A True Local Hero Silverdale’s Karen Bedford has been recognised for her volunteer work within the community and was named both the Local Hero and Citizen of the Year of Wollondilly Shire at the 2021 Australia Day Awards. The Awards, which were held locally at a special ceremony at Picton Botanical Gardens on Australia Day were hosted by Wollondilly Shire Council and presented by Councillor Robert Khan, the Mayor of Wollondilly. Karen’s work with lost and found animals within the local area is immense. She goes above and beyond to locate, scan, care for and return our beloved pets in times of need. It’s fair to say she may even know the name of every dog that lives in Silverdale! She was anonymously nominated for the two categories of the 2021 Australia Day Awards. Karen was also previously nominated twice, in 2018 for Local Hero and 2019 for Citizen of the Year. During the recent 2020 bushfires, Karen was part of a group that came together to help feed wildlife that were hungry and injured and whose habitat had been affected. “It is an amazing honour to be recognised for your work. I enjoy what I do when helping animals and it doesn’t feel like a job at all” explained Karen. On behalf of the Mulgoa Valley Gazette, we would like to extend our congratulations to Karen and the selfless work that she does within our community. Thank you, Karen! Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Well, the future of Luddenham is now up to the Western Sydney Planning Partnership and the State Parliament, with the Public Exhibition now closed after lots of meetings and submissions. Let’s hope that common sense prevails and Luddenham gets to flourish. Thank you to everyone that took the time to make a submission. After years of wondering what will become of Luddenham, time will now tell. Sydney Water have been running several information sessions regarding sewer and water to the Luddenham area. They are planning an Advanced Water Recycling Centre at Kemps Creek, just north of Elizabeth Drive. This will deliver essential wastewater services, as well as recycled water and energy which will help shape the Western Sydney Parkland City vision. They expect construction to start in 2022. Luddenham will also have access to an extra 2.4 million litres of recycled water a day as part of the 5 billiondollar new Sydney Science Park project in Luddenham. The project will service up to 20,000 people with recycled water. Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey MP said the project is a blueprint for the continued
large-scale development of recycled water. March is normally very busy around Luddenham with the Annual Show, but this year due to COVID 19, the 2021 Luddenham Show has been cancelled with the next show now to be held in March 2022. The fortnightly Country Markets are still going ahead and will be held on the 7th and 21st of March. Western Sydney Airport have donated over 400 tonnes of Rotarmill from the old Badgerys Creek Road, within the new Airport to the Luddenham Show Society. Big Thanks to the Team that had it all delivered to the Showground to repair the old roadways that were full of potholes and slippery in the wet weather. Please support Luddenham local business, now with the Northern Road diverted. It is quite easy to shop in Luddenham. r Luddenham Showground Rotarmill | Image Supplied

Wally Cox: A Legend of the Track Mulgoa’s Wally Cox may have retired from motor racing two years ago, but it’s still very much in his veins as he reflects on his stellar 62-year career on the track. It all began in 1957 when a then 20-year-old Wally completed a 3-month boot camp and bought his first race bike, a AJS motorcycle with his deferred pay. He then joined Merrylands District MCC after this. “After attending a few race meetings as a spectator, I purchased an AJS, which had been prepared and raced. I had my first race at a dirt track at Vineyards, a small community out past Blacktown. I found out that I had a lot to learn. I soon formed the opinion that some blokes were naturals and others were learners. I was definitely one of the latter” reflected Wally. After gaining some experience at not falling off the bike, Wally started racing at Moorebank Scramble track, which was one of the first licenced venues. “I found that I was quite a good goer at scrambles, however I did not have finances necessary to purchase good machinery, resulting in frequent mechanical failures while in winning positions” he said. In 1968, as a member of the Merrylands Club, Wally was in a team of five riders who took part in the first of a series of six-hour dirt track events. Despite having no sponsorship, his team claimed victory on a twenty-year-old T100 Triumph that they rode. Fast forward to 2016 which saw Wally win the ‘Over 70’s’ event at the Annual Charity Race Day over three rounds at the age of 79. “The event was designed for riders over 70 years, however only two riders over 70 entered, so riders over 65 were accepted into the event. The rider that came second was 65. I enjoyed many aspects of the sport, towards the later years and mainly the camaraderie” smiled Wally. Wally’s involvement in raising funds for charity race events was considerable over the years. The charity events promoted by the City of Penrith Motorcycle Club averaged $2,500 each year over twenty years. The funds were donated to various charities. In 2019, in conjunction with Nepean Valley Rotary and with a special grant of $5,000, they also raised over $16,000.

