Coal Seam Gas Concern Local residents are shocked to find out that CSG mining is planned in the Warragamba catchment. At the recent meeting in Warragamba, spokesperson Nadene Seisun said “You are not even allowed to walk in the area to protect the quality of Sydney’s drinking water. CSG poses enormous risk to water, food, communities and the environment and the Government is not stopping it. Locals want to know who is monitoring what is happening in the catchment.” see page 9

Hans lived in Mulgoa for 38 years and has died suddenly. He was well known for his cheerful and friendly personality and for delivering the Sunday papers. Long time friend Wally said “He made a good impression on everyone he met and had an amazing attitude towards his health problems which didn’t stop him doing what he could”. He is sadly missed by all his family and many friends. He leaves behind his parents, his brother, his daughters and grandchildren.

Back in time at Warragamba Town Hall On 14 April, Warragamba took a step back in time when they held the Warragamba Debutante Ball at the local Town Hall. The evening was organised by Lisa Doolan for the Netball Club. Councillors Judith Hannan and Simon Landow and their partners attended the evening along with many well dressed locals. “Once again our Warragamba community has done Wollondilly proud. The ladies and their partners looked stunning, dressed in ball gowns and suits. It was a real privilege to be involved,” said Cr Hannan. “The Ball included the girls and their partners taking part in traditional dances, which they learned prior to the evening. It may have been a challenge but they danced beautifully,” she said “I would like to congratulate the organisers of the Ball, Lisa Doolan, Rob Wilson, Susie Deery, Lynette Lewis, Tina Thorpe and many others and thank them their hard work before and on the night,” Cr Hannan “It was also great to see the Warragamba Town Hall being used in this way. Debutante Balls used to be held annually in Warragamba, and it is great to see their reemergence. The organising group is hoping to hold this new event on a regular basis,” she said. “I’m also pleased to say that Wollondilly Shire Council’s Community Grants Scheme assisted with some funding for the Ball,” said Cr Hannan.

Married Priests & the Bible Recent events have raised the issue of the marriage of priests. I present some facts to the general public to assist them in their thinking. First, the word 'priest' is an English word that developed as a contraction of the Greek and Latin word, 'presbyter' (Titus 1:6). Through usage over the centuries ‘presbyter’ was shortened first to 'prester' then to 'priest'. (OED) That ‘presbyter’ = ‘priest’ is shown by the fact that the ‘presbytery’ is the house in which the parish priest lives. Second, in the New Testament, ‘presbyters’ and ‘bishops’ were married. In Titus 1:5-6, Paul says that Titus is to 'ordain priests in every city' who are 'the husband of one wife, having faithful children' (Douay-Rheims). New Testament 'priests' or 'presbyters' were almost always married. So were New Testament ‘bishops’. A ‘bishop’ must be 'the husband of one wife' (1 Timothy 3:1-2 Douay-Rheims). In the New Testament, it seems that ‘bishop’ and ‘presbyter’ were two names for the one office. Third, the Apostle Peter, said by the Roman Catholic Church to be the first Pope, had a wife, as did other
apostles. Paul says that he himself and Barnabas have ‘every right to be accompanied by a Christian wife, like the other apostles, like the brothers of the Lord, and like Cephas (= Simon Peter)’ (1 Corinthians 9:5-6 New Jerusalem Bible). The Roman Catholic commentator Daniel Harrington says that Peter was married and his wife went along with him on his missionary travels (1 Corinthians: Sacra Pagina, 336). Fourth, the Apostle Paul was single, and says that being single is better, though being married is good (1 Corinthians 7:38). However, Paul asserted his right that he himself and Barnabas could be married and have a believing wife financially supported by the church, if they decided to do this, just as Jesus' brothers, the other Apostles, and Peter (1 Corinthians 9:5-6). Paul was unmarried, which from the perspective of the new creation is better (1 Corinthians 7). But Peter and the other apostles were married, which from the perspective of this creation is better (Genesis 2:18-25). God said it was not good for the man to be alone. Fifth, Paul says that it is 'the doctrine of devils' and of those who 'depart from the faith' that 'forbid people from marrying' (1 Timothy 4:1-3
Douay-Rheims). These are the bible reasons why Protestant churches, including the Anglican Church, allow their ministers to be married. 'Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, are not commanded by God's Law, either to vow the estate of single life, or to abstain from marriage: therefore it is lawful for them, as for all other Christian men, to marry at their own discretion, as they shall judge the same to serve better for godliness' (Article 32 of the 39 Articles of Religion). Matt Olliffe Minister, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa
Glenmore Park Priest’s marriage Many of you will have already heard about the dramatic resignation of Father Kevin Lee from the Padro Pio Catholic parish church in Glenmore Park. Kevin was a very popular priest and made the announcement on television that he had found love and got married a year ago, a huge shock of his parishioners and the Catholic Church. Kevin wrote a regular column in the Glenmore Gazette and you can read his final message to the community at www.glenmoregazette.com.au.

