Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

There’s some very sad news to report, with Rocky (Lawrence Kevin) Roots passing away on the 29th September. Rocky was involved with the Show Society all his Life. He was an Honorary Life Member, Vice President and a hard-working Committee Member. He was previously involved with the Progress Association and was very much a local identity that will be sadly missed. Rocky’s Funeral was well attended in the Luddenham Uniting Church on Friday 11th October. R.I.P Rocky and thanks for all the good you did for Luddenham. The Stage 1 Plan of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis was exhibited from 21 August to 2 November 2018 and they received more than 600 submissions during this exhibition. The Western Sydney Planning Partnership finalised a ‘What We Heard’ Community Consultation Report, which reflects the exhibition of the Stage 1 Plan. The updated version of the LUIIP (Land Use and Infrastructure Implementation Plan) should be released in December and open for comments till the end of February 2020. They say the final LUIIP will provide a greater level of detail, drawing on the work being undertaken across governments. The final LUIIP will identify precinct boundaries, precinct staging, the vision and strategic objectives of each precinct, biodiversity conservation areas and recommendations for the Agriculture and Agribusiness Precinct. The Western Sydney Planning Partnership is responsible for delivering the Final Plan and Precinct Plans. In other words, the future of Luddenham.

Luddenham Progress Association has been working with Penrith City Council regarding upgrading Sales Park. An information session was held at the park and you can still have your say by visiting www.yoursaypenrith.com.au/salespark. They are looking for new play equipment, playground surface upgrades, new seating, new landscaping, new planting and shade options, pathways and, if enough people are interested, some exercise equipment. The RMS is proposing to build the M12 Motorway, a new 16-kilometre motorway between the M7 Motorway at Cecil Hills and The Northern Road at Luddenham. The motorway would connect the Western Sydney International Airport at Badgerys Creek to Sydney’s motorway network and is expected to be opened to traffic in 2025, before the new airport opens. Motorway construction is proposed to start in 2022. The M12 Motorway Environmental Impact Statement exhibition period is on now. All the details are at https://v2.communityanalytics. com.au/rms/m12. Upcoming Information sessions to discuss the EIS will be held at the following times: • Saturday 2 November – 10am to 1pm at Kemps Creek Sporting and Bowling Club, 1490 Elizabeth Drive, Kemps Creek • Thursday, 7 November – 5pm to 8pm at Holy Family Primary School, Luddenham Also, during October, part of a movie was filmed at the Church of England in Luddenham. The movie’s working title is Colours of Shade. More details to follow. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com. v The late and much loved, Rock Roots. | Image Supplied

Ladies & Mens Hairdressing This month, on Monday the 11th of November is Remembrance Day. There will be a Remembrance Day memorial service held at the Warragamba Memorial Park at 10:45am and everyone is welcome. Rose Carleo will be singing the Australian national anthem at the service. After the service, everyone is invited back to the Warragamba Workers Club for light refreshments. The Warragamba ANZAC Committee are currently planning their next project to raise funds to purchase other war memorabilia. Last year saw the group unveil the six-foot bronze statue of the lone soldier, that now proudly adorns Warragamba Memorial Park. The Committee have also asked that the local community are vigilant in keeping the Memorial Park safe, as items on the bronze statue have recently been removed. “Each year, we have this service to pay our respects to all the fallen men and women we have lost at war. Without their sacrifice, we would not live in this beautiful country” said Hellen Dillon, member of the Warragamba ANZAC Committee to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. For more information about the Remembrance Day memorial service, search ‘Warragamba ANZAC Committee’ on Facebook or email them at warragambaanzaccommittee@gmail.com.

FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Celebrate Jesus Mum! Dad! The batteries are flat! The game is broken! There’s no more chocolate! Ever noticed at Christmas how it doesn’t take long for something to break or run out? The special toy we took days to find has broken. A key part has fallen off never to be seen again. There are gifts we tire of or never use which are quietly retired to the cupboard. Is there a gift that lasts or that does not wear out; one we can always use? One of the best known, most loved verses of the Bible speaks to this. In John’s Gospel, Jesus says these wonderful words; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This life changing truth brings real, sure, confident hope. God, the creator of all things, loved people so much that he sent his unique, precious, one and only Son, Jesus, into our world to die for us, so when we turn to him in faith and trust, committing our lives to him, humbly depending on him for direction in life, we will not perish but have life, real life going on for all eternity! What a gift! Jesus does not wear out. He does not let us down or pass a “use by date.” He does not become irrelevant, but he fills us with peace, hope and joy. Christmas is a celebration that our loving God sent Jesus so we could have this free gift of eternal life. When you’re thinking about Christmas gifts, it doesn’t get much better! Jesus invites you to join him in a celebration that will go on for all eternity. It would be tragic if in the busyness of Christmas, shopping, dinners, parties, even the sadness of remembering happier times, if you said “no” to this wonderful invitation. Don’t let Christmas go by without saying “yes!” to Jesus, accepting his invitation and putting your faith and trust in him. At Mulgoa Anglican Church, Christmas starts with our Gingerbread Extravaganzas (details below) – we’d love to see you!

Luddenham Pioneers Acknowledged Luddenham Uniting Church has just celebrated its 133rd anniversary. The cemetery at the Church dates back even earlier than this. One aspect of the Church’s cemetery, which has concerned some of the members, is that there are a number of burial plots known to be unmarked graves. These are mainly graves from the 1800’s. Along with its over-arching mission to proclaim the Gospel, the Church Council is keen to value and preserve the local area’s heritage and to foster community development. So, it has been a significant donor to local needy causes and is planning various projects for the new year. Because of this commitment to the local area, the Church recently decided to place a memorial in the cemetery which acknowledges past Luddenham people who have been buried there, but whose graves are not now marked and there is no documentary record to identify the occupants. Styles of memorials appropriate for this purpose were researched, and a large but simple, rough and undecorated piece of sandstone was decided upon. The monument has now been completed and will be dedicated by Pastor Bob Searle at 10:30am on Sunday 24th November in the Church cemetery, located at The Northern Road in Luddenham. All members of the community, especially those with connections to the cemetery, are welcome to attend. Several people deserve acknowledgement for their contribution towards the memorial. This includes Hi-Quality Quarry (Kevin Weatherstone, Manager) who donated the sandstone and delivered it to the cemetery, Stuart Lewis (stonemason) who selected a suitable sandstone boulder from the quarry and fixed two brass plaques into place, Harry Bowen who dug the hole in which the rock sits, Alex Belay who used his equipment to move the stone into position, Rob Sinclair who assisted in positioning the stone and then finishing off the surrounds and Pat Sinclair who provided advice and assistance throughout the project. r Luddenham Uniting Church [Inset] The unmarked grave memorial | Images/Article: David Hilder

WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor’s Corner

A week ago, I was attending a service at another church where a young girl of 12 or 13 was being baptised. This is different to infant baptism, where parents make commitments to bring up their children to know God; rather it is a person making their personal commitment to know and follow Jesus, as the Lord of their life. This young girl shared, how as a primary school child, she had been bullied. In order to escape the hurtful taunts, she decided to lose weight, hoping that she would then be accepted by her peers. During this time, she felt that God had abandoned her. Over a period of time, she practically stopped eating. This led to her severe health issues and she was suffering from anorexia. She was hospitalised and, over time, she gained some weight and her health improved. Despite her newfound health, happiness and acceptance by others remained elusive. She reached a point in her young life that she no longer wanted to go on. So, one afternoon she took an overdose of pills, seeking to find a way out from her suffering. Her loving and supportive parents thought that she must be coming down with a virus. The young girl said that she felt so ashamed, telling her Mum what she had done. An ambulance was called, the young girl survived, and she is healthy today. The young girl restored her relationship with God. She came to a realisation that Jesus was always with her and had never left her side. But of course, Jesus doesn’t overrule our actions and we are free to live the life as we choose. Our self-worth is not tied up with how we look physically, yet our society overemphasises this, particularly in the minds of young people. The Bible records that Samuel was charged by God to select a new King, The Lord said to Samuel, “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7). My prayer is that we will not judge people by how they look, but rather we will value who they are. God bless.

