Australia Day Honours for Jan Jan Bradley of Luddenham was one of six local residents presented with a Penrith City Australia Day award last month. The awards were part of the Australia Day Council’s National program and recipients were nominated by their friends, family or peers as outstanding citizens who deserved a pat on the back for their community work. Jan was awarded a Penrith Appreciation Award after being nominated by her grandson Kia Douglas. She is a stalwart of the Wallacia and Mulgoa Rotary Club, having been its president twice in the past 12 years. She has also helped many local charities in donating furniture to the local youth homeless centre. She is a dedicated mother and grandmother; has three children and two step children and has hosted many exchange students from overseas. Penrith City Mayor Mark Davies said: “They are people who have demonstrated excellence in their field and are inspirational role models to others in the community.” Among the list of other award recipients, was Jessica Fox (Penrith resident), Penrith Citizen of the Year and Penrith Sports Person of the Year won a silver medal for canoeing in the 2012 London Olympics. In 2010, she won gold in the Singapore Summer Youth Olympics and a bronze in the Canoe Slalom World Championships. rProud Kia Douglas with Australia Day Award Recipient and Grandmother Jan Bradley

The Legend of
St Valentine
The history of Valentine’s Day – and the story of its patron saint – is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl--possibly his jailor’s daughter--who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and--most importantly--romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.
SPOTLIGHT ON...
Origins of Valentine’s Day: A Pagan Festival in February While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial--which probably occurred around A.D. 270 – others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Valentine’s Day: A Day of Romance Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”– at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14th St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE
Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161
Phyllis Florence Dunbar
Vale: 3 September 1925 – 22 January 2013
For three years I had the privilege of knowing Phyllis as her minister. This is her story. Phyllis Florence Delaney was born in Camden to mother Florence and father William, a farmer, labourer and woodcutter. Phyllis was their only surviving child. They were pioneers, living in the bush in the wooden cottage William built himself, still standing opposite Silverdale shooting range, in what was then called ‘Mulgoa Forest’. They lived in the bush without electricity, town water, or sewage, shopping in Camden once a month, and otherwise eating what they grew or caught. Phyllis attended the now closed Silverdale Public School, from ages 6 to 13. It was a daily 8 mile walk there and back. Phyllis left school at 14. She worked with her father 9 years, felling timber with axe and cross-cut saw, milling it at home, and delivering it. Phyllis in her bib-front overalls sowed crops and constructed rural post and wire fencing, some still standing today. Many have remarked how hard Phyllis worked, that she ‘worked like a man’. Remember Phyllis’ long strong hand shakes! As a young person, Phyllis would ride horse and sulky to Warragamba town hall (the site is opposite the current Caltex) to watch the pictures, to Fowler’s Store Wallacia to drink ginger beer from stone mugs, or to Camden for the monthly supplies. Phyllis and Mervin Dunbar were married at All Saints Church of England, Silverdale, on 4 December 1947. Phyllis was 23, and their reception was at ‘Resthaven’ Guesthouse, owned by Phyllis’ grandmother Mrs Coveny, then located at the site of the Green Watertower in Warragamba. 4

