Local Businesses Going for GOLD! The finalists for the Penrith-City Local Business Awards have been selected and named. It is no surprise that we are well represented by many local businesses. Mulgoa Valley Bakery, Hairline Mulgoa, Lollylicious.com.au , Mulgoa Real Estate, Admire Beaute’ Mulgoa, Orchard Hills Veterinary Clinic and Flowers by Shardan at Luddenham are revelling in this fantastic accolade. The Local Business Awards allow local businesses an unparalleled opportunity to highlight their business and it’s strengths, display their range of products and services and gain additional exposure within their local area. A rigorous judging process is undertaken to assess the finalists from the customer’s point of view. The judging is anonymous, and conducted by mystery shoppers. The winners will be announced at a magnificent gala evening on 5th September. The fantastic finale allows the opportunity to acknowledge everyone’s hard work and their contribution to the business’ success - a shared celebration of the business’ achievements. Shardan Brancato, owner of Flowers by Shardan at Luddenham says “I was so happy when I received the call.” Flowers by Shardan has been operating for two and a half years, this being their first time in the awards and named as a finalist.

From the Editor Welcome to our OLYMPIC edition of the Mulgoa Valley & Warradale Gazette. The games have commenced, and if you are anything like me, you have found a good position on the lounge and are enjoying some armchair exercises as you show your support to our fellow Aussie Olympians! We have already received our first GOLD medal, 12 silver medals and 7 bronze. It was nothing less than awe inspiring to watch as our very own Jessica Fox achieved a silver medal for the Women’s K1 Canoe Slalom. This edition is jam-packed with our very own local achievements in a variety of shapes and forms. Jessee SalesHobart has achieved the prominent position of Junior Mayor, and, in true Olympic style our very own local businesses are going for their own GOLD as the finale to the Penrith-City Local Business Awards has arrived. Best of luck to them all! For something delicious the chef at Hopewood Retreat has provided a healthy (and patriotic) green & gold recipe this month for you to enjoy. Its quick and easy, leaving you more time for exercise and Michelle Beech has some practical advice on shedding those winter bulges. This edition highlights the exciting preparations and what’s in store at Dam Fest in October. This is one event that must not be missed! It’s time to put the kettle on, have a cuppa and enjoy this month’s community news. Remember (in true OLYMPIC spirit) the difference between ordinary and extraordinary, is that LITTLE bit extra.

Belinda Advertising policy: Priority is given to businesses connected to local residents. Any editorial focus on a local business may be included if space permits, at the Editor’s discretion. Jessee the Junior Mayor Congratulations to Jessee Sales-Hobart, in year 6 at Luddenham Public School who will take on the duties as Penrith Council’s Junior Mayor. Jessee (pictured here with Penrith City Council Mayor Greg Davies) will debate local issues at the mock council meeting on August 13. The Junior Councillor’s will have the chance to take part in a re-enactment trek as part of the bicentenary celebrations of the Blue Mountains first crossing.

The school captain was surprised at the announcement and did not expect to be named as Junior Mayor. She is ready to take on the challenge none the less. Jessee’s fellow Junior Councillors include Cody Knibbs, Grace Chamberlin (Luddenham Public School), Anna Ybabao,

Enjoy the Olympics... While You Can!

quarter of a century? She died in the late 90s after an epileptic seizure. Their magnificence only lasted a little while. Soon they succumb to old age and death like the rest of us, a shadow of their former selves. This winter I remarked to my wife that we haven't had many funerals. Then they started coming. Our elderly friends are having strokes, enduring fractures, experiencing isolation because of immobility, moving into nursing homes, and, sadly, dying. And if that's not bad enough, it's not just the elderly that die. Middle age friends die of cancer and heart attacks. And our young people die on the roads and out on the town. To bring up such tragedies in the midst of our Olympic celebrations of youth and health is not simply being a wet blanket or a party pooper. It is simply juxtaposing two realities: the reality of olympic magnificence, and the reality of sickness and death. 'Be happy, young man, while you are young ... but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment. ... Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, I find no pleasure in them' (Ecclesiastes 11:9-12:1 NIV). Jesus Christ died and rose again. So