Local Band with Big Hearts Local rock band The Jestas recently performed at Silverdale Shopping Centre, entertaining the community with a live performance, whilst raising funds for the Rural Fire Service. Despite the late passing storm, the talented teenage band continued with their performance and raised $562.20 for Silverdale RFS from passers-by, shop staff and diehard Jestas fans for the gold coin concert. “It was a free performance for everybody to enjoy, so the band thought why not help raise some money. Small events like this are important to local communities as they remind people that these charities and volunteer services are out there and really do need support” said Anthony Gerhard, band representative of The Jestas. The Jestas are made up of four members which are Ben Wilson on rhythm guitar, Caitlyn Kitchin on drums/vocals, Jesse Gerhard on lead guitar/vocals and Rafaela Safadi on bass guitar/vocals. The band presented the valuable donation to Silverdale RFS at their monthly meeting on Monday 14th October. “I’m sure this won’t be the last fundraiser The Jestas organise. They had so much fun, added to the buzz of helping a good cause. These kids would do this every weekend if they could” smiled Anthony. On the 24th November, The Jestas will be donating their time in a 3-hour performance at the Wallacia Hotel for The Bikers Hand, who are a riders charity group dedicated to helping all in need. Boa Constrictor Skin Shed Found The skin shed from an adult boa constrictor was found by a contractor at a property under construction in Silverdale in Western Sydney on 9 October 2019. Boa constrictors are prohibited in NSW outside of zoos. They are a serious threat to wildlife and can be dangerous to humans. They can also carry exotic disease which impact native animal populations. Local residents have been encouraged via a letter and brochure to report any sightings to the NSW Department of Primary Industries. Biosecurity Officers from Greater Sydney Local Land Services are currently working to locate and capture the animal. Once located, a licensed snake catcher will be contracted to catch the snake and transport it to a specialist veterinarian. The snake will be examined to determine where it came from, how long it has been in the area, what it has been eating, whether it’s carrying any diseases of concern and whether it has produced offspring. If people become aware of unusual animals in the wrong place or suspect illegal activities such as breeding or selling of non-native animals, they are encouraged to make a report to DPI as soon as possible. Reports can be made using the online form at www.dpi.nsw. gov.au/biosecurity/sighting, by phoning the Animal and Plant Inquiry line on 1800 680244 or emailing invasive.species@dpi. nsw.gov.au.

