Award Winning Local Businesses Local businesses were recognised for their great service and achievements in last month’s 2018 Camden Wollondilly Local Business Awards and we were lucky to have two of them in our very own backyard! Extract Espresso in Gregory Hills were ecstatic to receive their award in the Outstanding Café category, whilst their neighbours Grima Bros Wholesale Produce took out two awards, the best in the Fruit and Vegetable Shop category and the major award on the night for the title of Camden Business of the Year. A huge accomplishment given that they have only been open for just over one year. Both Gregory Hills businesses have proven to be ever so popular with our local communities and are always bursting at the seams with customers. Extract Espresso owner Celestino (Tino) Pangallo was overwhelmed and so grateful for this amazing acknowledgement and very proud of his team. For anyone who has visited this welcoming café, tasted his amazing Campos coffee or experienced his friendly staff, they can understand why his award is now sitting front and centre for all to see. The Local Business Awards is an annual event that acknowledges great businesses that go above and beyond offering the best services, products and all-round experiences. Businesses first need to be nominated, then Extract Espresso’s Tino Pangallo with his Award | Image Supplied by Tino Pangallo. Article: Renee Garcia.

Let’s Play Ball! The Camden Red Sox Baseball Club is the largest club participating in the Macarthur Baseball League. Formed in 2013, the club has quickly grown and in its short 5-year history has won the Club Championship twice. The Red Sox have teams participating in competitions from ages 4 up to seniors and the hugely popular Friday night over 35’s competition. The summer season is just around the corner, commencing the first weekend in September. The local club recently held its annual Try T-Ball and Baseball days late last month at Hilder Reserve in Elderslie. The days were free for families to come and try some of the skills used to play baseball. There was a sausage sizzle and lots of fun activities for the family, where they also took registrations for the upcoming season. Last season, the club had over 300 registered players and fielded over 25 teams. Of most excitement to the club was the increased popularity in the Aussie T-Ball and T-Ball age groups. These age groups are their littlest players starting at 4 years old. They play as part of a non-competitive introductory version of the game designed to teach the basic skills and promote fun. “We are very excited to see another year of growth for the club and are hoping to increase our ranks again at the Aussie T-Ball, T-Ball and Zooka levels. We aim to give our members not just a sport to play on the weekend, but a culture they can be proud of and a community to be part of” said Matt Redman, President of the Camden Red Sox Baseball Club. “The best part of being President of the club is getting to see the kids out on the field each week at training and the games, having fun, being healthy and forming lifelong friends. Getting to see some of the kids join us at the younger age groups and go on to play representative levels and eventually seniors grade, knowing that we have helped them on that journey is what it is all about” ended Matt. Team Momenta MS Sydney to the Gong Ride Chris Azzopardi, Michael Ferella, Anthony Fenech, An Tran, Adam Coates and Tony Reitano are suiting up (in lycra) and training hard getting ready to ride the 82km MS Sydney to the Gong Ride this November. Oran Park's Team Momenta have set their sights high with a fundraising goal of $10,000. Can they do it? Will they exceed it? They need your help! Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system. MS affects over 25,000 in Australia and more than two million people are diagnosed worldwide. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. Roughly three times as many women have MS as men. There is currently no known cure for MS however there are a number of treatment options available to help manage symptoms and slow progression of the disease. At the beginning of July, Team Momenta officially passed the half way point towards their $10,000 fundraising goal and are currently sitting on $5,345.00 raised! This put them in 7th place on the Top Teams list of over 100 teams. Head on over to their Facebook and Instagram pages (www.facebook.com/MomentaAdvisors/ and www. instagram.com/momentaadvisors/) for updates, stats and yes there will be photos of men in lycra! They greatly appreciate all the donations they have already received. You can donate at: https://www.msgongride.org. au/team/TeamMomenta. Oran Park Library Now Open As the iconic author Dr Seuss would say “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go” and that we can with the mind blowing new Oran Park Library that was officially opened late June. Camden Mayor Lara Symkowiak along with her beautiful growing family were front and centre to address all excited onlookers, as the doors were opened and another milestone for Oran Park was written into our history. “This facility will support existing and future communities with lifelong learning opportunities and a place to socialise and interact well into the future” Cr Symkowiak said. “It is an innovative, creative space and stands as an example of how Camden is evolving, and the great spaces we are producing” she said. A fun-filled family event that catered for all ages, started with a traditional smoking ceremony and cutting of the ribbon. Hundreds of locals then finally experienced the multi-million dollar hi tech, interactive creative space that houses hundreds of books and learning materials for all to share. The kids were entertained with garden games, arts and craft tables and motorised cars outside. Gone are the days of boring spaces and only printed books. Oran Park Library is set out with segmented areas to enable different stages of learning. It features a new modern space of 3D printers, creative studios, interactive screens and walls and lots of touch and feel spots that will keep those young or old busy hands and minds interested for hours. Following on from their ongoing theme, it wouldn’t have been the same without the reference of our towns history to be incorporated with the clever artwork spread around made from car and motorcycle parts and the grid motifs on the carpet and walls. As a growing area that houses many young families, this is another great asset to our community that will benefit our future and help to instil a love of books and reading in our young children. Oran Park Library is located next to the Camden Council administration building at 72 Central Avenue in Oran Park. It is open to the public Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30am - 5:00pm, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30am - 8:00pm and Saturday from 9:00am - 3:00pm. Open day at Oran Park Library | Image Supplied by Camden Council. Thinking Caps On! Camden Meals on Wheels is a not-for-profit charity that is here to help the elderly with meals, social support and transport. They provide hot, chilled and frozen meals in 2 different sizes, as well as soup and desserts. The social support programs they have are for both individual support and group environments. They can provide transport to anywhere in the Camden LGA to help people go to a doctor, shop or even things like a hairdresser. Camden Meals on Wheels is holding a Trivia Night on Saturday 25 August 2018 from 6:30pm at the Camden Civic Centre. On the night, they will not only have 8 rounds of questions, but there will also be some surprise question sheets with prizes. There will be a prize for the best table name and, to top it all off, there is $1,000 for the team with the most points after the 8 rounds of trivia. There are lots of raffles and auctions, with all money raised going directly to helping Camden Meals on Wheels purchase a new facility. This new facility will not only allow them to help more people in the Camden LGA but also introduce new programs that they currently struggle to do due to the size of their current premises. So, if you’re after a great night out with lots of fun while helping a worthwhile charity, go to www. camdenmealsonwheels.com.au or simply ring 4655 6822 and buy your ticket for $30 or get some friends and family together and purchase a table for $240.  Image: www.pexels.com

