No Place Like Home Singer/songwriter Ria Brcic loves the local community, so much so, that her latest single ‘Home By The River’ was inspired by growing up in Camden and her longing to come home. Home By The River, which has a newly released music video and is available on music streaming and downloading services, is a song that has changed Ria’s life and the way she looks at it. “Home By The River was written a couple years ago, whilst I was living overseas on student exchange. I was longing to be home which inspired me to write about my home by the river and my town, Camden. By channelling in on my own experience of feeling homesick came appreciation for everything life had offered me. In the midst of tears and laughter came this song and I think the biggest realisation for me after writing it was how lucky I am to have a place to call home” Ria told the Oran Park Gazette. “Growing up in the local area, there are so many great events that are held every year such as Camden Show, Winterfest, Live and Local and the Jacaranda Festival. These events help bring the community out and encourages everyone to support locals and local talent. When I play gigs here, I definitely feel at home. For me, releasing Home By The River was also something that enabled me to give back to my community and my town Camden” she explained. Having not come from a musical family, it was a surprise to everyone that Ria had such a deep love for music at such a young age. Since she could speak, she always loved to sing. She began singing lessons at the age of 8, before picking up the guitar only to soon put it back down. When she picked up the guitar for a second time, Ria found a driven willingness that would see her singing and playing songs. Throughout her time exploring folk/country and bluegrass music, Ria has been influenced by artists and bands such as The Lumineers, Leonard Cohen, First Aid Kit, Linda Ronstadt and Gabrielle Aplin. “Having drawn influences from such an eclectic range of artists and eras, I think it has truly shaped my music into something that is uniquely my own sound. What I love most about folk/country music typically, is the ability to tell a story in such an angelic way. I really enjoy writing about people, places, history and of course love and contrasted with a great melody and feel, it’s a genre that can create such a range of emotions” she said. “The past couple of years I have been doing a lot of songwriting and now finally I have a list of songs that I’m really happy with and I would love for them to be heard. Now I’m working on translating these songs into great singles, which really comes down to the production of them. As I work through each song with my producer, I’m finding my own sound even more, which for me is the most important thing. This is all just the beginning for me!” she ended. U

The Quickest way round is on the Bitumen The Quickest way round is on the Bitumen: The History of the Oran Park Circuit by Neville Beyer is a book that was written to tell the story of the development of the Oran Park Motor Racing Circuit from 1962 to 2010 and the stories from the background, focusing on the people behind the scenes rather than the well documented racing results. It was written as a tribute to the thousands of volunteers who made the action possible and as a reminder of just how Motor Racing in Australia had changed and evolved. For enthusiasts and lovers of Motor Racing, this book is for you. It is full of personal histories and stories. Whilst Oran Park Motor Racing Circuit is now gone and has since been replaced with families living where the Grandstand stood, the current housing layout has paid homage to the wonderful and rich history of the sport. This includes famous names adorning all the roads, parks and various place names – right down to the “The Straight” which follows the original straight that roared away from the Grandstand! Oran Park was a circuit which catered for motorsport as against just Motor Racing and we will probably never see anything like it again. The Quickest way round is on the Bitumen: The History of the Oran Park Circuit is available from the following website: www. oranparkracing.com.au and stockists:

Harrington Park Kennel Volunteer Recommends 'Hound Love' Harrington Park volunteer Prasad Lokanadan has been with Greyhound Rescue for over a year and does Sunday mornings at its kennels near Camden. “I joined because I enjoy volunteering and giving back to the community. Also, I wanted to learn more about the breed as I have two greyhounds of my own” said Prasad. Prasad said he’d highly recommend volunteering at Greyhound Rescue kennels. “You get to interact with many beautiful dogs and with many wonderful people working together towards a common goal of finding the next happily ever after home for our kennel kids”. He said he finds from the moment he starts his shift that working with greyhounds is therapeutic. “I always end up forgetting about my troubles. It’s also great to be working side by side with other volunteers who are likeminded and enjoy caring for the dogs” said Prasad. "You learn a lot at the kennels, like how to provide enrichment activities, as it avoids the dogs getting bored". Prasad explained that if people are interested, the AM shift is 8:00am to 11:00am, whilst the afternoons are 2:00pm to 5:00pm, seven days a week. "We really need more volunteers on the Tuesday PM shift, as well as Wednesday and Thursday AM and PM" ended Prasad. Volunteers can commit to as little as one shift/month and all help is appreciated. Would-be volunteers can apply and watch a video about volunteering at Greyhound Rescue's kennels at greyhoundrescue.com.au/get-involved/volunteering. Greyhounds are very placid, sensitive dogs. Most need one 20-minute walk daily. They’re perfect for families or anyone who needs a furry friend. Greyhound Rescue can be found on Facebook at www. facebook.com/GreyhoundRescueNSW. U