New School Year Worries As the school year draws to a close next month, anxiety about the following year can start to kick in for some children and parents. Which teacher? Who’s class? Which friends? The uncertainty and fear of the unknown can be overwhelming and therefore the school holidays over Christmas can be quite uncomfortable for some. Some might say that it is ‘tough luck’; this is just a part of life and kids need to learn to adapt to change. Whilst this is correct in some respects, children (especially those with additional needs such as anxiety disorders and Autism) still need support through this time and guidance in managing their feelings. From a schooling perspective, children should be given the opportunity to visit the area of the school they will be in, become familiar with the staff on that grade and be kept with at least one friend moving forward. This is obviously in an ideal world and it is noted that whilst these practises are attempted at most schools to some degree, it is not guaranteed, and changes may occur. Due to the unpredictable nature of staffing, especially in schools with fluctuation of numbers, last minute change can be unavoidable. It is for this reason that parental support around change is paramount. As parents, you can have discussions around feelings and different scenarios. Validate your child’s feelings but be mindful that you do not create more anxiety; be guided by your child’s responses and assure them that whatever happens, the school and you care about them being safe and happy at school and you will work together to ensure that they feel that way. If your child exhibits strong feelings of worry, it could also be beneficial to chat to the School Counsellor or Stage Coordinator/ Assistant Principal about your child’s transition. r Anxiety about new year can start as this year comes to an end | Image: www.pexels.com. Protecting our Pets! Silverdale resident Karen Bedford has a passion for animals. So much so, that her local group ‘Lost and Found Pets Warradale and Mulgoa Valley’ has assisted in helping to reunite over 200 lost pets with their owners over the years. The group was established in 2015 and has over 1,400 members who all collectively help when a pet has been lost or found in the area. Each week, Karen volunteers her time to help the group with scanning lost animals and returning them to their owners, scanning deceased animals, checking of microchip details and assisting with aggressive dog reports. “What I enjoy the most about being a part of the group is the satisfaction of reuniting animals with their owners” explained Karen. “If you would like to get involved with the group, you can do so by ‘liking’ the Facebook page and sharing the posts on your timeline on social media” she said. Mulgoa resident Josh Anderson, currently third in the Aussie Racing Car Championship, raced in this year’s SuperUte Series at Bathurst for the first-time last month. “Getting to race at Bathurst as part of the Bathurst 1000 weekend is something I’ve been dreaming about my whole life” Anderson said. “It’s a dream come true”. The iconic Bathurst track is known for being challenging and Anderson came into the event with some trepidation being well aware of how difficult the circuit is. “Not only is racing at Bathurst somewhat daunting, it was also in a Toyota Hilux Ute, which is a car that I don’t usually race in”. “But, over the weekend I gradually built my confidence on the track by taking it slowly and building up to it”. Anderson qualified fifth, an excellent result on his first effort at the circuit. The first race certainly threw Anderson in at the deep end with challenging wet conditions, but he performed well holding on to his starting position. Race two saw Anderson improve his finishing position working his way into fourth place by the chequered flag. After some intense battles amongst the top cars in race three, Anderson ended up in fifth position, giving him equal fourth on points for his SuperUte and Bathurst debut. “It was a fantastic experience to race on one of the most famous tracks in the world” Anderson said. “Thanks to Sieders Racing for the opportunity to have such a great weekend”. Back in the Aussie Racing Car for his next race, Anderson is still contemplating what his next goal is, but he knows he’ll definitely be racing into the new year. KOBHI'S KITCHEN

Hi everyone! My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen. Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook. P.S I hope you enjoy making this. Kobhi

Ko's Cottage Pie

Ingredients

550gm Beef Mince 1 Onion - Diced 1 Cup Frozen Mixed Veggies 1 440g can Tomato Soup 1 440g Can Diced or Crushed Tomatoes 1 Tbs Tomato Paste 1 Cup Beef Stock 4 Medium Potatoes 1 Tbs Butter 100ml Milk Salt + Pepper to taste Method

1. Ask your adult helper to turn the oven on at 180 degrees or 150 degrees (fan forced). 2. Your adult helper needs to cook the mince and the onion in the frypan, until brown. 3. Add the frozen veggies now (my brother doesn't like these, but he just picks them out). 4. Add the tomato soup, diced tomatoes and beef stock. With your adult helper, cook on a low heat until it thickens and is not too saucy! 5. Let the mince mixture sit to cool. 6. The next step for your helper is to peel and dice the potatoes and boil them in a pot until soft. 7. Drain the water from the potatoes, add the butter and milk, mash them until smooth. 8. Grease a small oven proof tray; add the mince mixture and top with the potato mixture. 9. Ask your adult helper to place the dish in the oven for 35 minutes or until brown on top. 10. Ready to serve.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a rare lung disease in which the tissue around the air sacs within the lungs become thickened and scarred. This scarring makes the lungs stiff which makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. This slows the efficient delivery of oxygen into the bloodstream where it is needed to be transported to the rest of the body. Planning Your Building Project In Australia, we must comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA 2014) and the Australian Standards Codes (AS). Most new homes are designed with ‘the family’ in mind, and 4 bedrooms are now the norm. The master bedroom has an ensuite with shower, vanity and toilet, a walk-in robe and sometimes a parent’s retreat area. Today’s bathrooms are bigger in size and more elaborate in layout and design. Double showers (size), spa baths, long vanities and toilets are occasionally incorporated into the bathroom design or designed as a totally separate unit. Kitchens are designed around the family area. They are now part of the family room area, where the family spends most of their time together. The entire kitchen now has stainless steel kitchen appliances from dishwashers to double door fridges. Formal living room and dining rooms are no longer an important part of the family needs. However, an eating area and TV/entertainment room is now part of the ‘new’ design of today’s home. Offices and study/PC rooms are becoming an important part of the new home layout design. Most new homes now have outdoor eating facilities and BBQ entertainment areas called the ‘alfresco’ area. Thirty years ago, the Australian Federation style of home was seen everywhere. Some new suburbs became Federation suburbs, with this style of design similar in most streets. An example of this is the first and second land release in Glenmore Park.

