Camden Council Signs Western Sydney City Deal
Mayor of Camden, Lara Symkowiak, has welcomed the Western Sydney City Deal as a landmark agreement between all levels of government for the future of the region. The mayors of eight councils in the west and south west of Sydney joined the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Premier of NSW, Gladys Berejiklian to announce the deal as an agreed commitment to the area. “The deal is not about politics, it’s about all three levels of government working together for the first time to ensure Western Sydney becomes a city in its own region and has the same opportunities for its residents that other parts of Sydney have,” Mayor Symkowiak said. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to align the priorities of our region and establish a long-term vision to deliver sustainable Mayors and Parliamentarians at the Western Sydney City Deal | Image Supplied

Don’t be Afraid to Ask Heartburn; it’s a common condition that affects many people daily. Some people treat it like it’s a headache. They take a pill and hope they figure out what caused it, often forgetting about it until the next time they eat that wrong food. Unfortunately, because it is a common condition, it is often overlooked that it could be more serious than just heartburn. Mark and Polly Grundy were high school sweethearts, they did everything together and lived life to the fullest with their two young boys. While holidaying back in 2012, Mark thought he was suffering from heartburn and started noticing an uncomfortable feeling when he ate. It was decided that they would see a doctor just to make sure it wasn’t anything serious. It was confirmed that Mark’s diagnosis wasn’t good and was told that he is suffering from Oesophageal Cancer. It was terminal. Positive Polly, as she was described by her friends, looked for anything on Oesophageal Cancer. They felt lonely and deflated with the lack of support and knowledge surrounding this disease that was hardly spoken of but was the fastest growing killer. Mark sadly passed away just 12 weeks after being diagnosed, leaving Polly behind with their two young boys. Polly felt it was her mission to help others who were going through or experiencing what her family went through. She wanted to provide support and information about Oesophageal Cancer. She wanted to learn how it could be prevented and how families could be supported. With her determination, strong will and positive attitude, Polly created OCAGI (The Mark Grundy Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Group Inc) in June 2012. Six years on, with Polly and a dedicated team around her, they have been able to provide a support network for Oesophageal Cancer sufferers and their families. They have raised awareness of Oesophageal Cancer to the wider community through local networking, the media, internet and social media. Money has been raised through fundraising events, donations, and grants received. They are proud to have been able to work with Western Sydney University to provide a PhD scholarship for Oesophageal Cancer research. When speaking with Polly, her main message is, “If you feel like something isn’t right, if you have suffered from Heartburn for a long period of time, then please get it checked out. More awareness and early detection can help beat this terrible disease”. Oesophageal Cancer is the fastest growing cancer in Australia but receives little funding. For as little as $5 a week, you could make a difference and help change the direction of someone’s life. Help Polly and her team by donating to OCAGI today. Anzac Nurses
On Anzac Day each year, we honour and remember the brave soldiers who have fought and sometimes lost their lives to ensure the freedoms that the rest of us often take for granted. One of the least known of all Army services is the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps (RAANC), who have supplied much needed care for Australian servicemen both during and after wars. The history of the RAANC dates back to the formation of the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) in 1898, which originally consisted of one Lady Superintendent and 24 nurses. Their first overseas deployment was to Africa during the Boer War. They also served in Burma, India, The Persian Gulf, Egypt, Greece, Italy, France and England. They worked in some very challenging times and often horrendous conditions, trying to save lives and heal limbs, hearts and spirits without running water, electricity and adequate supplies including equipment, medicine, antibiotics and anaesthesia. In WW1, a one thousand bed hospital in Cairo, completely made of tenting without a floor covering, was staffed only by 1 Matron, 15 Sisters and 30 Staff Nurses with male medical orderlies from the Australian Army Medical Corps. Unfathomable. During WWI, more than 3,000 Australian civilian nurses volunteered for active service. 2,286 nurses served overseas, 423 served in Australia, 25 died on active service and 388 were decorated with seven Military Medals awarded to Australian Nurses for their courage under fire. In WWII, 3,477 joined the AANS, 71 of whom lost their lives and 38 became prisoners of war. There were 137 decorations, which included two George Medals in recognition of ‘acts of great bravery’. In 1948, the service was renamed as the Royal Australian Army Nursing Service. We honour and thank these pioneering women who worked so hard and contributed so much. Age No Barrier for Young Photographer He may be only 14 years of age, but Macarthur student Luke Djanikian already has his sights set firmly on pursuing a career in photography when he finishes school, thanks to his love of getting behind the lens and capturing that magic moment in time. The talented local took up photography as a hobby only a year ago before choosing to study it as an elective this year at school. “I took up photography because I’ve always had a creative eye and I also enjoy the software and technology side of it as well. I have a real love and passion for creating long lasting memories” beamed Luke. “Luke would love to share his love for photography with the Macarthur area and local community and make some pocket money along the way doing what he enjoys” said Susan Djanikian, Luke’s Mum. “He is currently teaching himself how to use digital imaging software to enhance and create beautiful images. Luke’s goal is to save enough money to purchase his very own DJI Drone and to dive into the world of aerial multimedia” she added. Luke’s favourite subjects to photograph are all things cars and bikes. He also enjoys taking photos of nature, something we have in abundance in the Macarthur region. He hopes to start up his own photography business slowly, by servicing the local community and offering various packages. “I would love to one day see my photographs published or in a local gallery too” said Luke. The budding entrepreneur has this advice for any teenagers who may want to follow a similar path as him, “If you’re wanting to take up photography, that obviously means that you like it and enjoy the concept of it, so make the most of it and just relax and have fun doing it. Follow your passion”.

