Grant Funding Secures Harrington Forest Restoration Harrington Forest’s Cumberland Plain Woodland is set to be restored after Council successfully secured funding of $20,000 from the Australian Government’s Communities Environment Program 2019/2020. The aim of the project is to restore, enhance and protect the critically endangered ecological community, Cumberland Plain Woodland within Harrington Forest. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli said the project would create a great future connection between residents and the local environment. “Camden residents are lucky enough to be living amongst many fantastic environmental locations like Harrington Forest and this is a great win for the community” Cr Fedeli said. “This project will deliver both positive environmental and social outcomes with plans in place to host citizen science activities at Harrington Forest. “I thank both Federal Environment Minister the Honourable Sussan Ley and Macarthur MP Dr Mike Freelander for their support in securing this funding and look forward to the project taking shape”. The works, expected to be completed by December 2020, include: • Removal of woody weeds throughout the five-hectare project site; and • Citizen science activities with the Bushcare group to install 10 nest boxes for native birds and mammals within the restored site. Restoration of the site will be completed through primary and secondary weed treatment throughout the five-hectare site. r

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Recently online, I came across an article from the New York Times entitled “Where is God in a Pandemic?” In this article - that is well worth reading in full - the author offers the following reflection: “I’ve heard an avalanche of feelings in the last month: panic, fear, anger, sadness, confusion and despair … even the most religious people ask me: Why is this happening? And: Where is God in all of this? … In the end the most honest answer to the question of why the Covid-19 virus is killing thousands of people, why infectious diseases ravage humanity and why there is suffering at all is: We don’t know. For me, this is the most honest and accurate answer. One could also suggest how viruses are part of the natural world and in some way contribute to life, but this approach fails abjectly when speaking to someone who has lost a friend or loved one. An important question for the believer in times of suffering is this: Can you believe in a God that you don’t understand? But if the mystery of suffering is unanswerable, where can the believer go in times like this? For the Christian and perhaps even for others the answer is Jesus … In these frightening times, Christians may find comfort in knowing that when they pray to Jesus, they are praying to someone who understands them not only because he is divine and knows all things, but because he is human and experienced all things. But those who are not Christian can also see him as a model for care of the sick … When Jesus saw a person in need, the Gospels tell us that his heart was “moved with pity.” He is a model for how we are to care during this crisis: with hearts moved by pity … I don’t understand why people are dying, but I can follow the person who gives me a pattern for life”. r

Camden residents have just won gold, with Oran Park Leisure Centre to be home to the area’s first Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool. Camden Council accepted the tender by Warren and Mahoney Architects Australia Pty Ltd for the design of the facility at a recent Ordinary Meeting. The facility will include: • A 50-metre indoor swimming pool; • Increased gym area and leisure water area; and • A decked car park structure. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the centre will add another state-of-the-art sport and recreation facility to the area. “Council is committed to providing the community with high quality sport and recreation facilities, with an expanded Oran Park Leisure Centre to meet the community’s needs” Cr Fedeli said. “Upgrading the pool from 25 metres to 50 metres will much better serve the community, as will an expanded gym area and decked car park. “It is exciting to think the Camden area will be home to so many state-of-the-art sporting facilities in the future. This includes Narellan Sports Hub, the Fergusons Land Cricket Facility, our new Kirkham Park BMX park, our first synthetic football field at Nott Oval in Narellan and soon the Oran Park Leisure Centre. “The developer contributions from Greenfields Development Company will enable Council to design and construct the Oran Park Leisure Centre, another state-of-the-art facility for the community. I look forward to seeing the design of the facility in the near future”. The facility has an estimated completion date in mid to late 2024. r A great addition to the community | Image: Camden Council

