Made to Relate As I write these words it’s mid-April. We’ve been in social isolation for something like 3 weeks (feels much longer) and I suspect we’d all agree this whole Covid thing, sucks. Easter, ANZAC Day, Birthdays, BBQ’s with friends and family, even just a walk in the park; a lot has changed thanks to Covid and not much of it for the better. Thank God for technology! Social Media, email, online church services, conference calls, the phone (who knew that was going to make a comeback); It’s wonderful that in a time when we can’t physically be with one another, we can still stay connected. I guess one thing that Covid and social distancing shows us is that, deep down, we all enjoy relating to other people. Maybe we prefer small groups, or only a select few, or maybe we like being in crowded rooms full of noise, but one way or another, relationships are a major part of life, and of enjoying life. I mean, I’m an introvert, and even I’m missing being out and
about, just bumping into people. We are made for relationship. Relationship with each other, and relationship with God. And unlike people right now, God doesn’t need to be kept at arm’s length. There is no social distancing necessary with God. In fact, because of Jesus Christ, no one ever has to be distant from God. Anyone can come to him, as the Bible says, “come near to God and he will come near to you” (James Chapter 4 Verse 8). God wants to be in a relationship with you, he wants to know you. He sent Jesus to prove it! So, if you’d like to think more about your relationship with God, I’m always happy to talk (phone and email below) and Church is a great place to get to know God better. In these Covid times church is all online, so feel free to join us on Sunday at 10 AM via Facebook or YouTube. (www.facebook.com/ glenmoreparkanglican/ or http://youtube.com/c/GPAChurch) And when this is all over, we’d love to meet you in person!

Pastor’s Corner We are in the middle of the pandemic, as Covid-19 envelops all the different forms of media, family, and community discussion. Changes are afoot - where people are losing their jobs, and some are faced with staying at home. There is panic buying and clubs, restaurants, sporting groups, movie theatres and some shops are closed. People gathering together is restricted, home-schooling is in vogue and church services have been cancelled. Self-isolation is for now our normal way of living. A few weeks ago, I was waiting at my local supermarket for a shipment to arrive of toilet paper, which I wanted for my daughter’s family. I was talking to several people (at a safe distance), none of whom I had met before. One such lady, was a real estate agent. As we talked, we found some common areas of interest, because I currently teach Property Students at TAFE; but more importantly, we shared a faith in Jesus Christ, as Lord and Saviour of our lives. Agreeing to catch up for a coffee together once the self-isolation was over, we exchanged
2 May 2020 www.mulgoagazette.com.au
contact details. The shipment was delayed to later that day, but I did not expect to be back at that time as I had another appointment. Later that night, the lady texted me, “I have the toilet paper for your daughter, it will be in our office to collect tomorrow”. Subsequently, I found out that she would have only been able to get one packet of four rolls, which she gave to me. How generous was she? Surely, it is not about the value of the item, nor is it the type of article, but it is the act of giving that has a value that cannot be measured. The Bible has this to say about giving, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9: 6 – 7). How might you, share generously with someone else? Keep safe and well, and my prayers are with you.
A Birthday with a Difference It is every 12-year-old boy’s dream to have a birthday party filled with their family and friends, food, games, and a day of fun. For local boy, Charles Powell, this year’s celebrations would be different, with his party cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, Charles’ parents Lisa and Vin Powell organised a Zoom party, where his family would surprise him online, via video conference from all
around the world. “Charles was pretty disappointed to have to cancel his party with all of his mates and cousins. We really wanted to do what we could to make it special for him, so we had a family Zoom party!” said Lisa Finn-Powell, Charles’ mother. With his siblings unable to fly up from Melbourne to join him, the family had a gift opening session on Zoom. Each member of the family had their own window, which saw Charles’ mother (Lisa) and father (Vin) as well as brother (Nick) and sister (Belle) in different rooms of the house. Older sister Grace and her boyfriend Pim were in their garden in Melbourne, along with older brother Will at his house. Charles’ Aunty Kari, who lives in North Carolina in the US, even popped in as a surprise visitor. “To open each present, Charles ran up and down the stairs and all over the house to where we were all sitting with our computers. The whole experience was a lot of fun. We also did a screen share of our birthday card to him, which said ‘You are getting a DOG!’. At that point, everyone went mad with excitement. It was unexpectant to all of the family” explained Lisa. Of course, no birthday is complete without a cake and this year Charles was treated to a Star Wars ™ themed chocolate cake, with R2D2. “It really was a wonderful birthday party in the end. The best surprise I could have asked for” said an excited Charles. r [Above] Charles’ family celebrating online | Image Supplied Luddenham Medical Centre

