Lisa Harrold Recognised as a Leader Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP made a surprise visit to Gow Park during a midweek Landcare session last week, to award Lisa Harrold a NSW Government Community Service Award. Ms Harrold of Mulgoa Valley Landcare was presented with her award in recognition of the years she has devoted to protecting and conserving the natural environment of Western Sydney. The NSW Government Community Service Award recognizes people throughout NSW who have substantially contributed to the improvement of the quality of life of members of their community, beyond that expected in their usual occupation. Mrs Davies said that as a volunteer leader, Lisa definitely met the criteria for this award. “Lisa is the president of the Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group and has been associated with various other conservation groups and projects in Western Sydney for many years. “ “I have always been impressed by her passion and drive to protect our environment and conserve the natural beauty of Western Sydney for future generations” “The commitment of her time and energy is just incredible” Mrs Davies said. Ms Harrold was overwhelmed when Mrs Davies visited Gow Park to present her with the award. “Thank you so much Tanya, it means a lot to be recognised” Ms Harrold said.

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE
Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161 Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.
ANZAC Day and Good Friday These two public holidays over two consecutive months celebrate self-sacrifice for the good of others. On ANZAC Day we recall those who served and gave their lives in defence of their country. The idea of self-sacrifice is a Christian idea. The Christian message is that the eternal Son of God gave his life for us. Jesus says, ‘ Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13 NIV). He went on to embody that love. Jesus says he ‘did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’ (Mark 10:45 NIV). Jesus, the Good Shepherd, laid down his life for his sheep (John 10:11). One would think, if you looked at our world, that ‘leadership’ climbing over other contenders in the battle to sit atop the pile, no matter who gets stepped on along the way. Mao Tse Tung, Joseph Stalin, and Pol Pot’s policies are credited with the deaths of millions of their own people. And while they have exceeded us in brutality, sadly many of us become lesser tyrants of our own paltry kingdoms. So loving service for others involving suffering is remarkable. We are cynical. We rightly regard selfishness and self-interest as the default human motive. Altruism is often tinged with other motives. How different is Jesus Christ. He willing gave his life for his people, in his death on the cross. Islam sees this as unworthy of a great prophet. The Jewish leaders who wanted him crucified saw his death as the ultimate proof of his
accursedness (Deuteronomy 21:23). But it was for us that he bore that curse (Galatians 3:13). ‘Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’ (Romans 5:7-8 NIV) Matt Olliffe

Mulgoa’s Most Successful Rider Thomas McDermott of Mulgoa found himself in the spotlight at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show (the Show) after being invited to take part in the prestigious Parade of Champions by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS). After great success in 2012, the Parade of Champions was held on Excellence in Agriculture Day to celebrate NSW and Australia’s agricultural past, present and future. Making his show debut at the tender age of 15 in the Showjumping Competition, Tom McDermott’s Show career has since flourished. He has won numerous titles including the prestigious Young Rider of the Show in junior and senior classes, as well as Junior and Senior Showjumping Champion. Tom’s favourite memories of his Show career include winning the 2012 World Cup qualifier with his Jumping Horse of Show, CP Romantic Dream, as well as being awarded the EFA Perpetual Cup, all at the age of 19. At this year’s Show, Tom took out the award for Most Successful Rider in Jumping Contests, homage to his hard work and passion for Showjumping. Tom also competed in the Showjumping World Cup qualifier, which he believes is the most prestigious of its kind. Despite competing in Shows across Australia and training overseas in Europe, Tom loves competing at the Show because of the amazing atmosphere and the massive crowds that Showjumping attracts each year. The Parade was made up of around 30 members of the Show family who have made outstanding contributions to the Show over the years and have a swag of blue ribbons to their name. President of the RAS, Glenn Dudley, said the Sydney community should be proud of Tom’s achievements and commitment over many years at the Show. “For many years the Show has brought together country families who have a passion for regional Australia to see what is happening over the boundary fence and to support their extended community,” Mr Dudley said. “Since opening our doors back in 1823, we have celebrated the very best in Australian food and fibre and this is what the Parade of Champions is all about – celebrating excellence. “As we recognise the 190th anniversary of the very first Show, it is great to see so many exhibitors continuing the tradition today,” he said. Gardening – When Size Matters Most of us think of our garden as a sanctuary from the stresses of daily life, a place to relax and admire. Patches of ground are highly priced and space should be used wisely. In the plant world there are now so many options available for even the smallest of gardens. Walls are an ideal way to show off plants espaliered or colourful climbing plants. New varieties of dwarf citrus trees and fruit trees are perfect in large containers. The beauty of these edible favourites is they only grow half of the standard tree yet still produce full sized fruit. Or if you’re looking for a hedge with an edge why not try the min-a-min dwarf murraya, a classic popular highly fragrant plant with glossy green foliage. These plants and many more are available at Glenmore Garden Plus -757 Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa Happy Gardening- Lee-Anne