What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness, in its simplest form, is about purposefully paying attention to the present moment without judgement. It is “stopping to smell the roses” and fully paying attention to the many moments in life that we would otherwise miss due to being caught up in our thoughts and worries. It is a skill that requires consistent practice in order to be able to train the mind to focus and refocus when it inevitably wanders. In many ways, to better understand what mindfulness is, it is helpful to consider what it isn’t. The opposite of mindfulness is autopilot. Autopilot is the mode we are in when we drive in our car and arrive at our destination and can’t remember the journey. Or the experience of seeing the end credits rolling on our television screen and being unable to recall anything about the program we just sat and watched. Autopilot is the experience of being physically present but mentally absent. What is usually happening in these scenarios is that whilst we are driving, we are thinking about a conversation we had with our partner the night before or, as we are sitting in front of the television we are worrying about a bill we don’t have the money to pay. In both instances, we are missing out on the present moment because our attention has turned to thoughts about the past or the future. So, mindfulness is about just focusing on driving when driving, and just watching television when watching television trying to focus your mind on to the one thing you are doing in that moment. How to Practice Mindfulness Mindfulness can be practiced in many different

ways. It can be done through guided meditation or just by focussing fully on your everyday tasks. A key part of mindfulness practice is paying attention to your five body senses noticing the things you can see, taste, touch, smell and hear around you in this current moment. A common beginning practice is to focus the mind onto the sensations of breathing. Try the following exercise for a few minutes: 1. Get yourself into a comfortable upright sitting posture, you can close your eyes if this makes it easier for you not to get too distracted. 2. Now, pay attention to the sensations of your breath as it moves in and out of your body. You may choose to focus on the movement of your chest, the air coming in through your nose or on your belly rising and falling. 3. Don’t try to change your breathing in any way, just pay attention to the natural sensations of your breath coming into and going out of your body. 4. If your mind becomes distracted at any time, simply notice that this has happened and try to bring your attention back to the movement of your breath. 5. Keep this going for a few minutes, and then gently bring your attention back to the room that you are in and continue with your day. Some Helpful Mindfulness Resources: 1. Prestigious Honours Awarded for Macarthur Dealership
Paul Wakeling Volkswagen, part of the Wakeling Automotive Group based in the Macarthur region in South-West Sydney, has been recognised as Volkswagen National Dealer of the Year. Additionally, the Dealership has was also awarded Metropolitan Dealer, and Premium Dealer at the Volkswagen awards ceremony held in Queensland recently. Managing Director Scott Wakeling stated “I flew to the Gold Coast to attend the all new Volkswagen Polo Launch and attend the annual Premium Dealer Awards Night. This is the third time our little Dealership from the Macarthur has been awarded the top gong for Volkswagen, pleasingly we are the only Dealership to win it three times.” These three honourable awards confirm Paul Wakeling Volkswagen’s distinguished status, particularly as the National Dealer of the Year is awarded to one Australian Dealership only. Scott Wakeling continued “To be a Premium Dealer for Volkswagen you have to consistently achieve Sales, Service and Parts targets, present stock cars to Volkswagen standards, score well in the Control Workshop Test and most importantly, have exceptional customer service.”
Paul Wakeling Volkswagen operates collectively as a team, with appreciative comments from Scott, “Sales Manager Josh Redhouse has diligently moulded the remarkable Sales team and is persistent in always driving great sales results. Our Service Manager Gary Thompson is highly regarded in Vollkwagen and is even considered to have set the bar for Volkswagen Service in Australia. I’m extremely proud of our entire Volkswagen team, including Fleet, Admin, Service Advisors, Technicians and Yard Staff. Paul Wakeling Motor Group is committed to giving back to our local Macarthur community through their own charity ‘Wheels for Life’. This program was implemented by Paul Wakeling Motor Group, where $25 from each new car sold is donated to buy equipment for our local Campbelltown Hospital. Over $1.25 million has been donated since the introduction of the initiative. “I’m extremely proud of our Volkswagen team. This is a testament to all our hard work, planning and proves our commitment to be the best Dealership we can be” Scott concluded. The winning team | Image: Alissa Jones

