Welcome to the October edition of your community news. If you’re anything like me, the warmer weather has urged me to spend some more time outside, enjoying the beautiful sunshine. The onset of spring has also found me in de-clutter mode. Clearing out the cupboards, recycling and donating unused items to charities. I experience a real sense of satisfaction when I spring clean and am also very thankful for the scheduled ‘council collection’ services that are available to us all. This edition provides you with a focus on all things designed to keep you in fine form, both inside and out! If you’re looking for something deliciously tempting for your next gathering, check out our recipe this month, on page 9. It’s sure to tickle your taste buds! We have introduced a regular feature by Family Worker Narelle, this month she outlines some thought provoking information on ‘Children and Transitions’. As we all know, October is the month of DamFest! This edition is not short of information relating to all the exciting things in store on this one spectacular day! As with previous years, it has been confirmed that the Dam wall will be made available for pedestrian access. If you haven’t yet walked the wall; don’t miss your opportunity this year! Read more information on page 3. Grab yourself a cuppa and enjoy this month’s local news, remember ‘Until further notice, celebrate EVERYTHING’. WE ARE HERE

Rules of Fair Fighting In marriage and our homes, arguments, quarrels and fights are bound to happen. We all fall short in one way or the other. Men and women often think so different about things. Throw in work stress, the chaos of kids, managing in-laws, pressures to do with sickness or sadness, and it's a miracle we all don't fight more! So how do we manage these disagreements that are a normal part of life? We need some rules of fair fighting. 1. No Museum Pieces: 'In 1963, you ...' This doesn't really help you work out the current issue. We have to forgive and let go of the past. 2. No Generalizing: 'You're a slob! You always throw your undies on the floor, and you never care about a tidy house'. A focus on specific events is more helpful: 'This morning you left your undies on the floor. Could you please put them...' 3. No Abuse: Physical violence or verbal name calling are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. 'Husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies' (Ephesians 5:28). 'Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up' (Ephesians 4:29 NIV). 4. Time Out Not Walk Outs: Sometimes things get too heated. It's too late at night, or you are too stressed, and it's not a good time to try and work difficult stuff. Ask for a time out and make a time later to talk it over. Then go for a walk or get the sleep you need to think straight. But an unexplained walk out is manipulative and counter-productive.

5. 'I see' and' 'I feel' statements: One reason we sometimes can't communicate is blaming and defensiveness. A way of avoiding this is owning our feelings. 'What I see is this.. and when I see this I feel ....'. 6. 'Reflective listening': Someone knows we've heard them when we can articulate their feelings back to them. 'So what you are saying is.... is that right?' 'Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry' (James 1:19 NIV). 7. A sincere apology is powerful to bring healing. But remember, an apology is not the end of the matter, but the beginning. The one saying sorry needs to give time to the wronged party, so that they can offer forgiveness in their time. 8. Forgive. Jesus taught us 'forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us'. As much as we forgive others, Jesus will forgive us. (Matthew 6:12,14-15) Sometimes we need help to work through a more settled problem. In such a case, trained counsellors can help. It is a worthy investment.

Rotary’s Shelterbox Scheme ShelterBox was founded by Tom Henderson, a Rotarian and former Royal Navy search and rescue diver. He saw that the aid response to most disasters was in the form of food and medicine to help people survive the immediate aftermath. Little or no assistance was given in terms of proper shelter to help them through the first few days, weeks and months as they tried to rebuild their lives. ShelterBox was launched to fill that void. In 1999, Tom started researching the idea, sourcing equipment and twisting arms to get the project off the ground. His persistence paid off in April 2000 when ShelterBox was launched and the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall adopted it as its millennium project. Little did they know that it would become the largest Rotary club project in the world, with affiliates in eight countries? Rotary instantly respond to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each box supplies an extended family with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value. The cost of a box is $1,000, including delivery direct to those who need it. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organisations, in-
ternational aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide. Since its inception in 2000, ShelterBox has firmly established itself at the forefront of international disaster relief on every continent. Some samples of past donations are listed below. 1) Flash flooding in southern Russia in early July has resulted in 150 shelterboxes & 50 tents being distributed to the most vulnerable families giving them the right to dignity while they rebuild their damaged homes. 2) Heavy rains resulted in a large landslide in eastern Uganda at the end of June, sweeping away three villages and leaving hundreds of families homeless – a total of 115 shelterboxes were distributed to those in need. 3) In March ShelterBox responded to two separate disasters in Peru. Heavy rains triggered landslides that caused widespread damage in a remote mountainous region, whilst in northern Peru, unusually heavy rains led to extensive flooding. In July ShelterBox sent a monitoring and evaluation team back to these regions to assess the situation three months on. They found 88% of the tents initially distributed were still inhabited, with some beneficiaries having relocated their tents back to their villages while they repair their homes and were using the tools included in the boxes to rebuild their homes If you would like to know more about Rotary and their various programs, contact Jan Bradley from the Rotary Club of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley 0428 289 919.

