Christmas comes to South Circuit The quiet local street will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland, with four homes displaying their amazing display of lights and inflatables, special visits from Santa himself all whilst raising valuable funds for charity. “We started raising money for charity two years ago and have raised over $2,500. The charity we are supporting is Lights for Kids for the Sydney Children’s Hospital” said organiser Travis Carstens. Travis has been continually growing his Christmas display for the past seven years, particularly in the last three years since moving into Oran Park. This year, he has added more display items as well as interactive displays for kids to get their photos with. Santa will be making special trips from the North Pole, arriving on Saturday 2nd of December and coming every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night in December to get photos in his newly added chair. “I love seeing the happiness it brings to everyone that comes past. It’s also a great feeling knowing that we are collecting donations to help children who are sick at this time of year” Travis explained to the Oran Park Gazette. There’s no doubt that Travis certainly loves this time of year, organising this wonderful community event. "Rock On" These School Holidays!

You may be familiar with the rock craze that has taken Australian households by storm, where rocks are painted, decorated and placed in acceptable public areas and found by excited members of the community. What you may not know is that the NSW Rocks group was started by Macarthur resident Maddy Sen in May this year. “The group was started after reading about the WA Rocks group. It’s an excellent way for the family to spend time together. The thought of screen time being reduced, being creative and getting outdoors were all positives” said Maddy Sen. The group was initially going to be a local group. With so much interest in rock painting, it was soon opened State wide so that it was accessible to as many children and parents as possible, including those in rural and remote communities in New South

Wales. In just 6 short months, the NSW Rocks group now boasts over 15,000 members on Facebook. Members of NSW Rocks are from many communities throughout New South Wales who have come together to decorate rocks. They paint pictures and write inspiring words on rocks to share out in the community to brighten someone’s day. They also add the Facebook group name on the back of the rock. The decorated rocks are then placed in acceptable public areas with a picture posted and relevant information in the group. When someone plans on visiting parks or other public areas, they can search in the group by park name, suburb name or region to see if anything has been hidden in the area they are going to. If a rock is found, there is information on it to direct them to the NSW Rocks Facebook page. They post a picture, so the artist and the group can enjoy their find as much as they did and choose to re-hide or keep the rock. “It’s about spreading joy, exploring the community, discovering new places and revisiting old places that may have been forgotten about. Our plans are to continue to spread happiness, one painted rock at a time” beamed Maddy. Anyone interested in rock painting – hide and seek are welcomed to join at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ NSWROCKS/. Gather some rocks and painting supplies and get creative!  Decorated Christmas rocks | Image: Cassandra Sen

Crayon Smiles Have you ever wondered what you could do with those old broken crayons that hang around your home or art box that you know should go in the bin but can’t seem to throw them out? Well, we have the perfect solution for you and it will make you feel all warm and fuzzy too. The Iluka Project, run by local Gregory Hills resident Cassie Lee, is a wonderful initiative where old, broken and used crayons are melted down and remade into fun creative new ones and packaged up with a colouring book and given to sick children admitted into hospital, in particular, Westmead Children’s Hospital. The idea came about when Cassie’s daughter Iluka was playing with crayons. One of them broke and she wondered how many crayons get tossed just like this. During these times, with Illuka in and out of hospital due to being diagnosed with Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia, Cassie also watched other children battle their own illnesses. She decided that melting down the crayon stubs into novelty shapes like hearts, Lego and cars with some paper or colouring-in pages, would help make their day go quicker as well as bring a smile to their face and distract them from the real reason they were hospitalised. Iluka and Cassie would love for the community to help by sending used crayons and colouring books, which they cut up and distribute with the crayons. If you would like to donate your old crayons and help to continue this great cause, you can contact Cassie through their Facebook Page ‘The Iluka Project’.