Local children’s book author Sarah Palmer has that rare talent of being able to capture a child’s imagination and to take them away to another place in time. With two books, The Great Emu Chase and The Great Camel Race already published, she’s back after a break from writing to share her amazing storytelling once again. “As an early childhood educator, I read stories every day and shared in the joys and benefits that books bring to young children. I developed a real love for picture books and wanted to contribute myself and leave a legacy for my own children, so they can share my stories with their children in years to come. I also want to inspire children, my own and others, to follow their dreams and believe that they can achieve anything they set their mind to” explained Sarah about why she writes. The self-published author’s two book series, The Great Emu Chase and The Great Camel Race, are lively, rhyming picture books that involve repetitive patterns and humour. The first book, The Great Emu Chase, takes the reader on an adventure through an Australian wildlife park. Gar, a spritely grandfather, pursues a daring emu who steals his chips and experiences several amusing encounters with other animals along the way, as he tries to get them back. This book has a fun refrain to keep young children engaged. The Great Camel Race is the second book in the series. Gar takes the ride of his life on the back of the prize-winning camel, Matilda, as he attempts to win the greatest prize of the year. After defeating the other camels through mishap and adventure, it’s the antics of the menacing emu that risk Gar’s chance to win the cup. Right now, Sarah has another book series that she would love to see published, as well as a single title book. “Ultimately, I aspire to gain a publishing contract through a traditional publishing company, as self-publishing is very costly, and marketing can be difficult. However, if I am not successful with this, I will move forward with my next book hopefully towards the end of this year. The advantage of self-publishing is that it moves at my pace and I maintain control over the entire process, so the book will look exactly how I want it to look. The first step in the process will be to find a new local illustrator for the project” she said. Anyone who is interested in purchasing a copy of Sarah’s books, or would like to find out more information, can find her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ sarahpalmerchildrensbooks/. She has recently started a YouTube channel, Sarah Palmer, that has videos of her books being read aloud, as well as book trailers and tips on reading with children. Sarah is also available to conduct readings of her books at local playgroups, preschools and primary schools. U

Oran Park Probus Club Oran Park Probus Club would like to invite anyone who is retired or semiretired to come along to one of our Meetings, have a coffee and chat to some of our members and see what it means to be a Probian. Probus aims to promote friendship, fellowship and fun among like-minded people. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month. Lunch follows at a prearranged venue for those members who wish to attend. There are regular “coffee and chats”, day tours, long tours, craft sessions and movie outings. Speakers at our Meetings cover a wide range of topics, some serious, some fun. At our last Meeting, we heard about Macular Degeneration which affects central vision and is the leading cause of blindness in Australia. Members were given an information package which included a tool to test for visual changes. In August our Speaker will display Geraniums and Pelargoniums and talk about their propagation. Come along and join us on August 6, 9.30 for 10am start. Meetings are held at the NewLife Church, corner of Central Avenue and Marcus Loane Way. With an ever-growing array of new platforms through which to express ourselves, it can be hard to find quiet. Recently I re-read an article*** that I think is worth sharing. It reminds us that: “Silence is an integral element of communication; in its absence, words rich in content cannot exist. In silence, we are better able to listen to and understand ourselves; ideas come to birth and acquire depth; we understand with greater clarity what it is we want to say and what we expect from others; and we choose how to express ourselves. Some might think that communication is, as a general rule, not silent … Many of us communicate in tweets and Facebook messages. I find my phone dinging and clanging and beeping and chiming for all different reasons throughout the day … so it’s anything but silent … Christian artist Sarah Kroger has a song called In the Silence where she describes the silent places of the heart: In the silence of the heart you speak, and your mercy is the air I breathe. You come to me in whispers and forgiveness sings. In the silence of the heart you speak; Lord, you speak. To the quiet of this room you come; I am captivated by this love. You light these darkened corners, and I’m overcome … Often we go through our busy lives expecting God to speak into our every day, and realise that it’s been weeks since we have stopped to listen. Sometimes the noise and panic that emerges during the silence is deeply uncomfortable. We hear our truth. Yet it’s worth it. Lord, I pray that you would speak into the silence of my heart, and I thank you for whatever it brings”. Source: *** www.australiancatholics.com.au/article/prayer-blog--in-the-silence-of-the-heart

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park NSW 2570

What’s The Story? We love stories - stories of success, stories of tragic failure, stories of romance, revenge, mystery stories. Whether they’re on Netflix, or in books on paper, stories capture the imagination and provide us with an escape. Every so often we come across stories that have an impact beyond the screen and page - they’re able to go beyond mere distraction and capture our hearts. These are the stories we retell ourselves that explain the world around us. Are we on a journey where making our kid’s lives the best that they can be is the overall narrative? Does your story tell you to survive the work week so that you can ‘really live’ when you get away with your family and your 4x4? Does your story say that education is the key to getting ahead? Does it say that getting everything together at home provides a safe and secure sanctuary to retreat to? Whether you recognise yourself in one of these, or have your own, each of us has a story that orients our days and directs our energies. Over the course of this term each Sunday we’ll be looking at a letter that was written to some people at Colossae (in modern Turkey) almost 2000 years ago. Why do that? Well we’re persuaded that there is a story that doesn’t require us to escape from our present life. A story that allows us to look at the world with all of its pitfalls, joys, griefs, and trials, and yet still live with hope. That’s the message we’ll be examining - complete with practical advice on parenting and marriages - which is grounded in the historical death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This great story which helps me engage with my world rather than escape from it. Come and find how it speaks to yours.

Located virtually on the corner of Gregory Hills Drive and Village Circuit, the new Gregory Hills sales office is now located on the other side of Il Sapore – the suburb’s first and most established café. Featuring a Woolworths, Our Medical Home Gregory

Hills, and approximately 20 specialty stores and retailers, the new Town Centre provides residents within Gregory Hills and surrounding areas with a convenient place to do their household shopping. The Town Centre is within easy walking distance of the sales office and has ample parking available. Want to visit the sales office and keep the kids occupied?