Support Knows NO Boundaries this Mothers Day Motherless Daughters Australia (MDA) is the only national not-for-profit organisation specialising in support after the loss of a mother, with focus on informing, representing, connecting, and supporting women and girls whose mothers have died. They help their community navigate the everyday and life’s major milestones without the support of their mum. With a network of around 4,000 in total and an online support group of more than 2,500 women, there is a real need for such support. The lead up to Mother’s Day in particular, is extremely challenging and given that we are even more isolated this year due to COVID19, MDA has a range of online initiatives to ensure its community feel continued support and connectedness. Motherless Daughters Awareness Week (May 3-9) is specifically in place a week before Mother’s Day to raise awareness that the organisation exists as a support network, and to help raise awareness and increase education within the wider community. During this week, women and children whose mums have died will be invited to participate in a social media initiative and record a 20 second video about how they will be honouring their mum this Mother’s Day. They can then upload it to their account, tag the organisation and use the hashtag #honouringher. The online support group which can be accessed via Facebook, is also a wonderful and comforting source of support, not only for Mother’s Day, but throughout the entire year. Women connect and listen, advise and empathise daily with nothing but love, understanding and compassion. Motherless Daughters also focuses on supporting the wider community and friends and family or motherless daughters to better support them in a more informed and insightful way. A factsheet that has been developed in consultation with their network, is available for download from their website. If you or someone else you know has lost their mum and may benefit from this organisation, please help raise awareness and let them know. To find out more, please head to their website www.motherlessdaughters.com.au. r Providing support to over 120 women in less than 4 weeks via video conferencing. MDA will continue connecting and providing virtual support ongoing | Image Supplied
Natasha’s Story “My mum, Eleonora Carbone, died on 6th June 2014 from metastatic uterine cancer. She was 69 and I was 33, my younger sister was 29. Mum was an active member of the local community for many years. She was kind, funny, caring and her love for us was unconditional” said local resident Natasha Lincoln. Natasha’s mum Eleonora met her now husband, but wasn’t around to see her get engaged, married or pregnant for the first time. “I will be forever devastated that my mum has not met my two beautiful boys and that she won’t meet baby number three due in September this year” she said. “My world is still not spinning around the same as it used to, but it is spinning again, just at a different pace and with different scenery. I can see the happiness in my children’s faces and the beautiful butterflies in the garden and I can hear the music again. Although time has passed, I still miss her every day. Love you mum. Happy Mother’s Day” ended Natasha.
Happy heavenly Mothers Day to my beautiful mum. I can’t visit this year but always thinking of you and missing you forever and a day. 20 years since heaven took you away. #RebeccaWoodward

#AnzacSpirit Not Lost in 2020 When Anzac Day services and memorials were cancelled this year, many Australians came together to collectively look at alternate ways in which we would still have a day of remembrance whilst practicing social distancing and being isolated from one another. A movement began and it was soon decided upon that we would each stand on our driveways at home at dawn and observe a minute’s silence. As we were unable to participate in a service, there were several ways in which we could commemorate Anzac Day 2020. RSL NSW suggested that you could record yourself reciting the ode or sharing a message on social media using the hashtag #ANZACSpirit. They also suggested that whilst listening to a streamed commemorative service, you could ‘light up the dawn’ by lighting a candle to remember those who fought for our country. Students who play instruments in school bands also participated in various musical projects across the country, which saw them perform ‘The Last Post’ at 6:00am on their driveways at home (after advising their neighbours of their plans on Anzac Day). Mateship plays a big part on Anzac Day, with many veterans, their families and friends coming together to spend time with one another in years gone by. Instead, this year it was replaced with phone and video calls, where checking up on a mate was more important than ever. How ever you chose to acknowledge Anzac Day this year, one thing was for certain. That was that Anzac Spirit is still very much alive in Australia, New Zealand and right around the world. Many kept sharing stories to show that the spirit of Anzac remains. Lest we forget. r Feature Article: Images: [Cover] https://www.rslnsw.org.au/ [Above] www. pixabay.com