OCD is an anxiety disorder comprised essentially of obsessions in the form of recurring uncontrollable questions/ doubts/impulses/images, and compulsions. These compulsions can be physical or mental acts that are usually performed to manage the distress arising out of the obsessions. How common is OCD? Obsessions and compulsions are quite common in the general population, with some studies reporting about 30 percent of people claim to have them. OCD however is only diagnosed when an individual’s obsessions and compulsions are severe enough that they cause significant distress or interfere with their daily life and ability to function. OCD is only found in 1.6-2.5% of the population. What causes OCD? OCD has found to be associated with hyperactivity in parts of the brain. Undergoing treatment that improves a patient’s symptoms generally also improves these brain abnormalities. OCD, at the same time, is a psychological condition that can be influenced by life experience. What psychological techniques are helpful in OCD? Generally the psychological strategy needs

www.oranparkgazette.com.au

to be tailored to the specific obsessions/ compulsions that one is experiencing. Common strategies include response prevention (including seeking reassurance for one’s doubts/questions), distraction techniques, acceptance of uncertainty in regards to being able to totally prove a doubt wrong, as well as reminding oneself of the harm caused by the obsessions. At the same time, OCD, from a psychological perspective is a signal that the mind is troubled by some deeper psychological stress – so attempts need to be made to identify that stress. Are medications useful? Certain medication groups have been found to be useful in managing OCD, with the most commonly used group being antidepressants. If the antidepressants are not working on their own, then certain additional medications can be tried in combination with antidepressants. The medication treatment of OCD is best managed by a psychiatrist, due to the complexities involved. What are the chances of getting better with treatment? Patients diagnosed with OCD respond very well to treatment and both psychotherapy and medication, when properly used, can substantially improve OCD symptoms in the majority of patients – up to 60-70%.

What Does Christmas Mean to You? Christmas is a special time and such a magical experience for children. As a parent, I’m often wondering what kids today really think Christmas is about. When asking my three-year-old, his response was simply “Santa and Presents”. Christmas to me is all about giving, family time and eating lots of yummy food and indulging without the guilt. We are slowly trying to teach our children that although it is about Santa and presents, for us it’s the giving back to others that is the most important, like volunteering, but for some Christmas means many other things. When I asked the question ‘What does Christmas mean to you?’ to our fellow Oran Park residents, I was surprised at the different responses and came to realise that there is no right or wrong answer, just simply a diverse way of looking at it. You may be religious, like local resident Smiline Briscilla who believes it’s all about Christ saying “Christ is the reason for the season. Celebrating his love for us and reminding us to love others”. You may also be like Laura Alarcon, who said “Christmas has lots of meanings, whether it's religious, the gifts or just the food. It's the time to be with family, friends and loved ones, quality time, a dinner, a drink and a chat. Don't forget the Christmas lights for the kids”. There is no doubt that December 25th is special for a lot of people. For one Oran Park resident, Jade Kazzi, she said “I used to love Christmas, now I feel I’m obligated to buy a whole lot of presents for other people. I find it more work rather than enjoyment”. We are sure Jade isn’t the only one that might feel this way, so we thought we would recommend some ideas to bring the spirit and magic back into your Christmas. 1. Start a tradition with your family. It could be a craft night, read a Christmas book throughout December, write a letter to Santa or introduce an Advent Calendar. 2. Do something Selfless. Donate a gift to one of the many local charity organisations or volunteer at a local event. 3. Be frivolous. Stick to a present giving rule like ‘something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read’. 4. Involve yourself in the magic. Attend local events like the Oran Park Christmas Carols. 5. Do something different. Change your Christmas day plans every year and make it exciting. Enjoy your Christmas, whatever your tradition or plans, bring back the magic, remember to stress less and smile more. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to writing more about our great community in 2018.  The most wonderful time of the year | Image: www.pixabay.com. Article: Renee Garcia

The Pudding of Christmas Past

Right. Cards posted. Gifts wrapped. Menu sorted. Wine rack loaded. By the time Christmas Eve arrives, most of us are pretty exhausted from all of the shopping and organising. But, wait, oops, who forgot the Christmas pudding? Good thing the shops are still open, so we can make a quick dash for those last-minute items. Historically speaking, the Christmas pud was a great source of holiday anxiety for the cook, as the traditional way to prepare this seasonal treat was anything but last minute. The dessert was introduced to Australia at the beginning of British colonisation. The batter is made with eggs, suet, breadcrumbs and dried fruits like raisins, currants, figs and almonds with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. The 19th century housewife would work months in advance to produce the perfect pud which involved seeding the fruit, grating the breadcrumbs, hand mixing the heavy batter and then wrapping in calico, muslin or cheesecloth. Then there were hours of boiling, which meant tending a fire in a fuel stove or under the laundry copper. Then there were the last few minutes of finger crossing on Christmas Day hoping all her hard work didn’t produce a crumbly, sticky or heavy mess. Later after the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme brought water to the desert, farmers in the Riverina were able to grow more citrus fruit which was preserved as candied peel and used in the puddings. Austrian port and sherry were being used by the 1950s for soaking the dried fruit in. Coins used to be placed in the batter and a year of luck bestowed on the lucky recipient, but when the currency changed in the 60s, testing found that the new coins turned green and made the pudding have a funny taste. Today, the Australian Mint sells coin packs with a mixture of vintage threepence and sixpence pieces, but recommends they are not baked into the pudding but ‘placed into warmed slices just prior to serving.’ These days, we don’t need a coin in our slice to realise how lucky we are to be able to purchase our Christmas Puddings.

