Gledswood Hills residents will benefit from more community space after Council endorsed the transfer of land and buildings in the area. Council and developer Sekisui House have worked together on the deal which will see the latter sell the 10,000 square metre site for the purpose of general community use that will benefit the Gledswood Hills community. The land, located at Fairbank Drive, Gledswood Hills, has been used as The Hermitage Sales and Information Centre, playground and temporary car park by Sekisui House. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the approval of the transfer was a great win for residents. “We know how important it is to provide the community with community space and in particular parks for our local families and children to enjoy,” Cr Fedeli said. “This will allow Council to prepare another fantastic park in the Camden area which I am sure will be thoroughly used and will bring so many benefits to residents both in Gledswood Hills and surrounding areas. “I thank Sekisui House for working with Council to find the best solution for the community and look forward to residents using the space well into the future.” The property is set to be transferred to Council when the sales office is no longer required and will be followed by a detailed assessment of the land and building to understand the opportunities at the site. ”We are extremely pleased that Council will be able to repurpose the site, ensuring that families from both within The Hermitage and the greater Camden area will be able to enjoy it for years to come,” Sekisui House Project Manager Ben Styles said. “The commitment from Council to retain the iconic landscape and park settings is of enormous benefit, adding yet more green spaces for use throughout the estate.” Community feedback will be sought on the future of the site. r

Local Rotary Club Opening Opportunities When you think of “Service Clubs”, you might think of the park in your local area with the sign listing off all the local Lions, Quota, Zonta, Apex and Rotary Clubs – and you might also have a mental picture of a mostly older, mostly male group of folks meeting up and cooking BBQs from time to time. Well, you wouldn’t be entirely wrong in many cases – and they certainly have been around a long time and done a great many good things in many local communities. The Macarthur area’s newest Rotary Club, however, is a little different. The Rotary Club of Gregory Hills Next-Gen was formed in 2018 and is currently made up of 28 people from diverse backgrounds in our local community. The average age of the Club’s members is 42 and there is a 60/40 female/male split. This makes the local Club quite unique in the Rotary world. Having survived a tough 2020 with fewer opportunities to meet and work together, the group have powered into 2021 with great enthusiasm for supporting the local community with their projects. Since their launch, the Club has participated in several projects including: • Supporting the community outreach work of Shining Stars Foundation, by assisting with their Oran Park outreach and providing fuel for vehicles • Supporting the local Headspace youth mental health services centre with the purchase of case management software • Supporting the Dress for Success pop-up fundraising initiatives at Wests Leagues Club • Raising funds for Blue Wren House – Camden Domestic Violence emergency accommodation • Funding a ‘Teacher in a Box’ self-contained learning intranet server to schools in need in the Philippines • Sending several 14 to 16-year-old teenagers to RYPEN, the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment, on their first journey towards developing leadership skills, and • Joining with neighbouring Rotary Clubs to present the Police Office of the Year Awards for the Camden and Campbelltown Local Area Commands. These are just some of the initiatives and opportunities this vibrant and busy Club is getting behind. Perhaps it sounds like something you would like to be involved in? Membership is open to people living in or having a connection to Gregory Hills and surrounding areas. Meeting twice a month at Wests Country Club, Gledswood Hills, President Kim Meredith said, “Our meetings are less formal than traditional Clubs, yet still focused on getting things done in the community. It’s also a chance to meet like-minded people in a social environment and have a sense of working together for a good cause”. My Grandfather the ANZAC

