A True Love Story Celebrating 50 years of marriage is an amazing achievement. It shows that a bond between husband and wife is strong and that love is alive and well. For local couple Brian and Avril DeFazio, the celebration of their Golden Wedding Anniversary was made even more special with a surprise wedding vow renewal at St Paul's Catholic Church in Camden late last year, exactly 50 years to the day since they first tied the knot in 1968 in Glasgow in Scotland. The proud couple, who first met when Avril was 14 and Brian was 15, have three children and 6 grandchildren. They were joined by family and friends at a celebration in October to renew their wedding vows with Father Michael as the Priest in the Macathur. With February the month of love, you may ask what Brian and Avril’s secret is to 50 years of marriage? “Mum and Dad’s secret is being best friends and always putting family first” said Dawnmarie DeFazio-Joyce, their Daughter. The married couple have shared many happy memories together over the years. Some of Brian and Avril’s favourites include celebrating their 25th and 50th Wedding Anniversaries, the birth of each of their children and grandchildren and becoming Australian citizens as a family on Australia Day in 2006. “Always work together as a team. Always laugh with each other and always love each other” is their advice for couples getting married. Words to live by and a true love story. Petrified Parent and that First Day of Kindy Uniform check, backpack check and lunch recipes check. Everything seems to be ready and organised, even our beloved children can’t wait to start their first day of kindergarten. So why is it always so hard for the parents? Getting ready to send my first born to kindergarten is like an emotional roller coaster. A bit like parenting in general. Oneminute I’m sharing in his excitement about the new journey, new friends he will make and the change in his daily routine. The next I’m petrified of the exposure to big school, bullying and all that goes with kids growing up in today’s world. So, what do we do to get through this? Well, we put our big girl and boy pants on, show our excitement and seek feedback and advice from other parents who are going through the same thing. Just in our immediate local area of Oran Park, Harrington Park and Gregory Hills, there is no doubt that the numbers are expected to be high of the fresh little faces that will be heading to school for their first day. I wanted to speak to some of our local parents about what they are doing to prepare themselves for this milestone. Jane, a Gregory Hills resident, shares her tip for this time. “I’m embracing the time I have now. I’m making a conscious effort to spend more time with my daughter Everly before her first day. We are going shopping and having a pamper day and just making her feel special which helps me also”. Harrington Park dad Carlos explained that for him, “it’s about the whole family being there on that first day to send their son Michael off. Taking the morning off from work so that they can support each other and share in this family milestone”. When I asked my little kindy starter what he was looking forward to the most, his reply was simple, lunch. This of course

goes without saying. Pack them a vegemite sandwich, a hug and an ‘I love you’ and they will be on their merry way, most likely not even turning back to say bye. To all the parents out there sharing this upcoming journey with me, my advice as I too find my big girl pants, is this. Don’t forget your tissues, remember this is just part of the parenting process and an exciting time for our little ones and be happy and excited for them. The more nervous you are, the more they will be too. Good luck and enjoy.

Oran Park’s Hidden Gem

A Message of Love

The people and community of Oran Park have welcomed a new café to the area, with The Grid Café and Restaurant, formerly Oran Park Town Café, reopening with a fresh and modern look and menu last month. Owners Aron Johnson and Krishna Bhattarai first took over the successful café in July last year. The new name, which pays tribute to the rich motorsport history of the local area, was part of a rebrand that included interior renovations

There’s no occasion quite as special as Valentine’s Day, where for many centuries lovers from all aspects of the world come together to share their endless appreciation for one another. Today this is typically done through the exchanging of small tokens of appreciation, such as chocolates, flowers or even jewellery. In fact, it is estimated that each year, over 1 billion cards are purchased solely for Valentine’s Day gifts. The heavily celebrated occasion that takes place on the 14th of February each year, originally began in the year 496, as a religious celebration where the red rose, symbolic for love and passion, was given to show countless affection. The day has been celebrated in a variety of different cultures, mostly popular in western society and is also celebrated in China, France and various locations on the map. Whilst Valentine’s Day may not be celebrated by everyone, one thing is for sure on the big day..... it’s a day that holds a significant and valuable message of love and acceptance.

and a new menu. “We’re very proud of The Grid Café and Restaurant. Our name reflects the racing tradition of Oran Park. We’ve undergone renovations and now have a new menu, including a dinner menu for Friday and Saturday nights”, said Co-Owner Aron. The cuisine is Modern Australian and includes new healthy options and a few old favourites. The juices and smoothies are already proving popular with their customers. With 35 years of combined experience as Chefs, Aron and Krishna previously worked at Otto in Wooloomooloo. Aron is also a Michelin Star Chef, having received the honour 15 years ago whilst working at Il Convivio in Rome, Italy. Phase two of the renovations have been planned, with a lounge area ideal for evening dining to be made. “We’re here and we invite locals to come and visit us. Food is our friend” beamed Aron. The Grid Café and Restaurant is located at 5 Peter Brock Drive in Oran Park. Their phone number is 02 9043 5624. Brook’s Amazing Year Oran Park racing driver Tim Brook has completed a dream season behind the wheel, taking out the 2018 Toyota 86 Racing Series Championships and setting his sights firmly on defending his title this year. The local father, who took out the Championship at the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 in November, is elated with his hardearned win for the Tim Brook Motorsport team. “After claiming the title, my first feeling was that of relief. Having been competitive for the season, it was great to have results go our way. It was the best and I was pretty stoked. It soon turned into a big celebration for the team. It means a lot to achieve this in Australia” Tim told the Oran Park Gazette. Brook’s goal now for the new season is to defend his title and repeat his success of 2018. “Our plan is to defend my title in 2019. Although I would enjoy the challenge of making the jump into another category, it just makes sense to go around again. Back to back is my goal. We plan to get the most speed out of the car and up the ante” he explained. Tim and his team also hosted a Ride Day at Wakefield Park in December, which was a great opportunity for everyone to get together after a big season. Everyone was still buzzing from the Championship victory as they were treated to an exciting experience with Tim, his team and of course his race car, nicknamed ‘Black Betty’. As for ‘Black Betty’, Tim doesn’t expect any real changes to the car for 2019. “We’ll be going over everything to make sure my car is as good as it can be. General maintenance, that sort of thing. All the ingredients are there for the car for another big year. We may change the livery (colours and design) on the car. All the cars in the category are the same. It will be a level playing field” he said. “I’d like to thank everyone for their support last year. To have a lot of people recognise the achievement was quite overwhelming. Hopefully we’ll keep doing the job for the local area. I’ll give it everything I can” Tim ended. U Tim Brook (centre) and his proud team | Image: https://www.facebook.com/timbrookmotorsport/

Donate to Repay Library Fines Residents have the chance to erase their overdue library fines by donating food as part of Camden Council libraries’ amnesty to help local charities, until mid this month. The Can Your Fines appeal which began on Monday 7 January 2019 and runs through to Saturday 16 February 2019 encourages people to return any late items. “This is a great opportunity for residents to feel good about waiving overdue fines while assisting those in need with food donations” Mayor of Camden, Cr Peter Sidgreaves said. “Canned goods and wool are accepted as part of the initiative and I encourage residents to get involved in the initiative”. Any overdue books, toys, DVDs, CDs or magazines brought back during the fine amnesty need to be returned with canned goods (within six months of expiry) or eight-ply knitting wool to have the fines waived. GAME REVIEW

..... Arms

Arms is a boxing game. There are 15 characters and each of them are unlike one another. There are a lot of mods in the game and the modes you can play are grand prix, versus and party match. In grand prix mode, you can choose your character (between 1-15) and your combination of arms, then you’re ready to fight. You battle 10 other fighters in a row and if you win all 10 matches, you become the champion. In versus mode, this is the perfect mode to play in if a friend wants to play with you. This is my favourite mode. Basically, there are different places to battle. Instead of playing against the computer, you play against your friends. Party match mode is where you and a few other people battle off like a tournament and the most points win. There are also 42 different arms that you can get to put on your person. Some of them bounce, spin, protect and explode. You can earn coins to buy new arms as you go. I recommend this game to anyone over the age of 8 years. I rate it 8 out of 10 (only available on Nintendo Switch) and THANKS Grandma, it's a top game!