Rotary Gives Back to the Community The Rotary Clubs of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley and St Marys recently joined forces to thank the first responders and emergency workers for their efforts during 2020. This effort was the brainchild of Rotary District 9675, who decided that they would provide all frontline workers with lamingtons on Australia Day as a small token to say, ‘thank you’. Working with various bakeries, clubs in their district managed to deliver over 20,000 individually wrapped and labelled lamingtons to various pre-arranged sites. “Rotary felt that following everything that happened during 2020 with the fires, floods, drought and COVID, the frontline workers worked above and beyond to provide their services during some very turbulent times” explained Jan Bradley of the Rotary Club of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley. Some of the sites that were delivered the lamingtons included Nepean Hospital, RFS Command at Regentville, Fire and Rescue at Regentville and St Marys Police Station. The Rotary Club of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley, along with other clubs in the area, host a sausage sizzle stall at Harvey Norman in Penrith and at the Luddenham Church Markets each month. They support the Luddenham Show Society by looking after the entrance gates at the Luddenham Country Show each year. Other activities include donating to five schools in the local area to go towards books for their end of year presentations. They have also joined up with the Rotary Club of Rylstone to support local farmers during the drought by sending donations to be distributed to those in need. “We are always looking for people to join our club. During the past year, mental health has been a big issue because people have been restricted with getting out into our community. By coming to our weekly meetings, it gives you the opportunity to meet other people and to know more about what is happening within the area. We have some interesting guest speakers about twice a month on a wide range of subjects” said Jan to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. The Rotary Club of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley meets at the Wallacia Hotel every Wednesday at 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start. Pop in and say hello and have a chat to see if you would like to join their club.

Neighbour Day - Connected People Connect Communities Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with their neighbours. Neighbours matter (whether near, far, or online), and now, more than ever, is the time to make creative connections and to stay connected. Neighbours can help and support each other in times of need, as we have seen during the numerous challenging times over the past year. A neighbour is also no longer necessarily defined by location alone and can be someone in your street, or the wider community, your workplace, or online. Maybe in Australia, or perhaps overseas. Neighbours are those in our geographical and selected communities that show they care and perhaps offer a hand when we need it most. Traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday in March annually, the theme for Neighbour Day 2021 is ‘Every day is neighbour day’. This year, they are encouraging Australians to help break down loneliness in our communities by building meaningful and sustainable social connections with the people around them. People experience loneliness across the age and social spectrum, including young people, people living with their families, and even people surrounded by others in the workplace. For Neighbour Day 2021 they are asking everyone to get creative, reach out, and to encourage social connection. Connected people connect communities. Neighbours connect and provide support to those living next door and to those further away. We have the capacity to build communities beyond our physical locations. This year, they want you to get creative and contribute to building and sustaining the communities we all need. Now is the perfect time to organise your ideas and plan your connection opportunities. If public health advice doesn’t permit traditional gatherings, then they encourage people to get creative and find alternative ways to reach out to your neighbours. New Principal for Luddenham Public School Luddenham Public School has a new principal and he’s ready to bring the fun back to learning. Sean Holmes has recently been appointed as Luddenham Public School’s new principal. He has a wealth of small school experience and is bringing a deep understanding of differentiated learning to the school. Mr Holmes and his staff have been looking closely at student data and are targeting areas for growth to ensure each student is given the best opportunity to achieve their potential. Another key focus area for students will be centred on wellbeing, with the school instilling the mantra of ‘connect, thrive and succeed’. Luddenham Public School’s staff, led by Mr Holmes, will be creating teaching, and learning environments that enable students to be healthy, happy, engaged, and successful as well as develop a sense of belonging to their school. You will also see Mr Holmes out on the playground each day with the students happily joining in on a game of touch football or soccer and teaching them a few skills along the way. He will be focusing on community engagement and has sat down with the school captains and staff to plan out some fantastic events for the community to participate in when COVID restrictions have eased. Not one to stay seated in his office, Mr Holmes is in each of the three classrooms every day working with groups of students on developing their academic and social skills. He is always happy to have a chat with parents and has thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the community. Mr Holmes is looking forward to a big year in 2021 and has hit the ground running. r Feature Article: [Above] Ariana Cassone, Ahleiana Adnum-Waenga and Sean Holmes (Principal) [Cover] (School Captains) Alex Vasallo, Brock Craft, Quintessa, Chloe Groat and Sean Holmes (Principal) | Images: Luddenham Public School

