Topping Out Ceremony for Oran Park Town’s First Commercial Building

The practice of ‘Topping Out’ a new building can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian era, when a tree was placed on top of a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in its construction. Today, the tradition continues and is used to celebrate a project milestone. In keeping with this tradition, a topping out ceremony was held on Thursday 24th October to celebrate the completion of the highest portion of the building structure of Oran Park Town’s first standalone commercial building. “Whilst this ceremony celebrated a key milestone, it was also an opportunity for us to thank all the subcontractors,

consultants and suppliers who have been an important part of the delivery of this project” said George Bardas (CEO) of Richard Crookes Constructions. Once complete, the commercial building will be known as TRN House, named after TRN Group, a local, well-respected family owned company who have played a significant role in the development of Oran Park Town. Mark Perich of Greenfields Development Company in Oran Park Town said, “Once complete, TRN House will be the first A-Grade equivalent standalone commercial space offered for sale or lease in Oran Park Town”. TRN House will stand alongside the existing Oran Park Podium retail and commercial precinct and will be the latest addition to Oran Park Town’s growing commercial hub. “TRN House is in close proximity to the new Western Sydney Airport and is located adjacent to a future rail station and this has sparked a lot of interest from businesses looking to take advantage of its location. We’re particularly pleased that the entire ground floor will be dedicated to the provision of medical services to service our local community” said Mark Perich. The event was also be an opportunity to promote Pink Up Oran Park, a breast cancer awareness and fundraising campaign that supports the McGrath Foundation. Both Oran Park Town and Richard Crookes Constructions have thrown their support behind the campaign with various sites across Oran Park Town turning a shade of pink during the month of October. “It’s important to us to make a positive contribution to the communities that we work in” said George “and Oran Park Town also share this philosophy”. r

Merry Christmas AND A

HAPPY NEW YEAR from our team to you and yours! FESTIVE SEASON CLOSURE 9th December 2019 – 10th January 2020

A Time to Sing! Macarthur’s newest musical experience is here, with the newly formed Camden Musical Society (CMS) getting into the festive spirit of Christmas by creating a troop of carollers who will be performing in the local community. “We have chosen Christmas as the first chance to perform with some great singers lined up in a carolling troop. We will be performing as roving carollers at a number of community events during the season” said Craig Davidson, the President of Camden Musical Society. Camden Musical Society (CMS) is an exciting new not-for-profit theatrical group for Camden LGA. Camden Musical Society aims to develop upcoming local artists as well as provide a place for production skills development, while giving the local audiences a professional and first-class musical show experience. Supported by musical and creative mentors from the region, the Camden Musical Society will provide an opportunity for our budding creative youth and our enthusiastic community to participate both on stage and behind the scenes. The President of CMS, Craig Davidson has been involved in music theatre since the age of 11 and has participated in over 50 shows across the Sydney and Illawarra region. He has been involved in all areas of theatre production from stage design, sound and lighting design and operation, directing, musical directing, stage managing and performing. Craig said, “The development of theatrical and musical stage experiences is a fantastic way to come together and so many people can be involved in all facets of the production. Camden LGA has an exceptional amount of talent in the creative arts that has been starved of a supporting body and creative outlet locally. The talent from our area are travelling to other community theatres to perform. We haven’t had something like this in Camden for many years”. “We have been inspired by the limitations that we find in other groups and how many people actually want an opportunity to be involved” he ended. For more information on the Camden Musical Society, find them on Facebook, Instagram or their website www. camdenmusicalsociety.org. r

