Have some old and unwanted chemical materials lying around? Now is the time to prepare to dispose of them at the annual Chemical CleanOut this month. Chemical CleanOut will be held on Sunday 14 February, 9am-3.30pm, at Council’s Works Depot, 5 Millwood Avenue, Narellan. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the event was a chance for residents to clean out their homes of unwanted hazardous chemicals. “Many of us have chemicals in our garages or around the house that need to be disposed and the Chemical CleanOut is a chance to not only free up some room, but also do something good for the environment” Cr Fedeli said. “All chemicals will be collected at Council’s Works Depot and disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner”. Items that will be accepted on the day include: • Solvents and household cleaners; • Floor care products; • Ammonia-based cleaners; • Pesticides and herbicides; • Poisons; • Pool chemicals; • Hobby chemicals; • Motor fuels; • Fluorescent globes and tubes; • Acids and alkalis; • Smoke detectors; • Paint and paint-related products; • Gas bottles; • Fire extinguishers; • Car and household batteries; and • Motor oils and cooking oils. The Chemical CleanOut is a joint event between Camden Council and the NSW Environmental Protection Authority. For the safety of both the community and staff, residents are asked to remain in their cars when they attend Council’s Works Depot. r

Two Drivers Charged with DrinkDriving Two men have been charged with drink-driving, including a p-plater and a second driver who allegedly attempted to bribe police in Sydney’s south west. About 5.30pm (Friday 15 January 2021), officers from Camden Traffic and Highway Patrol were called to the Hume Highway off-road ramp at Narellan Road, Campbelltown, after motorists had stopped a Holden Utility that was allegedly driving erratically. Police arrived and subjected the provisional driver, a 32-yearold man, to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result. He was arrested and taken to Campbelltown Police Station, where he returned an alleged breath analysis reading of 0.151. The Harrington Park man was charged with drive with high range PCA and is due to appear before Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday 9 February 2021. His provisional licence was suspended. In a separate incident, officers from Liverpool City Traffic and Highway Patrol were performing stationary breath testing on the Hume Highway at Warwick Farm, when they stopped a Subaru Impreza about 8am (Saturday 16 January 2021). The driver, a 52-year-old man, was subjected to a roadside breath test, returning a positive result. He was arrested and taken to Liverpool Police Station, where he returned an alleged breath analysis reading of 0.066. Police will allege in court that while being transported in the police vehicle, the man produced a sum of cash from his pocket, offering it to officers. The Bonnyrigg man was charged with give/offer bribe to member of NSW Police Force and low range PCA and is due to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday 10 March 2021.

School is in for Nathan With 2021 now upon us, many kids around the community will be packing their bags in anticipation for their first day at big school. 5-year-old Nathan Muir from Gregory Hills is amongst one of those who will soon enter the gates and become a Kindergarten student. Nathan will be attending Busby Public School this year. He has two brothers, an older brother Mathew who is 13 and a younger brother Daniel who is 4. “He is looking forward to starting Kindy this year, especially meeting new friends to play with and of course learning” explained Caressa Muir, Nathan’s mother Nathan’s preparation for Kindergarten included attending preschool at Great Beginnings, as well as practicing work at home with his mother and grandmother. The active youngster enjoys playing with his friends and dinosaurs. He loves dinosaurs! “We are excited for Nathan to be starting big school. Nathan has autism, so school will help with his development” Caressa replied. So, what does Nathan want to be when he grows up and finishes school? “He would love to be a paleontologist, where he can work with and learn all about dinosaurs” smiled Caressa. Best of luck Nathan and all the children starting and returning to school this year. r Nathan prepares for the big day | Image: Caressa Muir

