Oran Park Probus Club Oran Park Probus Club has just celebrated its second general meeting at Lakeside Golf Club, Camden. The meeting was well attended by the members, many of whom enjoyed lunch after the meeting. Our guest speaker, a retired surgeon with a career that has spanned forty years, used photographs to give us an insight into his life as a surgeon, which commenced with six years of study at Sydney University. We were entertained by some amusing anecdotes of his time at university and as a junior doctor. Our guest speaker for December will recount some amazing but true real-life stories from Australian history. The December meeting will be followed by a Christmas lunch. A little bit of joy to mark the end of the year. A year of hardship and distress for so many people worldwide. Many Probians are looking forward to resuming ‘normal’ activities and day tours as soon as it is considered safe to do so. Connecting with other retired or semi-retired people in friendship, fellowship, and fun, that is the Probus aim and one that Oran Park Probus Club would like to promote within the local community. If you would like to find out more about Probus or come to a meeting next year, the first meeting of 2021 will be on February 2, 2021. Please contact the Secretary on 0410 758755 or email oranpark@probusclubs.com.au for further details. r 3 New Probian Members being Inducted | Image Supplied FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

I will be honest and say that for me, and I am sure for most of us, it has only been since March this year that the word ‘pandemic’ has entered our civic and individual conversations. As Sydney Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher said (in a homily he recently gave on the occasion of the ordination of 4 new priests), “The word pandemic comes from the Greek words pan meaning all – as in ‘panorama’ and ‘pandemonium’ – and demos meaning the people – as in ‘democratic’ and ‘demography’. During the Antonine Plague of the 2nd century A.D., the great Graeco-Roman physician Galen first used the term pandemic to describe a contagion that threatened everyone”. As the Archbishop goes onto say, while during 2020 we have associated the word ‘pandemic’ with ‘coronavirus’ “the word didn’t always refer to disease. Before Galen pandemic was used simply to denote whatever affected everyone … In the Gospels we hear that ‘all the people’ were drawn to Jesus’ teaching and astonished by His miracles. Jesus’ coming is ‘joy for all the people’ and His second coming judgment upon all”. As the Archbishop ended his reflection: “It shall come to pass,” God said through the prophet Joel, “that I will pour out my Spirit upon all the people, so your children prophesy, your old people dream dreams, and your young people see visions” (Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17). God wants a spiritual pandemic and [we] must be its vectors … so that there is an epidemic of hope and courage, love and mercy, beauty and goodness, faith, and reason in our times”. (The full reflection/homily of Archbishop Fisher can be found here: www.sydneycatholic.org/homilies/2020/the-mass-of-ordination-tothe-priesthood/) FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Glories Stream from.. It’s been a COVID crazy year. Christmas will come this year with all the challenges of our new reality - reduced gathering sizes (20 people for dinner anyone?), and social distancing etc. What do these changes mean for NewLife? Firstly, Carols. Things have changed! The government has specified that no more than 500 people can gather at Carols events. Given our history of over 2000 people on Gardner Reserve we believe an outdoor event is not safe to plan. So we’re doing something new. Oran Park Community Carols will still go ahead on Saturday December 19th but we’ll be streaming it to your home. So gather friends and family and tune in live from 7:30-9:00pm. You can find us at youtube.com/newlifeoranparklive Secondly, our Christmas Services. They have changed a bit. We love gathering as friends and family in this special season but this too has new limits. Our building can only hold 140 at a time and so we’re adding in a streaming option. We’ll do a 5pm service designed specifically for our kids which will be only in the building. Then we’ll run more traditional Christmas Eve 7pm and Christmas morning 9am services which will be on site and online. Thirdly, the message of the season. It’s unchanged! In the words of Silent Night we’re told that on the evening when Jesus was born, “Glories streamed from heaven afar.” At Christmas we celebrate Jesus coming to earth, bridging the gap, and being born in human flesh. If ever we needed a year where we knew that God loved us and hasn’t forgotten us this is that year. Christmas reminds us that He is not distant. We pray that God’s love comes home to you - either in our building, or streaming from not so far away over the net.

