Blending excitement, entertainment, tradition and agriculture, the Camden Show offers two action packed days whilst maintaining the ‘Still a Country Show’ theme, taking place on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th of April. Agriculture is the back bone of Australia, and the Show aims to highlight the last 133 years in a way that celebrates the value of our farmers and growers. “Bring the family out for two big days and nights of family fun to enjoy the displays, demonstrations and competitions” Camden Show Society President Greg Wall said. “It’s also a chance to learn more about historic Camden and agriculture, especially Camden’s role in the development of agriculture and where our food comes from. The Show is great value for money particularly with a membership or family day pass”. With a variety of entertainment to please all ages and interests, Onslow Park Showground will explode with colours, smells and sounds of children laughing to the Show rides whizzing around. Some of the Show’s highlights this year include the popular Xtreme Bulls Rodeo, bullock team demonstrations, lumberjacks, axe throwing, Eljay Freestyle Show with lots of motorcycle stunts, Noah’s Racing Pigs, team sorting, campdraft demonstration and the Aussie FMX Motocross team just to name a few! From early morning to late evening, the Showground will be full of things to keep visitors entertained. There are pavilions full of exhibits, a local talent competition, wood chopping, whip cracking, horse and animal shows, Charlie the Brahman Steer, educational and fun displays and the Drover’s Camp for tasty damper and billy tea. Combine this with sideshow alley and you have a unique ambiance of modern and old, which is why Camden is ‘Still a Country Show’! Disability Housing Provider Aims to Build $1bn in Innovative Homes Specialist disability housing provider DPN Casa Capace (casacapace. com.au) have commenced construction of an architecturally designed, resident-centric home for people with disabilities in Oran Park. DPN Casa Capace aims to scale the model to more than 700 homes in five years, in partnership with institutional investors and disability care providers. The homes, Australia-wide, will be worth around $1 billion and help meet the growing demand for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) by housing 3500 residents. DPN Casa Capace is a registered provider with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and part of the DPN Group, an award-winning property and financial services enterprise (dpn.com.au). Its semi-detached housing prototype, which it is launching in Sydney, is designed for two to three NDIS participants with a disability (each side), including those with complex needs, who can have each room tailored to their needs. With each resident’s NDIS SDA payment funding their tenancy, DPN Casa Capace will partner with NDIS Supported Independent Living (SIL) care providers, who will choose suitable housing locations, and accommodate residents with disabilities and their carers, in their homes. The Northcott Society is the care provider and design collaborator for the first home, in Oran Park. Construction commenced in February and tenants are expected to move in from August. The $1.5m Oran Park home is fully funded by DPN. Sam Khalil, DPN Founder and Managing Director, says “The private sector is best equipped to develop the housing to meet Australia’s growing demand for SDA homes. DPN is sourcing capital from institutional investors – and our supply chain has the capacity to build hundreds of homes each year, at about 70 per cent of the cost of previous Government-built homes and at a higher quality. Further cost efficiencies will be achieved as we scale. We are taking on the responsibility and cost of the homes, allowing the care providers to focus on placing tenants and providing the required support and care. “Major institutional investors are seeing the benefit and demand for private companies in this sector. Through our advisors, we have already received strong initial interest and are in discussions with both Australian and international investors wishing to place significant capital into this sector”. Lee Carpenter, deputy CEO at The Northcott Society, says: “We are strong champions of the move away from the institutional image of a traditional disability group home. Partnering with developers like DPN Casa Capace shows that attractive, modern developments should be what the standard should be for disability housing. As one of Australia’s largest disability service providers, including disability accommodation, we will provide support services for the customers in this exciting new development”. U

