Brayden Raises Thousands for 65 Roses With National Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Awareness Month taking place last month, local Brayden Koevoets has just completed the 65 Roses Challenge, raising over $4,000 in much needed funds for the charity - Cystic Fibrosis Community Care (CFCC). The inspirational 11-year-old was joined by his family when taking the 65 Roses Challenge. This involved daily exercise of 65 squats a day until he reached the initial goal of $650, which he smashed thanks to the support of the local community. Brayden was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) via a newborn screening test at just 8 weeks old. According to Cystic Fibrosis Australia, CF ‘primarily affects the lungs and digestive system because of a malfunction in the exocrine system that’s responsible for producing saliva, sweat, tears and mucus. People with CF develop an abnormal amount of excessively thick and sticky mucus within the lungs, airways and the digestive system’. “Brayden decided to get involved with the 65 Roses Challenge as he is living everyday with the disease and he wanted to help raise funds for the organisations that help us” said Michelle Koevoets, Brayden’s mother. “Brayden spends around 90 minutes a day on nebuliser machines or pressure devices, to keep his lungs healthy. He also needs to stay fit, so a lot of exercise as well as extra nutritional requirements (in other words - a lot of food!) as his body cannot absorb the fat and nutrients the way our body does. Brayden also takes around 30 tablets a day. Besides all this, he is a typical 11-yearold boy who loves school, sports, and mates” she explained. If you would like to support Brayden, you can donate at https://65roses2020.everydayhero.com/au/team-brayden. r

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Recently, I came across an article from the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne (www.cam.org.au) called “1000 ways to love your neighbour during Coronavirus”. In this article, the author offers some great insights: “As the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak continues to spread, normal life is increasingly disrupted. Restrictions on mass gatherings are now a global phenomenon … We’ve been told to wash our hands much more and see people much less … It's a time when each of (us) should intentionally commit to … the ‘Me & You + 2’ response. This simply means take care of yourself and your loved ones, and one other potentially vulnerable person. Everyone - young, old and in-between has this calling and capacity. Fortunately, our digital age provides a raft of ways to reach out and love our neighbour during the threat of Coronavirus. Here are some suggestions: Make a call: ‘Every hand we don’t shake must become a phone call we make’. Be generous with phone calls, text messages, emails with photos, Facetime, WhatsApp. Kids call your parents and grandparents; parents and grandparents, call your children and grandchildren. It's especially important to take the time to call people in your life who you might not speak to very often. Shop local: Local business owners are our neighbours too, and while national corporations will be able to weather these rough times, smaller businesses may struggle over the next few weeks. Where you can, shop local. Fight the hoarding impulse: Over-stockpiling leads to a shortage of essential provisions for more vulnerable communities that don't have the means or opportunity. Buy in moderation, so others are also able to meet their needs. However you go about loving your neighbour, together and individually we can create a strong web of love to hold and care for everyone as this crisis unfolds. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are my members of my family you did to me.” Matt 25:40 NRSV” FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

#StayHome #ComeToChurch Well there’s a mixed message! It seems that even as our COVID-19 restrictions continue to thaw, that we won’t be back to gatherings of 100 people any time soon. NewLife Anglican Church used to have a couple of meetings in excess of that size every Sunday, so we won’t be opening our doors any time soon, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want you to join us. Despite the doors being closed, church hasn’t shut down and we’d still love you to #ComeToChurch. You can join us from the comfort and anonymity of your own living room each Sunday. We livestream the service at 8:45am on Sunday morning and if you’d like to watch it later, you can simply start the stream from YouTube whenever you’d like. You can find our stream via our website front page or on YouTube at www.youtube.com/c/newlifeoranparklive. What can you expect? We’ll sing (no one can hear you!), have a kid’s talk, read the Bible, pray, and then we’ll explain the part of the Bible we’ve read. I hope you’ll find it warm and engaging. There’s even an invitation for you to share your needs or prayer points with us electronically, so that you might know and experience the support of the church right where you are. If you’ve always wondered what church is like this strange season we’re now in, it provides a great way to get a taster. We hope you’ll enjoy it and when we eventually are back to gathering in person again, you’d be very welcome to darken the doors and find a seat in our building. So, keep being safe and give something new a try. Join us online this Sunday. We hope you hear that invitation as clearly as the hashtags #stayhome and #cometochurch.