The Scrutiny of GOD
“Search me O God, and know my heart….” Psalm 139
For this month’s meditation, I want to instil a thought in your mind that I hope will be helpful to you not only now but in the years to come. The safest form of self-examination is that which is carried out in the presence of the Holy Spirit and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Some Christians seem to be always examining their hearts and thus become very unhealthy introspective. Others never examine their hearts and become spiritually indolent and lethargic. Reviewing our relationship with God should be a regular activity. I know many Christians who examine their hearts every Sunday. They claim this is the best time, when work and other pressures can be dismissed from the mind. The whole purpose of spiritual reflection is to identify the things that should not be in our lives and to bring them to God so that they may be uprooted. If the Holy Spirit is not invited to the moment of selfexamination then it is possible that we could end up in a state of self-pity rather than contrition. The Spirit never moves us to self-pity; The Spirit moves us to repentance. Self-pity is an enemy of repentance because it is an attempt to remove the soul’s pain by humanistic means rather than by entrusting oneself to God and His Holy Spirit. The psalmist had the right idea when he prayed: “Search

me, O God.. See if there is any offensive way in me..(22-23). Could I suggest, begin with that prayer, wait before God to see what He will make you conscious of. Then ask Him for forgiveness and go out into the day, knowing that God has forgiven you and cleansed you. Heavenly Father, help me to regularly open up the depths of my heart to Your Spirit, the divine Counsellor. May He search me and see if there is any wicked way in me – anything that hinders the flow of Your life through me. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Pastor Uel.

Tough Mudder comes to Mulgoa Saturday, 14th April, Mulgoa will have played host to a Tough Mudder event at Fern Hill Estate. Described as ‘probably the toughest event on the planet’, Tough Mudder events are hard core 12-20 kilometre obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses, 700,000 inspiring participants worldwide to date, and more than $5 million raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world. Tough Mudder events are not marathons or triathlons. They test your allaround mettle, not just your ability to run in a straight line, on your own, for hours on end. The obstacle courses are not for the faint hearted and can be very challenging. However, Mudders (as they are known) do not take themselves too seriously. At the end of the day, it’s all about the fun experience you have. They meet at the finish line with a beer, a laugh, and a rockin’ live band. When you’re covered in mud and have just finished an obstacle called ‘Just The Tip’, it’s hard not to walk away without a sense of humour. Many participants show up in ridiculous team costumes to get a feel for the spirit of Tough Mudder. To get through mud, fire, ice-water, and 10,000 volts of electricity you need teammates to pick you up when your spirits dip. To get over 12 foot walls and through underground mud tunnels, you need teammates to give you a boost and a push. Tough Mudders are team players who make sure no one gets left behind. To that end, all Mudders are expected to uphold their ideals and exhibit teamwork and camaraderie both on the course and off it. Source: http://toughmudder. com/about/

It’s SHOW time! It was all about FUN at the Luddenham Easter Festival, which took place at the Luddenham Showground from Good Friday till Easter Monday. For the third year running, 5th generation showman Shane Blades, wife Karen and their team brought their successful show to town! It was a huge hit with families in the local community. Offering free entry and parking, a great variety of rides including dodgem cars, a giant slide, merrygo-round, mirror maze, pony rides, boat rides, a new ride called the ‘Midnight Express’ as well as all the latest show bags; there was no doubt that it was the perfect place to be if you were looking to avoid the hectic crowds and queues, but still enjoy all the action on offer at Easter. To top it off, there was a spectacular fireworks display on Good Friday, Egg hunt on Easter Sunday and two lucky families won a bicycle. Check out our photo gallery below, which captures just some of the action this year. The show will be back bigger and better next year!