Gymnasiums, yoga, indoor pools, and dance studios have now reopened, and kids’ sport can resume across NSW from 1 July, as more COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Deputy Premier John Barilaro has thanked the community for its patience while the Government works through its COVID-19 recovery plan that is built around health advice. “I’m proud of this State for following the health advice and flattening the curve to such a point, where we can now reintroduce kids’ sports and open gyms” Mr Barilaro said. “Sport and exercise boosts morale and this is exactly what NSW needs right now.” From 13 June last month, the following were allowed: • Fitness, gymnasiums, pilates, yoga and dance studios reopened with up to 10 people per class and 100 people in an indoor venue; • Community centres, including their recreational facilities reopened; • Some indoor recreational facilities including pools and saunas reopened with restricted numbers; The four square metre rule must also be applied at all times. Community sport competitions can restart for those aged 18 years and under from 1 July. Health Minister Brad Hazzard said COVID-19 safety plans for each activity or sport are critical to enable this re-start. “Sport and businesses will need to do things a little differently than in pre-COVID-19 times and following their safety plan is key to keeping people safe” Mr Hazzard said. “Re-opening kids’ sporting competitions on 1 July gives groups and local government which manages many of these facilities, time to work through all the new changes”. Acting Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee said indoor and outdoor community sports for those aged 18 years and under are ready to return from 1 July. “Children and young people will be thrilled they can get together with friends and teammates again and I am sure parents will welcome the news too” Mr Lee said. “NSW loves sport, and I am so pleased clubs and organisations will now be able to plan their fixtures list for their seasons to resume”. A decision on a potential return date for adult community sport will be made at a later stage. r Article: NSW Government – Office of Sport. Stay Safe This Winter This Winter, Deputy Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said that its important residents remember to be careful when using heaters and fireplaces and electric blankets. “Don’t put your family at risk this Winter. Check that all your appliances are switched off and ensure that open fires have been fully extinguished. If we all do our bit to minimise the risks in our home, we can all stay safer together” he said. Minister for Police and Emergency Services, David Elliot said, with families spending more time at home than ever before it is crucial, we prepare our homes. “FRNSW do a great job in keeping our community safe, now it is our time as NSW residents to do the right thing by our families, listen to the experts and ensure our homes are safe”. Some simple steps the community can take include: • Never ever leave cooking unattended • Only working smoke alarms save lives - test your smoke alarm today • Keep everything one metre away from your heater • Do not overload your power boards with appliances like heaters and electric blankets • Strong fire screens should be set up in front of open fires • Turn off your electric blanket at night • Do not use outdoor heating and cooking equipment inside your home. The use of this type of equipment indoors could lead to the build-up of carbon monoxide which could be fatal FRNSW have now launched their Get Ready For Winter checklist online and are urging the community to download this and ensure their homes are prepared. Afford Enriches the Lives of Oran Park Locals Living with Disability Oran Park locals living with disability are engaging in meaningful and enriching life experiences during isolation thanks to one-to-one support from Afford (The Australian Foundation for Disability). For the past three years, the staff at Afford’s Oran Park Day Program have supported Mathew to get involved in the things he loves, such as going to the gym and immersing in nature. Adapting to COVID-19 restrictions, Afford worked with Mathew to change his previous day program based supports, to individualised one-to-one support from an Afford Lifestyle Assistant. With assistance, Mathew recently visited Mount Annan Botanical Gardens. The outing combined one of his much-loved interests and provided personalised social interaction for a healthy mindset. “I love going out into nature and enjoying some sun rays” said Mathew. Krystan also benefits from one-to-one support from Afford. At home, she explores her creativity through art projects. Her Afford lifestyle assistant encourages her to keep up an exercise routine to stay active and healthy. During one-to-one support, Krystan is progressing her numeracy and literacy skills. Gaining confidence in using numbers and letters for everyday life is an NDIS goal for Krystan. With her support person, she completes addition and subtraction worksheets and plays fun maths games. Through books, they read for entertainment and explore new places, people, and cultures of the world. “Recent world events have meant that we have to adapt to different ways of delivering disability supports. With one-to-one inhome supports, our clients can continue to work towards their goals, even while isolation measures are in place” said Antoinette Imbruglia, Team Leader at Oran Park Day Program. With individualised support from Afford’s Oran Park Day Program staff, people living with disability in the local community can develop their skills engage in activities they love and live life their way. Afford is a registered charity and has been operating in Australia for 68 years, providing a range of disability supports to thousands of people every day. Oran Park Probus Club Whilst all meetings, regular activities and outings of Oran Park Probus Club are currently suspended due to the Covid-19 virus, the Committee has resumed its meetings via Zoom, and they continue to discuss ways in which members can connect. Members were invited to attend a Zoom presentation about the research work that is done at Sydney University’s Plant Institute at Cobbitty. It was particularly interesting to hear what goes on in our neighbourhood. At the next Zoom meeting, our speaker will talk about the role of CareFlight in the community. Although restrictions are starting to ease, it is unlikely that we will be able to resume normal meetings for a while. However, anyone who is interested in knowing more about Probus, whose aim is to promote fun, fellowship and friendship to retired and semi-retired people, can call on 0410 758755 or email oranpark@probusclubs.com.au for further information.