from our family to yours, we wish you a

5 Easy Steps to Holiday Learning The Summer school holidays are a great opportunity for children to recharge the batteries, but for many parents of young children, there is a concern that some of the learning that took place throughout the year will be lost over the long break. It is true that children can regress during the Summer holidays, especially younger children who are just starting to grasp certain concepts and require further consolidation. Never fear, here are 5 simple tried and tested ways to encourage your children to keep learning throughout the break whilst also having fun: 1. Buy your children books for Christmas on topics they enjoy or better yet, visit the library every few weeks to restock with some new reading material. Read with them but also encourage them to read alone or to a stuffed toy for enjoyment. 2. Get your children involved in planning activities. Perhaps they could use the internet to search for fun things to do. Ask them to create a schedule of activities using the computer. They could even plan transport by looking up timetables and matching up activities and travel times. 3. Go on a day trip or two to a museum, wildlife park, art gallery or live performance. Take time to discuss things your children learned or enjoyed about the experience. 4. Encourage your children to keep a written diary or journal of their thoughts and feelings. If they are young, they may prefer to just write a sentence about what they did that day and draw a picture. 5. Give your children a small amount of money to manage as their ‘holiday budget’. Encourage them to plan their expenses, work out costs, change and keep track of money remaining. This is a great way to practice mathematical skills whilst encouraging a sense of independence. Remember, although it is important to keep progressing, it is equally important that children get to have some freedom to relax during the break, so they can be nice and fresh for the brand-new year of learning ahead. Have fun and enjoy the holidays! Reading aloud to a toy can help children practice their reading skills | Image: www.pexels.com. Article: Sara Drebber @ www.educatered.com.au

Slithering Start to Summer Forget about snakes on a plane, how about snakes in our backyard. With the warmer weather fast approaching, snake season is upon us and already we have seen many sightings and warnings about the snakes that are slithering around our local area. With a variety of snakes found living among us both venomous and harmless to humans, it is very common that you may come in contact with a snake while walking or doing general day to day activities. Although when sighting one you may become alarmed, but please remember that animals should be treated with care and respect. We thought we would contact the experts at Australian Snake Catchers and ask them if they have some tips for us on what we should do if we happen to find a snake in our path. 1. Stay calm and don’t over react or harm the snake. 2. Keep your children and pets away. 3. Keep your distance but keep an eye on where they travel. 4. Contact an experienced reptile/snake catcher who holds a relevant permit to come out and remove the snake. 5. Although this may sound silly, be sure that the snake is in fact real and not a rubber or toy one. This does happen quite a lot according to Freya from Australian Snake Catchers. Grants Open Defibrillators

For

Life

Saving

Member for Camden Chris Patterson is encouraging our local sports clubs to apply for co-funding for the NSW Government’s new Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program. “More than 2,500 Automatic External Defibrillators (AED’s) will be rolled out across the state over the next four years. “I encourage local sporting clubs to take this opportunity to apply for a grant to help fund an AED - which can be the difference between life and death,” Mr Patterson said. “The program will fund up to 50 per cent of the defibrillator cost, along with training and maintenance support.” Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the $4 million program will make sporting fields safer for thousands of players and spectators. “More than 33,000 Australians experience cardiac arrest every year, and the first eight minutes are critical to improving the likelihood of survival,” Mr Ayres said “Early access to CPR and defibrillation can influence survival rates by up to 75 percent”. The scheme is targeting community sports clubs, but applications from licensed sporting clubs and sports organisations associated with schools, churches universities, and councils will also be considered. Applications close 20 December 2017. For more information visit: sport.nsw.gov.au/clubs/grants