Name Approved For New Primary School In Oran Park The new primary school in Oran Park has been named Barramurra Public School, after an Aboriginal word for the swamp mahogany species of Eucalyptus tree found in the Camden and Cumberland areas. Construction is underway at O’Keefe Drive for the new school which will cater for up to 1,000 students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The new school will include a support unit of four classes and will be operational this year. Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said the name follows extensive consultation with the local community, the Narellan Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and a Dharawal language expert. “The community was clear in wanting a name that reflected the local community and I am pleased that the chosen name importantly recognises the local Aboriginal community,” said Ms Mitchell. Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said the new name is a welcome announcement. “I’m excited to see this school come to life. The school will serve this vibrant and growing community well into the future and I know we are all looking forward to it,” Mr Sidgreaves said. The NSW Government is investing $7 billion over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver more than 200 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. r

Be the Voice of the Youth in Camden

Local young people aged between 12 and 25 years have the chance to help likeminded people have their voices heard by applying to join Camden Youth Council. Camden Youth Council plays an important role in assisting to develop initiatives and projects for young people living in the Camden area. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said it was important for Council to hear from the future of the Camden area. “Camden is a growing area with so many people of different ages and background and we want to make sure young people can have their say,” Cr Fedeli said. “Our Youth Council gives our young people a fantastic opportunity to both represent the youth of the area while being heard, getting involved in youth projects, initiatives and events. “This year will give the Youth Council a chance to also advise on programs and activities that are set to occur at the fantastic Julia Reserve Youth Precinct.” Camden Youth Council also runs events for local young people through the year including $5 Youth Movie Nights and assisting in Camden Youth Week. New Year. Fresh Start?

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

Reflective Listening

If you search on the term “reflective listening” you will get many different ways of being a reflective listener. I find reflective listening a wonderful tool, but when I teach it to parents they say “that’s weird”. I tell them to go home and try it, and let me know how it’s going for them in a week’s time. Many parents come back and say “it really works”. For parents of adolescents they say that reflective listening has changed the relationship between them and their young person. Here is one way that I use reflective listening… Child: Jack didn’t play with me at lunchtime today. Parent: Oh, Jack didn’t play with you at lunchtime. (Same tone, same affect) Child: Nup Parent: Hmmm Child: He played soccer with Caleb instead. Parent: So, he played soccer with Caleb instead. Child: Yeah Parent: Yeah (with a big sigh) Long silence. Child: I think I’ll play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Parent: You’ve decided to play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Sounds like a plan. What do you notice about this interaction? The child solved his own problem. Notice the absence of the parent giving advice. Notice the absence of the parent asking more questions. Notice the presence of silence and space, and this is the magic of it. Our kids are so used to us giving advice and asking lots of questions that they quite often don’t talk about their stuff because they don’t want the fuss or the lecture. When you give kids lots of silence and space, they open up. Why? Because it is now emotionally safe to do so. Sometimes it takes a while for the child to get used to it, and the communications end quickly. Keep using it, they’ll get used to it. Kids are clever. They usually have some idea of how they might go about solving their problems. After a good while of reflective listening, if the child hasn’t generated his own solutions, you might want to ask “I wonder what you might do about it?” and do some more reflective listening. r

2021 brings a clean slate for many children and their families. It is a chance to start a fresh and move on from any negative experiences from the year before. Unfortunately, 2020 was such an unusual year and certain aspects will continue in the new year. How will this impact education and schooling? We are yet to fully-discover this; however, with experience comes a more preparedness and ability to navigate tricky situations with a clearer direction and course of action. Last year, children and families had a short taste of remote learning in New South Wales with some children of essential workers continuing at school in an altered learning environment. Teachers have adjusted methods of teaching, integrated further technology and initiated COVID safe procedures and processes which will carry through in schools in 2021. Children have adapted to a variety of teaching styles and different teachers whilst learning from home some almost seamlessly, and others not without anxiety and struggles leading to various learning implications. It is possible that we may face further outbreaks of COVID-19 and schooling may need to look different again, but it is still a chance for a fresh start. New classmates. New teachers. For some, a new school or heading into secondary school. 2021 is an opportunity to focus on moving forward positively in whichever way possible. One encouraging thing that we all know is that we collectively got through it all in 2020, and we will get through 2021 and whatever that brings educationally speaking. We are better equipped and have a greater sense of expecting the unexpected. All we can do is encourage our children to continue to try their best and support the teachers, families, and schools as a community in any way possible. Here’s to a great school year!