Eleanor Cook is a beautiful, vibrant young woman from Oran Park, who at the age of 23 has struggled with health issues for a big part of her life. It has taken Ellie many years of doctors’ visits and testing to be diagnosed with Lupus. Ellie attributes this process to the autoimmune disorder being so complex and hard to understand, that it is often referred to as an ‘Invisible Disease’. Her broad range of symptoms include hair loss, extreme tiredness, muscular and joint pain, stiffness and memory exhaustion (brain fog). Although it is sometimes a struggle for Ellie to get out of bed in the mornings due to her chronic pain, she is determined to remain positive and live life to its fullest. She is a local Primary school teacher who loves her job and enjoys the fun and laughter the children in her class bring into her life every day. Ellie was recently married to her sweetheart of 9 years and she looks forward to the prospects of one day possibly starting a family. “I try to maintain a decent quality of life by managing my disease through plenty of rest, daily exercise, eating well and pain medication. I describe my disease as feeling like a young person living in an old person’s body” Ellie said. Ellie would like to raise awareness of Lupus and give hope to fellow sufferers out there. She finds solitude and support through social network groups on Instagram such as The Tired Girl Society, #lupusawareness and #fibromyalgia. Ellie also supports fundraising events that help research for Lupus. This includes the upcoming City to Surf on Sunday, August 12th, where you can run for charity or log on to www.city2surf.com. au/raising-money/ and donate to The Lupus Association of NSW Inc. School Struggles Is your child having difficulty learning at school? Perhaps they try to avoid going or misbehave in class because they can’t do the work. When a child is struggling, it can impact the whole family. Firstly, please know you and your child are not alone. Secondly, there are ways you can manage and improve the situation. It is important to grasp an understanding of which areas your child is experiencing difficulty. Children struggle academically for numerous reasons, so it is imperative to pinpoint the exact cause as the road to take is dependent on the root cause. This process may be lengthy, but it is best to cover all bases. The first port of call is your child’s school and often a report card will give a good indication of the areas that need addressing. Unfortunately, this information may give you the deficits but not explain the ‘why’. Attending the parent-teacher interviews and asking for more specific information will help guide your course of action. Often, teachers will refer students to the school learning support team for individual programs and integrated assistance in the classroom. In some cases, schools may recommend you take your child to see a specialist. Do not worry if your child’s teacher suggests this, it is useful to partake in assessments and appointments to exclude specific behavioural disorders, learning disabilities or impairments that are the underlying reason for issues at school. It may be appropriate to visit with speech therapists, occupational therapists, paediatricians, tutors, psychologists, audiologists and/or optometrists – depending on the recommendation of the school or the areas that require further investigation. This extensive list may seem overwhelming, but it is not intended as a mandatory list of what to do but rather a