A Stitch in Time

Most humans like attention. Little humans particularly so. They like attention so much that they don’t mind whether it’s negative or positive. They would much prefer positive attention as it is unpleasant to be in trouble all the time and not very good for one’s long-term mental health. But if they don’t get any of the good stuff, they will take the negative any day of the week. But here is the trick… 40 years of research tells us that if you want to encourage positive behaviours in your child, you give more attention to positive behaviours. Energy flows where attention goes. If you are paying lots of attention to ‘naughty’, you are going to get a bundle of ‘naughty’. What would you prefer? Positive or negative behaviour? Feed the positive with descriptive praise, connection, smiles, hugs, thumbs up, high fives – lots of positive attention. So, what do you do about the negative behaviours? One strategy is called ‘planned ignoring’. You ignore the minor negative behaviours. Completely withdraw your attention – no talking, no eye contact. As soon as (the split second) your child starts behaving in a positive way, you bring your attention back to your child. No need for lectures or yakking. Chances are your child knows what he or she is doing. Truly, it’s that simple, pay attention to the positive and withdraw your attention from the negative. However, if your child is exhibiting serious mistaken behaviour, planned ignoring is not the right tool for the job. Here are some links for further reading: • https://raisingchildren.net.au/school-age/behaviour/ behaviour-management-tips-tools/planned-ignoring • https://www.thechildrensbookreview.com/weblog/2016/01/ yak-yak-yak-the-trouble-with-modern-parenting-thomas-wphelan-phd.html It is important to be mindful that your child's behaviour may escalate when you start using Planned Ignoring because s/he is no longer receiving negative attention. Remember to increase your attention to your child's positive behaviours. Stop using Planned Ignoring if your child's behaviour escalates to hurting self or others. r Image: www.pixabay.com

2020 has been a challenging year for us all. Despite the setbacks, Camden Country Quilters Guild have continued to work tirelessly making and supplying much needed quilts to the community. Following the devastating fire season, the group supplied quilts to those affected locally and the South Coast/Southern Highlands areas. They made cooling neck ties and face protection towels for the heroic fire brigades. Wildlife Rescue were recipients of many joey pouches for those animals injured and orphaned during this time. The Banksia Ward at Camden Hospital, Kids of Macarthur, Camden RSL and Tahmoor Veterinary Hospital also received their quilts and masks. Whilst the Camden Country Quilters Annual Exhibition has been cancelled this month due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the members have remained positive. Their focus is on the NSW Guild Exhibition and Show at Darling Harbour from 29th October to November 1st, where they hope to raise funds for ongoing local projects. The group are considering a street display for the Camden Festival later in the year, giving shop keepers and the local community a chance to hold a mini exhibition. Many members have thrived during lockdown, having been kept busy with unfinished projects as well as new ones. This has included ‘The Houses Quilt’ where they have had the opportunity to create our town in the form of a quilt. The group have embraced technology thanks to YouTube mini projects too, organised by Jodie Stapleton, the group’s Workshop Co-Ordinator. For more information about the Camden Country Quilters Guild including how to become a member, search for their page on Facebook. r The COVID-19 project – The Houses Quilt | Image Supplied by Camden Country Quilters Guild