Happy 5th Birthday Oran Park Podium Last month, Oran Park Podium celebrated its 5th birthday. This very special occasion invited the community to celebrate with in centre entertainment by musical duo, The Bells and children’s activities including face painting by Disney’s Jasmine, magic show by Aladdin, meet and greet with Donald Duck and some incredible balloon art by the talented Matt Falloon. Visitors enjoyed special offers by Podium retailers as well as giveaways for the entire week of the birthday celebrations. A ceremony was held, where we heard from Theresa Fedeli, the Mayor of Camden and Mark Perich, Project Director of Greenfields Development Company, who took the time to thank Oran Park Podium retailers and the community for their support since the centre’s launch. As part of the celebrations, Oran Park Podium gave one lucky family the chance to win a trip to Disneyland California. The ceremony awarded Oran Park resident, Aileen Bangit and her excited young family this magical prize. The Podium is passionate about delivering an authentic, convenient experience with a strong community focus. Since its launch, the community have embraced the centre and have helped to make it the place it is today. Sharing this milestone with Podium retailers and the community was very special. Oran Park Podium now looks forward to Santa landing on Saturday 30th November with an ‘Arrival Spectacular’ planned. Following the success of last year’s ‘Breakfast with Santa’, two sessions are scheduled for Saturday 7th December, which invites children to dine with and enjoy story time with Santa. The centre is pleased to announce that it will be offering one free Santa photo again this year, redeemable via the Podium website and will also host Pet Photos with Santa. Event details and how to register can be located at www.oranparkpodium.com.au. r

Three Teens Arrested after Fire Deliberately Lit Three teenage boys were arrested after a grassfire was started in Sydney’s south-west last month. A passing motorist alerted authorities when he saw the fire in bush off The Northern Road at Harrington Park about 5.30pm (Sunday 17 November 2019). Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW and the RFS attended and had the fire extinguished by 6.15pm. Acting on information provided by members of the public, officers from Camden Police Area Command searched the vicinity and arrested two boys, aged 15 and 16, near Harrington Parkway. A third teen, aged 15, was arrested a short time later. All three were taken to Narellan Police Station and were interviewed by police in the presence of their support people. All are eligible to be dealt with under the Young Offender's Act. Three mobile phones and other items have been seized for forensic examination.

Supper with Spirit a Success!

KOBHI'S KITCHEN

Hi everyone! My name is Kobhi and I am 10 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen. Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook. P.S I hope you enjoy making this. Kobhi

Mini Christmas Puddings

Ingredients

One chocolate mud cake White chocolate (buds) One packet of raspberry lollies Method

1. You need a chocolate mud cake that is already made from the shops. Use a teaspoon to scoop the mud cake, like ice cream. Roll the mud cake into little balls. 2. Ask your helper to cut up a packet of raspberry lollies into small pieces. 3. Put the white chocolate into a microwave bowl. This next step is for your helper too, which is melting the chocolate. They need to reduce the power on the microwave to medium. Heat the white chocolate in the microwave for 30 - 90 seconds. 4. Remove the bowl from the microwave. Your helper needs to mix the white chocolate. It should be soft and not hard. Use a spoon to dab on little bits on to the top of the balls of chocolate mud cake. It looks like white frosting. 5. Put the cut up raspberry lollies on top of the white chocolate on the mud cake balls. 6. The mini Christmas puddings need to go in the fridge for an hour, until it sets. 7. Ready to serve.

Last month the District Gazette hosted their first ever fundraising event, Supper With Spirit, raising money for Lung Foundation Australia. Guests enjoyed an evening of delight as Ghost Whisperer Suzie used her spiritual gift of psychic mediumship to relay messages to loved ones. It was an emotional night full of laughing, crying and of course, coming together to support a great cause. The night was also an opportunity to raise awareness of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), which is a rare lung disease in which the tissue around the air sacs within the lungs become thickened and scarred. This scarring makes the lungs stiff which makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. This slows the efficient delivery of oxygen into the bloodstream where it is needed to be transported to the rest of the body. Idiopathic, suggests ‘no known cause’ and currently there is no cure for those suffering with IPF. There were many winners on the night with over $2,000 worth of prizes generously donated by Citadines Connect Sydney Airport, The Day Spa Penrith – Jorja James Spa, Salt Therapy Wellness Centre, Emu Wellness, NIX on Park Lane Jewelry, Elsker Oils with Julie, Aussie Grown Catering, Michal Gabriel Beauty and Brow, Our Penrith, Lavilin Australia, Michelle Munday (Lorraine Lea Independent Stylist), Essential Bodyworks and Action Organising. Overall, the evening was a great success with the District Gazette raising a grand total $3,000. All proceeds went directly to Lung Foundation Australia. r A sold out event for a worthy cause | Image: District Gazette. Article: Sara Drebber