Phyllis and Mervin built a one room wooden cottage on 3 acres of her father’s property, made of gum trees they felled. When daughter Elizabeth was born on 24 October 1949, they made a second room from two large wooden boxes provided by Clinton Motors at Camden. Sadly Phyllis lost stillborn twins and later a baby boy, William George, at one day old. This was a hard blow for Phyllis. Happily, David Arthur was born on 16 January 1957. Phyllis then moved to the site of what is now the family home, at 121 Silverdale Road. It consisted of an acre, with a small cottage. At this time, Phyllis got hepatitis, and was hospitalised for some months. Soon afterwards, a council inspector condemned the dwelling, so Phyllis borrowed from the Wollondilly Building Society to build the current dwelling. Phyllis did many jobs around the district. She worked on the Anderson’s farm at Jerry’s Creek Wallacia, on a vegetable farm on Bents Basin Road, on Wilson’s orchard at Orangeville. She mowed lawns, and instructed learner drivers. She delivered papers for 38 years. But she is best known for her work for the council, first as Maintenance Worker for 5 and a half years. She planted the trees growing along Production Avenue, and after rain filled the potholes, issued with only truck and shovel. Apparently, the council was sad to see her go, particularly as they had to replace her with two men! After her knee injury from a car accident, the council asked her to manage Warragamba Tip, which she did for 12 years. She introduced an extensive recycling program. There she met Sisters Diodema and Humilita, who became life-long friends. Phyllis was also well known for her volunteer work with Silverdale Progress Association. Phyllis was a member of All Saints Church of England Silverdale since she was 18, when walking home one day she realised she needed Jesus as her leader. Her mother Florence had a great bible knowledge, but both Merv and her father thought church was a load of ‘hooey’. Her regular Sunday church was at St Paul’s Warragamba. Up until the end she put her trust in Jesus because ‘Who else do we have?’ Into her mid 80s, Phyllis still drove her little white Toyota van locally shopping or visiting, attended church twice a week, and was active in keeping up with her community and friends. When she wasn’t out she was on the phone, reading the paper, or doing long stitch in front of her TV and wood fire. She loved going to the Thursday Salvation Army ladies fellowship in Penrith with Thelma (‘the Salies were good to my mum’), coming to Wednesday church, and sitting at the Town Hall on Saturday to talk to Judy Hannan. She was always in attendance at local events. In February 2012, Phyllis elected to have a hernia operation, but had a stroke during recovery, paralysing her left arm and leg. She moved to Camden Nursing Home, but her appetite and weight markedly declined, though her mind was still strong until the last few weeks. She died on Tuesday morning, 22 January 2013. Sadly, Phyllis buried her daughter Elizabeth in 1996, her husband Merv two years later, and her son David in 2010. She is survived by Elizabeth’s children: Elly-May, Russel, Timothy, Roger, Tabatha, and her great-grand children, Damien and Jake, Dylan and Kirsty, and Lilly and Cohen. She is to be buried on Wednesday January 30 at St Paul’s Anglican Chuch Cobbity, with Merv and next to her sons David and William. Matt Olliffe Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.

New Era for Fernhill The historic Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa has been sold for more than $50 million to Simon and Brenda Tripp with their daughters Jessica, 14, and Samantha, 18. The beautiful Georgian house features a ballroom and extensive cellars and the 654ha property has 3 other homes, a private lake, stables and a racecourse. It was established by William Cox in 1842 for his son Edward and was previously owned for over 30 years by Warren Anderson. The Tripp family have some ambitious plans for the property to make it a world class equestrian centre and both daughters are accomplished riders who have represented NSW Australia in show jumping. The property will also be used as a function centre for weddings and events. A ‘Tough Mudder’ athletic endurance event is already planned for April and there are a wide range of ideas being looked at to make Fernhill a viable business and benefit the local community.

BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE
Pastor Uel • Warragamba Baptist Church • Phone: 4774 1476 • Web: www.warragambabaptist.net • Sunday Morning Service at 9.30am
Time to Make a Difference
“And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Once more we begin a new year. Teachers and pupils are returning to school to commence the new school year. In other parts of the country people are having to contend with fires, and floods, and
tragedy. The year that lies ahead is a very special one as the Australian people go to the polls in September to elect a new government. It’s time for you and me to make a difference all right but a spiritual difference. What preparations can we enter into to make a difference as we commence a new calendar year? Was there ever a time in history that needed a people prepared as we do now? The world is in a desperate state, searching for new
moorings, feeling after a new order. But without God no new order will be found. What this world needs more than anything is a “people prepare”. Look again at this remarkable statement in this passage. “And he will go on before the Lord….to make ready a people prepared for the Lord”. A people prepared, men and women like John the Baptist, who prepared himself spiritually and then went out to prepare others to know God. There is no more important question that can be asked by each person who knows Jesus Christ as personal Saviour, as we begin the New Year, Am I spiritually fit for what lies ahead? For we do not know what one day brings forth. Am I willing to be part of “a people prepared” Loving Heavenly Father and my God as we commence a new year’s endeavour, I see and sense the significance of the days that lie ahead. Prepare me, along with others, so that I am ready to fulfil your purposes for this desperate needy world I live in. Pastor Uel