We are now experiencing a veritable feast of televised sport. Two weeks every 4 years, we get sport sport sport, wall to wall. We become experts in games we don't really know anything about. On view are all those fit young (mostly) slim athletic bodies, running, swimming, jumping, spinning, throwing, fighting, lifting. If they wear our colours, compete under our flag and are winners, we feel good about ourselves and how excellent we are. If they lose, they experience not only their disappointment, but ours also. They will face a media enquiry about why they failed. And if you are hanging out for your regular TV programs, the good news is it's only 2 weeks every 4 years. Our athletes are magnificent specimens, and we should be proud of them. What they can do with their bodies is amazing, whether they win or not. However, sadly, their magnificence doesn't last. Remember that great Olympian Carl Lewis, who won 9 gold medals during the 80s and 90s? He now has arthritis. Remember Florence Griffith Joyner (Flo-Jo), whose world records in the 100 and 200 metres still stand after almost a

OLYMPIC EDITION Dorahy Clan Celebrate 175 Years in Australia Over 250 members of the Dorahy family gathered in the Mulgoa Valley on Sunday July 15th to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the family’s arrival in Australia. William and Ann Dorahy arrived with their family in July 1837 on the Adam Lodge. They were a farming family from County Tyrone recruited by an agent of Governor Bourke to bring valued skills to the growing colony. Having organised the baptism of their new son William at Parramatta they settled in the Greendale area as tenant farmers. Four of their eight children became parents and had a total of 48 children. The celebrations started with a gathering of the clan at the Greendale Cemetery to view the headstones of William and Ann and other early settlers and to enjoy the views of the local country side where their first farm was located. The group then adjourned to the Wallacia Hotel for lunch and to view a giant family tree over 7 metres long containing the names and photos of almost 2000 descendants of William and Ann. Amongst those attending was well known Rugby League player John Dorahy with members of his family. A large branch of the Dorahy family lives in the local area and many were in attendance. Anyone interested in being on the mailing list for future events please email Michael Dorahy at mldorahy@optusnet.com.au.

OLYMPIC EDITION

Dam Fest at it’s Best! It’s here again, the lead up to the exciting festivities of Dam Fest has arrived. An annual fun packed day for the whole family, Sunday 21st October 2012 - save the date! Featuring a Car and Bike Show with awesome trophies to be won, the show is enhanced by amusement rides for the children, market stalls for the parents, free entertainment all day long, and much more. Helicopter rides are available, flying over the Warragamba catchment, this year at full capacity. What a marvellous experience for young and old alike!

Children getting up close and personal with the farm animals

As a community event there are exhibits and stalls by many groups including the Rural Fire Service, National Parks and Wildlife, Senior Citizens (pick up that home-made jam just like nanna’s), Men's Shed, Warradale Art Group and many, many more. There will be a free animal farm so children can experience first-hand interaction with a variety of animals. There will also be a very special visitor to the event. ‘Rexie’ the baby TRex will be making an appearance. It is amazing what all that rain earlier this year unearthed when the dam was full and overflowing! A feature of the day is the Billy Cart derby, always a thrilling event with lots of good hearted rivalry for the prizes on offer. The day will also include a live fire display by the NSW Fire Brigade reinforcing the serious lessons in fire safety. Then the children (including the older ‘kids’) can experience the fire trucks first hand. The Rural Fire Service, National Parks and Wildlife, and NSW Police have displays on the day and this is a great way for everyone to meet our ‘community protectors’ and learn something of what they do and the role they play in our everyday lives. For an absolutely fabulous day out, take the drive to Warragamba and join in the fun. Held in the beautiful picnic grounds of Warragamba Recreation Reserve you can experience the Visitors Centre and view Warragamba Dam. You will be amazed by the interactive display in the Visitors Centre, something nobody should miss; a truly amazing educational feature. For further information: visit the website: www.wsnc.org. au/events/damfest; email: damfest@wsnc.org.au or phone 02 4774 1273 Entry is $5 per adult and $2 per child.

OLYMPIC EDITION

Do you work from home? and appreciate good company? Working at home has many benefits, but one of the downfalls is the social isolation. In fact, sometimes you don’t realise how much you miss the day to day social interaction until you read something like this article. Self care, which includes connecting with others, is important for you and your business. It invigorates, stimulates and nourishes you. And when you’re feeling your best (mentally, physically and emotionally) your business will be at its best, too. This is where a Rotary Club can be ideal. As an organisation primarily set up to provide good company with local people, it can be ideal for a man or women who spend most of their week at home. The Rotary Club of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley covers the area of Wallacia, Mulgoa, Luddenham, Silverdale, Warragamba and Glenmore Park. We meet Wednesday evenings, 7.15pm – 8.45pm, at the Mulgoa Reception Function Rooms (1440 Mulgoa Rd, between Mulgoa and Wallacia). Dinner is provided for a fee and we have interesting speakers and other entertaining activities. Pay us a ‘look-see’ visit and be our guest for the evening.

OLYMPIC MIND, BODY, SPIRIT

Green Diet Wins Gold Medal

Mint, Pea and Avocado Salad Here’s a real gold medal meal, to bring out the best in all of us. It’s super healthy, and most importantly quick and easy, leaving more time for training! Best of all, it highlights the green and gold colours of our Aussie Olympians! Courtesy of Hopewood.

Starch | Serves 4-6 INGREDIENTS • 500g fresh peas, cooked and cooled • 3 avocados, peeled and cubed • 2 bunches of fresh asparagus, washed and trimmed (steam for 1 minute optional) • 3 fresh mint leaves, chopped • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 1 tablespoon sweet chilli sauce • 1 tablespoon honey METHOD Toss all prepared ingredients together and serve.

*Recipe reprinted with permission from hopewood@home, Hopewood Health Retreat’s cookbook of healthy recipes to share with family and friends.

When we think about vegetarians, athletes and Olympians probably aren’t the first people that come to mind – but perhaps they should be. In fact, eating a vegetarian diet can easily provide your body with the protein and nutrients it needs to be a power house. Just ask distance runner David McNeill, a vegetarian who will be making his Olympic debut in London this year. Unlike many of us who often let our eating habits slip over the colder months, McNeill and other London 2012 medallist hopefuls have to keep up their good eating habits all year round, and it’s a lesson we can learn from! With Olympic fever just about to envelop the nation, there’s no better incentive to be healthy and active than watching our home-grown prospective champions going for gold. According to Hopewood Health Retreat’s Head Chef, John Estival, although we realise the importance of healthy eating or benefits of vegetarianism, many of us simply don’t have the knowledge to prepare meals that are both wholesome and exceptionally delicious. “Very few of us think we have the time to create meals that are really good for us, or we believe that healthy meals mean bland and boring flavours. The reality though is that healthy eating can be fast and uncomplicated, and is delicious as well as having added nutritional value.” Hopewood Health Retreat has recently introduced healthy cooking classes, presented by the Head Chef, who strongly believes that once equipped with the right knowledge, preparing a healthy vegetarian dish is a breeze. “It’s like I tell people in my classes, vegetarian cooking doesn’t limit your options – instead it opens up a whole world of tasty and healthy dishes,” says Estival. Now we’ve been experiencing some warmer days, some of us are anticipating Spring, the end of the Winter blues, flowers in bloom, fresh air, sunshine and lighter clothing. Naturally, when the weather is cold, it is easier to give in to the temptation of rich, filling foods to warm us and bring comfort. Unfortunately, this also means that many of us carry a bit more weight than we would normally like to and in Winter it is more difficult to find time to move our bodies and keep active and trim. Many of us wake in the morning with good intentions - picturing ourselves looking shiny, new, healthy and thinner. We think, today is the day I will make the change. However, no matter how good our intentions we often give in to our weaknesses. I hear it over and over again, people tell me how hard they’ve tried but they feel like they are failures. There are many reasons for weight gain, and sub-optimal health, and it is not always due entirely to what we consume. There are many factors which include: – Hormonal, especially for women who are peri or postmenopausal or suffering PMS issues – Wrong food choices – especially when you believe these foods are healthy. There is a lot of misinformation from food manufacturers who are out there to push their products. – Foods that are not compatible with your metabolism or blood type that may cause inflammation or mild allergy which can upset our digestive processes resulting in poor absorption, assimilation and elimination. – Foods that increase hunger and appetite, rather than satiate it. – Sometimes nutritional deficiencies keep our bodies craving for the wrong things. – Not enough exercise and movement and especially lack of motivation. And the list goes on. So what to do? The good news is there is much than can be done with often minor, sustainable and achievable lifestyle changes. Knowledge is power. Being a Naturopath/Nutritionist, I am able to work with my patients providing that knowledge and self-empowerment. Obviously, there are no magic pills, so to speak, but there are many herbs and nutrients, and homeopathy that make the journey achievable, along with lifestyle coaching and goal-setting. I have recently established my new clinic at 48 Lucasville Road, Glenbrook (just up the road from Glenbrook village.) Diabetes Diabetes is a disorder where the body cannot properly use of the glucose it gets from food. We all need glucose (or sugar) in our blood, as it is the most efficient energy source. However, if you have too much sugar in the blood, then you may feel tired all the time, be thirsty and need to go to the toilet more often. Unfortunately many people who have diabetes have no symptoms. Factors that increase the risk of diabetes are the aging population, the fact that we are less active, and we are becoming more overweight. There are three main types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes. Type 1 is usually diagnosed in children and young adults; Type two is usually in older, sedentary, overweight people; and Gestational Diabetes, occurs in pregnant women. The biggest health issue is with the number of people developing Type 2 diabetes . Not only are there more people being diagnosed, but they are also getting it at a younger age, meaning they will have to live with diabetes for a longer time. Diabetes can be managed with healthy eating, an active lifestyle and the addition of medications when required. The medications may be tablets or injections, and may be used in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Women with Gestational Diabetes that cannot be controlled by diet alone, must be managed with injections of insulin. Help is available for people with diabetes, from a range of health professionals who can provide information and training. These include Diabetes Educators, Dietitians, Podiatrists, Exercise Physiologists, and your local doctor. If you would like more information on managing diabetes, your GP can organise a referral to see the relevant health professionals, with Medicare rebates available (conditions apply). PARENT’S CORNER Miss/ Master Warradale 2012 Enter Now !!!!!!!! This year’s Miss/ Master Warradale Pageant will be held in September and organiser, WigWam Co-ordinator Belinda Griffiths is urging people to enter now. Miss & Master Warradale’s pageant is open for all males and females between the ages of 3 years and 99 years of age in our community. The pageant is in its 9th year and is a fundraiser for Warradale Wig Wam Out Of School Hours and Vacation Care Service. The idea of the Pageant originally was to give young girls of our community a platform to announce what visions they have, in the small rural community they are growing up in and how they could shape their town if given the chance. The event is a chance to do something for others, to build on their self-esteem, an opportunity to invest in public speaking and showcase that hidden talent that lies within all of us. In 2011 we introduced the concept of equal opportunity entrance criteria- inviting our male counterparts to participate. This opened the door to the categories for Master Warradale. There are plenty of ideas for each entrant to fundraise and we organise a large raffle to kick off their efforts. Contestants can hold cake stalls, sell raffle tickets or hold sausage sizzles. The ideas are infinite. This year’s raffle prize is a new Volkswagen car (in conjunction with the Sydney Swans community raffle). On the night entrants will be given the opportunity to impress the judges with their talents and aspirations, with categories for fundraising and ‘star potential’. The night of Saturday 8th September is when the pageant reaches its climax, with their announcement of the winners and the crowning ceremony; it is a great family night complete with dinner and entertainment. The venue for the event is Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club. We are now accepting entrants for this year’s pageant and even if you don’t know anybody in the pageant join us for a great night out. For more information contact Belinda on 4774 2450

Mulgoa Public School News Mulgoa Public School welcomed Relieving Principal, Mrs Janene Dwyer at the beginning of Term 3. She will head the school until the Department of Education and Communities formally appoints the new principal. Mrs Dwyer intends to continue the strong educational programs that have been in place at Mulgoa Public School in recent years as well as maintain the positive home/school relationships. Mulgoa Public School has an excellent reputation in preparing students for their school life through its Transition to School Program. Every Wednesday from 2-3pm students starting Kindergarten in the next year are invited to attend the school and interact with other children who will be in their class. Under the guidance of Mulgoa Public School staff, the children participate in games, reading, craft, drawing and computer activities. They sing songs, dance and get to know what school life is all about. To begin with they are accompanied by a parent or another adult family member and towards the end of the program they come by themselves. If you are considering enrolling your child at Mulgoa Public School come along for a visit and see for yourself what a great little school it is.