Shining Bright for a Good Cause Oran Park is set to shine this festive season, with the South Circuit Christmas Lights returning for their 5th year in December. The popular local community event also helps to raise funds for charity, and they promise to be bigger and better. This year will see the lights run every night from the 1st of December, until after Christmas and 8 houses in South Circuit will take part with their displays of varying sizes. We are told that the man in the big, red suit is ready to pay a visit too! “We have all increased or displays, compared to last year. We are excited to have Santa visiting from the North Pole again on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in December. We may just have other nights that Santa will make surprise visits leading up to Christmas” said Travis Carstens, South Circuit Christmas Lights Organiser. “The ladies from Ciao Bella Premium Gelato will also be here on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. We’ll again be selling LED and glow products, with all of the proceeds going directly to the Sydney Children’s Hospital” smiled Travis. The group raise money for the Sydney Children’s Hospital through the Lights for Kids campaign. This is their 5th year of supporting the hospital and the important work it does to aid sick and injured children. Their endless hours of hard work have also been rewarded with recent awards for their Christmas lights display. “We were awarded a Highly Recommended for the Best Street and a Runner Up for the Best Novelty in the 2018 Camden Council Christmas Lights Competition. I also received the Paediatric Unit’s Choice for Best House in the Lights for Kids Competition” Travis explained. “It really is great to see the community come together and to celebrate the joy of Christmas. It is always a good feeling to see the happiness that we bring to people of all ages at this time of year” he ended. For more information about South Circuit Christmas Lights, you can find them on Facebook. v Feature Article [Cover] Carstens’ house at the South Circuit Christmas Lights [Left] Be sure to look for Santa! | Images Supplied by Travis Carstens

Camden Council Celebrates Picture Perfection Camden Council recently celebrated picture perfection last month, announcing the winners of this year’s Macarthur Nature Photography Competition. There were 24 winners and 23 highly commended entrants recognised across the seven categories at the annual award ceremony, held at Camden Civic Centre. Harrington Park resident, Ian Hollis, took out the ‘Landscapes of Macarthur’ category. “I am a full-time university student, so photography is a hobby of mine” Mr Hollis said. “Winning was such a great feeling. I really enjoyed seeing everyone else’s images and meeting new likeminded people from the area. “I captured the winning image during an intense lightning storm as it rolled over the region. Soaking wet and freezing cold, I watched the epic bolts getting closer and closer to the Harrington Park Lake, where I was shooting. I had to leave before they hit for obvious safety reasons, but that shot is special to me as I was able to capture my home in a unique image”. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said that residents were able to admire the entries at Narellan Town Centre, who was this year’s major sponsor. “Each entry was on display for 10 days, right near the Centre Management’s office” Cr Fedeli said. “I am always in awe of the photos submitted as part of this competition, which we run in partnership with Campbelltown and Wollondilly Councils. The talent right across the Macarthur region is just phenomenal and our natural landscape is just so beautiful”. v