Young People Invited To Design Public Art Young people are invited to be involved in the concept design for two new public art murals in Narellan and Elderslie next year. After the success of two youth public art projects completed in Currans Hill and Harrington Park earlier this year, Council has allocated another $25,000 to develop new murals for other community spaces. The Camden Youth Council was involved in the identification and selection of both spaces which include the walls at the Narellan Library entrance and the Kirkham Skate Park. “We want to engage young people in the process of designing art that will feature in places that they have a connection with,” said Mayor Lara Symkowiak. “These murals will renew these community facilities and make them more welcoming and appealing to people of all ages,” Cr Symkowiak said. People aged 12-25 years, who live, work or study in the Camden area are welcome to join in the concept design workshops to be held in January. The focus will be on the Narellan Library front entrance (Queen Street) at 10am-1pm, Wednesday, 17 January in the Red Gum Room, upstairs at Narellan Library and the Kirkham Skate Park at 11.30am-2.30pm, Saturday 20 January at the Kirkham Skate Park. Young people can get involved in these workshops by visiting the Youth OutReach Programs page on Council’s website, www. camden.nsw.gov.au.

The guest speaker at our November Meeting was Richard Kinnon. He and his family run a tourist business in Longreach. Our club is planning a visit to Longreach in 2018 so there was great interest in his information and photos. Members of our club visited the Garvan Medical Research Institute in November and shared lunches and coffee mornings. There was a hat parade for Melbourne Cup Day. We will be having a Christmas celebration after our December meeting. The club has 108 members with room for more. It meets on the first Tuesday of each month (excluding January) at 10.00 am at NewLife Anglican Church, corner Central Avenue and Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park. If you would like more information about our club then contact the secretary: Helen Duhs at phduhs@gmail.com or 0412508828. Members on (Hat) Parade + Guest Speakers | Images Supplied

Christmas Foods That Are Dangerous For Your Dog We all love our pets. They are part of our family and we share everything with them, especially when it comes to food. The upcoming festive season comes with an abundance of indulgent foods and ingredients, including chocolates, candy canes, stuffing and nuts. Christmas is a fun time for the whole family, but not if your dog gets their paws on any of these foods. Resisting the temptation to share your food with your dogs may be hard—especially with that adorable stare—but some human foods can be toxic or even deadly to them. Chocolate How? Dogs are attracted to the smell and taste of chocolate, so it is not surprising that they choose to rummage through and open boxes of chocolate wrapped up under the tree or ornamental chocolate hanging off the tree. Why is it toxic? Dogs cannot process a component of chocolate called ‘theobromine’ as efficiently as in humans. How dangerous the chocolate is depends on the cocoa content—Dark chocolate and cocoa powder are the worst. If left untreated, your pet may show serious and potentially fatal signs such as seizures and heart problems. Onions And Garlic How? Stuffing, onion soup, gravy mix, uncooked, cooked or powdered garlic and onions. Why is it toxic? Eating onions trigger a destruction of the dog’s red blood cells, leading to a condition that causes serious abnormal signs such as weakness, depression, tiredness, pale

gums and excessive panting. Other Foods Other harmful foods your pet may encounter during Christmas include xylitol (found in sugar-free candy, gums, mints), grapes and macadamia nuts. What Should I Do? Remember, try not to leave any of these foods lying around, and if you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have, take them to your vet as soon as possible.

I would not like to be thought of as a whinger but the number of negative remarks about the police being on patrol in O/ Park (as I have a nephew at Rouse Hill in the force) I am glad to say they do a wonderful job. Pleased to see them and feel they need recognition even though it's their job. Speeding affects everyone we nearly lost a daughter many years ago through the stupidity of an eighteen yr old P plater, keep up the good work. Mrs Harold

