Council Says Thank You to Volunteers Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, recently said thank you to almost 70 local organisations on behalf of Camden Council, at the annual Volunteer Thank You Reception. More than 250 people attended the reception, which was hosted at Camden Civic Centre. It was an opportunity to give back to those individuals and groups always giving to others and they were treated to dinner and dessert, entertainment and a gift, with even a few lucky door prizes up for grabs. The groups acknowledged at the reception included: • Argyle Street Business Collective; • Bushcare Volunteers; • Camden Art Prize Committee; • Camden Bicentennial Equestrian Park Committee; • Camden Chamber of Commerce Tourism and Industry; • Camden Historical Society; • Camden Rural Fire Service; • Camden SES; • Cobbitty Rural Fire Service; • Harrington Park Seniors Group; • Heritage Advisory Committee; • Macarthur Disability Service; • Narellan Lions Club; and
• Narellan Men’s Shed. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the number of volunteers thanked spoke volumes about the Camden community. “It warms my heart to see so many people put their hand up to volunteer for Council, despite leading such busy lives themselves,” Cr Fedeli said. “The Camden community has a long history of volunteering, with voluntary organisations going back as far as the 19th century. “The time and effort these volunteers have put in throughout the year means so much to us here at Council, as well as the broader community. Without their help and support, many of the things we do here at Council would not be possible. “The contribution made to the Camden area by these volunteers is absolutely invaluable and we simply can’t thank them enough.”

Our Local Heroes The heroics shown by our emergency services this fire season has been nothing short of phenomenal. Their hard work and dedication to protect our lives whilst risking their own is something we can all be thankful for. We spoke to Steve Deweske, the Captain of the Catherine Field Rural Fire Brigade, about the support the local community has shown during these devastating times. “I’ve been a member of Catherine Field Rural Fire Brigade for the past 11 years. Catherine Field currently has 30 members. “Our brigade looks after the area of Catherine Field. We also attend incidents within the Macarthur region as well as assisting other regions when called upon. Many of the Macarthur brigades have been committed since early December to the areas of Buxton, Bargo, Oakdale, Hill Top, Orangeville/ Werombi, and as far south as Wingello” Steve said. During the past 4 months, their brigade volunteers have been deployed to South East Queensland, Far Northern NSW including Glen Innes, Coffs Harbour, Taree, as well as the South Coast and Southern NSW to areas such as Batlow and Tumut. “The brigade and the entire zone are very thankful for the generosity and support which has been unprecedented.. “It is the little things such as a wave or a thank you that go a long way to help us provide a service to the community. The amount of welfare such as food and water that has been donated to brigades has been overwhelming. The offers given to volunteers from local businesses has been outstanding. All the volunteers are extremely grateful for all the ongoing support from the greater community. We would also like to acknowledge the support given to the volunteers from their employers to release their employees” explained Steve to the Oran Park Gazette. Captain Steve also emphasized the importance of protecting your family and your home during the fire season and throughout the year. “Ensure that you have a bush fire survival plan and working smoke alarms. Please take the 20 minutes to discuss your bush fire survival plan with your family. Stay up to date on current incidents with apps such as the New South Wales Rural Fire Service ‘Fires Near Me’ app. This app is also a very helpful tool to use when travelling around the state” he ended. You can find the bush fire survival plan at https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and-prepare/bush-fire-survival-plan. Further information can be found at https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au. r

Camden Monopoly Sales Donation Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, recently presented Camden-Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee with a cheque for $60,000 at the ‘Say No 2 DV Breakfast’. The money was raised from the sales of the incredibly popular Camden Monopoly. All 2,000 copies of the boardgame were sold in under one week, raising $120,000 to be split evenly between Camden-Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee and Lifeline Macarthur. Cr Fedeli said Council had a long history of partnering with local community groups to help prevent domestic violence prevention and provide support to victims. “We strongly believe there is absolutely no room for domestic violence in the Camden area,” Cr Fedeli said. “It’s unacceptable and the community here won’t stand for it. That is why Council is so honoured to be able to help CamdenWollondilly Domestic Violence Committee deliver their much-needed projects with our ongoing support and, of course, this incredible donation. “I would like to thank local groups and the community for their support of Council’s domestic violence awareness and prevention partnerships. I would like to encourage residents to continue that support so we can all do our part to provide a safe, happy and healthy community for everyone. “The only way to reduce the incidences of violence is to work together as a community. This is a commitment that Camden Council will continue to honour into the future.” The Camden Monopoly featured 22 locations from across the The game was made possible by its gold, silver and bronze Camden area, selected by the community through a survey. sponsors, which include: They include: • Narellan Town Centre; • Leppington Train Station; • The Hermitage, Gledswood Hills; • St John's Anglican Church; • Meals on Wheels Camden; • St Paul's Catholic Church; • Plus Fitness • Narellan Sports Hub; • Century 21 Real Estate, The Paramount Group • Birriwa Reserve Outdoor Youth Space; • Camden Hire; • Camelot House; • The Mac Credit Union; • Clintons Toyota; • Belgenny Farm; • Harrington Estates; • Camden Town Farm; • Grimes Finance and Mortgages; and • Oran Park Library; and • Cobbitty Village. • Narellan Carpet Court. r

