2021 National Trust Heritage Awards Winners Announced The National Trust (NSW) has held its 2021 National Trust Heritage Awards ceremony, presented by the ABC’s Simon Marnie and announced winners in 10 categories and three individual prizes that celebrate outstanding practice in the field of heritage. Among the awarded entries was the Conservation of the Mulgoa Valley as a cultural landscape (entered by the Friends of Fernhill and Mulgoa Valley Incorporated) which won in the Advocacy category. The Friends of Fernhill and Mulgoa Valley Inc is a non-profit organisation that focuses on safeguarding the cultural and natural heritage of Fernhill Estate and the Mulgoa Valley. Mulgoa Valley’s exceptionally rich landscape of scenic vegetation and cultural (Aboriginal and European) historical features is unique in the Sydney region. “The National Trust award encourages FFMV to continue advocating for the conservation of Fernhill Estate and the Mulgoa Valley – an area unique in the Sydney Basin for its heritage buildings, cultural and natural landscapes, rural land and biodiversity” said Michael Barkley, President of Friends of Fernhill and Mulgoa Valley Inc. The ceremony was held at heritage-listed Dolton House in Pyrmont, featuring special guest speakers: President of the National Trust of Australia (NSW), Neil Wykes OAM; the National Trust’s Director of Conservation, David Burdon; Chair of the Heritage Council of NSW, Frank Howarth and the Chair of the National Trust Heritage Awards Judging Committee, Matt Devine. The annual National Trust Heritage Awards is in its 27th year. The awards recognise projects, initiatives and individuals that demonstrate excellence in the conservation, protection, and interpretation of Aboriginal, built, natural and cultural heritage. The awards are the signature event of the Australian Heritage Festival in New South Wales and are proudly supported by the NSW Government through the Heritage Council of NSW. Debbie Mills, Chief Executive Officer of the National Trust (NSW) said: “COVID-19 brought a challenge to everyone working in heritage for 2020 and the early months of 2021, and what the National Trust Heritage Awards has revealed is that heritage has endured, emerged resilient and continues to demonstrate its importance to the people of New South Wales”. r

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington At the time the time of going to print, there is still lots of uncertainty about what the Old Northern Road through Luddenham Village will be called. In October last year, the RMS called for suggestions on what the new name should be (I actually submitted that it should be called The Old Northern Road). During March, the sign saying Northern Road was replaced with the new name Elizabeth Drive and then in May it was changed again, this time to Willmington Road. There has been no official word on a name or numbering at this stage. An update from the Western Sydney Planning Partnership is that they are continuing to review the submissions and are starting to develop recommendations for the Minister’s consideration. They anticipate that this process will continue into June. Also, The NSW Government has appointed Professor Roberta Ryan from the University of Newcastle to the new role of Independent Community Commissioner to help address the concerns of landowners in the Western Sydney Aerotropolis. The Commissioner’s role will involve addressing landowners’ concerns; providing access to independent expert advice such as planning, valuation and development processes, advising on actions to assist people on environmentally constrained land and those who need support on compassionate grounds, making recommendations regarding strategic land acquisitions that may also address community concerns, and connecting landholders with other agencies and relevant government stakeholders to provide clarity and support. During the month, I represented the Progress Association at a meeting with Tanya Davies MP Member for Mulgoa where the following issues were discussed. The Aerotropolis including

planning, the green zones and time frames for development. As well, the mess and safety issues on both corners of Park Road and Old Northern Rd, what is happening with the name of Old Northern Road, signs required on the new Northern Road directing motorists into Luddenham Village plus other street signs that are required. Thanks to a grant from the NSW Premier, the Luddenham Progress Association has been able to prune overhanging trees, fix a water problem and repair and paint the hall roof. Planning for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project has progressed, with lodgment of the Submissions Report. The Environmental Impact Statement for the project was placed on public exhibition in late 2020 with the community encouraged to have their say on the project. The Submissions Report responds to issues raised by the community and stakeholders during the exhibition. Featuring the iconic music of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (ABBA) with book and lyrics by Tim Rice, the worldwide stage hit CHESS THE MUSICAL is presented as a semi-staged concert style production featuring Logie-nominated and recent star of CHICAGO Natalie Bassingthwaighte (Grease, Rent, Love, Loss, and What I Wore); Aria chart-topping vocalist Paulini (The Bodyguard, Saturday Night Fever, Hair); New York Metropolitan Opera singer Alexander Lewis (West Side Story for Handa Opera, The Merry Widow, Ragtime); semi-finalist in The Voice 2020 Mark Furze (Home and Away, Underbelly, It Takes Two); musical theatre favourite Rob Mills (Wicked, Ghost, Grease); opera singer Eddie Muliaumaseali’i (Show Boat, Das Rhinegold, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and musical theatre all-rounder Brittanie Shipway (The Voice, Big Fish, The Sapphires) with backing by a professional twenty-five piece orchestra. CHESS THE MUSICAL is inspired by extraordinary real-life events and first premiered to glowing reviews in London’s West End in 1986 starring the beloved Elaine Paige. The West End season ran for three years, resulting in a BBC listener poll ranking CHESS THE MUSICAL seventh in a list of ‘Number One Essential Musicals’ of all time. Featuring hits including I Know Him So Well - recognised in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest selling UK chart single ever by a female duo - and the upbeat pop favourite One Night in Bangkok, music from CHESS THE MUSICAL is known the world over. CHESS THE MUSICAL tells the story of a complex love triangle combined with dramatic political intrigue, set against the background of the Cold War in the early 1980s, where Soviet and American forces attempt to manipulate an international chess championship for political gains. CHESS THE MUSICAL is produced by impresario Adrian Storey from StoreyBoard Entertainment (Barnum, Follies, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and directed by renowned director Tyran Parke (Barnum, Follies, Sunday in the Park with George) and with Musical Direction by David Piper (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Boyfriend, The Boy From Oz), Set and Costume Design by Dann Barber (Barnum, 33 Variations), Choreography by Freya List, Lighting Design by Gavan Swift and Sound Design by award-winning designer Michael Waters. r Brittanie on stage at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne | Image: Jeff Busby

MARGERY TO TURN 103 YEARS YOUNG

A message from

Nathaniel

For many years, a common local complaint has been the state of our roads. Recently, the issue was brought into sharper focus with the release of the annual NRMA Rate Your Road survey, which identified Wollondilly Shire Council as having the worst roads in Greater Sydney. To be honest, it is a fair rap. Many of the roads in the shire almost require a monster truck to navigate the many potholes.

With Picton Chamber President Geoff O’Brien.

Small business is critical to our local economy. As major employers, they are the lifeline of many villages and towns. Their success is critical to a vibrant community. I meet regularly with Chamber Presidents to ensure I am kept up to date on trending issues and can adequately represent this important constituency in the Parliament.

Margery Jakeman turned 103 last month and I was priviledged to meet her at the Taara Gardens Retirement Village in Thirlmere. My office was contacted to alert me of Margery’s upcoming milestone and I jumped at the opportunity to present her personally with a congratulatory certificate. Birthday and Anniversary congratulatory certificates are a great way to recognise the personal achievements of loved ones. Upon request, my office can arrange messages from the NSW Governor, the Premier, and yours truly!

VACCINE ROLLOUT UPDATE With Appin Chamber President Lauren Eade.

LAST MONTH IN PARLIAMENT

Covid vaccination in Australia is FREE for all citizens, permanent residents and most visa holders. Vaccination is voluntary. In summary, the Commonwealth’s schedule for the

Bills Debated (1) delivery of the Covid vaccination is as follows: • Payroll Tax Amendment (Jobs Plus) Bill 2021 Private Members’ Statements (1) • Wollondilly Infrastructure

Phase 1a ‑ Quarantine, frontline health and essential services, aged care/disability care staff and residents.

Community Recognition Notices (9)

Phase 1b ‑ Over 70s and adults with specified medical conditions and indigenous adults over 55. Phase 2a ‑ Over 60s, high risk workers and all indigenous adults. Phase 2b ‑ the rest of the adult population. Phase 3 ‑ Under 16s, if recommended. It is currently recommended that the Covid vaccine by AstraZeneca is preferred for adults over 50 years old and Pfizer is preferred in adults aged under 50 years.