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park NSW 2570

Christmas Light Darkness can be fun at Christmas time - it’s all about those thousands and thousands of little bulbs adorning houses and the slipping of bedtimes that mean little ones can watch them. Oh, and the inflatable Santa in your neighbours yard, and the reindeer that they defied death to put up on the sloping roof again this year! In that sense the darkness is welcome as it gives us a chance to enjoy the light. There is another darkness. A lack of light that speaks of the things that bring us heaviness and grief, sadness and sorrow. This darkness is profoundly unwelcome in our lives and yet leaks in each day through our news bulletins and facebook feeds. Christmas is good news precisely because someone stepped into the darkness of our death and sin and suffering. Though that newborn probably didn’t glow like an LED in the animal trough, years later He would stand and declare Himself to be the light of the world. In doing so, Jesus was showing that He alone fulfilled the promise of God made to His people 700 years earlier in these

famous words, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” This Christmas we’d love you to celebrate the good news of light coming into the world with us. You’re invited to join us for our family Christmas services at 5pm on Christmas Eve and 9am on Christmas Day. Before all that though there’s one more invitation I’d like to extend.. We’d love you to sing and share a little light with us. So grab your family and neighbours and join us on Gardner Reserve as we put on NewLife Anglican’s Christmas present to you - the Oran Park Community Carols - December 16th from 5:30pm. We’re pretty excited that this is our 6th year putting on the event and we’ll finish by lighting up the sky with fireworks! You can find more info www. facebook.com/oranparkcommunitycarols and I’d love you to come and say Hi on the night.

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish As we know Christmas 2017 means different things to different people: for some it is a time to spend with family and friends; whereas, for others it is a time to spend another Christmas alone without the presence of those they love most. For some, Christmas this year will be filled with emotions of grief and sorrow; whereas for others this day is the start of a hope filled future as they witness children and grandchildren celebrating their 1st Christmas. For some, Christmas 2017 is another year to continue the traditions that have been passed on for generations. Whereas for others, like the Parish community of St Mary MacKillop Oran Park (that I am blessed to serve as Parish Priest) this Christmas is a time to continue traditions only started in recent years as we gather for worship and prayer to celebrate Christmas 2017. Though no matter what Christmas 2017 means to us, and no matter what emotions and feelings, hopes and fears we bring to this Christmas; I invite you and your loved ones to come and celebrate

Christmas 2017 at St Mary MacKillop Church, Oran Park. We are having 4 services (Masses): on Christmas Eve (Sunday 24 December) 5pm Christmas Eve Vigil "Family Mass", under the large covered area at St Justin's School, Oran Park Dr, Oran Park (please bring rug or chair) and 8pm Christmas Eve Vigil Mass in St Mary MacKillop Church, Oran Park; and on Christmas Day (Monday 25 December) 9am Mass in St Mary Mother of God Church, Leppington, and 9am Mass in St Mary MacKillop Church, Oran Park. May the events of the 1st Christmas - when a small, poor child that Christians name as ‘the Son of God’ was born – remind all of us that Christmas 2017 is not simply about the presents and the parties (however special these may be) but an opportunity to strive to promote amongst our families, friends and our neighbourhoods those values that are so central to this special time of year – like love, peace and goodwill to all. Merry Christmas to one and all.

BIZ MATTERS

Will Your Business Survive The Odds? Are you comfortable with the status quo and being mired in mediocrity or are you creating a business that’s agile, adaptable and ready for what lies ahead? Are you clinging to dying conventions and hanging on for grim death or are you readily embracing change, rising to meet challenges and seizing opportunities? Today’s market is evolving at a rate of knots and if you’re not staying ahead of the game, your chances of survival are diminishing rapidly – more rapidly than we’ve seen before. It’s up to you to stay ahead of changing times, to meet evolving customer needs, to pick up the pace - to continually adapt in order to survive, thrive and grow. Gone are the days of a carefully plotted five-year business plan that guides your annual planning rhythms and provides the comfort of a weekly to-do list that charts your progress. That’s the way to a sure-fire death. You need a roadmap, sure. More importantly, you

need to learn to apply strategy on the run, meet challenges head on and respond to every opportunity as and when it arises. It’s amazing how much you can change a business in as little as ninety days with focused, purposeful action. The opportunity to gain a competitive edge in our local region has never been greater. Now is the time to exponentially rise above the noise and catapult to the front of the line. As we turn our back on yet another year, it’s time to take action and make your vision a reality. Step up from where you are now to where you actually want to be. Survival in business is not about sticking with the pack, its about stepping up and standing out. If you need help to adapt, reach out or connect with me on Facebook for Q&A. Have a safe and successful holiday period and let’s move your business forward in 2018.