It’s your chance to hear what everyone has been getting up to while social distancing with Camden Council’s #whatscamden social media campaign. The seven-week campaign encourages the community to connect with each another and share what activities they’ve been enjoying, while spending more time at home. Every Monday, Council will announce the weekly theme via social media, asking residents to contribute their own image using the relevant hashtag of the week. Residents are able to show each other what they’re watching, wearing, playing, eating and much more. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the campaign will also give residents ideas for new activities to do with their own families. “This campaign is a great opportunity to increase community connection during disruptions to our normal lives brought on by COVID-19” Cr Fedeli said. “We are lucky enough to be living in a digital world, giving us the capabilities to connect with each other from the comfort of our own homes. “Many families are still staying home, and this is their chance to have some fun and touch base with what their neighbours are doing throughout Camden and even form new friendships. “I urge the community to come together and get behind the campaign. Whether you find a new show on Netflix to dig into, learn a new skill or even see a new recipe, I am sure many of us will benefit from this”. Residents who post their images using the weekly hashtag will go into the running to win a weekly prize. For more information on the campaign, follow Camden Council on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. r Show us your #whatscamden image | Image: District Gazette

Historical Naming of New Parks and Reserves Historical significance will continue to run through the heart of the Camden area, after Council endorsed the names of nine new parks. Greenfields Development Company requested Council’s support in naming seven parks and two reserves in Oran Park before being sent to the Geographical Naming Board to be formalised. The new names of the parks and reserves have been connected to the history of the area and include: 1. Angus Park – in recognition of the farming heritage of Oran Park. Angus is a breed of cattle that was imported into Tasmania in the 1820s; 2. Brooking Park – Frank Brooking was Mayor of Camden from 1993 to 1997. He was a respected civic leader and member of Camden Rotary, Rural Fire Service and many other community committees and organisations. Frank Brooking passed away in 2013; 3. Dawson Park – The Hon John Dawson-Damer was a member of the English aristocracy. He and his wife purchased Oran Park House in 1969. The Hon John Dawson-Damer passed away in 2000; 4. Julia Reserve – The Perich family purchased the land on which Oran Park Town stands in 1984. Julia Perich was a member of the family who emigrated from the former Yugoslavia (now Croatia) to pursue their own Australian dream. Julia Perich passed away in 1984; 5. Singer Park – the Oran Park Raceway was built by the volunteers of the Singer Car Club; 6. Whiteman Park – Charles Thomas Whiteman was Mayor of Camden from 1892-1893 and was one of the first elected representatives of the Camden Municipality in 1889. The Whiteman family have a longstanding history in Camden

including the establishment of a Whiteman's department store on Argyle Street which was open for business from 1878 until 2000; 7. Hollywood Park – whilst the majority of the proposed park names in Oran Park Town reflect the motor racing history of Oran Park, the proposed naming of Hollywood Park reflects the more recent history of Oran Park Town. The park is located adjacent to the Oran Park Town sign which is referenced by locals as ‘the Hollywood sign’ and this local reference is reflected in the name Hollywood Park; 8. Kolombo Reserve – Kolombo Perich migrated to Australia in 1948 along with his wife Julia Perich. Kolombo and his wife Julia were proud Camden residents and supported local charities and causes, which continues today through their family members. Kolombo Perich passed away in 1999; and 9. Titan Park – at the time when Oran Park Raceway was operating, the Police conducted Police Dog Training at the Raceway. In recognition of this, it is proposed to name a large park, in the southern corner of the development, Titan Park, after general purpose police dog ‘Titan’, who was killed in the line of duty in 2004. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the selected park names were a fitting tribute to the historical significance in the area. “These parks provide the community fantastic space to enjoy with your family or friends while paying tribute to the history of the area through their names” Cr Fedeli said. “The Camden area is rich in history and this is a great way for the whole community to pay their respect for the people who made it what it is today”. The proposed parks and reserves will now be referred to the Geographical Naming Board for public exhibition.