When Quirky becomes Different
Do you have a child who is different? A quirky kid? He or she does things differently to other children? When does ‘quirky’ stop being an expression of the individual and an indication that some intervention is required? Those who could, would. So if children in general are able to draw at the age of four then your four year-old child should be able to draw, even if she isn’t that keen on it. If your 6 yearold child isn’t making friends when other 6 year-olds have fit in nicely and found a group of children he can relate to, then your child is experiencing some limitations in his social and emotional development. The labels don’t help – lazy, stubborn, aggressive, naughty, bad, stupid, a typical boy/girl, etc, – they get in the way of finding out what is really happening for your child. Is it a medical problem? A physical problem? A neurodevelopmental problem? I can’t tell you the number of times a parent has spoken in a parenting group about his/her child’s difficulties and the other parents have jumped in with solutions based on what they think the diagnosis could be. Or a well-meaning relative or friend has told a parent that she thinks her child has autism because she knows someone who has autism and they have tantrums just like that. Chances are your mother-in-law, friend, neighbour, or local shopkeeper is not qualified to make that call. NOTHING beats an assessment by a qualified professional. Start with a trip to your GP and keep asking questions until you are satisfied that your child is getting what they need. Quirky is absolutely fine, but if your child is limited in one or more areas of development (fine motor, gross motor, social, emotional, intellectual) it can lead to psychological or mental health problems later in childhood or during adolescence, and it’s often much easier to get help when a child is young rather than when the behaviours have become entrenched later.

The Year of the Wombat Warragamba Wombats JRLFC is set to kick off the 2021 season stronger than ever. The club is continuing to receive new registrations, thanks to the booming communities around Silverdale, Mulgoa, Bringelly, Wallacia, Greendale and Luddenham. They are community-driven and dedicated to grassroots rugby league. Their sport is for boys and girls aged 5-16 years and they are pleased to announce the development of an Under 16’s Girls League Tag Team for the 2021 season! Their Club President, Jayne Parsons would like to encourage local girls in particular to sign up. Jayne said, “Rugby league is a great sport for young girls to be involved in. It’s a very controlled and safe game. Girls can play tackle from the age of 5 until the age of 12, before changing over to league tag through to the age of 16”. Players at the Wombats this year will be treated to a growing team of expertise to guide players. Royce Simmons, former NRL rugby league player and coach, will be working with the Under 16’s boys. Helping oversee the development of their youngest and newest players is local and PDHPE Teacher, Yvette Lapa. “As a Mum of 6 and 7 year old boys, I understand how important it is for parents to know their child in both having fun and playing their favourite game safely. Rugby league gives young children the perfect outlet for all that energy and we are working to channel that into something healthy and positive at the Wombats” she said. Active Kids vouchers can be used for your child’s registration. Each player will receive training shorts and shirt included in the registration fee thanks to their sponsors. Register online today at www.playrugbyleague.com. For further information, please email Warragamba Wombats JRLFC President, Jayne Parsons at president.warragamba.jrl@ outlook.com.