Our Service men and women have contributed enormously to the security and comfort of all Australians. Without them leaving the comforts of their home and going into battle, we would have quite a different life than what we enjoy now. About 20 years ago, I became interested in family history. I wanted to discover my past and the sacrifices that different members of my family made. How did they influence my life and that of their own families? I knew that Alfred Pennell, my maternal grandfather was in WW1, but little else about his service record or what he endured at this time. Through luck and discussions with a friend, I received a package from ‘Canberra War Service’, which told me a lot about the time he spent in the forces. He enlisted on 14th August 1915 and was in the 3rd Battalion AIF. He was just 21 years and one month. He embarked for active service on board the HMAS Wiltshire on 22nd August 1915 and was posted overseas. He fought in one of the bloodiest battles of WW1 at Bullecourt in France and was wounded in battle and sent home on 24th August 1917. It was stated in his military documents that he had trachoma of both eyes and corneal ulcers, explaining “he is unfit for any form of military service”. Fardy or Poppy as we knew him, was a broken man. He had a great deal of difficulty getting work when he returned to Australia and consequently travelled around the country. From his life in Mudgee, Coonabarabran, Winton and a lot of other little towns in the mid-west area, he took on whatever work he could get to feed his family. He also spent a lot of time unemployed. His children were born throughout the west. It was also a hard life for his wife (my grandmother) and she passed away when she was only 52 years old. My father’s uncle enlisted in Mudgee and his embarkation was in Newcastle on 17th May 1915. He left Australia on board the HMAS Malakuta, at 26 years of age. He joined the 5th Light Horse Regiment as a trooper. This brave, young soldier was killed just 6 days later at Gallipoli and now rests at Shell Green Cemetery at Gallipoli in Turkey. Local Makes the Finals in Youth Awards

Local Sharnie Bartle has been announced as a Finalist in the Aboriginal Education Council Aboriginal Education Award, part of the 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards. Sharnie, 28 of Harrington Park is creating an everlasting cultural significance. Sharnie studied to become a School Learning Support Officer, which helped her land a temporary then permanent position as Aboriginal Education Officer at Campbellfield Primary School. She works closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and has developed home/school relationships through trust and open channels of communication. She has helped develop their Personal Learning Pathways called Stepping Stones. It has promoted the students’ academic achievement in Literacy and Numeracy and has developed a bridge in closing the gap between Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal students. In 2020, she introduced the First Nations Bedtime Story Challenge. The Finalists will be presented, and Winners announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner to be held at Doltone House – Darling Island on Friday evening 30th April 2021. Great prizes are up for grabs with each category winner receiving a trophy and $2,000 in prizes. One of the ten category winners will be chosen as the 2021 NSW/ACT Young Achiever of the Year and will receive a magnificent overall winner trophy. All Finalists will go into the People’s Choice Award presented by 2DayFM, which is run through their Facebook page; “7NEWS Young Achiever Awards NSW & ACT”. Please ensure you like their page and vote for your favourite Finalist. The winner will be announced at the Awards Gala Presentation Dinner and will receive a Family Pass to Taronga Zoo and Raging Waters, provided by 2DayFM. Community members including friends and colleagues of each Finalist are invited to share this special occasion. Local’s Life-Changing Implant

Oran Park resident, Grandfather Graeme Brown (70) celebrated World Hearing Day 2021 last month with a new sense of purpose thanks to the life-changing addition of his new best friend, a Cochlear implant. After spending the last 15 years isolated and unhappy since becoming profoundly deaf aged 55, Graeme’s relationships with his wife and family are back on track following the recovery of his hearing, through the transformative Cochlear implant technology. Graeme explained, “It used to be an extreme struggle to hear or join conversations. Now, my life has totally changed, I am able to converse with my wife and grandchildren without a second thought. It’s a truly remarkable invention and the procedure was excellent – I would recommend getting one in a heartbeat”. Invented by Australian icon and living legend, Professor Graeme Clark, a Cochlear implant works by replacing the function of the damaged sensory hair cells inside the inner ear, providing sounds direct to the brain. 40 years since the first commercial Cochlear implant, the technology has continuously evolved and it’s thanks to these developments that Graeme (Brown) has been able to re-gain the connection with his loved ones. Graeme’s wife, Bev added, “Graeme’s hearing loss was incredibly frustrating. We continuously had to repeat everything several times and speak very loudly to be understood. I’m so thankful that Graeme discovered Cochlear implants and decided to get one – we can now have a conversation like normal people, and I don’t have to repeat myself!” Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, Cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain through two parts; the external sound processor and the implant which the surgeon inserts under the skin attached to an electrode array that will sit in the patient’s inner ear. With the latest Cochlear Nucleus 7 Sound Processor, recipients can even stream sound directly from compatible Apple or Android devices or from any Bluetooth enabled phone to the implant. Specific settings also provide the ability to phase out background noise making every day social situations easier to experience. To date, Cochlear implants have helped over 600,000 people around the world, yet only about 5% of people who are candidates for Cochlear implants have one. r