Local Showjumper Represents Australia in Mexico Local Mulgoa resident, Jessica Tripp (aged 14), recently received confirmation that she qualified to represent Australia in Equestrian Showjumping at the Junior World Cup in Mexico in January 2013 – only the 3rd time an Australian youth has qualified for this prestigious event. She qualified after winning the Australian Gold Tour at the Australian Youth Showjumping Championships held over 3 days in Camden in September. After four rounds of competition, Jess was the only rider to successfully complete all four rounds without incurring any penalties. During the year, over 600 riders in 30 countries jump identical courses in an attempt to qualify for the final, which is to be held in Mexico at the end of January. Worldwide results
are collated and each rider is ranked according to penalties incurred and time taken. The top 16 riders qualify to compete at the final. Jessica is only the third rider ever to qualify from Australia. Other countries to be represented in Mexico include France, Russia, Brazil, Luxembourg, United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Venezuela and New Zealand. Last year Jessica represented Australia in Mauritius where she won a Silver medal, and in 2010 she was selected to compete at the FEI International Children's Jumping Competition in Bogota, Columbia.
New Fence for Luddenham Showground Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP met with Mr Rob Heffernan, President of the Luddenham Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society last month to announce a $5000 grant for a new fence for the main arena at Luddenham Showground. Mrs Davies said the funding was part of the Government’s $16.9m Public Reserves Management Fund Program. Mr Heffernan said that the funding was great news for the Luddenham Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society “I was so excited to hear that we had been successful in our grant application- the main arena really needs a new fence and it would have been quite difficult to achieve without this help from the State Government” Mr Heffernan said.

Good Luck Margaret! Last month, family and friends gathered at The Peppercorn Café in Mulgoa to celebrate Margaret Stepniewski’s retirement. The “surprise” party was organised by Margaret’s daughter Eleanor in coordination with many local friends and family members. The event was a wonderful celebration of Margaret’s working life and valuable contribution to the local community. Margaret was responsible for starting the Mulgoa Valley Gazette, fifteen years ago in 1998. In 2001, it became the Mulgoa Valley & Warradale Gazette, the publication it is known as today. Throughout Margaret’s active role in the community, she has helped to re-open the Warragamba Girl Guides after it had been closed for 12 months, been involved with the Mulgoa Landcare Group, the Mulgoa Progress Association and the Mulgoa Hall Committee. Margaret assisted the Mulgoa Seniors and organised Christmas socials for several years. Through St Thomas’ Church, she also served on the parish council and taught both Sunday School and Scripture. In 2006, Penrith Council recognised Margaret on the Wall of Achievement for Community Services. From everyone in and around Mulgoa Valley and Warradale, we would like to wish you a big thank you and best wishes in the future Margaret!

Gow Park Upgrades Gow Park, Mulgoa is currently undergoing installation of a new irrigation system. The system is fully automated and will irrigate both playing fields. The system will be connected to a bore that was previously installed by Council, providing an ongoing, sustainable source of water to irrigate the field. The cost of the project is $86, 000 with the successful contractor being engaged following a competitive quotation process. The installation of this system will significantly improve the quality of the turf on the playing surface at Gow Park, enabling the fields to tolerate a higher level of use and improving opportunities for the local community to participate in sport and recreational activities. The project has been funded through the S94 – Older Areas program.