Vanessa is Making Slime Fun Put your hands up if your children love to play with slime? If your hand is up, then you may want to meet local 12-year-old student Vanessa Iglis, who has just started her own business, Happy Kids Slime. Vanessa, the budding ‘kidpreneur’ started her business in October 2018. In just six months, she now sells her slime kits at local markets as well as running birthday parties and school holiday workshops. “My passion with slime started 3 years ago. I used to beg my mum to make slime, but her response was always to take it outside and don’t make a mess. Slime really isn’t that messy if you make it right. I would watch countless YouTube videos to learn the secrets and find the best recipe to make slime squish, poke and stretch. I was obsessed. My mum started to see how crazy I was about slime and started to take some interest” smiled Vanessa. She soon convinced her mum after begging her to sell slime at the local markets. They worked together to make the slime safe and non-toxic whilst using safe ingredients for kids. Her first market at Willowdale was a sell out! “Vanessa has helped me with my business, Happy Kids Sand Art. She learnt at a young age how to deal with customers and run a small family business. She attended fetes and festivals doing sand art with kids and then one day begged me to start her own slime business. I kept holding Vanessa back as I wasn't a big fan of slime at first, but after I saw her passion grow, I decided to let her give it a go” said Maria Iglis, Vanessa’s mum. “She is always looking at better ways to make slime fun and exciting and we are slowly growing the business. Her priority is her school studies of course but in her free time, she explores new ways to make slime. There are so many different types of slime you can make, it's exciting! Next year we plan to travel to New York to attend the Slime Expo” continued Maria. “My mum is now my biggest fan” Vanessa exclaimed. Her next workshop will be at Willowdale Community Centre on Wednesday 17th April, then at Panania Diggers on Friday 26th April. For more information about Vanessa and her amazing business, search Vanessa and her wonderful slime creations | Image Happy Kids Slime on Facebook.

St Benedict’s Catholic College Celebrating 10 years in 2020 St Benedict’s Catholic College is a coeducational Catholic High School in the Benedictine tradition with an expected enrolment of 1020 in 2020; in keeping with our Positive Education framework we pride ourselves on being a school where students, in the words of St Benedict, have “Something to Strive for, and Nothing to Run From”. Surprisingly for many, the College will be celebrating 10 years of providing Catholic Education in 2020. The final stage of the building programme saw the opening of a modern Creative and Performing Arts Centre opened this year. The results of our third HSC cohort were outstanding with over 7% of students gaining a Band 6 in one or more subjects. In our three years our first groups of students have been on the Premier’s Merit List, many students on the Distinguished Achievers lists across a range of subjects; student’s projects have been chosen for the Shape (TAS) Showcase. Last year we had over 80% of our students in Bands 4-6, the best performance amongst the systemic Catholic Schools and amongst the best performing schools in any sector locally. The College has joined the Positive Education Schools Network and is beginning a journey with parents, staff and students, looking at a strengthsbased philosophy of education over the next few years. Our unique Leadership Diploma is offered in Years 9-11 and involves students participating in a ROSA accredited programme which encourages students to participate in the total life of the school: in co-curricular activities, social action activities, and participate in the Outdoor Education Programme in a wilderness setting. Enrolments are now open for Year 7 2020. Applications can be obtained from the College office at 70-86 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park, during office hours (7:45am to 3:30pm), or can be downloaded from the College website at www.sbccdow.catholic.edu.au Applications close Friday 12 April (no application fees apply). Do you have a Love of Writing?

Camden Writers Inc has helped people put pen to paper for the past 21 years. Formally known as Camden Writes and Scribblers, the writing club is welcoming new members in 2019. Local resident Ms. Grace Sewell led the group until 2017, when Mr. Evan Lepherd took over the Presidency. Camden Writers Inc started with three members and now has over twenty dedicated members that come together the first and third Tuesday of each month to share stories, writing tips and have fun with their writing. They meet at 9:30am in the Red Gum Room at the Narellan Library. First, any member that has written a story that they wish to share is read. Once the readings are read out loud, constructive feedback is provided to the writer so he/she can continue to improve on their skills. After the stories are completed, the group takes a short morning break for tea and coffee, and then the fun begins. The monitor for the meeting (each meeting the monitor position is rotated so that each member enjoys a chance to hold the meeting) proposes three diverse topics. Each member then chooses one to write about – on the spot, thus challenging each member to be creative, concise and clever with a short story on a short notice. For the past few years, Camden Writers Inc has put together an anthology of their stories in a book titled “Making a Splash which is available for sale to the general public. There are several reasons why writers write; some writers write to inform like a journalist, some write to persuade or to give their opinion. Another writer may write to entertain, and most writers write to express themselves. Whatever your reason may be, come and join them. If you have an interest, please call their President Evan on 02 4647 5111 or their Secretary Jose’ on 0402 984086. Where are all the sparrows? We have been here 3 years, our 50yr Anniversary after moving from Liverpool after 47 years and five children marry and move on. Husband had been coming to Oran Park since he was 17 and when we started looking for a new abode was happy we decided Oran Park. Now since being here I have never seen any sparrows, some cockatoos, mynor birds a beautiful eagle at the side of the road or falcon I'm not certain....but no sparrows. One day there was a swarm of tiny wrens out the front.....but no sparrows. I know all the trees being cut down might be the answer, I have noticed no bird droppings anywhere (big bonus), no doves, pigeons and no sparrows. Anyone have an answer to the question? FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish You only have to go into any local supermarket to see that preparations for Easter are in full swing, and many have already started to think about this special event on our yearly calendars. For many people – both Christian and non-Christian alike – Easter is often associated with the sharing of Easter eggs and Hot Cross buns, and children often associate this time of year with the arrival of the Easter bunny. We might not realise it but all these “symbols of Easter” find their origins in the Easter story proclaimed by Christians. For example, the Easter egg is a symbol of new life; and when a traditional chocolate Easter egg (not like those fancy ones today that contain trinkets and lollies) is broken open and the owner finds nothing inside the egg, this is a symbol of the tomb that was found empty on that 1st Easter Sunday, because Jesus had risen from the dead. The Hot Cross bun also finds its origin in Christian symbolism; as the cross made of dough is a reminder of the cross upon which Jesus died. Once again this Easter, here in the parish of St Mary MacKillop – one of Australia’s newest Catholic parishes – we will be having a number of celebrations and events, including Masses (church services) on Easter Sunday (Sunday 21st April) at our northern Mass centre of St Mary Mother of God Church, (cc. Ingleburn and Dickson Rds) Leppington at 8am, and at our southern Mass centre (94 Oran Park Dr) Oran Park at 8am and 10am. We will also be having a special Easter Vigil Mass (Saturday 20th April) at 7pm at our southern Mass centre (94 Oran Park Dr, Oran Park). More details about these events can be found on our website www. marymackillopparish.org.au Whatever Easter 2019 means to us, and whatever the joys and struggles we are facing, I pray that this time of year will be another opportunity for all of us, both individually and with family and friends, to celebrate the great gift of life. FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park NSW 2570

