Oran Park Probus Club

Further enquiries to the secretary, Liz. Ph 0410758755 or email oranpark@probusclubs.com.au

April sees the start of a new year for Oran Park Probus Club. We have just had our AGM and in her speech the president mentioned the growth of our club. It has been wonderful to welcome new members this past year and to see some of the newer members take on various roles within the club. Probus clubs are social clubs that promote friendship, fellowship and fun to retired and semi- retired people within the community. We invite guest speakers to talk at the meetings. Topics are varied and always interesting, sometimes just entertaining. Our activity programmes are well supported by our members. Unfortunately, due to the current health emergency caused by the Corona virus, we have cancelled all activities and future meetings until further notice. v New Member Induction | Image Supplied

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish In these days of social distancing, it may be tempting to fall into despair and loneliness. We can become paralysed by fear, full of mistrust of people around us, and give in to our darker impulses, the shadows which stalk all of us. This must not happen to you. This must not happen to us. We are children of the light (1 Thess 5:4-5) We are a single body, no matter where we are, unified and animated by the Holy Spirit and built on Jesus Christ (Eph 4:4-6). We are people who follow His way – the way of the cross which becomes the path to the fullness of life, as the empty tomb so powerfully witnessed to the disciples on that first Easter dawn, and still witnesses to us today. So I urge you, my sisters and brothers, to find ways to nourish and develop your spirit! Suspended events and routines does not mean God is suspended, or our faith is suspended. We must together learn and develop new ways to nourish ourselves spiritually, especially when we can be weighed down by the anxieties and tumult of the world. We need to find ways to go to our Father in the quiet of our homes, in the silence of our hearts, and pour ourselves out to Him, and find in Him our secure resting place, our fountain of life when everything else seems parched. During these coming weeks and months, it is important that while you and your family cannot maybe go out as you usually would do, that you do all you can to provide yourself with some positive community and spiritual nourishment in the middle of a world of anxiety and isolation. So I invite you if you haven’t already to join together via our YouTube Channel: www.bit.ly/mmop-live - our weekend church services (Masses) are livestreamed on Saturday 5pm and Sunday 10am, and available on demand after that. We will also be adding resources to help you deepen your spiritual life from home. The value of both of these thefts is believed to be over $200,000. Both the matters were reported to police, with the Camden Police Area Command commencing an investigation into the theft. Detectives are asking anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in the area at that time to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Kids TRYathlon an Overwhelming Success

Camden’s second Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon was hailed a success, with almost 1,000 participants swimming, cycling and running through the Camden area. All participants were awarded a medal by Weet-Bix ambassador and former Socceroo great, Tim Cahill, at the completion of their TRYathlon. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said it was fantastic to see so many families out and about enjoying the beautiful Camden town centre. “Living a healthy and active lifestyle is important to do from a young age,” Cr Fedeli said. “It was great to see so many children swimming in Camden War Memorial Pool, cycling through closed suburban streets and finally running through the finish arch at Onslow Oval. “The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will return to Camden in 2021, so I’m encouraging all children in our area to start training and get ready for another big event next year. This is a world class-event in the heart of our home and is a great opportunity to enjoy our facilities”. The second annual Camden Healthy Living Expo was held in conjunction with the TRYathlon at Onslow Oval, giving residents the chance to meet their local health and well-being providers. Young residents can now get ready for next year’s TRYathlon. Yuan, the Burger Slayer

Local business Orangeville Meat Co, located in Gregory Hills, came alive recently with hundreds of family and friends coming together for the OMC Big Mouth Burger Challenge. The much-hyped event involved 8 contestants putting it all on the line to see if they could finish a massive 2kg burger in 40 minutes. Yuan was eventually crowned the OMC Big Mouth Champion, after devouring the 2kg monster in a record 9 minutes! He took home a trophy, food voucher, t-shirt and his name is now displayed on the Wall of Fame. “The night united the community in celebration of an exciting and fun-filled event, and we were absolutely delighted. OMC would like to thank everyone that attended. Watch this space for our next event. We don’t want to give anything away just yet” said George Assoni, owner of Orangeville Meat Co. Keeping the Anzac Spirit Alive With this year’s Anzac Day ceremonies around the country cancelled due to coronavirus, families and friends will not be coming together for Dawn Services. However, we can still remember those Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought in the First World War and this can be done through observing a minute’s silence and sharing stories. There has even been a collective idea that, whilst we all practice social distancing, we can each stand on our driveways at home at 11:00am and observe a minute’s silence whilst facing west. This act of solidarity shows that we are respectful of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country as well as showing our resilience. My heart always fills with pride sharing stories of my Great Uncle, Private Harold Burns. He was in the 2nd Battalion AIF from 1916 to 1919 and enlisted as a teenager. To us, he was a hero whose bravery was of the highest order. This year, I’ll continue telling my Great Uncle’s story to my children and we can now use this time to research and read more about him and our Anzacs. We may also watch a documentary together. Anzac Day 2020 can still be a time of reflection for those soldiers who sacrificed their lives and died in the war. Keep sharing their stories so that the spirit of Anzac remains.