Free Health Clinic for Women Lollylicious Success Story Women’s health nurses are making it easier for local women to take time out of their busy schedules to look after their health and wellbeing. The Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre in Warragamba is running a monthly, free and confidential Well Women’s Clinic. The Clinic provides pap tests, breast checks, pregnancy tests, postnatal checks, sexual health tests and information on women’s health topics including contraception, healthy living, menopause and emotional health. South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWS LHD) Women’s Health Nurse, Lorena Schot said the Clinic provided women with a friendly, relaxed and safe environment to seek assistance. “At the Clinic we provide a longer consultation, which gives women time to discuss their health concerns,” Ms Schot said. “Many women also prefer their health screening be undertaken by a female worker, and as a women’s health nurse, I’m able to provide this service,” she said. The Clinic works closely with local GPs and other services that women can be referred to if they require more specialised care. To make an appointment call 4774 1273.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph: 0409 986 121 Email: Narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Emotional Coaching Last month, I gave you an outline of a parenting tool called “emotion coaching”. This month, I thought I would give you an example of how I do emotion coaching. I don’t follow the outline exactly. I go with what is happening at the time. The most important part is that you acknowledge your child’s feelings, stay with her whilst she is upset, and support her to move on when she is ready. Scene: My youngest son accidently washed a Christmas beetle down the sink. He loves all creatures, and has a compassionate heart. I heard a wail from the bathroom, and him screaming that he had killed the beetle. Me: You are so sad about the Christmas beetle getting washed down the sink (noticing the emotion). He headed towards me and leapt into my arms for a hug. He continued to cry and lament the death of the Christmas beetle. This boy has big emotions. Me: You are so, so sad. You are worried that it has died. You wish it hadn’t happened. You are crying. (Reflecting what he was saying and observing what he was doing.) I continued to hold him, and reflect his sadness. Me: Where do you feel your sadness? Boy: In my heart, and in my eyes because I can’t stop crying (locating the emotion in the body). Me: I would feel sad too because I like creatures too (empathising). When he had calmed down, and he was over his upset,
I asked him what he knew about Christmas beetles (exploring). We had a discussion about Christmas beetles. How they change from lawn grubs into beetles. How our dogs dig up the grubs and eat them (yuk!). This wasn’t a teaching moment, it was a shared moment - I know what interests him. His dad piped up and said that Christmas must be coming again because it was a Christmas beetle, and that made the boy laugh. Part of being a positive parent is helping to organise your child’s feelings. It is not telling her to “get over it, and on with it”. It’s not dismissing how she feels. It’s not distracting her with a toy to try to cheer her up. It is being with your child through all of the bigness and discomfort of it all. You don’t want your child to be so upset or angry, and you are tempted to try and move her through it quickly so you can get on with being calmer and happier. However, the more you acknowledge your child’s feelings and “be with” her, the more emotionally attuned she will become. In time, she will learn how to organise her own feelings because she has had it modelled for her. I don’t live in Disneyland. I know this is not possible all of the time. There are days when I have a screaming boy when I’m trying to get out the door to get to work. I do some acknowledging of feelings but I tell him that I don’t have time to organise his feelings the way he is used to. Because he is “heard” most of the time, he can tolerate the times when it’s not possible. Next month: How to do emotion coaching with an angry child. Narelle Smith