The School P&C was awarded $30,000 to remove the concrete cricket pitch, level the sports field, install an irrigation system and returf the sports field. P&C President, Jody Smith said the school was very grateful for the grant as without it the project couldn't be done for another 3-4 years. "The field has been a mess for as long as I can remember, the P&C have been saving money for the last few years" Ms Smith said. Budget provision for Airport study protest Wollondilly Mayor Cr Col Mitchell has responded to the Federal Government’s Budget announcement that it is commencing a detailed study into the proposed Wilton Airport. “In a constrained economic environment, where a number of important programs have been deferred or shelved altogether, I have concerns that substantial funds have been earmarked for an airport proposal that is so flawed”, said Cr Mitchell. “A second Sydney airport at Wilton would have potentially disastrous impacts on some of Sydney’s most sensitive and important water catchments”, added Cr Mitchell. Warragamba Worried About Coal Seam Gas A Community meeting, held by Stop CSG Sydney Water Catchment, in Warragamba on Tuesday night brought around 50 local residents to hear about coal seam gas (CSG) drilling in the Warragamba catchment. Stop CSG Sydney Water Catchment has been formed to stop coal seam gas in Sydney’s drinking water catchment. They are campaigning the Government for; • A ban on CSG mining activities in Sydney’s drinking water catchment; • A Royal Commission into all impacts of CSG mining; • A moratorium on CSG minng until the outcome of the Royal Commission; • A ban on the extraction technique known as hydraulic fracturing. Spokespersons Nadene Seisun and Brett Cottee spoke about the process of coal seam gas drilling and the impact it is having on residents
in communities where CSG production has already begun. Jeremy Buckingham, Greens MP, spoke about the laws and the protections available under these laws. He said that even if you
consider the risk to be low, the consequences of the activity are very high. Stop CSG Sydney Water Catchment can be contacted on 0438 782 449 or 0439 367 643. See www.stopCSGsydneywatercatchment.org.au The next meeting will be held on the first Tuesday 5th June at Oakdale Workers Club starting at 7pm. There will be another meeting in Warragamba soon - watch out for details or contact Nadene 0423 821 650 or Greg Seisun 0418 979 987.
Shafted’s Breakfast Rally in the Park At least 200 people met to add their voices to the protest about the proposed exhaust shaft at Thirlmere. The crowd was informed by the Shafted Committee on the latest information about the proposal and entertained by Greg Windred providing a musical backdrop to the morning. The Shafted Committee answered questions including Xstrata’s preference to seek State approval rather than councils approval thus sidelining the Wollondilly community. Mr Jai Rowell MP has assured the Committee the planning system has been improved since the previous government. As the application will be assessed by the State Government, it is important to let Mr Rowell know of your concerns about the shaft. The Breakfast was also attended by Member for Wollondilly, Mr Jai Rowell, Mayor Col Mitchell and Councillors Robert Khan and Michael Banasik who have thrown their full support behind the Shafted Committee in opposition to the exhaust shaft being located at Innes Street, Thirlmere.

Wollondilly Mayor on Airport In a further response to the Federal Government’s recently announced intention to build a second Sydney airport at Wilton, Wollondilly Mayor Clr Colin Mitchell has written to Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese rejecting the proposal. “I have taken the opportunity to point out to the Minister that first the Howard Coalition Government, and then the subsequent Rudd and Gillard Labor Governments, all responded to valid community objections by rejecting the idea of a second airport atBadgerys Creek, or elsewhere within the Sydney basin – including Wilton”, said Clr Mitchell. Clr Mitchell pointed out to the Minister that the Badgerys Creek site had been rejected as environmentallyunsuitable, and that any site at Wilton would be even more unsuitable on environmental grounds alone.
“Environmental issues aside – and issues like water quality are critically important – I have pointed out to the Minister that to propose an airport more than 80 kilometers from the Sydney CBD, with minimal supporting ground transport infrastructure, flies in the face of international commercial experience”, said Clr Mitchell. “I pointed out to Minister Albanese that whatever short term political gain might be seen to come from an airport at Wilton, that very questionable gain could well come at a great and ongoing cost to Australian taxpayers”, added Clr Mitchell. Also that his Department is in the process of completing a detailed and expensive study into the implementation of high speed rail along Australia’s east coast.” “A “quick fix” second airport at Wilton is not the solution to Sydney’s future transport needs”, Clr Mitchell concluded.
Letter to the editor for publication I can’t begin to describe how disappointed I am that journalists and editors who know full well of what massive negative impacts and incredible dangers an airport at Badgerys Creek would have on the environment and the communities they publish too, have either remained utterly silent on reporting this, or even worse, published only pro airport propaganda, as we have all seen so clearly in the recent weeks. Letters detailing opposition sent to them remain unpublished, except for the independent papers who deserve to be thanked and congratulated for their integrity and honesty. What control is being excerpted over the Cumberland and Fairfax editors then? Likewise, politicians who have been on regular record in the media in the past, noted in Government Hansard, and spoken in public forums often as a platform election issue, as being totally opposed to any airport at Badgerys Creek, are now completely silent. Why? There is no doubt what-so-ever, that any airport at Badgerys Creek is completely unacceptable, as is any new airport within the Sydney basin. Clearly, there have been a number of people, including those involved with the recently released shockingly biased and factually deficient "taskforce report" who are in breach of their duty of care, even to themselves and their own families. Perhaps in reply to this letter, OUR representatives Minister’s Bradbury and Bowen, and MP’s Chris Hayes and Louise Markus (and others) would care to explain what is happening here? Peter Cork, Woodford Editors note: yes we did publish his last letter.

carnival, with many of our students going on to represent our school at the district carnivals. The primary children continued their fine tradition through their participation in the soccer gala day round robin at St Marys. Teams of boys, girls and mixed groups played a noncompetitive round of games against other schools from the Penrith and St Mary’s districts. “It was exciting and exhausting, but I enjoyed my day,” said Brad. “We may not have won every round, but we sure worked hard,” said Josh. Both the boys said they can’t wait for the next gala day and that they were “ready for action!” The next gala day will be held later this term at Jamison Park in Penrith.