Beautiful Cat with 3 Kittens! On 8th January 2021 we had a beautiful stray cat brought in that was pregnant. Unfortunately, she had no microchip. We informed the pound and the other veterinary hospitals in the area of the stray cat, but we could not find an owner. We could have sent her to the pound to be rehomed, but there are already too many cats at the pound, and being pregnant, we wanted to provide a safe environment for her and the soon to be kittens. She is such a nice smoochy cat, that loves attention, so she became one of our adoption cats. She gained 0.6kg in 3 weeks and her belly was growing every day. On 1st February 2021, she passed 1 dead kitten. We elected to perform a caesarian and desex her to ensure the other kittens had the best chance of survival. She now has 3 tiny little kittens to look after. They are so cute! Mum is doing well and she spends all day feeding the 3 kittens. Such a good mum! We will be posting updates on Facebook on the kittens each week. It will be so much fun to see how much they grow each week! The mum and the 3 kittens are available to purchase through our cat adoption program. They will be wormed every week and vaccinated at 8 weeks of age. The kittens will require a 2nd vaccination 3-4 weeks after the first vaccine, then due yearly. The kittens will be desexed before finding their forever home. Please call 02 4736 2027 to enquire about the mum and the kittens for adoption. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au. r Mum and kittens at 1 week of age | Image Supplied

New Customer Service Portal Launched for Wollondilly Residents Wollondilly residents can now manage and track their own customer service requests online thanks to a new customer service portal launched last month. This will mean requests are actioned quicker and residents will be updated in real time as Council acts on the request. Once logged in, customers can also see if issues in their area such as fallen trees or potholes have already been reported by other residents. The system will assist in making Council staff mindful of problems which are causing the most concern in the community, helping in the process of prioritising work programs. Requests can now be pinpointed on a map and include images and other comments to help Council resolve the problem. Mayor Robert Khan said, “Council is working hard to improve our customer experience every day and this is a great step forward for our residents. It gives our community members more control over how they enter requests and more specific information about the timing of work.” “While our Customer Service staff will always be available to take your calls and talk through your concerns during office hours, the Customer Portal offers a quick and easy way to get an answer about the status of your request any time of the day or night,” he said. The ‘Report an Issue’ function is just the first step in the development of Council’s new way of doing business. By June 2021, the customer portal will allow ratepayers to manage and pay their rates online. Staff are currently working on allowing customers to book council facilities directly through the system. Mayor Khan noted, “Ultimately customers will be able to manage and pay all financial transactions and access all council service through the portal.” “The year ahead will also see us developing new initiatives across Council to further improve the customer experience.” Head to https://portal.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au/ to check out the portal. r