recommendation of where to go to get further assistance. These services will often suggest ways you can support your child’s learning at home, ways the school can adjust learning to cater for your child’s individual needs and equip you with knowledge and tools to be an advocate for your child’s learning based on the information they obtain. With a significant understanding and appropriate strategies and services in place, your child has a greater chance of improvement and achieving his or her personal best.

Oran Park’s Jaz Acorn is an amazing mum of three, who works full time in School Administration. Although Jaz has her hands full, she has managed to push herself through an inspiring body transformation, losing a massive 30 kilograms in under 3 years. Jaz admits to struggling with body image and a healthy relationship with food for most of her life and the decision for change came after the birth of her second daughter. Jaz hit a low point when she started to realise she didn’t like seeing her own image in the mirror or in photos. “I had an overwhelming feeling of wanting to be a better role model for my daughters" she said. Looking lean, fit and gaining health has come with a dedication to eating well, with the help of Weight Watchers and through an ambition to get moving. She accredits her motivation to exercise to “doing something I love that makes me feel good”, which is why she does a Dance fit class with Shane’s Crew, twice a week at Harrington Park Public School. Jaz also uses an online, 28-minute workout app to tone up at least three times a week. She is determined to stay on the road to a healthy future and admits she never wants to go back to how she looked or felt before. Jaz finds inspiration every day in her family and the desire to be the best version of herself, to be the wife her husband married and the mother her children deserve. Jaz admits that on her journey, “You have to be a little selfish, but ultimately that is what caring for yourself takes because, in the end, you must live in your own skin and love who you are”.  Jaz’s amazing transformation | Image Supplied. PET CHAT

Article Written + Submitted by: Dr Jenni Green | University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden | A: 410 Werombi Road, Camden | NSW | 2570 P: 4655 0777

August is Pet Dental Month Just like human teeth, only half of your pet’s teeth are visible above the gum line. That’s why it is important that your pet – just like you at the dentist – has a radiograph (x-ray) when they have a dental check performed. A radiograph will show your vet any diseases or issues going on below the gum line such as fractures or abscesses, and whether the bone around the teeth is healthy. Having a radiograph enables an accurate treatment plan to be developed and a complete set of options to be given to you for your pet. Cats in particular have a peculiar habit of dissolving their own teeth. This is called a “resorptive lesion and is very painful. Diagnosing the stage of these lesions changes how we treat them. Without X-rays, treatment is often more invasive. We recognise that finances are an important part of decision making so to help you provide the best quality of care for your cat or dog, Uni Vets Camden is offering FREE radiographs valued at $180 with every dog or cat dental scale and polish during August, Pet Dental Month. Pet Dental Month is an initiative of the Australian Veterinary Association, who use the month as an opportunity to remind pet owners of the benefits of annual dental health checks and preventative dental care. If you are worried about the procedure and the costs involved, please come and see us for more information. To book a free dental consultation, call 02 4655 0777.