INSIDE OUT With a Cherry on top!
What’s Cooking?
Cherries are well known as the queen of antioxidants. John Estival, Chef at Hopewood Health Retreat provides his favourite cherry recipe. Enjoy!
Cherry and Yogurt Parfait Ingredients 500gr cherries (pitted) 100gr honey 200gr plain yogurt 1 tsp vanilla extract 100gr dessicated coconut (roasted) Method 1. Stew cherries with honey for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove half of the cherries and let cool. Puree other half in food processor. 2. Mix almond meal with yogurt and vanilla in food processor until smooth, add cherries and blend for another minute or until smooth. 3. In a champagne glass; start with cherry puree then top with yogurt and cherry mix. 4. Leave in refrigerator for 1 hour. Before serving, garnish with coconut and a wedge of lime. This can be done with just about any fruit. Would you like your recipe to appear in the next edition of the Mulgoa Valley & Warradale Gazette? Email your favourite recipe to: editor@districtgazette.com.au
Sweet, juicy cherries are a spring and summer favourite among many Australians. First imported in 1878 to Young, now known as Australia’s cherry growing capital, these small stone fruits have remarkable health benefits as well as being absolutely delicious. Packed with antioxidants and vitamins B and C, betacarotene, biotin, boron, iron, manganese, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, fiber and carbohydrates; cherries provide an excellent boost to your immune system, which helps to combat all kinds of illnesses. They are also a rich source of flavonoids, which the body uses to protect itself against disease. Cherries not only help in protecting our bodies against illness, they can also help protect our joints and bones through their anti-inflammatory qualities. They can help fight joint, ligament, tendon and muscle pain, and can help protect our joints and bones from serious damage. Cherries also contain powerful compounds that block cancerous enzymes from forming, and selenium which destroy free radicals. Few people know that this delicious fruit also contains large amounts of melatonin, which can help you get a good night’s sleep, and will lessen the effects of jetlag. Cherries are catagorised into two different flavours, sweet, and sour. They are delicious eaten fresh, or can easily be juiced, preserved, caned, candied, marinated in liquor, turned into jam or included in sauces – the ideas are endless! For best taste, store cherries in your fridge for only up to 4 days as they are highly perishable. Try adding cherries to your fruit salad, ice cream, pies or tarts to really boost the flavour. INSIDE OUT Psychology WORKS 4 All
Caring for your Inner Health
Local residents now have their own local counselling psychologist to help out with life’s inevitable challenges. Linda Cassell has opened her practice – Psychology WORKS 4 ALL – at 73 Campbell Street in Luddenham (between the Catholic school and Schoolies before-and-after-school care centre). Linda’s eclectic background as a former professional tennis player, Good Samaritan nun and disabilities service manager helps her relate to people of all ages, cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. With 15 years’ counselling experience, the board-registered psychologist and Member of the Australian Psychological Society is well qualified to provide a full complement of upto-date, evidence-based interventions for a wide range of difficulties and needs. Linda, who lives in Luddenham, says she saw a gaping need for her services in the local area.“I’m aware of the lack of options for local residents needing support with mental health issues and other challenges,” Linda says. “Life has a way of throwing us curveballs and sometimes you just need a safe, empathic, understanding person who can listen without judgment and help you tap into your own wisdom or develop new skills and strategies to function better and prevent problems escalating.” Originally from Brisbane, Linda has faced her own share of grief and distress, including losing her 18-year-old brother to suicide in 1996. “I know how difficult it can be to take that first step and admit you need help – I’ve been there. We need each other to become the people we were created to be,” Linda says. “Private practice gives me a chance to draw on my life experience and professional expertise to add what I can to improve the quality of life for people in our community.” While working alongside Mother Theresa for several months in India during her 15 years as a nun, she saw first-hand the suffering that results from poverty. To help ensure access to all, Linda offers Medicare and health fund rebates for GPreferrals as well as a home-visit service to those who are isolated and cannot easily attend her rooms.
Her approach is tailored to meet each person’s unique needs and draws on Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy and Counselling. Linda works with children, adolescents, adults, couples, families and groups to help with issues including stress, trauma, relationship difficulties, pain and illness, fears and phobias, grief and loss, depression and anxiety, addictions, parenting, job or sports performance, eating disorders, spiritual and existential crises, and personal growth. See Linda’s advertisement in our Business Directory, listed under Counselling & Psychology.