Mulgoa Public School along with Wallacia, Luddenham and Orchard Hills will held their combined Small Schools Gala Day and Athletics Carnival at Warragamba Sports Ground on Tuesday 31st July. It was a great opportunity for family to spend a day out cheering on their children and it is was also a wonderful event for our students to catch up with their friends from the other schools. Mulgoa Public School is located on Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa. Phone: 4773 8229 Website: http://www.mulgoa-p. schools.nsw.edu.au/

Child Restraint Laws – It’s Easy with BEESAFE The NSW Government recently updated Child Restraint Laws that require ALL children under seven years of age to be secured in a suitable child restraint or booster seat when travelling in a vehicle. Drivers will need to ensure that children younger than four years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle where that vehicle also has rear seats. Also, children under seven years of age cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle where that vehicle also has rear seats, unless all the rear seats are occupied by children younger than seven years. New standards introduced this year provide for shoulder height indicators on all new child car restraints being manufactured in Australia. These indicators are a guide for parents when choosing the correct child restraint for their child & have been introduced to assist parents where there has been confusion in the past regarding children’s height & weight. Correct selection of your child’s car restraint is critical, using an incorrect restraint based on your child’s circumstance can lead to serious consequences. While the newly shoulder height indicators are there to assist you, it is important that you understand the weight limitations of all restraints and for that you should seek the advice of experts. An unrestrained child sitting in the rear seat of a vehicle can hit the driver with force equivalent to the weight of a baby elephant. Surveys carried out by Kidsafe have found that some 69% of all child restraints inspected were found to be incorrectly fitted and some 25% would have put the child at risk of death or serious injury in an accident. Most importantly, properly fitted child restraints can reduce the risk of death or serious injury in road crashes by up to 70%. It is therefore vitally important

to have all child restraints fitted, if not inspected, by a trained professional. Beesafe Travel is an RTA Authorised Child Restraint & Seat Belt installation service, who have over 15 years experience in the professional fitting of child restraints. As your local authorised professionals, they operate a mobile service which comes right to your door. For maximum piece of mind, call Angela at Beesafe Travel now on 0404 132 208 for more information or to book a mobile installation.

Fishing Club reels them in again.... On Saturday 30th June, 90 people filled the Wallacia Bowling Club for the Wallacia Fishing Club Presentation Night. A terrific night was had by all. The Buffet meal of roast meats preceeded by oysters and followed by prawns was sensational as always. The music for the evening was provided by a 4 piece band “Dirty Little Thing” who played 80s and 90s Aussie Rock and Roll and had everyone on their feet dancing for a great part of the night. The 2012 Male Angler of the year was Bob Sinclair and the Female Angler of the year was Louise Fyfe. The Junior Angler of the Year was Chelsea Fyfe and the Encouragement Award for 2012 went to Emily Duncan. The Fishing Club meets every Thursday night at the Bowling Club 1 Roma Ave Wallacia. New members and families are always welcome.

Holy Family School News Celebrating Grandparents Day On Friday 27th July Holy Family School celebrated it’s annual Grandparent’s Day. This is a day that celebrates the important contribution that grandparents play in the lives of their families and in particular the lives of the children of Holy Family School. Once again we had a magnificent day and great roll up of parents and grandparents. More than 600 guests participated in a celebration of the Eucharist, a brunch provided by our parents and a series of concert items prepared and performed by the students and staff. The wide range of the talents of the students where showcased during the performance. The creativity and commitment of the teachers in coordinating each of the acts and preparing the children for the day was yet another example of their contribution towards making Holy Family School a school of educational excellence. This day again highlighted the strong community involvement and commitment to our school from our parent group. Our Parent Rep Group were instrumental in the organisation of the brunch and providing the cakes, biscuits and savouries that all guests enjoyed on the day. Also it again showed the strength of our relationship with our neighbouring schools with some of the hospitality students from Caroline Chisholm College assisting with service of the brunch to our guests. The work of these girls and the cooperation we have with Caroline Chisholm College helps to make this day run smoothly and add to the success of the day.

On behalf of the school community a huge thank you to all those who made a contribution to the day. Grandparents Day at Holy Family School is a fantastic day to celebrate all grandparents, our Catholic faith and to highlight the talents and commitment of our students and teachers.