Our Next-Gen Rotarians The idea of forming a new Rotary Club in the Macarthur area began in early 2018 and soon gained momentum with the passing months. In September 2018, 21 people voted to commence the new Club and on 9th October that year, the Rotary Club of Gregory Hills Next-Gen was granted it’s charter by Rotary International. Since then, membership has grown to 28 people from diverse backgrounds in our local community. Membership is open to people living in or having a connection to the Gregory Hills and surrounding areas. “Next-Gen clubs tend to attract fewer retirees and therefore need to conduct Rotary projects and meetings that successfully cater for a diverse group of active volunteers who perhaps may not have as much available time as the traditional club” said Tony Bonanno, President of the Rotary Club of Gregory Hills Next-Gen. “To make it easier for members to participate, our meetings are less formal, yet still focused on getting things done in the community. We’ve also relaxed the meeting attendance requirements so that members can make themselves more available for contributing to active projects” added Tony. Currently, the average age of the Rotary Club of Gregory Hills Next-Gen’s members is 42 and there is a 60/40 female/male split. This makes the local club quite unique in the Rotary world. Since their launch, the Club has participated in several projects including: • Supporting the local Headspace Centre with the purchase of case management software, with funds raised through the inaugural Battle of the Bands event; • Providing a cache of books to the new Yandeloro School in Narellan; • Supporting the Dressed for Success fundraising initiatives; • Sending several 14 to 16-year-old teenagers to RYPEN, the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment, on their first journey towards developing leadership abilities; • Funding a “Teacher-in-a-Box” self-contained learning intranet for a remote school in the Philippines, and • Collaborating with their neighbouring Rotary Clubs to present the Police Office of the Year Awards for the Camden and Campbelltown Local Area Commands. They are also currently working on sending hospital equipment to the Grace Maternity Hospital, that is under construction in Voi, Kenya. If you would like to know more about the Rotary Club of Gregory Hills Next-Gen, visit them on Facebook at www. facebook.com/rcgregoryhills.

Youth Haven Created at Brand New Park A youth haven in the heart of Oran Park, the Julia Reserve Youth Precinct, has been unveiled and opened. A fun-filled day to celebrate the opening of the brandnew precinct, located on Peter Brock Drive in Oran Park, was held last month and was welcomed by the local community. The day’s festivities included professional skating demonstrations, skate, scooter and BMX competitions and prizes and a free barbecue. The park, designed and built by Greenfields Development Company and Landcom, includes the area’s second skate park, a parkour facility, multi-use courts, kick-about areas, ping-pong tables and much more. Local professional scooter rider, Warick Beynon, said he was astounded by the skate park. “Trinity Skateparks was contracted to deliver this epic project in Oran Park, and I couldn’t be more stoked for

how this skate park has turned out” Mr Beynon said. “All these pro riders including myself came out to the opening event and it was an amazing day for western Sydney and the local community”. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the facility gave local young people the chance to enjoy the outdoors and remain active. “Julia Reserve is a fantastic addition to our local parks and facilities that will allow our residents something to enjoy close to home” Cr Fedeli said. “Our local young people now have another fantastic facility where they can enjoy the skate park, play ping pong or basketball”. Greenfields Development Company General Manager Mick Owens said he was proud to deliver the new youth facility. “This is a great example of the working partnership between Landcom, Greenfields Development Company and Camden Council and is the result of a strong community engagement process and working with great designers” Mr Owens said. “Julia Reserve Youth Precinct is an incredible new addition to the existing facilities in Oran Park Town”. r Feature Article: [Cover] The skate park is a great addition to the local community [Above] Officials at the opening | Images Supplied by Camden Council

TRN House Oran Park Town’s First Commercial Building Opens Camden LGA’s first standalone commercial building known as TRN House, has just opened. TRN House stands alongside the existing Oran Park Podium retail and commercial precinct and will be the latest addition to Oran Park Town’s growing commercial hub. Mark Perich of Greenfields Development Company in Oran Park Town said, “TRN House is the first A-Grade equivalent standalone commercial space offered for sale or lease in the Camden LGA”. “We’re particularly pleased that the entire ground floor will be dedicated to the provision of medical services. Expanding the Integrated Primary Health Care Centre at Oran Park provides more medical services right to the community’s doorstep”. The building consists of 6 x 1500m2 levels and 300+ car parking. “Much of the building is now occupied, though there are suites available” Mr Perich said. “TRN House is in close proximity to the new Western Sydney Airport and is located adjacent to a future rail station and this has sparked a lot of interest from businesses looking to take advantage of its location” he added. Once fully occupied, it is expected that this building will bring between 500-600 office jobs with another 100+ indirect jobs to the area providing an enormous benefit to the local community. Major tenants of the building are TRN Group, Dartanyon Homes, Shire Medical Imaging, Gearbox, Stone Real Estate and Strata Plus. v TRN House | Image: Justin Mackintosh