PARENTS CORNER Transitions A few years ago, at a Triple P group I was facilitating, were two Mums – good friends who lived near each other and had children the same age. They both had a question for me “why have our boys turned into ratbags?”. I checked their connection techniques, and their relationship building stuff like quality time, reading, mealtimes, bedtime, play. It all sounded great. “Wait a second, how old are your kids?” “Four and a half.” “Both going to school next year?” “Yes” “Doing school transition?” “Yes” “You’re talking to them about being “big boys” and how great school will be, and how they need to learn to do lots of stuff to get ready for school?” “Yes” “Are they really big boys? When they are in a crowd of people, adults and children, where everyone is standing, what can they see?” “Other people’s butts.” “Are they really going to be out there in the world alone, or are you going to help them along as much as you can?” “Help them of course.” “Then how honest are you being with them? How does it feel for your child to hear the messages you are giving them?” Regardless of whether your child goes to preschool or long daycare, school is a big transition in the life of a child, a young child. Five years old is not big. And school is scary for some kids. My youngest son was an angel until everyone - his parents,
long daycare teachers, local shopkeepers, random people on the street - started talking to him about going to school. He didn’t even have temper tantrums when he was two or three years old. But the fear and uncertainty about going to school tipped him over the edge. He would ask “Mum what are you going to do without me when I go to school?”. I knew his behaviour was related to fear. All mistaken behaviour is related to a fear of some kind when you peel away the layers. Children have lots of transitions in their lives – preschool, school, moving house, new babies, blended families, holidays, birthdays. I see a lot of mistaken behaviour in my kids when there is a birthday. Good stress is still stress. Our children require us to be gently honest with them, to acknowledge their feelings, to see things from their perspective, and to offer whatever help and support they need to make a smooth transition. They still need boundaries and limits around their mistaken behaviour. But we’re the big ones, and role modelling wisdom and kindness teaches kids how to be the same. Holy Family School News Term 3 has been an extremely busy term at Holy Family Primary, Luddenham, with many high- lights including Grandparents Day, Voice of Youth Speech competition, Stage 3 Camp to Canberra and the snow, Stage 1’s Excursion to the Zoo, Kinder’s Farm Incursion, First Holy Communion, Father Zvonimir’s 40th Anniversary of his ordination and many more events to celebrate community and learning. There were also outstanding achievements in the areas of the creative arts and sport. On Monday 3 September –, 35 students from Holy Family performed at the Primary Voices Choral Celebration at St Domenic’s College Penrith. Students from Our Lady of the Rosary Kellyville, Sacred Heart Westmead, St Patrick’s Blacktown, Mary Immaculate Quakers Hill, St Anthony’s Girraween, St Michael’s Blacktown, Holy Spirit St Clair and Holy Family Luddenham performed a number of songs and dance items in a combined choir. The students had been training over twenty weeks with tutors from the Australian Girl’s Choir (A3 Team) and in conjunction with the Parramatta Diocese Captivate program. In the area of sport, Holy Family also achieved some outstanding results this term. The school relay team, as well as a number of individual students competed at both the Zone and Diocesan level with two students further entered to compete at State level in Athletics on October 18th and 19th. The term was indeed busy and successful due to the work of the dedicated staff who continually work to provide so many varied learning opportunities for the students and work with parents who support Holy Family in all aspects of school life. There was a lot to celebrate over the term and Term 4 looks to be just as full and rewarding.

Clean Up - Change of Date The Council’s scheduled clean up has been rescheduled to commence on Monday 29th October 2012 NOT the 22nd October 2012 as previously advised in the Resident Waste Calendar. Please do not put any clean up material on the kerb before the 27th October. Council has changed the date to ensure the Warragamba Village looks its best for the festivities of DAMFEST. Council requests that you do not place any material out for clean up until after DAMFEST. It is hoped that this change in date does not cause inconvenience. Should you have any questions, please contact Council’s Waste Management Officer, Dan Meehan on 46778225 or at dan.meehan@wollondilly.nsw.gov.au
THE SPORTING LIFE Grasshopper Soccer A Grasshopper plague is coming to a suburb near you. Grasshopper Soccer is Australia’s number 1 soccer skills program for 2 to 12 year olds. Owners, Deb Saywell and Sue Rochford have been involved in kids sport and coached kids soccer for over 20 years. They saw a need for a soccer skills program that would give kids the opportunity to develop all their basic fundamental movement skills whilst developing and learning the fundamentals necessary to play soccer in a fun and enjoyable environment. They launched in May 2012 and have experienced enormous support from parents looking for a fun skills based program. The support has been overwhelming and as a result they are launching two new clinics in Term 4. Clinics run for 8 weeks during the school term. Using fun based games , children aged 2 to 5 learn the basics of soccer including shooting, dribbling and goalkeeping whilst kids aged 6 to 12 learn all the basics as well as focus on skill development and teamwork to become more confident in their ability if and when they play club soccer. Enrolments are now open for Term 4. Enrol by calling 0400 483 198 or visit their website www.grasshoppersoccer.com.au and choose your nearest location. Sports Trivia - September Answers 1. True.