Wollondilly Shire Council is responsible for maintaining approximately 825 kilometres of road. The question might be asked: How has the council allowed its roads to deteriorate to the appalling state that many of them are now in? By council’s own estimates, it would require $50 million, which it simply does not have, to bring the three main arterial routes—Menangle Road, which stretches 14 kilometres; Remembrance Drive, 39 kilometres; and Silverdale Road, 37 kilometres—to a satisfactory standard. Poorly maintained roads cause accidents and cost lives. Silverdale Road alone had 43 reportable accidents in the five years to 2019. This statistic is unacceptable. I am no shrinking violet when it comes to criticising and getting stuck into local councils in my electorate. But it is not entirely fair to blame Wollondilly Shire Council for the current predicament of its roads. When Labor was last in government, they transferred a number of State‑owned roads to the council. Let there be no mistake: This was a blatant act to remove liabilities from the then Labor Government balance sheet and shift them to the hardworking mum‑and‑dad ratepayers in Wollondilly Shire. In the Parliament last month, I called upon the present government to undo Labor’s wrong, and to again take responsibility for the maintenance of Menangle Road, Remembrance Drive, and Silverdale Road. Since returning to government in 2011, the Coalition have done an outstanding job of catching up on the years of infrastructure neglect under the previous Labor governments. Only a few weeks ago, I was joined by the Minister for Education in opening the newly redeveloped Picton High School. It looks fantastic and is an example of long‑overdue infrastructure that the Coalition Government is delivering. Transferring roads like Silverdale back to State ownership is one of the last legacy issues to be dealt with. I will continue to advocate for you to ensure it is done as it will improve safety and restore equality to Wollondilly ratepayers.

60 Wonderful Years There is an amazing milestone in Wollondilly Shire this month, with Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club celebrating their 60th birthday. A birthday celebration night will be held on Saturday 19th June at the club and will include a three-course dinner and entertainment from the Rock City Saints. Tickets are on sale now for $50 and are sure to sell-out. Founded in 1961, the club was originally known as the Warragamba and District Workmens Club. It operated with a committee of 17, which included a President, Vice President, Trustees and Committee members. The first 100 to join the club were classified as Foundation Members. Sixty years later, three are with us today. The building which became the club was originally the ‘wet canteen’ built by the Water Board in the 1940’s for the workers on the construction of the Warragamba Dam. It was on the site currently occupied by Warradale Mens Shed. The 1970’s were a time of change for clubs, with all becoming ‘Ltd’ and a Board of Directors replacing the Committee system. Major changes were ushered in the 80’s, importantly with females now permitted to become full members, with the same benefits as male members. The name of the club also changed to Warragamba

Workers and Sporting Club Ltd. The 90’s were more settled and the 2000’s saw the consideration of renovations. Tragedy struck on 11th April in 2001, when an electrical fault caused a fire and extensive damage to the club. Sadly, the remains were bulldozed. A new club was built opposite the site (where it now stands) and was opened on Saturday 19th March in 2005. The GFC soon hit and impacted heavily on pubs and clubs, resulting in up to 650 clubs closed or amalgamated over ten years. After weathering the storm, COVID-19 hit in 2020 and the club was closed for several months. Government grants and initiatives like Job Keeper assisted during this time. Moving forward to 2021 and things are returning to normal for the Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club. Membership is nearly 2,600 and growing and the club is forecast to have a good year ahead. r Feature Article: [Cover + Above] Lots of history in 60 years | Images/Article: Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club

Last month, I wrote about domestic and family violence. It is a hot topic at the moment, and rightly so. Domestic and family violence causes so much disruption to people’s lives and has ripple effects for children, women, and men. 1 in 4 families are affected by DFV, and that’s probably a conservative number because so much of it goes unreported. 1 woman on average is killed each week by her partner or ex-partner. Have you been watching See What You Made Me Do on SBS? If not, check out this 3 part documentary on SBS Demand. But watch and listen carefully in the second episode how one man minimises his violence and blames the woman. ‘If she didn’t nag me I wouldn’t have snapped and tried to strangle her.’ What? That one slipped past the editing crew. Since when did someone’s words justify you trying to kill him/her? Have you also seen the television ads ‘Unmute Yourself’ (https://youtu.be/9g4-puN2K9o)? They are brilliant. A boy is seen being aggressive to a girl, and one parent says ‘he probably just likes her’, and the other parent reflects ‘no, there is no excuse, we have to stop him’. A fella on the sidelines at the footy tells a young male player ‘stop playing like a girl’ and an older man says ‘what’s wrong with playing like a girl?’. And finally I come to my point of this article. There is no excuse for violence of words or actions. What we teach our little boys is how they will grow up. Don’t give them a sense of entitlement, that just because they are boys they can do as they please. If they grow up rough they will be rough men, and it might be your daughter or daughter-in-law that they will be treating rough. Don’t blame the victim, ‘if she didn’t do this, he wouldn’t do that’. Teach your children that they can’t control anybody else but themselves and they alone are responsible for their thoughts, words, and actions. I have had the opportunity and honour to observe a Men’s Behaviour Change group recently. There are a few organisations around (BaptistCare, Relationships Australia) that offer individual counselling and groupwork for men who use coercion, control, and violence with their partners and in their families. These programs are supportive and gentle, but they do challenge the men to take responsibility for their own behaviour. What I have learnt from the men in the groups is don’t grow your boys up rough. Acknowledge that they have feelings, and allow them to express their feelings. Grow them up as humans, regardless of gender. We all have the power to end violence.