One Funny Little Book Oran Park author Renee Garcia has just published her first children’s book, amusingly titled ‘Snot Nose Fart Bums’. Inspired by Renee’s son Nate, the book tells of a little snot nosed boy who laughs about farts, whilst learning about manners and hygiene. With illustrations from local Jay Mielczarek, it’s a book that every child will laugh at and every parent can relate to. “As a Mum of two boys, our house is always full of farting. My son Nate has always been a kid who had snotty noses. Every night since he was born, we would read him a book. Sometimes we would sing, and we would make up these funny little poems. We started playing around with some words about how he is always snotty, and the sounds farts make” Renee smiled. “Eventually, our words become sentences and as we added it started to flow into a poem. We got to a point where I thought it would be a great gift to turn this into a book for Nate to keep. Snot Nose Fart Bums was created, and the self-publishing journey began” she added. After 5 years of creating and perfecting the layout and finding the perfect illustrator (Jay Mielczarek AKA Jayboy, a local tattoo artist), they finally launched the book on 18th December, just before Christmas last year. “We were overwhelmed with the hype and turn out we received at our book launch event held at Mount Annan Marketplace. Our book is now available to purchase on our website at www.crgcreativepublishing.com. au. We have been so thrilled with the response and have even sent books to some fans in the USA” said Renee. Renee and Jay have received some great feedback from adults and children. They particularly love the bright illustrations and the funny words. “Our plan is to create a Snot Nose Fart Bums series that will follow the common relevant events that occur in children in their everyday life, that teaches lessons and important values that both kids and parents can connect with” ended Renee. r Feature Article [Top] Renee (author) and Jay (illustrator) [Cover] Renee and Jay with Nate, who inspired the book [Below] Snot Nose Fart Bums. Oran Park Probus Club The first meeting of Oran Park Probus Club for 2021, on February 2nd, will be followed by the second on March 2. As usual, we will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month, however, this may change with any new restrictions imposed due to COVID-19. The venue for our meetings this year will be at Wests Lakeside Golf Club in Camden, where Probus members are expected to maintain COVID- safe practices and abide by Wests COVID -19 rules and precautions. Our meetings recommenced in October last year. It was wonderful to meet up with fellow Probians face to face once more at regular meetings. A Christmas lunch followed the December meeting, enjoyed by all who attended. Our craft afternoons will recommence in February at a different venue. Unfortunately, some of our activities are still on hold. Currently, day tours are not practicable, but it doesn’t stop us thinking and planning for future excursions! Oran Park Probus Club would like to encourage anyone interested in joining a social club for retired and semi-retired people, to come to a meeting as a visitor. Further details may be obtained from the Club secretary: Ph 0410 758755 or email oranpark@probusclubs.com.au. r