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington
Like everywhere else in the world, Luddenham enters uncharted territory with the COVID-19 outbreak, and we hope you are all keeping safe and taking care. The Progress Hall and Showground have cancelled their meetings and all functions until further notice. April was a big month for our roads. First up, Gates Road is closed for about six weeks and entry is now through the roundabout near Littlefields Road. Adams Road has been closed to all thru traffic until August. This is to allow construction of a new intersection that will now have traffic lights, as Transport NSW decided not to build the promised bridge over Adams Road. Also, Transport NSW has opened the newly constructed Northern Road between Mersey Road and Eaton Road that diverts around the site of the Western Sydney International Airport. Now, one lane in each direction is open whilst they continue to finish work on the rest of the road, including the extra lanes in each direction. There are traffic changes coming from Penrith. Road users now need to turn right at the new traffic lights near the Luddenham shops and drive on the new road. Coming from Campbelltown, road users will need to follow the new road around the airport site and then turn left at the lights near the Luddenham shops to re-join the existing The Northern Road. The Planning of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis is continuing. During April, the Community Liaison Group held a tele meeting with The Hon. Rob Stokes MP, Minister for Planning and Public Spaces and the concerns from residents were conveyed to the Minister.
Work is continuing around the Western Sydney Airport site boundary, with temporary construction and permanent airport fencing installed along the new section of The Northern Road between Mersey Road and Eaton Road and Elizabeth Drive. This fencing will provide a delineation between the Western Sydney Airport site and the public. There is some news on the Elizabeth Drive upgrade project. They are now planning to realign Luddenham and Adams Roads’ intersection and install new traffic lights. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com.

Who Can Design Your Project? What to consider when designing your new home Planning Is Key To The Success Of Your Project I have been designing homes since 1975. There are many options and processes to be aware of when you decide to build a new home. Planning your design to meet your budget can be a very stressful period. I advise that during the design stage, all partners should be fully involved. Planning is the key to your project’s success and consulting with an accredited building designer or architect is the best place to start. They offer invaluable guidance in new home designs. If you are looking to upgrade, upsize or downsize your living arrangements, they can recommend options you might never have considered; potentially saving you lots of money, preventing delays in council, speeding up project completion and decreasing your stress level! There is a process all new home planners will have to go through. There are no shortcuts and once the home is built, there are no cheap ways to make changes later, so it is extremely important to get the new home planning right from the start. How are you all doing in the current conditions? What are you doing well? What are you struggling with? What could you do better? Where are the points of conflict in the family relationships? And why? • I am wondering if most conflict is caused by expectations that aren’t communicated well? We can become unstuck when we have really high expectations and low warmth and affection. There is no payoff for doing the right thing. I am seeing some families thriving. They are spending more quality time together where they are enjoying each other’s company. They get school work done in the morning which leaves the afternoons for play. They play board games. Kids are kept busy with simple activities in the home and outdoors. They are taking advantage of the activities offered on the internet and Facebook. The parents are reflecting on what is going well and what they could do differently. They are having family meetings to sort out any problems as they go along. Some families are loving not having the pressure of packing lunchboxes, getting out the door, getting in the door, getting dinner ready to make sure the kids are bathed and in bed to do it all again the next day. Everything is more fluid and parents are going with their children’s natural rhythms. They are doing the ‘we are in this together’ slogan in the home with a lot of fun and humour thrown in. “Though this is a scary time, it could very well be a time they remember as the best time in their life.â€? Going on a Bear Hunt With exercise restricted to half an hour a day away from the home during isolation, the option to explore is limited. That is, of course, if you are going on a bear hunt. That’s right – a Teddy Bear Hunt! A worldwide movement has begun, where families place a teddy bear somewhere visible in their home, where children and adults of all ages can see them passing by on their daily walks or runs. The teddy bear could be in the window of a bedroom, your car or just sitting in your front yard. There are no limits with how creative you can be with displaying your bear, with some members of the community using certain themes. It could be a bunny around Easter, a bear dressed as a soldier for Anzac Day or a mummy bear with her family for Mother’s Day. Once you’ve displayed your bear for all to see, you can choose to simply sit back and surprise passersby or to post photos online. Local groups right across social media have formed, where you can post a photo of your bear and your suburb. It’s important to note that when you are out on a teddy bear hunt and you see one, do not touch them! You can admire them from afar, but do not go near them, pick them up or move them. During the coronavirus pandemic, we all must practice social distancing and that also means from the bears as well. The next time you’re exercising - going for a walk, run or even as a passenger in the car, look out for the teddy bears. They are a reminder that we’re not alone and that we’re all in this together during these ever-changing times ahead.