PARENTS CORNER

Rec Alley Continues its Winning Roll

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

Are You A Yeller? A lot of parents say that they are. You ask the kids to do something. They don’t do it. You get louder. And louder, And louder. Until you are threatening to take their phone, iPad, or a privilege away from them. Is it working for you? We get locked into patterns of behaving and interacting, and frequently they don’t work, so we keep doing them. Negative cycles lead to poor relationships, poor behaviour, conflict, and resentment. And what is the child learning from it? Einstein said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Often, we only need to make a small change to change the outcome. What would happen if you didn’t yell? What else could you do to change the quality of the interaction? Put yourself in your child’s shoes, and ask yourself how you would like to be approached. What would you like your child to learn and how could you role model it? Dare to be different.

School Holidays: Routine and Rest As first term draws to an end, many families have settled into a good routine for home and school. It is often at this time over the school holidays, that we can take a breather and reset after a busy couple of months. How do we manage time for rest and enjoyment without losing the solid routine that we have worked so hard to get right? Balance and moderation are crucial. Children need a break from the expectations of school, particularly those children who struggle to ‘keep it together’ all day at school. Often those children are also the ones who don’t cope well with change so it can be difficult. Keeping some things consistent, like bedtime and mealtimes, can be a fabulous way of maintaining balance. Giving children some autonomy during the day to pick and choose which activities they do at what time; provides some independence they do not normally get at school. If you choose to have a total break from routine and relax eating habits and bedtimes over the holidays, try to make sure that a few days before school goes back that you bring it back to the school routine so that the transition back to term two is smooth. It’s all about balance. At school, most children are fairly active and after school sports and activities usually exemplify that during term time. As some sports and activities don’t run during the holidays, encourage your child to keep active but to also have rest. It is okay to spend a day chilling out watching movies – it’s just not healthy if it is every day for two weeks. Going for a walk or bike ride or playing outside on the trampoline are great ways to get moving. Moderation in all areas will help to keep balance in order to settle back into the term after the short break. r Have fun but keep some routines to ease transition | Image: www. pexels.com. Gregory Hills based gymnastics club, Rec Alley, has been awarded the Large Club of the Year 2019 Award at the annual Gymnastics NSW Awards Night for the second year in a row. Rec Alley has been recognised for its continual club growth, staff development and coaching initiatives. Rec Alley’s director, Joel Anderson, attributed winning the award to the passion and dedication of the club’s coaching and management team. “Winning the award is recognition of Rec Alley’s coaching and management team who have worked tirelessly over the last three years. We’ve focused a lot of our efforts on our team, growing from 19 to 37 locals, and implemented coach development and wellbeing programs. “The team has worked tirelessly on innovating our programs, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive”. Rec Alley recently announced it’s working on opening a second club at 16 Swettenham Road, Minto. Rec Alley Minto will feature over 800m2 of gymnastics floor space, including all new gymnastics equipment with sprung floor, a 12 metre tumble tramp, a strength and conditioning zone, and a dedicated Kinder or pre-school age development floor. Rec Alley’s general manager, Ozren Vukelic, is excited about the prospect of servicing the wider Macarthur Region with a quality and community-centric gymnastics program. “With two clubs across the growing Macarthur Region, we will have the opportunity to engage a lot more children and their families in our programs. And, provide plenty of opportunities for local employment too. “Rec Alley has always been driven to improve the health and wellbeing of local kids, their families and the community. We strongly believe gymnastics is the best start to an active life”. r Coach Gabbi and the Rec Alley Gymnasts | Image Supplied by Rec Alley

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Many, many local small businesses are facing extinction if the current climate of social distancing results in us not using their services or buying their products. Their survival depends not only on their actions, but the actions of governments, lending institutions and YOU their customer. Many are adapting to the new rules of the retail, hospitality and service industries. By necessity they’re getting creative with how they operate and continue to do so. Banks and governments are doing their bit, and this is where we as customers come in! If you’re in a position to offer support, lets get imaginative. Why not shop for Christmas now? Buy gift vouchers from the local beautician that’s been forced to close their doors, buy online from local stores, order take away or keep your membership current at the local gym, until they return to business as ‘usual’. All these things will help. We’re also doing things differently here at the Gazette. Why not jump online and follow our Facebook pages where we’ll be interacting with the community on how you’re getting through, whether it be home-schooling, celebrating Easter in a tent in your backyard or a birthday celebration via a video hook up. We are all in this together, no-one is exempt. ‘Stay strong and make them wonder how you’re still smiling’.