When I started reading Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, I instantly knew I was going to enjoy reading it. Since then I liked no book better than this book. It is an awesome book. In Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows the main story is about hunting down all the horcruxes and destroying it. Harry Potter must also do one impossible task - kill Voldemort. A horcrux is when you divide your soul to a few parts. Lord Voldemort divided his soul into seven parts, to kill him Harry Potter and his friends have to destroy all the seven horcruxes. I loved J.K. Rowling’s imagination, creativity, pace and how she revealed her secrets in Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows. One of the main parts was the battle between Hogwarts and Voldemort’s army. Voldemort’s army were trying to get Harry Potter out of Hogwarts, his old school. Harry Potter and his friends also had to live in camp, to save Harry Potter from Lord Voldemort. They had to experience all the camping things. As Harry and Hermione were talking about hunting down all the horcruxes Ron didn’t feel included. This bought up a fight between Harry and Ron. What happened then? Read the book to know the rest…. J.K. Rowling left me spell bounded and flabbergasted with this simply marvellous book. She made anything and everything possible; there were lots of twists and turns. I totally loved this book. It is my top favourite book and will always be. It was my one of the best reading experiences. Hopefully you read it too and love it just like I do. Reviewed by: Gurkeerat Dhody who is in Year 5 at Oran Park Public School