Osteoarthritis (OA) - Is Excess Weight Really A Cause? What do we know? First, medicine considers OA ‘idiopathic i.e. ‘no specific cause’, different from trauma induced OA. Prevalence increases with age. Comorbidities are common - hypertension, obesity, diabetes, COPD, CAD, stroke, disorders heavily influenced by diet / life-style. Patients with previous hand OA have increased likelihood of knee and hip OA (independent of weight). Such facts support a systemic (diet/lifestyle) cause for idiopathic OA. Yet: 1. excess weight 2. repetitive squatting, heavy lifting are commonly listed OA causes. Consider the amount of weight carried by joints: ankle > knee > hip. This would suggest occurrence of OA should be lowest in hips, more frequent in knees, greatest in ankles. In line with this, hip OA makes up around 19% of cases, knee OA 41%, ankle OA just 4%, and weight doesn’t explain why 30% of cases involve hands. Research from Duke University shows when a joint carries more weight the body compensates for the increased load on cartilage by increasing a thing called cartilage ‘protein turnover’. The concept is actually quite simple. Protein turnover is the rate at which new fully functional proteins are synthesised to replace older worn-out proteins. The faster this occurs, the more new proteins you have, the stronger your cartilage. Protein turnover increases from hips to knees to ankles so each joint can handle its extra load. Given all of the above, it’s likely that OA develops along with (not because of ) obesity as a result of metabolic derangements due to poor diet lifestyle. But why the knees? Many studies don’t differentiate between trauma-OA (caused by previous injury) and idiopathic OA. Previous traumatic injuries increase the relative prevalence of OA in a joint and is one of the strongest risk factors for subsequent knee OA. The knee is unprotected by surrounding tissue, the most easily injured joint. So traumatic injury (not including simple wear & tear) contributes to the overall increased prevalence of all cause OA in knees. Differentiating non-traumatic OA is important because, without traumatic injury ‘idiopathic OA’ is ironically, much more likely to occur among sedentary individuals. So, eat right & exercise! Just be more careful not to get a major injury. r Image Supplied: https://journeytothenewyou.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2019/10/obesity-joint-pain.jpg

As the New Year rolled in for 2020, no-one I know ever thought for a minute that a short few months later we would be spending our days in lock down within our own 4 walls, with strict social distancing guidelines and businesses faced with shutdown or restricted trade. Yet, here we are. While for many it has been a very challenging time in more ways then one, we have witnessed the community step up and embrace the circumstances that we now find ourselves in, our ‘new-normal’ for period ‘unknown’. Refer to our #LifeInLockDown feature on pages 4 and 5 for a few of these highlights, from home-schooling to backyard camping, #AnzacSpirit and everything in between! For those following along at home, jump online and follow our Facebook pages where we’ll be interacting with the community on how you’re getting through these ‘changing and challenging’ times. You might just find yourself a part of next month’s printed feature! A reminder that the survival of small business depends on us! The message is simple: if you’re in a position to offer support, please do what you can. Small business needs us now more than ever. Enjoy Your Community News. “Reset, readjust, restart, refocus... as many times as you need to.”
