He’s That Food Dood
Locally based disability support services business specialising in social and community participation activities.
With a genuine love of food that spans decades, local Tony Malaband AKA That Food Dood, enjoys nothing more than expressing himself in the kitchen. Add to this a successful podcast, blog, range of smallgood meats and sauces and you have one talented cook. “I have always loved food. Let’s face it, who doesn’t? I started cooking at the age of 5, when my Dad taught me how to make scrambled eggs and dinner out of what was available in the pantry. That was over 40 years ago. As the years went by, I would make my own versions of dishes, adding my own spin” explained Tony. Tony’s podcast, In the Kitchen with That Food Dood, chronicles home cooked recipes, where subscribers listen and cook along in real time. The blog is about his passion for food, adventure, and creativity. This gives him the opportunity to not only share his creations, but to also encourage readers to explore and make their own. “My signature dish is a seafood tasting plate. Butterflied king prawns with chilli, basil and garlic butter. Sea scallops with burnt garlic and dill butter. A squid tube stuffed with feta and pine nuts. Oysters with sesame oil, soy and chives and an old school prawn cocktail. Apart from that signature dish, I really just like simple homemade food with good ingredients I can play around with” he reflected. He has recently started making his own smallgood meats, such as salami, bacon, chorizo, kransky, twiggy sticks, bratwurst and duck prosciutto. Tony has also mastered his own steak sauce and is currently trialing a super, hot sauce. So, what advice does That Food Dood have for anyone learning to cook? “My advice would be to start simple. Learn from your mistakes, which I have done many times over the years. Taste as you go too, ALWAYS”. For more information about Tony, search ‘That Food Dood’ on Facebook, Instagram and Google. Keep an eye out for his series of videos soon on YouTube.

Local Student Finalist in National Competition Despite a global pandemic bringing the world to a stop, Interrelate’s express their feelings through annual Say No To Bullying Poster Competition has continued to encourage young people to create art in a supervised and safe environment. Local student Kaliyah Crampton from Oran Park Public School has been recognised as one of the 41 finalists in a special online event broadcasted nationally recently. With personal distancing restrictions and closed borders, the planned annual Awards Ceremony at NSW Government House could no longer go ahead, leading Interrelate to turn to online measures to bring the finalists; Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC, Governor of New South Wales; the Honourable Sarah Mitchell, Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning; Patricia Occelli, CEO Interrelate and competition sponsors, Faber-Castell together in a special online event that was broadcast on YouTube Premiere. “Helping young people to develop respectful relationships, with self, others and their environment is one of our key concerns and the driver for us creating this competition seven years ago” says Patricia Occelli. “In times of stress, it becomes even more important to help our young people develop strategies to manage difficult situations and ensure that they are able to respond with respect and understanding”. “Our poster competition helps children express themselves through art, which can get them to start talking and open the door for further conversations” she added. Kaliyah’s poster was one of just 41 artworks chosen as a finalist from the 5000+ posters received from over 100+ schools around the country. The theme for this year’s competition was “Celebrate our differences and make our world a more colourful place”; Kaliyah went on to say “I used colour to show the ways in which you can be happy because bright colours make you feel happier. I used the dots throughout my poster to represent the Aboriginal people all over Australia. The drops of colour below the tree show that when we spread kindness, everything blooms”. r Kaliyah Crampton’s artwork | Image Supplied
DOGGY BREATH IS NOT NORMAL! Did you know that when a cat or dog has dental disease, it often goes undetected? Why? Because a pet with dental disease is in pain long before they stop eating. Dogs and cats will not show they are in pain (this is a survival instinct). In fact, dogs and cats feel dental pain as much as we do. Dental disease is one of the most common problems in dogs and cats, with over 70%-80% over the age of 2 have some sort of dental disease. And if left untreated it can turn into periodontitis, which often results in tooth loss and serious damage in the later stages. Prevention is better than cure! One of the most efficient steps you can take to keep your pet’s mouth healthy is to schedule annual dental checks. At Macarthur Vet Group, we examine your pet’s teeth as part of their yearly health check. Dental checks, regular teeth brushing, and effective dental food will help keep your pet healthy and smiling! Our number one vet-recommended nutrition choice for complete dental care is Hill’s Prescription Diet t/d. The kibble uses a fibre matrix that gently scrubs away plaque and tartar to clean teeth and promote healthy gums every day, while your pet eats. So – when was the last time you checked your pet’s mouth? Our vet nurses conduct FREE dental checks! If you are concerned or would like to keep on top of their overall oral health, please visit www.macarthurvet.com.au to book online or give us a call at any of our 4 clinics.