Mother’s Day Grievances As we celebrate Mother’s Day it is sobering to remember that not all sons and daughters have had a nurturing positive experience from their mothers. As a consequence Mother’s Day is tinged with ambiguity, anger and unresolved emotions for what you didn’t or couldn’t receive from your mother. It can be very hard when the people we need love from the most can’t give it to us. We can spend our life hoping to get more from our mum than she is able to provide. When the people who
were supposed to give us love can’t — or won’t — we need to be able to get it from others. My encouragement is to grieve what we couldn’t get – and never can get from our mother. It is only when we can adequately grieve our childhood needs that we can start to find the love we need from other sources. We can begin to turn our attention to growing the relationships with other family members and others outside our family who care for us. As we let go of what our mother in their own limitations can’t give - it allows us to use our energy to develop friendships and supportive relationships with others.
Holy Family School Update
from the desk of Principal: Mr Tim Vane-Tempest
Catholic Schools Week and Grandparents Day On Friday 15th March Holy Family School celebrated its annual Grandparent’s Day along with Catholic Schools Week. This is a day that celebrates the important contribution that grandparents play in the lives of their families and in particular the lives of the children of Holy Family School. The celebrations included a mass, shared morning tea in the schools grounds and a visit to classrooms for parents. The theme for this year was Every Student Counts has been chosen to signify that each child is at the centre of the work we do in Catholic Education. Once again we had a magnificent day and great roll up of parents and grandparents. More than 600 guests participated in a celebration of the Eucharist, a brunch provided by our parents and a series of concert items prepared and performed by the students and staff. The wide range of the talents of the students where showcased during the performance. The creativity and commitment of the teachers in coordinating each of the acts and preparing the children for the day was yet another example of their contribution to making Holy family School a place of school educational excellence. This day again highlighted the strong community involvement and commitment to our school from our parent group. Our Parent Rep Group were instrumental in the organisation of the brunch and providing the cakes, biscuits and savouries that all guests enjoyed on the day. Also it again showed the strength of our relationship with our neighbouring schools with some of the hospitality students from Caroline Chisholm College assisting with service of the brunch to our guests. The work of these girls and the cooperation we have with Caroline Chisholm College helps to make this day run smoothly. On behalf of the school community I would like to express my thanks to all those who made a contribution to the day. Grandparents Day at Holy Family School is a fantastic day to celebrate our Catholic faith, and to highlight the talents and commitment of our students and teachers. Soccer Gala Day Congratulations to the Stage 3 girls that participated at the Stage 3 Girls Soccer Gala Day on 26th March. On a hot day the girls played 7 matches winning 3 and drawing the other 4 games. As a result the girls won their competition on the day finishing well clear of the nearest team. Thanks to all the parents and other family members who were present to support the girls. The support made for a very enjoyable day for all involved. 12

The team was Renee Farrugia, Alisha Ford, Rachael Farrugia, Julia Saliba, Kimberly Bartolo, Anna Shulgin, Ashley Refalo, Katelyn Fenech Andrea Tassone, Danielle MacKay, Carla Penza, Brooklyn Pearce, Jasmine Torbelis, and Mercedes Heiler National Young Leaders Day On Monday the 25th of March the student leaders had the privilege to attend the National Young Leaders Day. Whilst there, we learnt lots of leadership skills and how to be a better leader. We got the opportunity to listen to Jessica Fox’s inspiring story and she brought in her silver medal. Although she had her ups and downs she now has a new goal to attend the 2016 Olympics in Rio. She also said that everything is possible. We also listened to Brett Lee who was a police officer for 22 years and a detective for 16 of those. He travelled to Iraq to teach them to be a police officer. His biggest regret was not finishing high school. We learnt to be true to yourself when using the internet. Nathan Hindmarsh was another speaker who taught us to follow our dreams. He was offered a scholarship at Patrician Brothers and took the opportunity, but after four weeks he didn’t like it. His mum encouraged him to go back and follow his dreams. He continued to go and he became a professional NRL player. Story by: Carla Penza, Brooke Hoban, Danielle Mackay, Isaac Klaser, Addison Carney & Zac Andonopolous.
Wallacia Hotel Upgrade Near Completion With renovations in the beer garden complete, a new look bar and lounge area, as well as state of the art tab facilities, Wallacia Hotel, is almost completely reborn. Whilst maintaining its heritage façade, once you step inside you are entering one of Western Sydney’s best kept secrets. Our beer garden offers an idealic setting with our famous trees being the centrepiece, a new child’s play area and a retractable roof over the dining area that can be opened to make the most of the beautiful autumn weather we are having. We have seating for over 200 people in the beer garden, with half of this is undercover. The misting fans are installed and have been brilliant on those hot summer days. Our new areas are allowing greater flexibility and our functions coordinator, Kylie Gibson, is ready to organise all those life events that need celebrating. To start with Kylie, has planned our first Bridal Expo, which has a wonderful group of local suppliers that are excited to have a great local heritage building to use as their backdrop. It is on Sunday 14th April, 2013, between 11am and 3 pm, all are welcome and entry is free. There are great prizes to win, and everyone that you could possibly need to plan your big day will be here in a one stop shop. On the Sunday we will also have great local band Ebony & Ivory playing in the beer garden, between 2pm and 5pm. Our bistro will also be open from 12noon until 9pm, and will be putting some small samples together for our bridal fair. Kylie says that, “this is a great space with lots of potential to be elegant, and I can’t wait to offer brides something that has that country feel, but be so close to everything.” An expo such as this allows brides to see so many different options and just get a feel for the room and what options are available. Our Function Room is also a great size for christenings, birthday parties, anniversaries, conferences or meetings. The kids play area, also means that we are able to host kids birthday parties and take all the hassle out of these events for you as well. Kylie has packages ready for these events, but is also happy to discuss any ideas you may have as well.

