True Community Spirit The local community came together last month to support Macarthur mums Julie Gravina, Cassie Michel and Jessica Gowans, who held a cake stall at Bunnings Gregory Hills and raised over $5,000 for Jeans for Genes. The inspirational trio were joined by their children Charlize (4), Iluka (4) and Henry (5) who are featured in this year’s national Jeans for Genes campaign, which is the iconic campaign that raises funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI). “We were blown away to raise over $5,000 from the stall, of which we saw $4,545 raised from selling cakes, and the rest from selling merchandise and from generous donations made directly to Jeans for Genes on the day. “When we put the word out about our fundraiser, we were overwhelmed to have every baked item donated by local small bakery businesses, as well as locals who love to bake. Thanks to social media we were able to put the word out about our sale into the community through local message boards. We sold out by lunch time!” smiled Jessica Gowans. With 7 children featured this year in the national Jeans for Genes campaign, it was amazing to find that Julie, Cassie and Jessica’s children (who make up 3) are all local. This was a great opportunity for the mums to run a fundraiser and to advocate together for Jeans for Genes. “We are passionate about supporting CMRI to find better treatments and cures for childhood disease, not just for our children, but for all children who have a birth defect or genetic disease. 1 in 20 kids have a birth defect or genetic disease, which means there are a lot of families in Macarthur who also hope for better treatments and cures for their children.” said Jessica. They plan on having another bake sale closer to Jeans for Genes Day. Keep an eye out on social media! Jessica will also be running in this year’s City 2 Surf for Team Jeans for Genes (https://city2surf2019.everydayhero.com/au/jessica-gowans) Jeans for Genes Day will be held on Friday 2nd August. If you would like to raise money or donate, head to www. jeansforgenes.org.au.

Cameron’s Passion for Wildlife Harrington Park’s Cameron Constance is not your average wildlife conservationist. The 17-year-old has started Constance Conservation to help raise awareness about local wildlife through education and land management. “I started Constance Conservation about mid last year and it was really started as a platform to voice a wildlife conservation message and to educate people on not only local wildlife, but wildlife worldwide. The impact of urban development and habitat loss not only within Australia but worldwide ignites my passion for wildlife and motivates me to want to work constantly towards helping and making a difference in wildlife conservation” Cameron told the Oran Park Gazette. He first became involved with wildlife conservation three years ago, whilst doing volunteer work for Bushcare. From there he was given the chance to speak at a peaceful koala rally, where he met similar people who were doing good work for our local community. “This inspired me to get involved with conservation locally. I was always out in the bush and learning about wildlife and so I just started contacting organisations to see what I could do to help make a difference, before starting my own path” he said. With Constance Conservation in its infancy at a grassroots level, Cameron’s vision is to grow it through media and conservation work and to make it into something much bigger, with the aim to run and participate in larger conservation projects in the future. Locally, some of the places he likes to explore through his wildlife conservation include Georges River Reserve, Freres Crossing, Burragorang, Australian Botanic Gardens and Smiths Creek Reserve. Although there’s not one particular person that inspires him the most, it’s a range of people like Sir David Attenborough, Steve Irwin as well as people locally fighting hard for our wildlife that motivate him. “The future for Constance Conservation is very important. I want to make a real difference and showcase just how wonderful and worth saving our wildlife is in Australia. I would love to have Constance Conservation involved with bushland management all over NSW and improve habitat for wildlife. My end goal is that I want to make wildlife documentaries, to reach a larger audience and present them in such a way using my personality to help engage with and educate people all over the world. This has always been a dream of mine from a very young age” ended Cameron. U Cameron Constance | Image: www.facebook.com/constanceconservation

Stare into Space Stargazing Event
at
Council’s
Residents and visitors are invited to stare into space and see what’s written in the stars at Camden Council’s twinkling stargazing event! The event, which will be held on Thursday 11 July, 4:00pm8:00pm, in Town Park, Oran Park (opposite Oran Park Library), will host Macarthur Astronomical Society (MacAstro). Staff from MacAstro, and Council, will be on-hand to help residents of all ages spot different stars, moons and the galaxy through high powered telescopes. MacAstro President, Alan Hobbs, encourages attendees to bring a torch with red cellophane. “Bright lights will hinder what we can see through the telescopes and the red cellophane will limit the negative effect on your eyes Mr Hobbs said. “We’ll be able to spot up to four moons with lots of features and details visible. The gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn, will also be visible, plus an assortment of nebulae and star clusters. “Patience is key – it can take a little bit of practice to learn how to operate a telescope. But, with our help, you’ll be able to view the universe with a great amount of detail and make your experience the best possible. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said residents are also able to stargaze in the comfort of their own homes, with Camden Council Libraries’ free lending telescope collection. “There are seven telescopes available for library members to enjoy Cr Fedeli said. “All you have to do is put your name on the reservation list. When your name is next, you’ll be able to borrow the kit for one month with the option to extend. It’s a terrific amount of time to get real hands-on experience! The stargazing event is free, with attendees able to donate to MacAstro on the night. For more information, call Oran Park Library on 4656 5645 or visit library.camden.nsw.gov.au.