The Catherine Field Rural Fire Brigade understands this has been a very challenging and different year for many families. With this in mind, they have been able to get Santa (his helper) to spread some cheer across our great community and to see those smiles on all the kids faces. This year is not about donations, this year is their turn to give something back for all that have supported the brigade and for them to spread some Christmas cheer to you and your family. The 2020 Santa Run will be like no other. With some careful planning, they are confident they can make it a fun experience, while keeping within COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines. So, come and wave to Santa as they drive and stop around your neighbourhood. While they are doing their best to keep us all safe, they ask that we all keep them safe. If you or anyone in your family is unwell, you may stand at your letter box or front yard and Santa will still drive past for a wave. Please do not come to the truck if you are unwell or have travelled overseas in the last 14 days. Remember to keep a 1.5 metre distance from the brigade members and surrounding people, that are not in your immediate family, at all times. Be sure to like and follow Catherine Field Rural Fire Brigade on Facebook, where you will receive further updates closer to the dates and be able to track Santa as he travels around your neighbourhood! Save the dates for December 2020: Saturday 5th - Gregory Hills and Gledswood Hills Saturday 12th - Catherine Park and Harrington Grove Saturday 19th - Catherine Field and Oran Park

Lions Christmas Tradition
Getting into the Christmas spirit early, Lions Clubs in the Narellan, Camden, Macarthur and Campbelltown areas have been busy stocking the shelves of businesses with delicious Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings to support the needs of the local community. Narellan Lions Club’s Danny Richardson said they are grateful to the families from around the Macarthur Region who have supported the annual fundraiser and thanked the businesses for their help to ensure the cakes were readily available in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Christmas cakes were available in 1.5kg size for $17, 1kg for $13 and a 900gm pudding for $13. “We’d like to let the public know that the cakes are available via Facebook, and simultaneously thank these businesses for their support” Danny said. Lions Cakes will be available from Lifeline Narellan and Camden, The Oaks Butcher Shop, Tildsley Butcher, IMB Credit Union and Macarthur Credit Union. The Lions Christmas Cake Program had its beginnings back to 1965 and proved successful almost immediately with astronomical sales. The organisation decided to make it an annual festive program that started at the end of October in the lead up to Christmas year each. The Lions Christmas Cakes have been baked by Australia's leading food companies since 1983; with all cakes baked to the relevant identical recipe by the manufacturer, ensuring a uniform, high quality product. Annual sales nationally are approximately $6.5 million, and the funds raised by the Lion Clubs will go towards a number of activities including Children’s Mobility, Child Cancer Research, Saving Sight, Youth Programs, Diabetes Awareness, Emergency Relief, welfare and humanitarian projects. For further details on the Lions Cakes and Puddings or how Lions work, contact Danny from Narellan Lions Club on 0417 676815. Julia Reserve Wins National Excellence Award
Oran Park’s Julia Reserve Youth Precinct has taken out yet another award win, proving Camden residents can enjoy the best of the best right here. The facility was recently awarded 2020 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) National Award, recognised for its architectural excellence just four months after being awarded the AILA state award. The newest park in the Camden area, a joint initiative between Camden Council, Greenfields Development Company and Landcom, includes the area’s second skate park, a parkour facility, multi-use courts, kick-about areas, ping-pong tables and much more. It was commended by the judges for: • Being a wonderfully vibrant multi-generational park for the growing community of Oran Park; • Key pedestrian and bicycle connections to the adjacent community centre, shopping centre, schools and residential • areas; and • Achieving a delicate balance not only between stakeholder demands, a wide variety of activities and user group needs, but also with the ecological conditions of the land; and much more. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the precinct was an exceptional leisure space for the community to enjoy. “From the moment Julia Reserve Youth Precinct opened it has been extremely popular with kids regularly using it” Cr Fedeli said. “The beauty about this precinct is that it really does tick many boxes for our young families with kids able to use the skate facilities, multi-use courts and ping pong tables while parents can keep an eye on them in beautiful surroundings. “I believe the precinct is thoroughly deserving of the recognition and I encourage you all to continue using the facility whilst following all COVID-19 guidelines including social distancing”. The Story of Christmas
Christmas is a time of celebration. It’s a time when Santa brings gifts, after finding out who was on his naughty and nice list throughout the year. Now we all know that Santa is a jolly old man with a long white beard in a bright red suit. But have you ever wondered just where he came from? Lifehouse Church Gregory Hills Pastor Paul Stevens wanted to share Santa’s story with everyone, so he wrote a children’s book ‘The Boy Who Became Santa Claus’. It’s a book that takes you on a trip back in time to discover the inspiring true story of our much-loved hero. You soon find out that he was once a young child and that his name was Nicholas. “When I discovered Santa’s amazing true back story, I couldn’t just wait to share it!” said Pastor Paul to the Oran Park Gazette. So, what is it that Pastor Paul enjoys most about the festive season? “Christmas is my very favourite time of year because it’s a special time where family and friends get together to have fun and to show their appreciation of each other. It’s also the birthday of Christ and I love to celebrate birthdays…especially His” he smiled. As a church, they love to celebrate Christmas too. Every Sunday in the month of December they will be running festive services with Carols, special messages, and fun things for the kids. They would love for you to join them at one of these. You can contact them via their website at www. yourlifehousechurch.com.au or on Facebook @ Lifehouse Church Gregory Hills. The Boy Who Became Santa Claus is also available to purchase online through bookstores like Amazon and Book Depository. For more information, visit www.paulanthonystevens.com. au