New Catherine Field School Given Go Ahead A new state-of-the-art public school in Camden is one step closer, with the NSW Government approving the final plans for the new Catherine Field Primary School. Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said the school, to be located off O’Keefe Drive in Oran Park, will provide high-quality learning spaces for generations to come. “This brand-new school is wonderful news for our growing community and, once complete, will provide places for more than 1,000 students from kindergarten to year 6” Mr Sidgreaves said. “The school will not only provide new and improved education infrastructure but will also inject $45 million investment into our local area and create more than 400 jobs during construction”. Construction will soon begin on the new school, which will include innovative new flexible learning spaces, administrative and staff facilities, a hall, library, canteen and covered outdoor learning area. Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said the new Catherine Field Primary School illustrates the NSW Government’s commitment to invest in new and improved learning environments right across the State. “We are investing an unprecedented $6.7 billion in education over the next four years to ensure NSW students are bestequipped to take on the future” Mrs Mitchell said. Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said Catherine Field Primary School is one of nine major education projects determined in the past two months through the NSW Government’s new Planning System Acceleration Program. “Combined, these projects will not only deliver new and upgraded learning environments for more than 9,000 students in NSW, they will also create opportunities for 5,650 new jobs during construction” Mr Stokes said. The three schools are the latest projects to be determined through the Planning System Acceleration Program that is fasttracking planning assessments to keep people in jobs and the economy moving during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program has created opportunities for more than 23,000 direct jobs and almost $13 billion worth of economic investment across NSW. Best in Show: Victoria Celebrates 40 Years What started out as a love of dogs as a child has turned into a successful career for local dog enthusiast Victoria Masterfield who this year celebrates 40 years of showing dogs. Victoria will reach the amazing milestone later this year. Her career has taken her all over the world, where she has won many awards since the 1980’s. She also owns a small business, Comb and Collar – Grooming by Victoria. “My parents showed dogs since I was young, and I grew up with a love of dogs. I first started showing dogs when I was a teenager. This shows my age, but I have been showing dogs for almost 40 years. I specialise in American Cocker Spaniels and currently own 7 dogs. This includes 4 that live with me and I am in partnership with 3 more with my friends” explained Victoria to the Oran Park Gazette. With so many highlights over the years, Victoria has won Best in Show awards and she is driven to win a very special one at home. “Over my 40 years, I have won many Best in Show awards. My most memorable is the Dogs NSW Spring Fair, where it was the first time in history for an American Cocker Spaniel to win the show. My dream is to win Best in Show at Sydney Royal Easter Show” Victoria smiled. Showing dogs can take months of preparation for the big day. Once it arrives, it is often a long day that can be quite rewarding at the end. “The day starts early, prepping the dogs for the show. Washing, blow-drying, and scissoring in the morning before heading to the show early to get a good spot ringside and near my friends. This is followed by a quick blow-dry and scissoring before heading into the ring. If all goes well, I will show the dog 3 times. This is against it’s breed, then against other breeds, then fingers crossed the judge likes the dog and I win Best in Show” she said. With restrictions being lifted and the world slowly returning to normal since the coronavirus pandemic, Victoria is looking forward to returning to the ring. “I feel honoured and privileged to show dogs. I love travelling to places I have never seen, meeting new people, catching r Puppies can be shown too! | Image Supplied up with friends, being with my dogs and hopefully winning prizes” she ended.

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST July has arrived and it is bitterly cold. As I write this, my feet are snug in slipper sox by the heater. We are making slow progress, one day at a time, with the relaxing of restrictions due to COVID-19. This month sees the reinstatement of team sports, and increased numbers in group gatherings with steady increases at pubs, clubs and restaurants. We’ve also witnessed some setbacks in neighbouring States, which has caused some trepidation in further releasing of restrictions. If you’re anything like me, I’ve used the time in isolation wisely by working on mini projects that I seemingly ‘never’ had time for before this. Coming out of time in ‘lockdown’ sees my freshly renovated caravan at the ready for many a trip, particularly relevant due to the current state of play with restrictions on travel and the delayed reopening of the borders. The perfect excuse to ‘holiday at home!’. It’s time to become a tourist in your own backyard. We are fortunate to be at the foothills of some amazing hidden gems...... time to explore! Enjoy Your Community News. ‘Almost everything will work again if you ‘unplug’ it for a few minutes, including you!’.