25 April Have fun with Camden Libraries at April School Holiday Program

The very best way to deal with eating difficulties is not to stress about it. Look at the positive. Rather than focusing on what they don’t eat, focus on what they do eat, and expand their range and variety ever so slowly. Look upon it in the spirit of adventure rather than with fear and dread. The mirror neurons in your child’s brain will pick up on your attitude and feelings. If you have anxiety about mealtimes, your child will smell the fear and respond accordingly. If they get a lot of attention for their fussy eating, they will do more of it. Fussy eaters can be extremely determined and persistent (some might say ‘stubborn’). There is a strategy recommended by Dr Thomas Phelan – the back-up meal. You give your child tiny proportions of the family meal. A teaspoon of everything, separated from each other on a small plate. The only stipulation is that they have to try what is on the plate. They can eat what they want to and leave what they want to but they have to give it a bit of a go. If they like some of it they can have more. You give your child lots of descriptive praise for what they try and eat. The child at any time is able to ask for their back-up meal. The criteria for the back-up meal is that it is quick and simple to prepare, and somewhat nutritious. It could be as simple as a peanut butter sandwich or tinned spaghetti on toast. The backup meal is always the same. You pay no attention whatsoever to your child eating their back-up meal. Slowly but surely your child will eat more of the main meal and less of the back-up meal. This can take time – months or years. Just be consistent. You can be more persistent than your child, right? When I tell people the above story, they are concerned about the child “winning”. Is parenting a battle or a race? Are our children our enemies or adversaries? What is the most positive way to approach the situation? It’s better to catch flies with honey than with vinegar. Force, yelling, and manipulation will only work for a short time and the effects on your child are not that great. Never start a war with your child over food – you will not win. r