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH MULGOA
Article Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga St Thomas’ Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: gpachurch.online | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am As I speak with people, one of the hardest things about the pandemic has been the mandatory mask wearing. While they are certainly needed during times like this, they aren’t normal. God made us for relationships with each other. Masks hide who we are. We can’t see a smile, we can’t see each other’s mouths as we speak and it is hard to recognise people. Masks just make relating with others so much harder. They often feel intrusive and uncomfortable. They have been important to ‘stop the spread’, but it’s so good when we don’t have to wear them. The truth is that God made us for relationships. It comes from the fact that God made us in his image. God’s character is to be completely loving and that has been the way from all eternity. However, it isn’t just that he made us for relationship with each other, he made us for relationship with him. Often it can feel that we hide from God, even ignore him. Despite this, he has loved us and wants us to have a relationship with him through Jesus. Every time I have had to put on a mask it has been a reminder to me that God made us for relationships with each other and him. This month, value the relationships you have with others and see how God made you for a relationship with him. WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor’s Corner
My brother is four years older than me, but we haven’t always been close, as there are so many situations where we have completely different perspectives. At times in the past, we may not have spoken to each, even over the course of a whole year. But over these last few years, where both of us have faced health challenges, the bond between us has grown and we have both enjoyed catching up with each other. It is so easy to ‘fall out’ with our family and friends, over what is often relatively insignificant differences. The Bible, God’s Word, provides us with guidance on this important subject. “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” (Colossians 3: 12 – 13). In practical terms how do I “clothe myself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience”? None of these are physical items, like a shirt or shoes, but each of them addresses my attitude towards other people. Now I expect that you may have people in your life who have hurt you or offended you in some way, either with their words or actions. It is so easy then for us to hit back at them, or alternatively you might decide to cut yourself off from further contact with them. But neither of these reactions reflect compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, or patience. Instead, we are encouraged to consciously consider each quality, as we deal with those hurt or offend. The verses speak into forgiveness, we are called to forgive others, just as the Lord has forgiven us. Offering forgiveness is not about who is right or wrong, it is about healing relationships. Forgiving is always difficult, especially if the person is not even sorry for their actions; but it brings a sense of peace; because we are called to forgive, knowing that God has forgiven us. My prayer for you is that you are challenged by these words, as you re-discover the power of forgiveness.

HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Could Your Back Issues be Bowel Issues? This article was inspired by a number of recent clients seen at the clinic with back pain that did not respond well to normal muscle elongation therapy. Although scans showed vertebral and discal issues, which may have been the source of these patients’ pain, client histories reported history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with conventional IBD medication. IBD includes two separate but similar diseases - ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. One could ask whether the patient’s back pain might be due to: 1. IBD related inflammation 2. Or more conventional vertebral/discal issues plus resultant nerve pain and muscle spasm? The short answer is, it could be one, the other, or both. In Australia 80,000 people live with IBD. Medically, ‘association between ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease’… with spinal-pain and ‘inflammatory back pain (IBP)’ is ‘well described’ and ‘seen in ~25% of people’ with IBD. Anatomically, the bowel is close to the lumbar vertebrae allowing bowel inflammatory-processes to “spill-over” into these neighbouring tissues. Since not all people with IBD have chronic back pain, any
back pain experienced by IBD patients might primarily be due to their specific combination of spinal-structural-issues, and/or any associated muscle spasms, inflammation and nerve-pain, with these symptoms originating from and being limited to the nerves, muscles and connective tissue of the lower back, plus any areas serviced by affected nerves (think sciatica). If this is the case 2-3 sessions of muscle elongation therapy should result in significant reduction in: 1. back pain and paraesthesias, 2. restriction of movement If IBD-related-inflammation is the major back-pain cause, treatment-progress will be minor and dietary change should be considered. A recent intervention study concluded that adopting the Mediterranean diet ‘was associated with spontaneous improvement of disease activity and inflammatory markers’ in both ‘Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis’. Once IBD related inflammatory processes subside, back-pain symptoms may reduce also, and non-IBD related symptoms may be more amenable to muscle elongation therapy. If you have IBD or related back pain, why not call us at the clinic to discuss dietary intervention.

Here we are into March already, as we wave goodbye to Summer and welcome Autumn. The warmer weather will slowly be replaced with cooler temperatures and the once lush foliage of our gardens and trees will change. As we start to adjust to the new normal, there is some promising news with vaccines for COVID-19 soon to be rolled out in Australia. Many of us have now returned to our offices as zoom meetings are replaced by face-to-face meetings. There is a strong sense of community and positivity everywhere you go as things begin to look up once again for us all. This month we meet some truly amazing people with stories about our local heroes. They are people who go above and beyond the call of duty, enriching our lives and communities. ‘Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show’. Enjoy Your Community News.