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

God and Gummi Bears Gummi Bears, sprinkles, and custard. The build-your-own approach works fantastically well at Licketts for my boy. A dizzying array of potential flavour bombs can be assembled - up to the point of pain in his dad’s wallet. It feels great to choose. It feels empowering to have your frozen custard exactly your way. It’s the same for houses, cars, PCs, music, and Netflix playlists. We’ve gone from a society that used to tune in to one of four freeto-air channels to drowning in a sea of movie and series choices. It can be a little intoxicating. Is it the same when we come to God? Do you, “like to think of God as..”? It’s a tempting thought isn’t it? The idea that we essentially create the god we hope is there from our own preferences is certainly attractive. What if God isn’t like frozen custard? Maybe like me you’ve found that no matter how much I’d, “like to think of them as..” I can’t change any of my relatives - for good or for bad! The real world isn’t shaped by my imagination. Real people aren’t shaped by how I’d like them to be. It’s the same with God Himself. So, what is God like? Just like those real relatives, the God who is really there makes Himself known through the things He does and says. This term at NewLife, we’ll be taking our collective imaginings of God and seeing how they measure up against the way God shows Himself to us in the Bible. If you’ve ever wondered what Christians have found out about God, this is a great time to drop in. Despite all the COVID uncertainty, you can be sure to find us each Sunday - www.youtube.com/newlifeoranparklive from 9:30am. Tune in to, “Taste and see that the LORD is good!” FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish I think it would be fair to say that, from a very young age, some of us were taught that God does answer every prayer; it's just that sometimes, the answer is "no". Now clearly such a statement is on face value very clever. However, the fact of the matter is, such a statement is not very satisfying for most of us, myself included. I don’t know about you, but I don't like to be told I can't have something, particularly when what I want seems so right - the healing of an ill friend, the reconciliation of a broken relationship, or the end of this global pandemic. However, when we look around the world today, it would seem, that the answer to these prayers is consistently "no". The prophet Habakkuk asks God why his prayers go unanswered. “How long, Lord, am I to cry for help, while you will not listen; How long, Lord, am I to cry ‘Oppression’ in your ear, and you will not hear me and save me”. As we see in this dialogue between God and the prophet – God tells Habakkuk to write the vision down and to wait – for “this vision will be fulfilled in its own time”. I suppose we could say that God does not exactly say "no" to Habakkuk. Instead, God says, "Wait." But again, I think it would be fair to say, that for most of us these are the same answers. For just, as we do not like to be told "no”, we certainly do not like to be told to "wait". Yet that is what God tells Habakkuk. This is what God tells you and me. Waiting, in God's message to Habakkuk - and in the light of the Gospel - means having faith. Waiting means believing that God does hear our prayers and is responding to them, perhaps not on the timeline or schedule of our choosing. It is not easy for us to wait for a resolution of our most desperate desires, but that is what it means to live by faith.

2020 was a difficult year for community sport. The impact of COVID-19 was as dramatic on sport as it was across any other area of our lives. However, sports people are a resilient bunch, and most sports were able to get underway in a reduced form. Camden & District Netball Association (C&DNA) played their 2020 season under strict COVID regulations and was able to provide a 10-week winter competition for just on 800 people, a big reduction from the usual 2,700 netballers that usually turn out for Saturday netball. C&DNA was the only netball association within the southwest Sydney area to hold a 2020 winter competition. The game we all love is back for 2021. If you missed playing netball in 2020, now is the perfect time to dust those netball shoes off. C&DNA are eager to get the 2021 netball season up and running as close to normal as possible, while adhering to all Health NSW guidelines. Narellan Sports Hub is the home of C&DNA, with 30 state of the art courts and a purpose-built facility, it’s easy to see why Camden have the best courts in NSW. C&DNA provides competitions from ages 6 -9 in the NetSetGo program, 10 to 17 in the Junior competition and Seniors from 18 years and over. There are opportunities for players to play competitive netball as well as for those who are looking for a social team. C&DNA has a strong Representative program for ages 11 to 17 as well as Metro League teams who play midweek at Netball Central. Netball is the perfect way to have fun, get active and meet new people. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST We’ve arrived at 2021, and there’s no doubt it has arrived already with it’s own challenges. We’ve all come to terms with the limitations introduced over the past 12 months as a result of COVID. With masks forming part of our ‘everyday’ wear, sanitizer available everywhere we turn and social distancing the ‘new’ norm. Despite this, 2021 will see plenty of new beginnings, wonderful stories and chapters that continue to evolve as we continue on this journey of life. It may be a bumpy ride with hurdles and various obstacles, but rest assured, we’re in it together and we’ll get through this! Look for the beauty in every moment, capture the magic, focus on the positives. It’s our first edition of the year and we are so pleased to be back sharing wonderful local stories of true hope and inspiration! ‘Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be’. Enjoy Your Community News.