30th Annual Quilt Exhibition Camden Country Quilters Guild will be hosting their 30th Annual Quilt Exhibition, at the Camden Civic Centre (Oxley Street in Camden), on Saturday 27th July from 9:30am to 4:30pm and Sunday 28th July from 9:30am to 4:00pm. Camden Country Quilters Guild is now in their 30th year! Where has the time gone? It all started when Denise Lawler, a local patchwork shop owner, had a flash of inspiration whilst working at the shop in November 1989. “We need a local guild” she said. Kaye Brown’s mother, Joan Goff, a member of Camden CWA, booked the CWA rooms in Murray Street in Camden to have their first meeting in February 1990. About 50 people turned up that Saturday afternoon - so Camden Country Quilters began. Lorraine Wheeler and Kaye Brown decided they would have a quilt show that first year and as they say the rest is history. Since that time, 28 Exhibitions have been held in the AH & I Hall at Camden Showground and now it’s time for a new chapter to begin. They now have a new venue and a new weekend. Their 30th Exhibition will be held on the last weekend in July, Saturday 27th and Sunday, 28th July at the Camden Civic Centre. With a growing Guild, the extra space will be welcome. They can now take advantage of the larger auditorium and do justice to their member’s quilts. There will also be the extra room for an amazing merchant hall and sales table. Camden Country Quilters have supported the local community with giving quilts and raising funds for many organisations and charities in the past 30 years. There will be a quilt raffle, merchant hall and refreshments available and entry will be $6.00. For enquiries, contact Chris Boardman on 0413 762028 or email boardmanc612@gmail. com.

Celebrate Camden’s First Winter Wonderland Larkin Place will be transformed into an exciting winter wonderland, for Camden’s first-ever Winterfest event! The inaugural event will be Camden Council’s first massive threeday event, running from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 July, 10am-9pm. The main attraction will be an ice rink and, for $5, attendees will be able to skate for 20 minutes at a time. There will also be a number of free exciting activities lined up for residents at the event, including: • Entertainment and performances; • Face painting; • Jumping castles; • A Winter-themed market, for a spot of shopping; and • Food and drink. Argyle Street, which runs parallel to Larkin Place, will also be a hive of activity. There will be buskers and street performers providing entertainment throughout Camden Town Centre, local restaurants offering Winter-themed menus, Friday night
socials to enjoy and so much more. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the Winter-themed event was a celebration of the improvements made to Argyle Street and the Camden Town Centre. “This is our most historic centre and it’s very dear to us and our residents” she said. “We’ve been working hard on this area and have made a number of exciting improvements. We’ve undertaken extensive landscaping work, upgraded and widened footpaths and the road, installed new, energy-efficient street lighting on multifunctional poles and so much more. “We’ve also installed new fairy-lights in the Jacaranda trees along Argyle Street. On Saturday 13 July, I will be officially turning on all of the new fairy-lights. “I’m encouraging all our residents to enjoy this beautiful part of the world. Enjoy the activities, eat some great food and support some of our fantastic local businesses”. Camden Council is working closely with the Argyle Street Business Collective to offer an exciting program of events for the remainder of the year to celebrate the Camden Town Centre, including a bigger and better Jacaranda Festival later this year. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Recently I revisited a resource that was produced by the Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay that offered the following reflection: “Pope Francis acknowledges the challenges posed by today’s extraordinary advances in human communications which is like stepping into “a flood tide” of opportunities to mingle and encounter, embrace and support one another. While chaotic, these greater possibilities for communication can become “a genuine experience of fraternity, a caravan of solidarity, a sacred pilgrimage”. At the same time we must resist the temptation to isolate ourselves, to escape and take refuge in the comfort of our privacy, desiring interpersonal relationships provided by sophisticated equipment, by screens and systems which can be switched on and off on command. The Gospel tells us constantly to run the risk of a face-to-face encounter with others, with their physical presence which challenges us, with their pains and pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and continuous interaction” As the suburbs in which we live and work continue to exponentially grow – and more and more homes are built and businesses are opened - I think no matter what our background or way of life we are called (both individually and collectively) not to allow ourselves to be robbed of community. Let us not be people who seek “to hide or keep apart from others, or quietly flit from one place or task to another, without creating deep and stable bonds.” As Pope Francis once said: the Good News means “learning to find Jesus in the faces of others, in their voices, in their pleas” COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD Recently moved into Oran Park Town? Rethinking Kennel Cough The name “kennel cough can be a bit misleading - you might think that if your dog never goes into boarding kennels, they don’t need to be vaccinated. However, any social contact with other dogs from outside your home can put your pooch at risk. Veterinary professionals now prefer “infectious canine cough to describe this disease. Infectious canine cough causes a distinctive “honking cough, often compared to a goose honk. Affected dogs may also have a runny nose, sneezing, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Although the majority of cases are not serious and resolve without treatment, the inflammation in your dog’s respiratory tract can still be very painful. Importantly, they are also at risk of passing the cough on to someone else! If your dog comes into contact with other dogs in the neighbourhood, whether it’s at the park or going for a walk around the block, they may benefit from yearly vaccinations. Speak to your Uni Vets Camden today about vaccination to achieve the right level of protection for you and your dog. U Image Supplied | Shutterstock

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST I recently enjoyed some time to travel, not to exotic destinations overseas or in luxurious beach stays in parts of our world that are warmer than home; but instead lovely little hidden gem communities, much like ours. What I discovered above all else, was that many of these amazing little towns had their own version of 'our community news'. We've all picked up the 'local rag' at one time or another when travelling, and like one of our readers recently described, it's like a well-worn pair of old slippers - familiar and 'ohhh so' homely. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live.Love. Local' and will continue our long tradition of bringing the latest local happenings right to your coffee table; like a warm embrace from an old friend. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Do good and good will come to you'