Local School Makes History with Walk for Terry Fox

On Friday 7th May, the staff and students at Mulgoa Public School came together to join their friend Matthew Reid to become the first school in Australia to participate in a walk to support Walk for Terry Fox. The walk helped to raise money to support The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. To date, the students and families at Mulgoa Public School have raised close to $300. Matthew is a local Silverdale resident who will be walking from Glenmore Park High School to Canberra in September this year. He hopes to raise over $40,000 in donations through his ‘Walk for Terry Fox – To Inspire or Kids’ charity event. The day was a big success, and it was great to see, not only an Australian school but a local school make history as the first in the country to take part in the Walk for Terry Fox. rMulgoa Public School students with Matthew Reid | Image/Article: Mulgoa Public School

Wallacia Community Choir This new community singing group is held every Wednesday at 7:00pm in Wallacia Progress Hall, on the corner of Greendale Road and Roma Avenue. It is a fun social event for all ages with everyone welcome and no singing or music experience required. The words are supplied, and they sing popular songs to background music. The evenings are kept COVID-SAFE with physical distancing maintained. A gold coin donation goes towards the upkeep of the Progress Hall. Research has shown that singing, especially group singing, helps boost your immunity, and reduces your cortisol level which helps you feel more relaxed and reduces anxiety. Singing is known to release endorphins, the feel-good brain chemical that makes you feel uplifted and happy. Singing can lower your blood pressure and can be an excellent form of exercise. Even if you’re healthy, your lungs will get a workout and you can strengthen your diaphragm, back and facial muscles. Singing also helps with blood circulation and can help strengthen throat and palate muscles, which helps stop snoring and sleep apnea. Further research has shown that singing groups give people a sense of belonging and can improve your social life with new friendships. In addition, scientists have identified a tiny organ in the ear called the sacculus, which responds to the frequencies created by singing. The response creates an immediate sense of pleasure, regardless of what the singing sounds like! Not only that, singing can simply take your mind off the day’s troubles to boost your alertness, concentration, and memory. Please phone Margaret on 0407 230499 if you have any questions. They are looking forward to meeting you. r

Breaking News On Tuesday 11 May 2021, the Land and Environment Court decided to uphold the appeal lodged by the Catholic Metropolitan Cemetery Trust (CMCT) for the Memorial Park at Wallacia. I am extremely disappointed by this decision. The Report “The 11th Hour – Solving Sydney’s Cemetery Crisis” was provided to the Government outlining a way forward to address the urgent burial needs for NSW. The Government received the report in February 2021 and is now finalising their response. As a result, the Government has written to the CMCT directing them not to progress on their DA approval or plans to sell Crown Land. This letter is great news for the community of Wallacia, who have fought for many years to save the Wallacia Golf Club and I remain absolutely determined to fight this proposal to turn the Wallacia Golf Club into a cemetery. Rise and Shine

It’s no secret that many of us are time poor and that there just aren’t enough hours in the day to fit our busy lifestyles into. What if we told you that there was an early morning club where you could join like minded individuals to help start your day right? The 5.30 Club Penrith has launched. The group meets at 5:30am from Monday to Friday at Starbucks on Castlereagh Road in Penrith, where members work together on their own passion projects, side hustles or overall personal development as the sun comes up. Local Kirstene Ciappara is the group organiser of the 5.30 Club Penrith. “My motivation for starting a group in Penrith came after I experienced the 5.30 Club Bondi earlier in the year. Everyone was so welcoming at the Bondi club and it was a really motivating environment to be in because everyone was ‘winning the morning’. This really inspired me because I felt like we didn't have any spaces or environments that empowered people to pursue these things whilst connecting with others who did the same” explained Kirstene. “I attend the club every day, so there's always a smiling face to welcome new people. We have another 5-6 members that each come 2-3 days per week” she added. Some of the activities that the group participates in during the ‘power hour’ include personal development (reading and journaling), learning (courses and online study) and connecting with other members. “Whilst we do priortise some form of ‘work’ during the power hour, we really value connection as well and it's amazing what can come from that relationship” Kirstene replied. The 5.30 Club Penrith is a part of a much wider 5.30 Club movement across Australia, which began in 2019. It is hoped that there will be opportunities to connect with people from other clubs with events and initiatives in the future. “Being a part of the group means that I consciously start my day and that can be an absolute game changer for how the rest of my days pan out. I also really value the connection piece; I love meeting new people, especially ones that are like-minded, driven and eager to create a life they love” smiled Kirstene. Wollondilly Council Seeks Community Feedback on Road Works Program Wollondilly Council has an ongoing commitment to fixing the road network, investing the largest budget to date into improving local roads. Council is also in the process of updating its Road Works Program and is seeking the input of community members, asking residents to select up to five road segments that they would like to see prioritised in the Program. Wollondilly residents are invited to head to Council’s Customer Portal to make selections on which road segments they believe need attention and why. Mayor Robert Khan said, “Having responded to some of the community’s views on where their priorities lie, we want to continue to build on this”. “On top of the data we have collected, we want to make sure the road program considers the priorities of the community up front. This feedback will help us paint the full picture for our program”. Council’s Road Works Program is being developed to tackle the challenge of bringing the road network up to standard and is a long-term plan. It is developed using road condition and traffic data, along with modelling that looks at how the road condition will change over time. This information can be found in the Asset Management Strategy and helps Council to deliver the most effective and efficient road works