Fattened on Local Pastures More than 200 years ago, the cows depicted in sculpture opposite Oran Park Library pointed the way for the development of southwest Sydney. The loss of two bulls and four cows within six months of the first British settlement was a disaster. The cattle had been brought by ship from Cape Town. Poorly supervised, the small herd had wandered off and disappeared into the bush. The only available cow on the entire continent was the Governor’s milking cow! Seven years later, in 1795, 61 cattle were discovered on the southern side of the Nepean River. The Governor decided that the cattle would not be recaptured; they remained and flourished in the ‘Cowpastures’. In those early years, the colony was close to starvation. It needed to become self-sufficient in case supply ships sank or arrived late. The seasons and soils in the colony were very different to England, and most new arrivals had no farming skills. John Macarthur, a soldier who settled near Parramatta, recognised that the Cowpastures in the southwest would be a good place for grazing livestock. He lobbied Lord Camden in England and received some promising land when it was opened for settlement. Macarthur’s sons trialled many business ideas at Camden Park and, persisting through setbacks, became wealthy. They built a fine homestead at Camden Park, where descendants live today. This area’s story is about brave entrepreneurs who made a commitment to raising a family far from their homeland, and, in the process, helped to make England’s ‘dumping ground’ for prisoners into the land we know today. You live in an area where brave people with initiative flourished. Camden Historical Society maintains records and objects from early Camden. Visit Camden Museum on John Street, in the same building as the library. Open Thursday to Sunday. Entry is free. Y Cow sculptures in Oran Park | Image Supplied. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish These days I find people make resolutions not only at the beginning of the New Year, but throughout the opening months of a new year. Some people resolve to lose weight, eat healthier, pay off debt, quit smoking, spend more time with family or friends etc. May I propose that if you’re looking for a great ‘spiritual’ resolution for 2019 why not try Alpha. What is Alpha ? Alpha is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed manner. It’s low key, friendly and fun. It’s supported by all the main Christian denominations. While our Church here in Oran Park will be hosting Alpha please know that Alpha isn’t just open to those who might call themselves Catholic or even Christian. Alpha is for everyone and anyone. First there's Food... Every evening we start with food and a time to get to know each other. Then a Talk... Around 20-30 minutes long film. We explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity. Followed by Discussion... Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance in a small group to share thoughts and ideas on the topic. There's no obligation to say anything and there's nothing you can't say (seriously). It's an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in a friendly and open environment. After successfully running Alpha over recent years, we will again be running Alpha, starting on Tuesday 26th February @ 7pm (finished by 9.15pm) at St Mary MacKillop Church, 94 Oran Park Dr, Oran Park. A map with directions to the parish centre can be downloaded from our website www.marymackillop.org.au - To rsvp just contact us on 46482226 or send an email to alphaoranpark@ gmail.com As those who have already taken part in Alpha would testify, if you and I chose Alpha as one of our resolutions (no matter what U Image Supplied the time of the year), it could change our life. FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park NSW 2570

Certain Faith It’s a funny combination of words isn’t it? For most of us ‘faith’ is the vague yearning we keep at the back of our minds for things that we secretly long to come true. ‘Certain’ is the opposite - it’s about the dependable, the reliable, and the trustworthy. ‘Solid rock’ is a good combination. But, ‘Certain Faith?’ That sounds like mixing categories. There were four men who wrote biographies of the life of Jesus that are recorded for us in the Bible. One of them - Luke (a doctor and historian) opens his account with these words, “Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” There you have it, “the certainty of the things you’ve been taught.” Jesus is all about faith for this life and the life beyond. But the faith He speaks of is much more than a mere wish, or a longing. There’s a certainty that sits underneath this faith. A solidity to the account of Jesus’s life. It’s history. It’s recorded by Luke that we might believe and find a way to live that’s bigger than slavery to the mortgage, school fees, commuting, cruising, and diets. That’s the Jesus we’ll be exploring this term at NewLife. The one who said He’d come to set captives free. Jesus offers us certain faith and you’re invited to hear it - and experience it - for yourself. IN THE NEWS

My Dog Won’t Stop Scratching, And It’s Driving Me Crazy! Itchy skin is one of the most common and frustrating problems dogs suffer from. There are lots of things that you and your vet can do to help improve the quality of life for your itchy dog, starting at home with some easy tips: • Use a good quality flea control product, even if you aren’t seeing any fleas on your dog. There are lots of excellent treatments available from your pet shop, vet or online. We like Simparica chews (Zoetis), Comfortis chews (Elanco) and Bravecto top spot or chews (MSD Animal Health). Follow the directions on the pack and repeat at the recommended intervals. • Give a balanced diet, including a reputable or premium brand dry food. Some varieties are designed for supporting skin health. It’s best NOT to start a restricted or unusual diet trial unless it is the advice of your vet. • Wash your dog regularly, with dog shampoo; your vet can help if you aren’t sure which one to use. Human shampoos, wool wash and sunlight soap were never intended to be used on dogs. Itchy dogs may benefit from being bathed up to twice a week, and sometimes even a plain water rinse can soothe the skin. • Conditioners and leave-in solutions are very helpful for many itchy patients. Some products are soothing (and contain things like oatmeal); others are helpful to reduce bacterial or yeast infections. Use them after every bath, or some brands can be applied in-between bathing, on a dry coat, and simply left on. • Keep a rough record of the problem, as this can really help a vet work out what the possible causes of the itch are. Remember your vet can help and you are not on your own!