Students to Get Extra Support Due to Remote Learning Disruptions

Christmas calls Connection
for
Joy
and
Have you finished your Christmas shopping? Haven’t started? Got a few bits and pieces? A Dad said to me recently that he was getting so stressed about Christmas. He’s a single Dad raising three boys and he can’t afford much. I asked him what his stress was achieving and he said that he wasn’t getting much joy from life. I asked what his kids really needed, and he replied “a Dad that’s not stressed and that is there for them”. Kids need a parent that is present to their needs every day, not a parent that has a sack load of presents on Christmas Day. Sometimes parents think that buying expensive “educational” toys make their children do better academically. Children don’t need stuff, they need you. Research has shown that children learn more in social interaction with caring, interested, and more knowledgeable others. The more that parents talk with (not talk at) their children the better they do socially, emotionally, and academically. So your child will learn more from sitting down with you with a world atlas poster that cost you $1, and exploring and chatting about what you both see and know, than she will from the electronic world globe toy that cost you 120 bucks. Those plastic toys will cause more mess and stress, and will sooner or later end up in landfill, but the gift of your time and energy with your children will last a lifetime. I’ve seen this little poem doing the rounds. It is such a simple, lovely thing… • “Something they want • Something they need • Something to wear, and • Something to read.” The “something they need” could be a bit tricky. They might think they need the latest electronic thing-a-ma-jig. Or you may think you need to give it to them to prove your love for them. Ask yourself if the “gift” is going to create connection or disconnection? So many parents I speak to regret purchasing the electronic thing that has caused their child to become more isolated and withdrawn and then had the battle over having to place limits on it. Wishing you much joy and connection this holiday season. r

This year has certainly been an interesting year for education across the globe. Here in Australia, the impact of COVID-19 has varied from state to state, with the full extent of impact not yet being realised. Last month, the NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, announced a plan to implement additional support within schools by offering the COVID Intensive Learning Support Program for students who have fallen behind due to remote learning. The NSW Department of Education will assist schools to identify students requiring this support and employ a selection of teachers to execute the program, which is set to be culminating in the form of intensive small group instruction within the school setting. The teachers will be selected from submitted expressions of interest and encompass a range of educational backgrounds and current work statuses; including casual teachers who were impacted by a lack of work during remote learning. Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell explained, “We know that learning for many students stagnated during the pandemic and tuition in small groups will help re-engage students in their schooling”. Whilst it is encouraging that the far-reaching impact of remote learning practices on vulnerable children is recognised, it will be interesting to see how equitable this program is in its availability to those who need it the most and how that will inevitably be determined. Either way, any support and additional funding for the education system in order to support the learning of our future generations is a welcome announcement. The scheme is set to be available to all school sectors and commence in Term 1, 2021.