program for the Shire within the available budget. Residents are encouraged to take up this opportunity to let Council know which areas of road they think need attention within the program, and their feedback will help refine the program. v Have your say | Image/Article: Wollondilly Shire Council HEALTH MATTERS

How to Stretch Successfully – But Without Pain To stretch effectively, you should pretty much do the opposite of what most people do. That is, you should: 1. Stretch regularly (just once-twice a week will do), 2. Spend time on each stretch, 3. Use a slow deliberate stretching technique, 4. Avoid any pain, 5. Relax into the stretch, 6. Use regular and deep breathing, 7. Never force the stretch Technique: For a left hamstring stretch, bring your left leg onto a table (10-15cm higher than your knees; higher if you’re very flexible). Keep your left leg straight and draw your left foot toward you. Bend forward at the hip keeping your back straight. See if you can touch your toes or stretch past them, then come up/out of this ‘test’ stretch. Now bend your left arm at the elbow. Keeping your back straight, bend forward at the hip again till your left elbow rests on your left thigh and your back remains straight. Slide your elbow toward your left foot, until you feel a good stretch in your

16 June 2021 www.mulgoagazette.com.au

left hamstrings (but no pain). Relax, breathe in and out deeply and regularly, wait until the stretch completely subsides and you’re comfortable at this position (may take 30 – 60 seconds, just be patient). Now slide your elbow further forward along your thigh until you again feel a strong stretch, but no pain. Stop there, repeat the same deep relaxed breathing until you cannot feel the stretch. Continue this for 4-6 cycles (more if you like). Once you’re happy with the number of stretching cycles you’ve completed, test how far your left fingers/hand moves past your toes now. You should find that you have significantly greater range of motion in your left hamstring than when you started. Now repeat the same for your right hamstrings. Note: people with lower back issues should stretch their hamstrings lying down to avoid straining their back. This technique allows you to gently fatigue the hamstring muscle-spindles. It takes a little more time, but only needs to be done once a week, and is likely to be much more successful long term and not painful!

Rats And Mice – Caution With Rat Bait Toxicity In Your Pet

It is cold and dark, so we spend more time indoors, but you won’t be the only one seeking shelter. As temperatures drop, mice and rats head indoors to search for food, and they might pick your house for their new residence. STOP! Most rat baits are really dangerous to pets. We have seen several rat bait ingestion in dogs recently, and with treatment they survive. Rat bait is a silent killer. Unlike snail bait which causes violent symptoms within minutes after ingestion, most rat bait takes 3-5 days before it starts to take effect in a pet. There are different kinds of rat bait available; the most common are anti-coagulant poisons that stop blood from clotting normally, resulting in excessive bleeding. The development of clinical signs is usually delayed for 3-7 days after the dog or cat

consumes the poison. Common signs of rat bait poisoning may include: • Obvious external signs of haemorrhage (dependent on where the bleeding is; for example bruising, bloody faeces or urine, nose bleeds, vomiting blood). • Lethargy • Weakness • Wobbliness • Loss of appetite • Distended abdomen from bleeding into the abdomen • Coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing from bleeding into the chest • Pale gums from anaemia • Bulging of eyes from bleeding behind the eyes • Sudden death with no obvious clinical signs can also occur. If you know that your pet has eaten rat bait, contact your veterinarian immediately. Vomiting can be induced to remove as much of the rat bait as possible and treatment can be started immediately. Rat bait kills rats, mice and your pet if they ingest them. Try more pet-friendly ways to get rid of vermin. Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. v Image: www.pixabay.com