An Eye for Nature They say that out of adversity comes opportunity, and that was certainly the case for Harrington Park photographer Jim Vouden, who took up the hobby as a way of giving him something to concentrate on when giving up smoking. Several years on and Jim has not looked back, as he now takes pride in capturing all the beauty in nature that Macarthur has to offer. “I took up photography as a serious hobby in about 2012, when I joined the Macarthur Photographical Society and was inspired by the members and their images. “Yes, it’s true that funnily enough it was to help me give up smoking, because if I was concentrating on photography, I was not thinking about smoking” explained Jim to the Oran Park Gazette. Jim’s favourite subjects to photograph can be found in nature, with birds and landscapes the two he likes to focus upon the most. With an abundance of areas to choose from to explore and photograph, Jim feels most at home right here in the Macarthur. “The areas I enjoy taking photos locally are around the Harrington Park Lakes, along the Camden Bike Track and at the Australian Botanic Gardens in Mount Annan. These are filled with amazing wildlife” Jim stated. Jim is yet to find that perfect photo, and it is that very moment that drives him to continue searching behind the lens. “In regard to the perfect photo, I am still working on this. What I do know is that it will have to include the subject, the light, the composition, and the camera settings” he ended. We can’t wait till Jim captures that moment. r A Blue Superb Fairy Wren at Harrington Park Lake | Image: Jim Vouden

Got a fussy eater?
Macarthur BMX Club was established in 1998 by a group of enthusiastic parents. Located at the Hilder Road Sporting Hub, Kirkham Park, Elderslie, the club has now grown to be one of largest clubs in Australia. BMX is a sport for the whole family with riders aged from 2 years old to 65+, where you can ride for fun or race for glory. Macarthur BMX has had club members represent across NSW, Australia and the World. With BMX being a yearround sport, they can cater for all. Join them for Saturday evening racing in the Spring and Summer months, and in Winter come and race Saturday afternoons. Macarthur BMX will be hosting a ‘Ride In2 BMX Day’ on Saturday 15th August from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Anyone who is interested in trying this great sport can come along and ride the track with the assistance of coaches and experienced riders. They will also have plenty of members on hand to answer any of your questions. All riders are welcome to attend, the only requirements include; bike (pedal or balance bike), long sleeve shirt and pants, helmet (street or full face) and gloves. Come along and experience what their great club and sports have to offer, but be careful, you might just get hooked. For more information, follow their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/macarthurbmx/ or email: macarthurbmx@gmail.com. r Macarthur BMX Club members | Image: https://www.facebook.com/ macarthurbmx/
The very best way to deal with eating difficulties is not to stress about it. Look at the positive. Rather than focusing on what he doesn’t eat, focus on what he does eat, and expand his range and variety ever so slowly. Look upon it in the spirit of adventure rather than with fear and dread. The mirror neurons in your child’s brain will pick up on your attitude and feelings. If you have anxiety about mealtimes, your child will smell the fear and respond accordingly. If he gets a lot of attention for his fussy eating, he will do more of it. One strategy is the back-up meal (Dr Thomas Phelan). You give your child tiny portions of the family meal. A teaspoon of everything, separated from each other on a small plate. The child must try what was on the plate. He can eat what he wants and leave what he wants, but he must give it a bit of a go. If he likes some of it, he can have more. Give descriptive praise for what he tries and eats. When he has had enough of that meal, if he is still hungry, he can ask for his back-up meal. The criteria for the back-up meal is that it is quick and simple to prepare, and somewhat nutritious. It could be as simple as a peanut butter sandwich or tinned spaghetti on toast. You don’t give descriptive praise if the child eats the back-up meal. This strategy can take a long while. Most of parenting is slow and consistent. When I tell people about the above strategy, they are concerned about the child “winning”. I advise parents to never start a war with their child over food – you will not win. The back-up meal is a positive way to increase your child’s tolerance for different tastes. If you would like more information, look up the Fussy Eating Resources on the Cancer Council NSW website. Also look up Dr Ellyn Satter’s ‘division of responsibility’ model. r

Macarthur FA Debut its Newest Club Gregory Hills FC
The Macarthur Football Association ticked off another milestone in the code’s return unearthing its newest club member in Gregory Hills FC based out at Cunningham Park. With the reboot of community football in full swing, Gregory Hills FC were one of the very delighted clubs who were over the moon upon seeing the season recommence which gave Club President Renato Cocchietto much to smile about. What makes Gregory Hills FC so unique is the fact that the club’s initial focus is on the development of the small sided game (MiniRoos), building teams of 5-10-year old’s from across the region. The purpose of starting with MiniRoos is to ensure the club is able to focus on new players to the sport as well as allowing them to grow within the club. As it stands, Gregory Hills FC has 132 registered players from the Under 5's to Under 10’s with the new club’s plans to grow even further in 2021 including youth teams and eventually senior squads. Macarthur Football Association’s General Manager Salv Carmusciano was out at Cunningham Park last month and saw first-hand what it meant to the next generation of our football stars. “It was an exciting day for the community and a long time coming. “It was a joy to watch so many happy boys and girls doing what they love”. Welcome to the Football family Gregory Hills.