Little Red Attracts Big Crowds Families flocked to Mamre House in the January school holidays to witness the ridiculous antics of Little Red Riding Hood, her brother Blue, Granny and of course Wolfgang the Wolf. This wacky version of the children’s classic tale was written by Glenmore Park resident Gabrielle DeCelis. With witty rhymes, silly songs and twisted humour LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD entertained children and adults alike in the beautiful gardens of Mamre House. One patron said, “the wit and pace of the script was simply brilliant and a joy to watch,” and “Little Red Riding Hood certainly eclipsed the character and quirk you would find in any big smoke production.” If you missed the January season of Little Red Riding Hood at Mamre House don’t despair. You can catch all the zany fun in the gardens of the Norman Lindsay Gallery in Faulconbridge during the Easter school holidays! For more information visit www.actingfactory.com

The resolutions we make at the start of each New Year indicate that we have a sense that there is a better version of ourselves and our life to be had. .. a bit like that Bupa advert! Whether our intentions for the year have to do with work, parenting, fitness, relationships, or any other areas of our life, setting goals is an integral piece to making change. But often times when we do this we are rigid, it has to be a certain way or else we haven’t achieved success. But this rigidity only backfires on us. When we don’t go through with our goals, the thought arises, “I’ve failed once again,” leading to a sense of sluggishness and the next thought, “What’s the point, this change is too hard! *Experts suggest there’s another way. The three steps we can take to make our intentions come alive are: 1. Expect to stray – This is just a fact of life that sometimes we refuse to own up to. We’ll almost always wander with the goals we make. Maybe we commit to exercise and then we get sick or we set a path for meditation and our minds get caught up in daily busyness while days go by without practice. One scenario or another of your behaviour wandering is going to happen, so now step #2. 2. Don’t Judge – Your behaviour wandering is not a good or bad thing, it’s just the natural course of someone trying to make a change. Simply notice that you’ve wandered and where you wandered to so you can burn it into your memory and notice it sooner the next time. If judgments do arise, “I can never do this or what was I thinking,” simply note them just like you noted
your wandering behaviour and move to step #3. 3. Refocus – Gently bring yourself back to the plan you had created or see if it needs revisions. It’s important to keep an open heart and be gentle with yourself as you practice changing habits; it’s not going to be perfect, so the question is can we accept the reality of our imperfections? If you’re perfect, you’re not human. There’s no need to wish you good luck, because making change is not about luck, it’s about having a good strategy of being kind and compassionate with yourself as you continue to wander off and gently guide yourself back to the object of focus. *adapted from PsychCentralNewsletter,psychcentral.com * Linda Cassell - Assoc MAPS, Master of Counselling, Psychology Honours (BASS) - is a psychologist and counsellor in private practice in Luddenham.

INTRODUCING...
Kim of Crystal Clarity & Harmony Hello my name is Kim of Crystal Clarity & Harmony. My passion is to provide insight into people’s lives, to help them find understanding, healing and happiness in ‘The Self’ in any way I can. It may be said that illness comes from those imbalances within our Chakras from emotions or life situations that are left to fester. This is where Reiki and Crystal Light Healing will be of benefit, as it relieves anxiety, tiredness, depression plus many more conditions and balances, clears and removes blockages by getting to the source of the issues causing illness or stress. Reiki is an ancient Japanese hands-on healing technique. Crystal Healing includes the placement of crystals on or next to the body and Chakras to activate healing and change on a DNA level. Both treatments are effective and gentle, suitable for everyone and can be given via direct or distance healing. We all have different things to learn or to overcome, let this be the year you find peace, healing and happiness. If you feel I can help you in any way or if you wish to hold a reading party, please contact me on 0416 215531 or email: alal@hotmail.com.au. Blessings Kim. www.mulgoagazette.com.au