Advertise Here Ever since I can remember, I have had a love for radio. As a child I used to dream of sitting in a studio and conducting my own program. I would regularly go, as part of the audience, to watch shows being recorded seeing many of the stars of yesterday. Eventually my dream was realised and I was given the opportunity to move to the country to work on the local station. That love has remained, and over the years I have stayed with radio both commercial and our local community station. I have been fascinated since the advent of the internet and the many opportunities offered via that medium. A big part of the internet is music and generally people are turning to the internet for their music entertainment. Whist there are quite a few internet stations operating, these aim their music at the younger audience. I felt that there was a hole to be filled, so Reminiscing Music was put together to fill that void. It offers listeners the music that they grew up with and the music they love. If you love the music from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as much as I do and you enjoy different music styles (Rock, Standards, Country, Jazz etc), try reminiscingmusic.com. Spread Some Happiness
Fostering a Love of Reading
A new year brings with it hope. Hope that we can make changes to our lives to make us better people. One of those changes we can all make is a random act of kindness. Random acts of kindness can come in many forms. It can be ringing that family member or friend you haven’t spoken to in years, paying for a stranger’s coffee or walking your neighbour’s dog. These acts are often very small and simple to do, yet they can have a long, lasting affect that brings happiness. Why not set yourself a goal, a goal to do one random act of kindness a week. One act a week will equal 52 in a year, which is a lot of random acts of kindness when you look around and see just how many people we have in our local community. You don’t need to plan your random act of kindness, after all it wouldn’t be random if you knew exactly what you were doing. It can be an act that pops into your brain when you least expect it. Often the best acts are those that are spontaneous and just happen. Don’t be afraid to share your random act of kindness. They have been known to be contagious and people love sharing happy experiences. You can share it on social media or even write it down in a book. At the end of the year, you can reflect on all the kindness you gave back to the world. Just remember, no one is too small to change the world one random act of kindness at a time!
Reading is a fundamental skill that involves interpreting and comprehending written words. At school, the main focus for children is to learn to read, then as children get older, the focus shifts on reading to learn. Amongst all this learning, sometimes the love of reading gets sidelined, or perhaps the spark of joy fails to ignite. It is difficult to love reading when you struggle to interpret meaning. It is also difficult to love reading when you only see it as a chore or task to be completed. It is proactive to be diligent in encouraging your child to love reading from a young age. In order to foster a love of reading, it is important to build positive experiences around reading. One way to do this is to simply read books to your child whilst they listen or follow along with their eyes. This can be done in short bursts to build up the ability to sustain attention, and gradually move to longer sessions, perhaps when the story is quite engaging, or the attention span develops. Another way to build a positive experience is to let your child read whatever interests them. They don’t need to be reading a novel, they could read a comic, magazine, newspaper, website, blog or information book. Make reading fun by letting them have control over what they read – the library is a great place for this as there are so many books available and it costs you nothing to join. The greatest way to foster a love of reading is to share your love of reading with your child. Let them see you reading a book, or if you are reading an article or post on your phone (even if it is social media) tell your child you are reading. Explain how you enjoy reading and how it makes you feel to be able to learn something new or to use your imagination. Remember: “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” – Emilie Buchwald.