Positive Partnerships in Education It is often said that a child’s education starts at home, so why is it when our children go to school that we often feel we have relinquished all rights to input into their learning? A positive and collaborative home-school relationship is pivotal in creating a supportive environment which encourages learning. Over the years society has become more complicated and these relationships have all too often degenerated. Unfortunately, in many communities, educators and parents just do not seem to have enough time to get to know one another and establish relationships on behalf of the children. Sometimes parents feel discouraged from visiting classrooms and teachers rarely consult with families unless a child is in trouble. The result of this situation is a clear division of home and school with misunderstanding, uncertainty and a lack of mutual respect. This can ultimately lead to a vicious cycle of teachers blaming the parents and parents blaming the teachers which, of course, is a worst-case scenario but it highlights the idea that when parents and teachers are active partners in a child’s education there is more chance of success. So how do we produce a strong home-school connection that will set the stage for a child who will grow up with a love for learning? The resounding answer is clear and authentic communication. The problem, however, is that it needs to occur from both ends to be most effective. Families need to be interested, invested, available and realistic. They need to ensure they speak positively about the school, show how they value education and be willing to accept suggestions and praise. Teachers need to be approachable, open-minded, considerate and available. They must ensure they take the time to get to know the students and share their observations and understanding with families whilst showing respect and involving families in the child’s learning process. If you put these things together, it is a recipe for success which will ultimately lead to a home-school relationship conducive to wellbeing and learning for the student. Prepare For Change Preparation is your best defence when it comes to surviving in times of change. Change is inevitable. How you prepare for that change will undoubtedly determine whether you survive or thrive. Businesses today are operating in an environment of increasing complexity and accelerating change. Consumer behaviours are ever-changing, we’re trying to do more with less, operating in a world of instant gratification, e-commerce, border-free trade, advances in technology, increasing competition – it doesn’t stop! If you’re struggling to create sustainable business in a world that just won’t stand still, feeling bogged-down and out-paced in search of a strategy for success, or losing sleep trying to build a business with the resilience to withstand this rapidly-evolving world - you’re not alone! It’s a common issue when I’m talking to businesses, large and small. Yet the word ‘change’ can have a paralysing effect. It can
appear easier to take refuge in the status quo and wait for the past to appear and solve everything, but the status quo is an oxymoron – we’re already in the middle of transformational change. In the new world of business, survival is intrinsically linked to your ability to prepare for change. The goal is not to simply survive today’s changes but to build a resilient organisation that’s able to anticipate, prepare for and adapt to the changes you can’t see coming. Able to bend, not bust. Here’s three questions to ask yourself to gauge how prepared you really are for what’s coming: 1. What changes have you anticipated and built into your strategy for the next twelve months? 2. What actions are you taking now so that you’re well prepared for those changes when they hit? 3. How agile and adaptable is your business? How much room have you got to bend, before you break?
FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish This time last year in my FAITH article I mentioned a speech that was delivered at the University of NSW by the famous social researcher Dr Hugh Mackay who said that the state of our nation actually starts in the street where you and I live. I must say, twelve months on, Hugh Mackay’s words are worth repeating: “We don't know our neighbours” has become a cliché of contemporary urban life … A disturbing piece of research … has shown that only one-third of Australians say they trust their neighbours. Clearly, that could not possibly mean that 65 per cent of neighbours are untrustworthy – what it must mean is that most people in our society don't know their neighbours well enough to have learnt to trust them … What I am suggesting is that when we lose sight of our role as neighbours, the health of the neighbourhood suffers. And when the health
of the neighbourhood suffers, we all suffer. When we ignore our biological destiny as social creatures – people who need each other; people for whom a sense of belonging is fundamental to our wellbeing; people who utterly rely on communities to define us, sustain us and protect us – then our level of anxiety (1) is likely to rise” No matter if we have lived in this area for many years, or have only just arrived and are making a new home here in Oran Park and the surrounding suburbs and estates. I encourage all of us to allow Dr Hugh Mackay’s words to challenge us that we will strive, even though we live busy lives and we’re building our homes in busy streets, to become ‘good neighbours’ who see those we live around and work with not as strangers but friends. David & Goliath & Pizza Have you watched your pizza being delivered on your phone recently? Never heard of it? Dominos has introduced a GPS tracker in their delivery cars that connects back to a phone app. When enabled this amazing connection of wireless technology, handheld computing, orbiting satellites, and hot pizza creates something pretty amazing. But all isn’t happy in pizza land. A small Sydney IT company is suing Dominos claiming that they stole their technology and handed confidential information to a competitor. When written up in the paper it was under the headline of a, “David and Goliath battle.” And we all know what that means.. Don’t we? The concept of a David and Goliath battle didn’t originate with unmatched football teams, or Australian IT companies and pizza cooKing multinationals. David was a real person, a King, in Israel roughly 3000 years ago. Goliath was a 9 foot tall

man - rightly understood to be a giant - and an enemy of Israel. They met in battle and David (at that time only a shepherd boy) prevailed over this monster with rocks and a sling. The Bible says that the real David and Goliath battle was decided because God was on the side of the smaller man who trusted in Him. This term at NewLife we’re going to investigate the real life, loves, and failures of King David. We’ll see his humble origins as a keeper of sheep, his rise to warrior status, and finally King. We’ll note his song writing prowess even as we read and reflect on David’s tragic adultery with Bathsheba - a sin popularly sung about in that Leonard Cohen song, “Hallelujah.” David is one of those figures we bump into even 3000 years after he lived. You’re invited to get the full story with us at our new service times 8:45am, 10:30am, & 6pm.. Come and meet the person behind the pizza battle.

and practical outcomes for our communities. “Geographically, Camden is ideally located to harness the many benefits the new airport will offer and bring to the region. “Attracting commercial investment to the region will provide our residents with job diversity and more options to work within their local areas, reducing their commute times and improving their quality of life,” she said. “Western Sydney is the powerhouse of NSW, with the region expected to grow to 1.5 million people over the next 20 years. This is why it is so important to have this high level strategic agreement in place for the future of our region. ‘’This is just the start of the process. Over the coming months, I will continue to advocate and work on behalf of our community to ensure our local area receives the right level of investment, infrastructure and local employment prospects for our current and future residents,” Mayor Symkowiak concluded. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST April is here; and with it are plenty of festivities. Not only has Easter arrived and gone in the [blink] of an eye, this month we also take some time out to remember the courageous contribution and suffering of all those who have served and died at war. Lisa reflects on the often unsung heroes, our ANZAC Nurses, in 'Looking Back' this month on page 4. As we approach the end of the month, the school holidays will be in full swing! Keep the kids busy with our 'Holiday' fun on page 11. Now, it's time to put your feet up, make a cuppa and enjoy 'Your Community News' "There is always, always something to be thankful for."