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Let’s Sing And Make Community Together Seven years ago a brand new tiny church with only 12 adults decided that it would like to do something for the community at Christmas. That year (2012) saw the first Oran Park Community Carols put on by NewLife Anglican Church. We were delighted to see around 250 kids and adults on the lawn at Gardner Reserve. It was a great night. Run forward to 2017 and that crowd had grown to around 2500 and the evening finished as it had done for previous 5 years with a fireworks spectacular. Last year the rain intervened and we made the best we could of a rather damp situation by holding the carols in the church after the grounds were washed out. This year (whilst we’re praying for rain across Australia) we’d love it to be dry enough around the 21st of December for us to stay outside! So why come along? According to a recent TED talk we’re told that aside from all the fun of free activities for kids, our sausage sizzle, jumping castles etc. the real benefit of carols is - singing! Indeed, this talk says, “the distinguishing feature of singing was that it bonded groups more quickly than the other activities.” Are you new to Oran Park? Are you a long time resident seeking to build connections? Do you just love a good carol? Well if you do, come and join us from 5:30pm - we’ll have a blast *and* build community as we sing of Jesus who came to be a way in a manger - a way back to God. Of course you’re welcome at our Christmas services too. We’ll be celebrating Jesus at 5 & 7pm on Christmas Eve, and 9am on Christmas Day. More info on our services on our website. Join our family this Christmas. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish As we know Christmas 2019 means different things to different people: for some it is a time to spend with family and friends; whereas, for others it is a time to spend another Christmas alone without the presence of those they love most. For some, Christmas this year will be filled with emotions of grief and sorrow; whereas for others this day is the start of a hope filled future as they witness children and grandchildren celebrating their 1st Christmas. For some, Christmas 2019 is another year to continue the traditions that have been passed on for generations. Whereas for others, like the parish community of St Mary MacKillop Oran Park (that I am blessed to serve as Parish Priest) this Christmas is a time to continue traditions only started in recent years as we gather for worship and prayer to celebrate Christmas 2019. Though no matter what Christmas 2019 means to us, and no matter what emotions and feelings, hopes and fears we bring to this Christmas; I invite you and your loved ones to come and celebrate Christmas 2019 at St Mary MacKillop Church, Oran Park: our Christmas Mass program for our two Mass centres of St Mary Mother of God Church at Leppington and St Mary MacKillop Church at Oran Park can be found on our website www.marymackillopparish.org.au May the events of the 1st Christmas - when a small, poor child that Christians name as ‘the Son of God’ was born – remind all of us that Christmas is not simply about the presents and the parties (however special these may be) but an opportunity to strive to promote amongst our families, friends and our neighbourhoods those values that are so central to this special time of year – like love, peace and goodwill to all. Merry Christmas to one and all.

Keeping to tradition, Macarthur Lions Club is once again attending the St Johns Church Christmas Carols. The Carols are held in the beautiful surrounds of Camden’s Macarthur Park, within the grassed and treed venue that acts as a natural ‘amphitheatre’. Macarthur Lions will be selling BBQ sandwiches and cold beverages to the carollers, guided by the St Johns’ performers to the choruses of traditional and contemporary Christmas carols and it promises to be a memorable night for all. The evening will be filled with song, laughter and an overall experience of joy and harmony. Let’s not forget glow sticks and the Macarthur Lions Club’s hot BBQ sausage sandwiches and great service. Macarthur Lions assist St Johns, who present the Christmas Carols evening each year to the parishioners of St Johns and residents of the Macarthur region free of charge and all citizens are welcome. It’s that time again – the most wonderful time of the year! And to get everyone in the mood for Christmas, Harrington Park Anglican Church are once again hosting the Harrington Park Community Carols and Fireworks night on Saturday 14th December. This will be the 16th year that this event has marked the beginning of the festive season. Held in the grounds of Harrington Park Public School, it is one of the biggest annual events for the local community, bringing together well over a thousand people for a great night of entertainment and celebration with their friends and family. Harrington Park Anglican Church minister Jono Squire said, “We are blessed to have an awesome team who serve our community at this event, both on stage with the brilliant carols program and behind the scenes making everything happen. Our church is always keen to share the good news of Jesus and celebrate his birth at Christmas, and the carols night is a great way of doing just that”. Each year the event gets bigger and better. There are activities for the children and youth, a superb musical program, food and drinks available to purchase and a fabulous firework display just after 9:00pm, provided by Foti International Fireworks. While all the organisational work is provided by Harrington Park Anglican Church, this free event is only possible with the assistance of a number of generous sponsors. This includes the Platinum Sponsor, Young Academics Childcare Centre, who have kindly sponsored the fireworks display. For more details: harringtonparkchurch.org.au.

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST I know it’s a cliché but try to do away with the presents and be present this Christmas. Years (even months) down the track it’s hard to recollect the material possessions that we were gifted with, but we do remember the highs and lows, the times when we were reduced to tears and when we rolled around on the lounge room floor in fits of laughter. If only I could have ‘one’ more Christmas with my loved ones who were taken too soon. We have plenty of Christmas cheer, events, festivities and a recipe to help you get in the spirit! We’ll be back in the New Year, with our first edition in February. Until then, stay safe and enjoy Your Community News. ‘Time is precious, make sure you spend it with the right people’.