Locals Compete at NSWVGA State Medal The Western Sydney Region Veteran Golfers Association (WSRVGA) sent four representatives to Port Macquarie last month, to compete in the inaugural NSWVGA State Medal. The leading golfers from all active groups/regions were invited to send their leading male and female players to compete in the prestigious event. The WSRVGA is Group 20 and its representatives were brothers Peter Cromer (Wallacia CC) and Steve Cromer (Leonay GC), along with Sue Evers (Springwood CC) and Carol Carter (Richmond GC). Evers would carry all before her in the Ladies Division, finishing at the top of the leaderboard on both days and taking out the Medal with a 7-shot margin on the field. With players restricted to receiving just one major prize in the event, Carter would claim victory on Day Two and sixth overall. In the Men's division, Peter Cromer played solidly on both days to secure overall third spot, whilst brother Steve finished out of the placings. r Peter Cromer (Wallacia CC) and Steve Cromer (Leonay GC) | Image: Carol Cromer. HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Exercise May Help Overcome Your Bad Genes and Age-Related Decline My August article hinted that your genes don’t determine the person you become. Diet and exercise, have huge positive influences even if you have poor genetics. Let’s illustrate this. ‘mtDNA-mutator’ mice have ‘really bad’ genes. They accumulate 3-5 times as many mitochondrial DNA mutations as wild type mice in equivalent time. This leads to: • mitochondrial dysfunction (in biogenesis & fission), • excessive free radical production • oxidative stress & damage to cells • accelerated body cell death rates • loss of cell reserve (aging). This loss of cell reserve (fewer properly-working body cells) leads these mice to suffer from ‘progeria’, a disorder with profound premature aging and early death. Like old people these mice have reduced fertility, muscle loss (sarcopenia) and subcutaneous fat loss, hair loss, curved spines, osteoporosis, anaemia, heart enlargement, and they get all these things very early in life. Key is that their mitochondria malfunction first, well before the appearance of the actual signs of aging. Can anything delay this onset of mitochondrial changes and thus aging? Experiments by Safdar etal in 2011 using mtDNA-mutator’

22 November 2019 www.mulgoagazette.com.au

mice, demonstrated how regular endurance exercise can help even these genetically challenged mice. They showed ‘that 5 months of endurance exercise induced systemic mitochondrial biogenesis, prevented mitochondrial DNA deletions and mutations, increased mitochondrial energy production capacity, restored mitochondrial structure, and blunted pathological levels of’ cell death ‘in multiple tissues of the mtDNA mutator mice. All this conferred complete protection from progeria, ‘multisystem pathology, and prevented premature mortality in these mice’. In short, the regular endurance exercise was able to overcome the severe genetic defects that these mice had. The authors concluded that, ‘the systemic mitochondrial rejuvenation through endurance exercise promises to be an effective therapeutic approach to mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction in aging and related comorbidities’ (i.e. diseases). Most of us will not have to overcome such severe genetic defects. For many of us, our lack of exercise will be the key contributor to the mitochondrial dysfunction that occurs in our tissues well before we see our outer signs of aging, including muscle loss. While, appropriate regular endurance exercise may be a key preventer of our age-related decline, and quicken response to therapy.