Cranberry Apple Pie Ingredients • Serves 8 Pie 1 refrigerated pie pastry 2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and quartered 2 cups fresh cranberries (thawed if frozen) 2/3 cup sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 1/2 tablespoons flour Crumb Topping 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 4 tablespoons cold butter, cut into 1/4-inch pieces Method 1. Preheat oven to 200ºC. Line a 23 cm standard (not deep-dish) pie pan with the pastry, fluting the edge. 2. Thinly slice the apples crosswise and combine them in a large bowl with the cranberries. Add the sugar, lemon juice, and flour, mixing well. Transfer the filling to the pie shell, smoothing the top of the fruit. Bake for 30 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and cinnamon for the topping. Add the butter, rubbing it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. 4. After 30 minutes, remove the pie from the oven and reduce the temperature to 190ºC. Spread the topping over the pie and bake it for another 25 to 30 minutes, until the top is golden and the fruit thickens and bubbles around the edges. 5. Allow the pie to cool before serving.

Before I was a Mum I cleaned my house each day. I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby. I didn’t worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mum I had never been puked on...pooped on... spit on... chewed on, or peed on. I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts. I slept all night.
Before I was a Mum I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn’t want to put him down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop the hurt. Warragamba White The Winners
All for Love
On Saturday the 23rd March, three Warragamba Wombat U/8 teams ventured down to Picton to contest and defend the annual Group 6 Country Rugby League Chairman’s Cup. All three teams showed courage and determination to represent Warragamba on what was a big day of footy for all. The Warragamba White U/8 team were the eventual winners defeating Thirlmere Maroon in a hard fought grand final, 24 points to 12. The grand final win capped of a day of undefeated performances for Warragamba White who scored 210 points over a total of six games, while only conceded 20 points over the course of the day. Despite it being a hot day and only having nine players the team showed the highest levels of commitment, determination, courage and professionalism through all of their encounters. The grand final win is an excellent achievement by the team and a moment all of the boys can be very proud of. Congratulations to Warragamba White on an excellent team performance and for being crowned the Chairman’s Cup winners for 2013. Well done also to the Warragamba Black and Warragamba Blue U/8 sides for their efforts. Both sides displayed maturity and professionalism and the club is proud of the excellent job all boys did to represent the club on the day.

Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check by Camille and Erin. They have had their first vaccination, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 4 lovely kittens ready for adoption now. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly. If you can tolerate Pony, you can tolerate any dog! The 4 kittens are from the same litter and are 10 weeks of age. Katie is a tortoiseshell female. Kevin is a white and ginger male. Kobie is a ginger male. Kyle is a ginger and white male. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a
balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. New Nursing Staff We are growing! We employed 2 new veterinary nurses in November 2012, and have just employed another qualified nurse. Liz is joining our team with 5 years of veterinary nursing experience. Liz is a qualified veterinary nurse and pet stylist. Her qualification is Pro Groomer Level 1 and 2, and she was trained by a master groomer. Liz has many pets, including: Syber the Siberian husky, who is very boisterous; Tiffany the Australian bulldog, who is a tank; Sefton the Beagalier, who just started puppy preschool here; Satchmo the smoodle, who is a typical neurotic poodle; and Abbey the cat, who is just a normal cat.