Tanya’s Ten Years in Parliament

Tanya Davies has celebrated ten years in the NSW parliament, representing the local community of Mulgoa. Mrs Davies was elected in a landslide victory at the 2011 election with a swing towards her of 23% and since then has been re-elected at both the 2015 and 2019 elections. Mrs Davies will contest the seat again at the 2023 State Election, saying that there is more to be done for the people of Western Sydney. “I ran for State Parliament ten years ago because I was about to start my family in Western Sydney and could see the neglect of 16 years of Labor in failing to deliver critical infrastructure, so I was compelled to do something about it” Tanya Davies said. “Over these ten years I have been able to achieve significant results for our community. Some of my proudest moments include getting the St Marys Methadone Clinic relocated, rebuilding St Clair High school after a tragic fire as well as seeing the Glenmore Park High School’s Performing Arts and Learning Centre being planned with construction to start soon”. Mrs Davies is excited for the growth of Western Sydney with the arrival of Sydney’s second international airport and will continue to be the voice of the community in Parliament. “I am firmly committed to being the community’s strongest advocate and I will speak louder to ensure that our infrastructure, services, opportunities and life-style are second-to-none”. During her ten years of Parliament, Tanya Davies also served as the Minister for Mental Health, Women and Ageing in the Berejiklian Government from 2017-2019. As Minister for Women, Mrs Davies helped deliver the Baby Bundle bag that is given to new mums and $700 million investment into mental health services across NSW.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH MULGOA

Article Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga St Thomas’ Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: gpachurch.online | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am My family loves watching MasterChef. At the end of the first season, we even had a MasterChef party to watch the grand finale. I baked one of the chocolate cakes featured on the show and invited a bunch of friends over to watch it in on the big screen. The cake took ages to make but was great fun! One of the things I noticed was the way the contestants used the word ‘hope’. It would often go like this, “it usually takes 20 minutes to cook, but I only have 5 minutes! I hope that it cooks in time”. The word ‘hope’ here is another way of just expressing wishful thinking. There is no way you can cook something in 5 minutes that would normally take 20! The word ‘hope’ is used often in the Bible. Instead of being ‘wishful thinking, the idea of ‘hope’ in the Bible is of confidence in the future because of what God has promised. A promise tells you something about the future. A promise from God is something you can be sure of. God’s promise of forgiveness is more like the immunity pin in MasterChef. The immunity pin would give the bearer safety from an elimination challenge. The pin gave them confidence they could miss one elimination round. It gave them confidence they would progress a little further in the competition. Trusting God’s promise is like an eternal immunity pin that can give you real hope the future! Pastor’s Corner

Recently, a young woman was explaining to me that she had been through some challenging times. Falling pregnant at sixteen, then the father of the child abandoning her; facing the judgment and criticism of friends and family. But this young woman is no victim, she has brought up her son, who is now five, and seemingly she is a good, responsible, and loving mother. She shared with me that she found it hard to believe in a loving God. Recently, she had gone to church. Her absence meant the format was so unfamiliar to her that it made her feel uncomfortable. Then to add to this feeling, several people asked her where her husband was? Awkward, because she is a single mother. The Bible records, that the teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus stating, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say? They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let anyone of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again, he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared, “Go now and leave your life of sin.” (John 8: 3 – 11) In answer to my young friend: How do I know God is a loving God? It is because he doesn’t condemn me for all those things I got wrong. Rather, he forgives me and calls on me to follow him and live the life that he has called me to live.

Yep! Winter has arrived. It’s fresh, the air is crisp and oooh my frozen toes are now snuggled nicely into the handknitted socks my wonderful friend Betty made for me! Last month we saw music concerts back on the agenda, along with a number of other community events. While we enjoy the return of these long awaited festivities, it’s not without noticeable differences of our ‘new’ post-covid life....checking in, social distancing, smaller groups or masks in larger crowds. A number of these initiatives are definitely a step forward for our overall future wellness. Narelle continues on with last month’s topic of Domestic Family Violence, because it’s too important not to. Find more on this in ‘Parents Corner’. My dear Aunty celebrates 83 amazing years filled with memories and heart-warming treasures. As Aunty Bronwyn would say, ‘never stop believing in hope because miracles happen every day’. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