Local children are set to have a ball over the April school holidays with a special program in place at Camden Libraries. From art and science workshops to music sessions, the April School Holiday program will keep children entertained and educated. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli said Camden Libraries’ school holiday program was a great benefit to local families. “Keeping children educated, entertained and informed over school holidays is important for their development as well as to assist families,” Cr Fedeli said. “We have a great line up of events planned which will be held at Camden, Narellan and Oran Park Libraries which will test local children’s abilities and also provide them with great fun. “It is fantastic to be able to have our face-to-face holiday program return for local children and we have all COVID-19 safety measures in place.” The program runs between Wednesday 7 April and Friday 16 April, including: • Wind Things Science Workshop - Wednesday 7 April, 2-3pm • Watercolour Workshop - Thursday 8 April, 3-4.30pm • Meet the Monsters Puppetry Workshop - Friday 9 April, 10.30am-noon • All hands-on drums with Tom Harding - Tuesday 13 April, 10-11am • All hands-on Ukuleles with Tom Harding - Thursday 15 April, 10-11am • Slinky Business with Dennis Clare - Friday 16 April, 10.3011.30am Bookings are essential for all workshops and are now open. Gregory Hills FC: Bigger and Better in 2021 With the 2021 Macarthur Football Association Competition kicking off this month, local club Gregory Hills FC are going from strength to strength, doubling in size in only their second year of playing. The new season will see over 300 registered players coming together to form a massive 31 teams. Despite COVID and all the additional restrictions that 2020’s season brought with it, Gregory Hills FC players were excited to get out on the field and play in their inaugural year. “The enthusiasm that parents had to share their children’s success and highlights from each game last year was amazing. This was shown through the photos and updates we would receive each week” explained Renato Cocchietto, President of Gregory Hills FC. “The family and community spirit within the club was inspiring. Teams that played away would always come and find me to tell me about their successes and highlights. In particular, our Under 9 Girls, who at the start of the season lost all their games, however by mid-season they were able to achieve a win” Renato added. This season, the club has doubled in size. They have over 16 teams alone just in the Under 6’s and Under 7’s. The all-girl’s teams have grown from 2 last year to 6. There are some mixed teams, an Under 13 Youth team and an Over 35’s team. “I am looking forward to seeing all our new players and teams get out and enjoy the game” smiled Renato. Most importantly, the club would like to thank the community for all their support in their first year. “We as a club have been overwhelmed with how supportive our local community has been for a new club, especially during such hard times as COVID. Despite this, all our sponsors have come back this year. The community spirit has allowed us to grow. We are truly thankful” said Renato to the Oran Park Gazette. Oran Park Probus Club The year is well under-way and Oran Park Probus Club has just held its Annual General Meeting. The new Committee is due to meet soon. Part of the discussions will concern activities and events for the year ahead. Once vaccinated, perhaps travel will be back on the agenda but for now we will be planning smaller ‘tag along’ events like the car rally we will be having soon and the regular Coffee and Chats we all enjoy. Our craft sessions allow members to learn a new craft or work at something they enjoy doing whilst having a chat and a ‘cuppa’. The new Walking Group is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get some Vitamin D at the same time! Probus is a social group for retired and semi-retired people in the community, offering the opportunity to get together with like-minded people, make new friends and have some fun along the way. Oran Park Probus Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month at Wests Lakeside Golf Club, Camden. Many of the members enjoy lunch together after the meeting - socially distanced of course. 3 Reasons this Easter will be Better than the Last One Last Easter, we were in survival mode. Last April, we were in the middle of our first COVID lockdown and so much was unknown. This year, we’re slowly emerging and the vaccine is being rolled out. This Easter just has to be better than the last - here’s 3 reasons why: 1) We can gather Our church is open, and we will be glad to have you come in for one of our three Easter services. The first is Thursday night at 7pm - as service of remembrance where we’ll celebrate the Lord’s Supper together. On Good Friday morning (April 2nd) we’ll be reflecting on the death of Jesus at 9:30am and there will be a great program running for our kids. And we’re saving something special for Sunday. 2) We’ll be able to sing on Sunday On the morning that we remember the resurrection of Jesus, we’re gathering outdoors on the grounds of Oran Park Anglican College at 8am. There are a number of reasons - firstly, so that there’s no limit on how many can come - we’ll be outside! Secondly, we’ll be able to sing our praise aloud. And thirdly, we’ll be following the service with brunch and Easter Eggs for the kids. We can’t wait. 3) It could be the first time you say yes to Jesus Jesus said, “I have come that you might have life and have it to the full.” The cross deals with our sin, and the resurrection brings us hope that’s bigger than the grave. If you’ve never said yes to Jesus, this Easter would be a great time to take hold of that invitation. You can find more information on our website. Whilst some may not realise or acknowledge the link, the call to live as ‘Easter People’ is reflected in the sharing of Easter eggs and Hot Cross buns, for both these “symbols of Easter” find their origins in the Easter story. For example, the Easter egg is a symbol of new life; and when a traditional chocolate Easter egg (not like those fancy ones today that contain trinkets and lollies) is broken open and the owner finds nothing inside the egg, this is a symbol of the tomb that was found empty on that 1st Easter Sunday, because Jesus had risen from the dead. The Hot Cross bun also finds its origin in Christian symbolism as the cross made of dough is a reminder of the cross upon which Jesus died. Once again during this Easter Season, here in the parish of St Mary MacKillop – one of Australia’s newest Catholic parishes – we will be having a number of celebrations and events, including Masses (church services) at our northern Mass centre of St Mary Mother of God Church, (Corner Ingleburn and Dickson Roads) Leppington, and at our southern Mass centre (94 Oran Park Drive) Oran Park. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST As we prepare the April edition for print, parts of our state and our very own communities have been engulfed by severe rainfall and floods, it has been quoted in the media to be a 'once in a century' event. I know it comes as no surprise that the community has banded together once again with complete strangers offering accommodation, while others assist with the boarding of pets, supply of clothes, transportation, food and so many other offers of support. It makes me so proud and privileged to be a part of this wonderful community we call home. As we move through April, we hope to put this event behind us. But, like COVID, there will be plenty of work ahead in rebuilding and restoring life 'after the floods'. Try and catch your breath, take a moment to read about all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