Oran Park Named in 2020 Suburbs to Watch Douglas Driscoll, CEO of award-winning real estate group Starr Partners (starrpartners.com.au), has announced his hotly anticipated top 10 Sydney suburbs to watch in 2020. Having recently predicted that the Sydney property market will see the growth of the “exurb” – a prosperous area outside, or on the fringe of, a city’s metropolitan area – it should come as no surprise that Oran Park has been named by real estate expert Douglas Driscoll, CEO of Starr Partners, as a top 10 Sydney suburb to watch in 2020. “I recently forecast that the Sydney property market will soon witness the continued growth of three “exurbs” – and Oran Park will be one of them. Despite being a relatively new suburb, it has a fairly self-sufficient population with good infrastructure, low housing density and reasonable commute times to the city and is fast developing its own personality. Part of Sydney’s emerging Aerotropolis, and just a short distance from the $35 million Gregory Hills Health and Business Centre, transport links – and jobs – won’t be hard to come by” said Douglas Driscoll. The top 10 Sydney suburbs to watch in 2020 are: 1. Oran Park 2. Kensington 3. Crows Nest 4. Bellevue Hill 5. Busby 6. Summer Hill 7. Merrylands 8. Pagewood 9. Blaxland 10. All Ready for Big School
With 2020 now upon us, it’s almost time for thousands of children across the country to pack their bags, give their parents a big hug and walk through the school gates for the very first time to start Kindergarten. Four-year-old Xavier Foley is getting ready to start at St Gregory’s College Junior School and he can’t wait for big school! Xavier, who has two brothers Tommy (6) and Lachlan (3), is looking forward to making new friends and playing soccer at lunchtime with his older brother. “He loves anything to do with animals. He has an encyclopedia knowledge on animals and quite often teaches me things,” said Kymberley Foley, Xavier’s Mum. “Xavier has been going to childcare, which also runs a preschool program. In addition, after orientation he was given a pack from his school to help prepare him for this year which he has loved” she explained. It’s no secret that parents have been known to share the same nervous anticipation as their child when they start school. This can be eased if your child is happy and ready to start their journey ahead, just like Xavier. “My heart will burst with how proud I am of him! He is very excited and has shown no nerves or apprehension at this stage, so that definitely makes the transition easier. I think it will be easier the second time round as both Xavier and us as parents know he has a big brother at the school” said Kymberley. He has already set his sights on a career working with animals when he finishes school, where he hopes to find rare animals and to also save them. Look out David Attenborough! “Gregory Hills really has a community feel. We are friends with all our neighbours and everyone knows each other at school. I love that Xavier will be starting Kindergarten with a lot of children that he will be graduating Year 12 with and creating lifelong friendships” ended Kymberley. r Feature Article: [Cover + Above] Xavier ready to start his new journey. Fire and Stuff The fiery start to the year has challenged all of us in Oran Park (and across our nation) to think about what the things we cherish are. Despite our town remaining mercifully free from the firefront it was pretty scary to see blackened leaves fluttering from the sky. Night after night, we watched the stories of homes wiped out and people escaping from the flames - all whilst our amazing RFS strode towards the inferno to protect what they could. An immanent fire threat causes us to grab the most precious and irreplaceable items - the photo albums, rings, insurance policy, etc. I’ve heard stories of those who fled looking at their cars the next day and wondering why some things made the cut and others didn’t. What becomes precious in those moments seems like either living things - pets, or objects soaked in memories. The opposite occurs when we move home - as all of us have had to do to be here. On those days I find myself looking at the truck (2!) and wondering how on earth I got so much stuff? Was it really all necessary? Would I miss one of the trucks if it didn’t turn up!? Whether in a state of complete loss, or being overwhelmed by the sheer scale of it - our stuff troubles us. When confronted by a man who wanted Jesus to direct his brother to divide his inheritance Jesus answered, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” This year at NewLife you’re invited to join us as we figure out just what true life consists of. We’ll start by hearing Jesus’s call to put Him and His Kingdom before our own. After all, treasuring Jesus is one thing we can possess that will never burn. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Over recent weeks and months, we have all seen the apocalyptic images of bushfires, and many in our region have faced firsthand the smoke and falling embers and ash, and the reality of being evacuated from their homes. Across our state and nation, “Lives have been lost, homes and towns have been destroyed, smoke has shrouded large swathes of our country. And there is no end in sight to the horror which confronts us with our powerlessness before the devastating force of nature”. At times like this we can, as Bishop Brian Mascord (the Catholic Bishop of Wollongong – the diocese in which our region is included) said in a recent reflection, ask: “Where is God in all that has taken place?” As Bishop Brian said: the answer is simply in those who have stood with others in fighting the fires, who stand alongside people in their grief, and those who provide support where and when it is needed. “Those emergency service workers who have worked so hard can only be seen as heroic in their efforts, and courageous in their putting their own lives on the line, and for that we can only be grateful”. Here in our local Catholic parish of St Mary MacKillop Oran Park we have been supporting the St Vincent de Paul Conference Bushfire Appeal. For those who would like to join us in making a donation to this appeal, all you need to do is go to the Vinnies website: www.vinnies.org.au “As Australia experiences these devastating bushfires, let us continue to pray for rain, relief and the generosity of friends and strangers as they work together to keep people, wildlife, livestock and property, safe and to re-build communities”

A lunar rainbow is formed when water droplets in the earth’s atmosphere refract and reflect the moon’s white light. As moonlight is dimmer than sunlight, and our eyes need light to see colour, the lunar rainbow appears as a glowing pale arc – a ghostly version of its daylight cousin.

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Well, what a tough few months it has been. You don't need me to tell you about the devastation these fires have caused for families and business owners, or the health implications faced by many with existing respiratory or other health concerns. What is worth highlighting is the heroic efforts of all of our wonderful emergency services workers, many of whom worked tirelessly for days, weeks and months to help provide the best outcome for our friends, neighbours and communities. As we face 2020, somewhat with a degree of uncertainty about our future climate and landscape, one thing we know for sure is that our community spirit is 100% alive. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by the strength and support of this amazing community that we each call home. We're glad to be back at the tip of 2020 with another year full of inspiring local stories and accomplishments, supporting local businesses and delivering directly to your door! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Your speed does not matter. Forward is forward!'.