Oran Park Probus Club
Probus Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand promote friendship, fellowship, and fun among retired and semi-retired people through regular meetings, activity groups, tours, and outings. Although all meetings and activities of Oran Park Probus Club are currently suspended, members have been able to connect to meetings via Zoom, at which we have continued our Speaker program. Our last speaker gave us an insight into his role as a CareFlight doctor. CareFlight is an organisation that continues to bring the hospital to the patient and is not just a means of patient transport. The Oran Park Probus Club committee continues to hold meetings and discuss possible activities we might be able to undertake when restrictions are eased. As most Probus Club members are in the vulnerable age group, it may be a while before there can be any large group gatherings or outings. We have four new members waiting to be inducted into the club, when we resume normal meetings. At that time, we will be able to welcome visitors to one of our meetings to find out more about Oran Park Probus Club. Meanwhile, if you have any queries about Probus or Oran Park Probus Club, please email oranpark@probusclubs.com.au or call on 0410 758755. r

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish I am sure some of you have had the experience as a couple of renting or buying your first home, only to find that while it was ok when there was only two people in the house, that when the children and grandchildren came along you needed to add an extra room or even move to something bigger. Just as this reality applies to domestic households, this is also a reality when it comes to our exponentially growing Catholic Parish of St Mary MacKillop, Oran Park – that was founded 5 years ago in June 2015. It has become clear that as the number of people wanting to gather for Sunday worship and other activities increases, extra room is needed. And so any of you who have walked or driven by our church located on the corner of Oran Park Drive and Catherine Park Drive may have noticed, we are in the process of building an ‘extra spare room’ (using the earlier analogy) to our Oran Park Catholic Church. This extension will increase the seating capacity from 250 to approximately 400 people all under the one roof. As we all know, this place that we call ‘home’ – Oran Park Town and its surrounding suburbs – is a place where a lot of building projects are going on … I pray that whatever we build, be it extensions to churches or our first home or a new business, will be an opportunity for each of us to build a community where (in the words of a contemporary hymn) “love can dwell and all can safely live … a place built of hopes and dreams and visions”. More information on this project, and ways that you can support it, can be found on our parish website: www.marymackillopparish.org.au. r

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park NSW 2570
Church is Open Again We’re back. It’s a big change to be able to say that our building is open and we’re holding in-person services again at 8:45am on a Sunday. Even as we open our doors, we’ll continue to stream our services on YouTube.com/NewLifeOranParkLive. Prior to COVID, we were running three services and we’re planning to bring them back one at a time. So, if you’d prefer 10:30am or 6pm, just check on our website to see which services are running. What can you expect when you come? We’re serious about the safety of everyone who attends and we’re using Trybooking.com to reserve places in the service. Of course, this is a massive change from the usual situation (you can still just turn up on the day!) but pre-registering will let us know if you’ve got kids and help us manage the social distancing requirements. You can find the link to book a spot on our website. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by our friendly welcomers, invited to sanitise your hands, and guided to a socially distanced seat. We are running a kid’s program and morning tea - but we won’t be singing yet due to government advice. Of course, all these plans are made with an eye to the current state of the virus. In a very dynamic environment, the staff at NewLife will follow all NSW Health directives on meeting sizes etc. Should anything change between the publication of this article and your wanting to come along, it will be reflected on our website. We’d love to see you, so please check in there before dropping by. You can find us at www.newlifeanglican.org.au or just search NewLife Oran Park on Facebook. Hope to see you in person or online really soon.

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST OK August... be kind! July brought with it a degree of uncertainty as we continue on through this COVID chapter of our ‘new look’ lives. Many have commented that we have taken two steps forward and four steps backward. It’s more important than ever to observe, learn and follow the rules. Keep your distance and wash, wash, wash your hands. Take care and remain vigilant for those around you, particularly those that are in known high-risk communities. Here at the District Gazette ‘We Live.Love. Local’ and take great pride in sharing stories that are local and relatable. We’re reaching out to (you) our readers for YOUR good news story. Do you have a story to share? A great achievement, a milestone, an accomplishment against all odds (during COVID)? An interesting career, a rare find, a talent, an unusual skill or hobby? We’d love to share your story, it might be exactly what our readers need to hear or know. Each month we receive a tonne of feedback which always puffs up our collars.... just like this one from Alison “It’s so nice to see the inclusion of Kid’s Corner in the Gazette!”..... aww thanks Alison, we’re glad you like our new look puzzle pages! Enjoy Your Community News. ‘Whatever you decide to do, make sure it makes you happy’.