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph: 0409 986 121 Email: Narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au Blog: http://oranaplaygroup.wordpress.com
Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. you felt when certain things were said; what were your intentions When I address parents at the beginning of every parent group, I start by saying that they have probably started the group to find out how to fix their child’s “problem” behaviour, and they will leave the course thinking about how much they need to change their own behaviour, parenting and otherwise. If your children are yelling at each other, where do they see and hear yelling? Where do your children learn: to be kind; to persist at a task; to stay and sort things out rather than walk off in a huff; to say please and thank you? “YOU are what you teach your children.” – Magda Gerber Many people struggle with parenting because they have lots of ideas about what they didn’t like about their childhood, but they don’t quite know what else to do. Your parents were your role models, you learnt how to parent from them. The hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of interactions between you and your parent/s were stored in your procedural memory, and now parenting has become automatic. You say the same thing that your parent/s did, you respond in the same way, and you say to yourself “I’m starting to sound like my mother/father”. This may displease, upset, or concern you. You want to be different, and that’s the first step in becoming a “reflective parent’. Reflective parenting is not easy, it is really hard work, but it is worthwhile. It is stopping and thinking before you react to your children, thinking about how your child may be feeling and thinking (empathy), and thinking about what may have gone wrong in the interaction with your child and resolve to do better next time. It means pulling apart the interaction: what you said; what she said; thinking about how she may have felt; how
and motivations; the point at where things went wrong and misunderstandings occurred; and what went well. This technique is grounded in the understanding that your child is a separate being with his/her own attitudes, beliefs, thoughts, intentions, desires, and motivations. How do we become really good role models for our kids when our own role models weren’t so great growing up? Sheer will power. Getting some therapy when it’s needed. Some of the parents I work with have had terrible childhoods. These parents work really hard on becoming good role models for their kids by thinking every day in every way about how much they want to change for their children’s sake. Wanting to make themselves better so their kids can be better. They have developed reflective parenting as a way of life. When they stuff up, which they do (as we all do) they sit with their kids, and explain how they felt about the child’s behaviour (owning their own feelings, not blaming the child), they apologise (sincerely), and they engage in a dialogue about how they can do better next time. This is such good stuff, transformational stuff, the stuff that changes the lives of children and future generations. It takes a lot of courage to get past old wounds, face up to where you are going wrong, and learn new ways of knowing, being, and doing. Parenting is always a work in progress. “Who we are and how we engage with the world are much stronger predictors of how our children will do than what we know about parenting. If we want to teach our children to dare greatly in this “never enough” culture, the question isn’t so much “Are you parenting the right way?” as it is: “Are you the adult that you want your child to grow up to be?”.” – Brene Brown

Exercise Boosts Brainpower! Not only does exercise improve your body, it helps your mental function. Exercise increases energy levels and increases serotonin in the brain, which leads to improved mental clarity. All that makes for a more productive day. Improved productivity not only makes you a better worker, it makes things better for everyone in the workplace. Companies with less wasted work hours and less sick time end up with lower health care costs– and an improved bottom line!

Come and Try BMX BMX Australia in conjunction with the State Associations and Member clubs will be holding a Free Come and Try Day this February. Kids and their parents can head down to their local club and see what BMX Racing is all about. Clubs will have clinics that the kids can join in for free and learn the basics of BMX Racing. Come and try for FREE at Penrith Panthers BMX Club on SUNDAY 24TH FEBRUARY (see ad below). BMX is a fast paced exciting sport. Riders sprint around a dirt track 300-400 meters long, with jumps and turns. In 2008 BMX made it’s Olympic debut in Beijing. Now is a great time to get involved in BMX so get on your bike and head to your local track to experience first hand the speed and excitement. We have riders ranging in age from 4 years old to 64 years of age. Riders of all ages, genders and riding abilities can take part in BMX. It offers a great alternative to those sports traditionally offered to kids, full of excitement and FUN! For attending the day kids will receive a showbag containing a hat, BMX DVD, stickers and other products and a certificate and have the chance to win a Redline racing bike.

$1000 Guide Dog Donation Happy New Year from the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital! Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2012 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos. Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $1000 for The Guide Dogs NSW. We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!!
may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Valentine’s Day. Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. And distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment.
Valentine’s Day – Beware of Chocolate! We all love our pets and with Valentine’s Day coming up, please be aware of chocolate toxicity in pets. You may buy your beloved furry friend a Valentine’s gift that is safe, however if you are lucky enough to receive a box of chocolates, then your pet may find your secret stash and help themselves. Chocolate is toxic to pets. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump
