The Heart and Soul of Mulgoa The local community have bid farewell to Mulgoa Pharmacy’s Brian Mitchell, who left the business on 27th of September, after almost 18 years, closing a memorable chapter in his life. Brian first started at Mulgoa Pharmacy in December 2001, when he worked with John Debeck, the original owner. He took over the pharmacy in February the following year and was initially joined by his wife Marilyn, who had left the corporate world to become an integral part of Mulgoa Pharmacy. Soon after, Amanda and then Deanne, made the team complete. “The most enjoyment my wife and I have experienced is working with the local community. Getting to know our customers and their children on both a professional level and, in many cases, on a personal level as well. We take great pleasure having helped the children whose parents we helped many years earlier” said Brian to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. “The main thing we will miss is our rapport with our customers and trying to help whenever we were able. Our loyal customers were like an extended part of the family. We always tried to make work enjoyable, having a laugh and a joke where possible. We made Mulgoa Pharmacy a happy place to visit, even if it was just for a talk and many jokes” he explained. In their tenure as owners, they saw major changes in both their customer base and the local area topography. They noticed more families moving into the area to bring up their children in the beautiful, semi-rural precinct. Undoubtedly, the next major change will be the Badgery’s Creek airport development, which has set the tone for big changes in the whole Nepean Valley. For now, their plans for the future are not set in concrete, but they certainly hope to travel, catch up and spend quality time with their children and grandchildren. “We will always cherish our time and good memories at Mulgoa Pharmacy. Now that we have handed the baton to Phil and Luana, the new owners, we hope that with Amy, Deanne and Kathy that business will continue as usual” Brian ended. On behalf of the community, the Mulgoa Valley Gazette would like to thank Brian and Marilyn for their wonderful years of service and wish Phillip and Luana the best of luck with the pharmacy. r (L-R) Phillip Doueihi (Pharmacist and new owner), Kathy Conliffe (Pharmacy Assistant), Amy Wilson (Pharmacist in Charge), Brian Mitchell (Pharmacist and previous owner) and Deanne Hughes (Pharmacy Assistant) | Image Supplied Luddenham Medical Centre

Pastor’s Corner
Recently, my wife Barbara and I were on holidays in Darwin. Darwin was a place that was very significant to Barbara because her father was serving in the army in Darwin, when the Japanese bombed in February 1942. In the initial attack, four Japanese aircraft carriers launched 188 aircraft, with the mission to attack shipping and port facilities in Darwin harbour. Three warships and six merchant ships were sunk and another ten were damaged. Several labourers on the wharf were killed and there was damage to some of the town’s buildings. These raids continued for many months afterwards. Visiting the sites around Darwin and hearing the stories was important to both of us. Whilst in Darwin City, we were walking past a church which had a large ship’s propeller in the grounds from a New Zealand ship that was sunk during the Japanese raid. Inside the church, we read that after the war there was a tender put out for salvage companies to clear the harbour of sunken ships. Only one company applied, and it was a Japanese company. From the salvaged remains, the Japanese company made seventy-seven crosses, which were now placed throughout that church, on both ends of every pew and in other places. Why seventy-seven crosses? The reason was inscribed on the wall in the foyer. It quoted the scriptures Matthew 18:21-22: “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times”. It is often hard to forgive people who have hurt us, especially so when they are not sorry for what they have done. Yet, Jesus forgives us over and over again, far more times than seventy-seven. As we forgive others, we no longer carry the burden of what they have done to us. This is irrespective of whether they are sorry, and we are set free from carrying that grievance. My prayer is that all of us will learn the power of forgiveness that sets us free. FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Songs of Encouragement
It is natural to be saddened by bad news. Perhaps it could be news about serious illness or the loss of our job, a relationship breakdown, or even death itself. Yet, is it possible to stand firm in the face of this news? Look at these strengthening, encouraging words from the Bible’s book of Psalms. In Psalm 16, the writer, David, facing great uncertainty, is able to say; “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing...I shall not be shaken...my heart is glad; my body...will rest secure because you will not abandon me to the grave...you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.’” Despite the uncertain circumstances in his life, David, because he knows that apart from God, he has nothing of eternal value, he will not be shaken. In fact, David is able to experience peace and calm. He has a quiet inner joy, the confident joy of knowing that no matter what happens, God will never abandon him. Even in death, God will be with David because God will take him to be at home with him where David will experience eternal joy in God’s presence. Sometimes we can be so weighed down by disappointment that we might feel as if all hope is gone. On Sundays at Mulgoa Anglican Church in October we will be spending some time looking at the Psalms. We will see that the Psalms are not just words on a page, but in fact they are important truths which you can live by, truths, so that as tough times come, you can stand firm. Throughout history, Christian people have found great inner strength and comfort in the Psalms. They have experienced God’s promise of knowing a quite joy, a confidence and peace as they set God and his Son Jesus as the Lord of their life. We’d love you to be able to join us and experience this encouragement, strength and comfort for yourself.

“This 1970 Datsun 240Z is a very much sort after 240Z, being car number 259 in the first production run and a matching engine numbers 240Z with its original 2.4 litre engine and 5 speed manual gearbox” said John Wakeling a local Sydney car enthusiast and member of the Z Car Club Sydney. Launched on October the 22nd 1969 in the USA, only 319 240Zs came to Australia in 1970. This makes the 240Z a very rare beast indeed, compared to Holden’s and Fords. The Datsun 240Z was faster, quieter, and less expensive and had better brakes and handling and virtually destroyed the market for British sports cars in the USA. It also proved to be a very tough competition car on and off road. Today it’s a cult car, idolised by many as it’s the timeless classic sports car that’s easy to live with and yet ticks all the boxes in terms of performance, great shape, rarity and fantastic sounding 6-cylinder engine. It’s a true classic sports car to fully enjoy! Come to Damfest and see one of the largest gatherings of 240Z and Z cars celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Z car. John will have both his 240Z’s on display. Coined Zedfest, you will need to register to assure your Z car has a spot in the display. The Z Car Club Sydney will be running its show and shine, so you’ll see some of the best Z cars at Damfest Warragamba on the 20th October. Local School Part of History Luddenham Public School have formed a strong connection with the Western Sydney Airport Community Engagement Team. The Community Engagement team visited the school earlier this term to talk to the students about being safe around a construction site and made paper planes to land on a runway. The Principal, Karen Ellis, was invited to attend the first tour of the Western Sydney Airport site with other local members to increase community awareness of the new project. The school captains were also invited to assist with the official opening of the Education Experience Centre at the Western Sydney Airport on Monday 2nd September, alongside the school leaders from Bringelly Public School, Kemps Creek Public School and Holy Family Catholic School. Bella and Chloe had the great honour in meeting Prime Minister Scott Morrison and received a special Western Sydney Airport pin. Both students were part of history on that day and will have this memory to share with family and friends forever. r Luddenham Public School students Chloe (L) and Bella (R) | Image: Luddenham Public School

Western Sydney Airport has awarded a contract to carry out major earthworks to a joint venture between Lend Lease and CPB Contractors on the 1st of September. Work under the contract will begin in early 2020 and is set to create hundreds of jobs across the 1780-hectare site. Western Sydney Airport CEO Graham Millett said that at least 30 percent of jobs during the construction phase will go to Western Sydney locals, with that figure increasing to 50 percent when the Airport opens. In addition, 20 percent of jobs must go to apprentices, trainees and other learning workers. On the 2nd September, Luddenham had its biggest ever group of political leaders including Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack MP, Senator Mathias Cormann, Alan Tudge MP, Angus Taylor MP, Melissa McIntosh MP, and Stuart Ayres MP for the opening of the Western Sydney Airport Experience Centre here in Luddenham. Students from local schools participated - including Chloe and Bella from Luddenham Public School who helped with the first official raising of the Australian, NSW and Aboriginal flags. Western Sydney Airport Experience Centre is designed in conjunction with the local landscape. The Centre will guide visitors through an exhibition space before opening to a viewing area where they will be able to see airport construction underway. The viewing area is also equipped with augmented reality, allowing visitors to view how the terminal and runway will look and where they will be positioned. The Centre will feature interactive digital videos including the history of the region, the importance of the airport to Western Sydney and the massive economic benefits. Currently the Western Sydney Airport Experience Centre is open Monday to Thursday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Hopefully they will be extended soon. Also, on the site in Eaton Road, Western Sydney Airport Co has also built office space for 100 workers that will now work out of Luddenham as work on the Airport increases. Luddenham lost another house (Sunnyside) as the new Northern Road alignment is now evident. This once belonged to the Roots Family and another part of our history is now gone. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com. r Local Schools at WSA Experience opening. | Image Supplied

and truck enthusiasts to showcase their vehicles in a safe and family friendly environment. Proceeds of the day go back into the community. The community of Warragamba is the legacy of a pre-World War II project designed to provide water to the burgeoning greater Sydney Metropolitan area. The “temporary” township was built to house the thousands of skilled and unskilled workers who were gathered together from across the globe to create the largest concrete structure of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere at the time. It survives today with a solid background of those original Dam builders and the truly unique community spirit that evolved from the 37 different nationalities that arrived here to start a new life. They came as individuals and they came as families and they came for a better life. They became a living entity with friends and family intertwined in perpetuity. After the devastating 2001 Christmas Day Bushfires, Warragamba worked hard to rebuild itself. In 2005, the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre created a community event to bring people back together. This event later came to be known as Damfest and has grown to entertain as many as 15,000 people at an individual event. As always, they would like to give a huge thank you to all their sponsors including WaterNSW, Allam Property Group and Wollondilly Council. It’s only with the support of their sponsors that they can make this amazing event happen each year. For more information about Damfest, call Lee on 4774 1273 or email community@wsnc.org.au. PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Developing a Positive Relationship with your Child Phil Nunn, an Australian psychologist, says that parenting is like having a rope around your waist. Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in. I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child. No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids can look angry or overly independent. Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. Having a relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent. I reckon that building a relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on the relationship instead, and see how that changes things. So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child? Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders. Things like put-downs, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship killers. Dr Robyn Dolby also uses the rope metaphor to explain how parents relate to their children. She says that if your child is used to being out on the end of the rope most of the time, then you need to reel the rope IN very slowly. The same can be said for children who have been kept too close and too controlled (over protected) or kids who experience anxiety. You need to let the rope OUT very slowly, so they don’t get scared. Relationship. It is essential to growing strong, resilient, healthy, and happy humans.

Moonlight MARKET
FRIDAY 25TH OCTOBER | 6–9PM Mulgoa Public School – Mulgoa Road PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
GLENMORE PARK | PENRITH
Dr Jason Lau (02) 4733 2956 Platinum Sponsor
Mulgoa Public School has hosted some great market days in the past and after a few years break, they are excited to share a twilight market with the community this year. Proudly sponsored by Glenmore Park Dental and Bespoke Realty Group, this event is the first of its kind for Mulgoa Public School. Mulgoa’s Moonlight Market is proudly presented and organised by the school’s P&C. The market is the schools major fundraising event for 2019. The P&C are hoping to raise funds to further develop the schools outdoor learning area and update the resources under their brand new Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA). The school promises a fantastic evening, with a selection of food, drinks, market stalls, and entertainment on offer throughout the night. Mulgoa Public School’s P&C committee will be putting on a fantastic barbeque and cake stall, offering the best sausage sandwiches and a smorgasbord of sweet treats to tempt the taste buds. Over 40 artisan vendors have been carefully curated and selected by the P&C market committee to create a unique shopping experience for the night, all whilst being serenaded by talented local musicians and singers. Kids, big and small, get excited as there may just be a visit from the Rural Fire Brigade and the historical police department. Plans are being finalised so visitors can also take the opportunity to inspect historical police cars and a rural fire truck that will be on display. Mulgoa’s Moonlight Market will be held at Mulgoa Public School, located on Mulgoa Road in Mulgoa on Friday 25th October from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Planning Your Building Project The choice of style for the design of your new home is an individual issue that all partners will have to agree on. We humans came a long way from our first shelter (the cave), to where we are today, sometimes called the concrete jungle. In many cases, there is no difference when we used to live in a sheltered cave to where we live today. We all need a roof over our heads, like in the cave days, and we still have these same needs today. When designing a home, the first thing we want is to establish a plan or layout plan of all the required rooms we need. The type of rooms and the dimensions of each room will determine the size of the home. The size of a home is calculated in square metres (m2). A square metre is the length times the width of a room or home - eg: 6.0 metre long room multiplied by 4.50 metre wide room is a 2.7 square metre room. Builder’s quotations are based on the total square metres of the house (or additions/extensions) multiplied by the square metre cost. A new home in brick-veneer is charged by a builder on average between $1,850 to $2,000 a square metre (including plumbing, electrical, pc items etc.) This is not including drainage or other site costs like goods and services tax. So, a new home of 200 square metres estimated cost will be between $350,000 to $400,000, plus site costs and GST to build. The style of a new home is the preference of choice of the home buyer. We as architects/ building designers, can provide the design of space that a family or person needs to feel comfortable and safe with within the walls of the home. There are certain rules regarding the design of a home. The home must be safe to live in, structurally sound and comply with regulations and standards. This bushfire season could be one of the worse in years, so it’s important that your Bushfire Survival Plan is up to date and that everyone in your family knows what the plan is should a bushfire threaten your home. Having a Bushfire Survival Plan and preparing your home is your responsibility. Because, the reality is that on some days there will not be enough fire trucks for every house. You can go to myfireplan.com.au to help you with your Bushfire Survival Plan and visit rfs.nsw.gov.au if you are looking for information on preparing your home. It’s also important that everyone knows what is happening around them, regarding bushfires. You can do this by downloading the ‘Fires Near Me’ app on your smart phone. The current drought conditions across the state have seen a busy start to the 2019/20 bushfire season and several fires have been difficult to contain due to these dry conditions. Some volunteer firefighters have experienced this firsthand with both Wallacia and Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade’s having members assisting at the Long Gully Fire, near Tenterfield in midSeptember. Those members worked over three days protecting life, property and other assets in challenging conditions. Unfortunately, a number of homes and other assets were lost at this fire. “With no significant rain, higher than average temperatures forecast for Summer and the already dry conditions, it’s more important than ever to remember that it is your responsibility to prepare yourself, your home and your family” said Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade Captain Jody Preston. r Volunteer firefighters from Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade at the Long Gully Fire near Tenterfield | Image/Article: Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade

KOBHI'S KITCHEN
Hi everyone! My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen. Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook. P.S I hope you enjoy making this. Kobhi
Wollondilly Council makes Submission to Dam Wall Raising Inquiry
Cookies & Cream Ice Cream
Ingredients
600ml of cream One can of condensed milk One teaspoon of vanilla essence Five chocolate cookies Method
1. Your adult helper needs to beat the cream with a mixer until it starts to get thick (Mum calls that thicken). 2. Add the vanilla essence and beat it until a lightly whipped cream is made. This is another step for your helper. 3. Add the condensed milk. Make sure you keep beating it until it starts to get thick and turns into a nice cream. 4. Crush the cookies. This is my favourite step! Try not to eat the cookies ; ) 5. The next step for your helper is to keep beating the cream and to add the cookies (Yummo) 6. Pour all the ingredients into a container that has a lid on it to seal it. Put it into the freezer until it goes hard. We made the ice cream at night and put it in the freezer overnight for about 8 hours. 7. Ready to serve.
Wollondilly Council has made a submission to the NSW Upper House Inquiry into the Proposal to raise the Warragamba Dam Wall, highlighting the cultural significance of Aboriginal sites and European heritage in the Burragorang Valley as well as potential ecological impacts. The area that would be inundated as a consequence of the proposed raising of the existing Warragamba Dam wall is entirely located within the Wollondilly Local Government Area. Council has heard from the community about the feared loss of cultural heritage, both Gundungurra and European, the effects on biodiversity and the overall concerns about the impact on the Warragamba community and the management of such a large project. Council’s Manager Environment, Alexandra Stengl said, “We are concerned that our national parks, cultural sites and world heritage areas may be significantly damaged as a result of raising the Warragamba Dam wall”. “We have requested that significantly more time and resources be allocated to Aboriginal and early European heritage surveys as part of the dam raising Environmental Impact Statement”. Council’s concerns about the ecological impacts focus on a number of endangered species and ecological communities within the inundation area. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has raised similar concerns about the extent and frequency of flooding associated with the raising of the dam. The submission raises the need to consider the effect of the project on the Warragamba community. Council had previously requested that an analysis and planning for the management of impacts on the town during the construction phase be undertaken, including the implications of truck movements on the narrow roads. Council has requested to appear before the Select Committee that is enquiring into and reporting on the Government’s proposal for the dam at a Public Hearing on 20 November. Wollondilly has joined forces with Blue Mountains Council to campaign on these issues and a Community Forum is planned for 10 November. r Warragamba Dam | Image: WaterNSW

Did you say.... Chair Yoga? Local health and wellbeing business Yoga Therapy with Toneet are currently organising chair yoga and meditation classes for the community, to be held at Wallacia Progress Hall. The dates and times of the classes are soon to be advised; however, they are looking at Tuesday or Friday mornings. The chair yoga and meditation classes will include gentle chair yoga, pranayama (breathing) followed by meditation. Chair yoga is suitable for seniors, less mobile people and people with medical issues. This can include those with chronic pain such as fibromyalgia and arthritis as well as depression and anxiety. “I have suffered with stress and anxiety and I have fibromyalgia. I went overseas to study yoga and concentrate on my health. Both yoga and meditation have assisted me with my lifestyle, and it has motivated me to help others” said Yoga Instructor Toneet Gill. The cost will be $90 for 6 classes, $140 for 10 classes and $18 for a casual class visit. Bookings are required. To book, please contact Toneet on 0424 947 303. Exercise – How it protects Mitochondria and prevents Muscle Loss with Aging Mitochondria are tiny bacteria, that billions of years ago invaded the cells of our ancient ancestor’s. They directly or indirectly, power everything that happens inside our cells. Their number per cell is a measure of cellular health. Reduced levels underlie age-related muscle loss & debility, while highermitochondria-levels help ensure muscle: 1. Volume, 2. Health, 3. Ability to respond to therapy The young (on average) respond to therapy faster. Given that mitochondrial number and activity declines with age, an ‘age related’ decline in people’s ability to respond to therapy seems self-evident, right? Wrong. It doesn’t need to be so. A key for maintaining healthy muscle mitochondria with age is regular exercise. Terjung etal (2002), state that far from being a natural outcome of aging, reduced mitochondrial number & loss of muscle mass and function is more likely due to the fact that, as we get older, we become sedentary. Research shows that: 1. Lifelong endurance training attenuates decline in both pumping efficiency and cardiac output of blood 2. Exercise robustly increases building of new blood capillaries in muscle of older people
r The weather station at Luddenham Public School | Image Supplied
22 October 2019 www.mulgoagazette.com.au
3. This increased ‘capillarity’ allows an increase in oxygen uptake of active muscle by 25% 4. Exercise sends hormonal signals to muscle. This results in significant increases in muscle cell mitochondrial content in older people. These new mitochondria are the end users of the oxygen for ATP production 5. Together the improvement in blood & oxygen delivery capacity combined with greater mitochondrial numbers, allows the production of significantly more ATP 6. This ensures great muscle power in every muscle cell during exercise 7. This mitochondrial capacity stays with us after exercise. So, during periods of rest in between bouts of training, muscles now have much-improved blood flow and nutrient and oxygen delivery, and greater energy production capacities, allowing highly efficient: a. repair of any tissue damage done during exercise, b. building of new muscle cells & connective tissue c. day to day function (including cell maintenance) d. improved healing capacity Again, it is easy to see why people who exercise heal more quickly. Exercise lowers inflammation both locally in muscle tissue and systemically. We will discuss this next month.

Tonic immobility is a natural state of paralysis in animals that is brought on by knismesis, i.e. low levels of rubbing or tickling. In 1997, a female orca was seen purposely inducing tonic immobility on a great white shark. She rubbed its snout for 15 minutes until the shark, held upside down, suffocated to death.

Whoa! Hit the handbrake. Here we are in October already. The month where we’re greeted with another set of school holidays and dare I say it, the month where we begin to lay out our plans for Christmas and the New Year! Here at the District Gazette we are passionate about raising funds and awareness of rare lung diseases. Many of these are terminal with no treatment available. We’d like to see more research, treatment and in a perfect world, a cure so that those afflicted no longer suffer in silence. Hand in hand with the Lung Foundation we’re hosting a Fundraising ‘Supper with Spirit’ and would love for you to join us! See page 11 for all the details. Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Do more of what makes you happy’.