The Magic of Dr Seuss Brought to Life You may just see The Grinch out and about on the streets of Camden this Christmas. Don’t be alarmed though, it’s just Camden Musical Society rehearsing for their first full production, Seussical, which will play in March next year. Seussical is a Dr Seuss musical, with characters like Horton the Elephant, Cat in the Hat, Mayzie La Bird, Gertrude McFuzz, Jojo from Whoville and of course, The Grinch! “Camden Musical Society’s production of Seussical will run at Camden Civic Centre from 5th March for three weeks. Tickets will go on sale shortly, in mid-December. We are hoping that you’ll come along and support us with our exciting, first production” said Melissa Musgrave of Camden Musical Society. “It’s a family show that is bright and colourful with great music. It brings to life all the wonderful characters of Dr Seuss” Melissa added. Christmas is the perfect time to introduce The Grinch. Whilst often a disgruntled and scary character, at times he does love the festive season, where you’ll see him in his Santa costume. The Grinch will be played by local Jack Murphy. With the current pandemic, the musical society will be working under strict COVID restrictions, to ensure that the cast, crew, and audience are all safe. This has brought with it new challenges not seen before. “We have had to work under COVID restrictions, which means that there’s only a certain amount of people allowed up on stage. What we’ve done to cater for this is that we have got a double cast. Over the three weeks, our cast gets half the performances each. It means a lot of work leading up to that. This makes this production even more special” explained Melissa. For up to date information about Seussical, search Camden Musical Society on Facebook. r Feature Article: [Cover] Jack Murphy, who plays The Grinch and cast | Image: Lauren Waite [Above] Seussical arrives in March 2021 | Image: www. camdenmusicalsociety.org

Have their Say Are you aged between 12 and 24 years and have something to say about the future of the Camden area? Share those thoughts with us, as part of the second stage of Council’s Youth Survey! Participants must reside in the Camden area and will go into the running to win one of five prizes, with a combined total of more than $750. The survey results, which will identify the needs and aspirations of Camden’s young people, will help inform Council’s Youth Strategy. The Strategy, which is currently being developed, has identified five focus areas in stage one of the survey, conducted earlier this year. They include: • Youth mental health and wellbeing; • Youth employment and education; • Community connections; • Youth voice and empowerment; and • Safety. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the second round will give Council the opportunity to drill further into the details already obtained. “We know the decisions we make today will impact our youth as they become active members of our community,” Cr Fedeli said. “That’s why it’s so important we hear what really matters to them as we continue to prepare our Youth Strategy. “We received a fantastic result in our first round, with over 1,000 responses. Their feedback showed us young people are looking for activities to take place in the local area, including music events and youth festivals, sporting competitions and community barbecues. “This is a fantastic start and now we want to take it to the next level and really focus on the main topics raised previously.” For more information or to complete the Youth Survey, go to bit.ly/3lphF2R. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST We made it! We’re on the cusp of Christmas. This year it’s about ‘virtual carols’ and ‘set times’ with Santa, capped dining limits for Christmas lunch and ‘Zoom’ replacing interstate travel. While it is clearly apparent that Christmas will be ‘different’ this year, it’s still very much worthy of celebrating. We’re celebrating the joy of spending time, be it physical or virtual, with friends, family and loved ones. Making magic of moments that become forever embedded in our memories. This year be thankful and grateful for what we have, rather than what we don’t or should. Find the magic. The team here at the District Gazette are grateful for the support of both our readers and local business advertisers - without you the challenges of 2020 would have been amplified. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy Christmas with better blessings in 2021. I’ll end it this year with this.....’In a world where you can be anything, be kind’ Enjoy Your Community News.