Three Steps To Help Your Business Finish Strong in 2018 August. Where’s the year gone? If you’re like many business owners, you started the year with ambitious growth plans but, as the year’s progressed, you wound up spending more time working ‘in’ your business rather than ‘on’ it and your bottom line is the nagging reminder. It’s not too late to finish strong. Imagine if you could consolidate and leverage the data within your business to achieve 2x, 3x improvement. I’m saying change nothing. Simply consolidate and leverage data. Earlier this year I sat with the CEO of a newly listed company as he analysed his figures. He had painstakingly crunched the numbers he felt would help guide him toward improved profits for the year and had come up with his answer. We spoke for five minutes, looked at his data from a different perspective and applied some minor tweaks. Five minutes, data and perspective was all it took to add $1.657M to his bottom line. We changed nothing, simply leveraged data. It’s achievable.

Here’s three steps to help you achieve 2x, 3x improvement this year: 1. Consolidate Your Data. Start by consolidating data across your business so you have a complete view of what’s really going on. Fragmented data will blind you. 2. Look At Your Core. Investigate core areas of your business to plug the leaks and eliminate waste. Look at the daily practices that keep your wheels turning – supply chain, accounts, customers. 3. Analyse Your Data. Look at what the data is telling you. Avoid the trap of letting emotion and ego distort your view of the facts and figures. Companies who consolidate and leverage data consistently achieve 2x growth compared to those who don’t. Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Some people who like to selectively read the Gospels would want us to believe that Jesus’ ministry was “super successful” and that during his years of public ministry, Jesus achieved all that he set out to do. However, as we see in Mark’s Gospel account of Jesus’ visit to his hometown of Nazareth, Jesus had his bad days and it didn’t always go to plan. As American scripture scholar Elizabeth Ann Stewart reminds us, Nazareth – Jesus’ hometown – is not only a geographic location we could find on Google Maps, but it is a symbol of narrow-mindedness. For as we heard in the Gospel, those who would have known Jesus best - his friends, neighbours, even members of his own extended family were among the people who could not accept him, because he didn’t fit into their framework of reality. In other words, instead of seeing in Jesus’ face the face of God, the

people of Jesus’ hometown saw only the face of a carpenter’s (1) son. So what can you and l learn from this encounter between Jesus and the people of his hometown? Well I think the village’s short-sightedness challenges you and me to examine the lenses with which we view others. For if we examined our consciences, I think we would acknowledge that all too often (either consciously or unconsciously) you and I can judge others (especially those nearest and dearest to us) by what we already know about them or what we think we know. Could it be possible that we are missing God’s presence because it is too simple, too ordinary or not dramatic enough? We are called to recognise the Creator not in supernatural visions or in extraordinary events, but (as one author so beautifully says): “in the ordinary gift of life that is imbued with the presence of God”.

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park NSW 2570

Jesus for the Curious Jesus of Nazareth is one of the most talked about and revered human beings of history. A man who grew up in the far north of Roman occupied Israel in a hilly village with a dad who worked a trade. Having begun to teach later in life (around his 30s) he returned home and the Bible records his reception like this; “Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” So what do we see? Something amazing had been done by this ‘son of Joseph’ but this recognition was mixed with scepticism and questions that naturally arose - “we know this bloke.. how

did this happen?” Does the life of Jesus raise questions for you? We love questions at NewLife. Each term I run a course called, Jesus for the Curious. Over four Tuesday nights we explore the life of Jesus from the original sources. We welcome questions, we treat scepticism with respect, we engage in discussion. If you’re keen to consider Jesus again for yourself as an adult then this is a great place to start. Having run the course dozens of times for people with lots of different starting points, I’m convinced that you’ll enjoy the journey. If you’re keen to join me then we’ll be meeting up at the Church for the first week on Tuesday August 7th at 7:30pm. Bring your questions - the teacher from Nazareth is worth a couple of hours of investigation.

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST

As I write this, I can't help but think that the countdown is now on. While I enjoy winter immensely, there's always a point where Winter has worn out it's welcome... and if you're anything like me... that's about now! The countdown to Spring is just around the corner! Just think, warm days, the sun is shining, the flowers are beginning to blossom, the grass is returning to it's lush state... ahhhh, I can almost 'smell it'. It's simple, but true "We rise by lifting others". For now, curl up under the blankie in the warmth of the heater, and enjoy your Community News.
