and its rural and farming background, as the area changes with Western Sydney Airport under 2km’s away. If you have anything that may be used in the Luddenham Museum, please email me, or contact the Show Society. The Luddenham Progress Association has also applied for a grant to build toilets on the hall. There was lots of concern around town with a Development Application lodged by Greenfields Resource Recovery to construct a $10 million waste management facility at 344 Park Road. It is planned that the facility would receive up to 95,000 tonnes of construction, demolition, commercial and industrial waste per year, with up to 9,000 tonnes stored on site at any given time. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com.

Designing Your Building Project
Home Design Choices
To plan for a new home, we must consider what the purpose and function of your new home is. In most cases, homes are getting sold after 7 to 9 years of occupation by families and these families will be moving on to larger homes because their children have grown up. They may also be sold, to downgrade because their children have left home, with the present home becoming too large - where they want an easier lifestyle due to age. First new home buyers must consider how many children will be occupying the new home. This will affect how many bedrooms you will need. Will there be extra adults using the home? This will also affect bedrooms and bathroom facilities. Will elderly parents be part of the first new home buyers by building a separate ‘granny flat’ on the site? First home buyers will need to consider if they will entertain often once that they have their own home. Would this mean a larger entertainment area with an Alfresco and/or BBQ area for outdoor entertainment and eating? Theatres and gyms are now rooms that the first home buyers would like to have to keep fit and be entertained. If the homeowner has his own business, an office or study would be an asset. So, you can see that the young first home buyer wants a lot of space and rooms to extend their family, not forgetting the 2-3 car garage. Most of these questions could be asked of for third- and fourthtime home buyers as well. The emphasis will be based on less bedroom space, because most of the older new home buyers have children in their late teens and twenties who are no longer living at home. These families are downgrading into homes that are practically maintenance-free that are easy to maintain with larger entertainment/BBQ areas. They are smaller homes with less gardening or lawns to look after, allowing more ‘free time’ to travel and see Australia and the world. (See next issue for a continuation of this topic)

Happy First Anniversary in the New Premises Can you believe that it has been one year since we moved premises to 49 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills? Wow, time flies! We have settled in well and are loving the new premises. Our new premises are so beautiful with 3m ceilings, double brick throughout, green bull nosed verandahs and lots of open space on the acreage. You will not believe how big the premises are! Come and check out the off leash dog park. Your dog will have so much fun! We even have a cat waiting room now, which is separate from the dogs, so your cat will be less stressed. Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus crisis, we are still performing contactless consults, with the nurse bringing the pet into the hospital and the client waiting in the car. The veterinarians are
calling the client to discuss any health issues and to discuss the treatment plans. The government restrictions are easing, however, as we work so closely together inside the hospital, we cannot be more than 1.5m apart from each other and if one of our staff becomes sick, then we will all become sick and we will have to close the business for 2 weeks or more. We have come so far, and we would hate to go backwards. We cannot wait for the Coronavirus crisis to be over! We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Can my Diet Contribute to Osteoarthritis (OA)? Vitamin K is a fat-soluble nutrient that appears to have a role in OA (Shea 2014). In normal healthy adults, adequate daily intake is only 120 micrograms for men and 90 micrograms for women. Yet vitamin K insufficiency or deficiency is quite common in western populations: • 8-31% of normal healthy adults • ~50% in people suffering hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease • 97% of older subjects taking warfarin A recent publication found people with: 1.very low blood vitamin K were nearly a. twice as likely to have articular cartilage damage & b. just under 3 times as likely to have meniscus damage progression after 3 years compared to people with sufficient vitamin K 2.higher blood levels of protein whose concentration reflects lower vitamin K status, had higher odds of: a. meniscus damage, b. osteophytes, c. bone marrow lesions, d. subarticular cysts 3.very low blood vitamin K levels were more likely to have worsening of articular cartilage and meniscus damage Osteoarthritis is a disease not just of cartilage but of the
underlying bone. Several vitamin K-dependant proteins are present in cartilage and bone. They have weird names such as: 1. MGP 2. GAS-6 3. TGFBI 4. PN or OSF-2 5. GRP 6. BGP or OC All are made by bone & cartilage cells. Each helps keep bone and cartilage healthy. The last step in the production processes of all these proteins requires vitamin K. If vitamin K is low, each of the proteins is still made (except for the last step), but most don’t function. Thus bone & cartilage maintenance suffers, resulting in increased risk of OA over time. So, why is vitamin K deficiency so common? • western diets typically contain foods that are poor sources of vitamin K, • the vitamin is difficult to absorb from our typical vitamin K rich foods such as spinach, • we eat few truly fermented foods such as Natto where vitamin K is high and absorbable • chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are common & decrease absorption • medicaments such as warfarin significantly lower vitamin K levels r Image: https://www.japanesecooking101.com/wp-content/ uploads/2014/02/IMG_8021.jpg

July has arrived and it is bitterly cold. As I write this, my feet are snug in slipper sox by the heater. We are making slow progress, one day at a time, with the relaxing of restrictions due to COVID-19. This month sees the reinstatement of team sports, and increased numbers in group gatherings with steady increases at pubs, clubs and restaurants. We’ve also witnessed some setbacks in neighbouring States, which has caused some trepidation in further releasing of restrictions. If you’re anything like me, I’ve used the time in isolation wisely by working on mini projects that I seemingly ‘never’ had time for before this. Coming out of time in ‘lockdown’ sees my freshly renovated caravan at the ready for many a trip, particularly relevant due to the current state of play with restrictions on travel and the delayed reopening of the borders. The perfect excuse to ‘holiday at home!’. It’s time to become a tourist in your own backyard. We are fortunate to be at the foothills of some amazing hidden gems...... time to explore! Enjoy Your Community News. ‘Almost everything will work again if you ‘unplug’ it for a few minutes, including you!’.