A Good Friday & Even Better Sunday Put simply, Easter is all about Jesus. Jesus’s death. Jesus’s resurrection. That’s Easter. So let’s get straight to it, why is it called, “Good Friday?” It does seem strange that the day set aside to remember Jesus’s torturous crucifixion at the hands of the Romans 2000 years ago is called ‘good’ in any way. The Bible tells us why. “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Sin and death aren’t good and they are linked by God who says that the penalty for the one (sin) leads to the other (death). That’s where Jesus steps in. Jesus (who never sinned) stands in the place of each one of us. On the cross Jesus bears the burden of our sin and suffers the penalty of death on our behalf. So the debt is paid for those who would ask Jesus for the forgiveness He has won. That makes it a pretty good Friday. Why is Sunday better? The heart of the Christian faith is captured in these words first uttered at Jesus’s grave side, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.” Resurrection. Life after death. And not just for Jesus but for those who trust Him too. That’s the reason Sunday is even better. Join us on Thursday 18th at 8pm, Good Friday at 10am, and on Sunday at any of our 3 services. Details online.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus How many times have you taken your cat to the vet for a cat bite abscess? Painful as these are for both you and your cat, you need to be aware your cat may be at risk of contracting FIV. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) attacks and weakens the immune system, making our furry friends more susceptible to other common diseases. The most common way for a cat to get FIV is via deep bite wounds from other cats that already have the disease (i.e. FIVpositive cats). FIV is unlikely to spread between cats in casual, non-aggressive contact e.g. grooming, sharing bowls, or play fighting between cats within the same household. We know that male undesexed cats with outdoor access are most likely to contract FIV because of their tendency to get into fights that result in bite wounds. Much less commonly, the virus can be transmitted from a FIV-positive mother cat to their kittens through the uterus and the milk. But how do you know if your cat has FIV? A simple blood test can be done to detect if your cat has been exposed to the virus. This test detects the body’s response to exposure, which is measured by antibody levels. If you are concerned your cat has been exposed to FIV, we recommend testing 60 days after the “exposure event (e.g. cat fight) as it takes a few weeks for antibodies to develop. If your cat tests negative and you want to reduce their risk of getting FIV, Uni Vets Camden recommends vaccination against FIV.

FIV negative cats require an initial course of three vaccinations, 2-4 weeks apart followed by yearly boosters. Kittens less than 6 months old can start straight onto a vaccination programme without testing. Uni Vets Camden is offering free FIV testing valued at $70 with any new start-up vaccination programme until the 11th May. If you have a cat already regularly vaccinate for FIV who is due for a booster in the next 3 months, we would also like to hear from you for a research study. If you and your cat are able to assist us with this study, you may be eligible for a free annual booster vaccination. If you have any questions or would like to know more, please don’t hesitate to contact Uni Vets Camden on (02) 4655 0777 to see one of our friendly vets.