Wests Group Macarthur’s Parma for a Farmer Campaign raises over $15,000 for Local Farmers

Wests Group Macarthur are pleased to announce the results of their ‘Parma for a Farmer’ campaign, having raised $15,152 for Dilly Drought Drive efforts. The campaign ran from January to March and saw $1 from every chicken Schnitzel and Parmigiana sold across Wests venues donated in support of the local farming community. The Dilly Drought Drive, an auspice of Rural Aid, is run by a team of volunteers led by Sharon Robertson and helped by Tia Veech who dedicate their time to supporting farmers from the Campbelltown, Camden, and Wollondilly Shire Council areas. It has been a long and difficult road for farmers in the Macarthur region, following a long period of devastating drought, recent bush fires that ravaged parts of the region and now Covid-19 impacting their businesses and livelihoods. On accepting the donation, Sharon said, “We are so incredibly grateful for the support of Wests Group Macarthur and what this contribution means to our farmers. This is a boost in our efforts to assist our farmers on their road to recovery and for future proofing their farms and farm businesses”. Sharon continued, “100% of funds raised will be used to deliver practical support in what is now considered a drought recovery phase, with the long-lasting effects of the prolonged dry continuing to impact local farmers. This phase includes water delivery and storage solutions to secure future water supply, hay and fodder relief and most importantly food, hampers and gift cards for farmers who have been hurting financially”. Earlier in the year, the Wests team had the pleasure of visiting Dilly Drought Drive farms firsthand and heard just how difficult this period has been. Seventh generation dairy farmer and Dilly Drought Drive Liaison Gavin Moore said prior to receiving rainfall, “There was only enough water on the farm to see them out only another couple of weeks. Without the rain, we were looking down the barrel of having to sell the farm and move on, as it was going to be impossible to continue without a water resource”. Gavin shared that at one point they had managed to hold a small amount of water reserve on the property, however it was completely drained by firefighting helicopters to protect his and neighbouring properties, leaving his home bone dry and in danger. Lynette Keneally from Top 40 Orchards had also been dealing with the effects of years of drought, water shortages, lost crops, and financial stress having missed a complete sale season of Christmas trees crops. In December 2019, Lynette had to fight a fire wall at her fence line only to have her property and crops wiped out by downpours soon after. When asked what keeps her going everyday facing such adversity, Lynette commented, “It is part of our fibre, and in our DNA. Every time we get wiped out, we do our best to turn on our heels, dip a little deeper and maintain the mantra ‘this too shall pass’”. Lynette credits her resilience to a thick skin, being part of a strong local community and the financial and emotional support provided by the Dilly Drought Drive. Both Gavin and Lynette echo that the farms will go on, however note that there are long lasting financial ramifications they are working through and a significant mental toll from the last few years saying that the Dilly Drought Drive helped to “get them through”. Wests Group hopes that their support will go a long way to making a difference now and into the future. Tony Mathew, CEO of Wests Group Macarthur said, “Wests Group wanted to be able to deliver support in a practical and impactful way and are thrilled to be able to contribute to getting farmers back on their feet. We thank our members for getting behind the campaign and helping us to deliver much needed funds to the Dilly Drought Drive”. Wests Group believes in empowering our community with social support, education, and donations through the adoption of tailored strategies to ensure the needs of individuals and families are met. Hydroponic House Dismantled After Nearly $600,000 Worth Of Cannabis Seized A man has been charged after police seized cannabis worth nearly $600,000 and dismantled a hydroponic set-up at a home in Sydney’s west. Earlier this year, detectives from the Drug and Firearms Squad commenced an investigation under Strike Force Polmont into the activities of a criminal syndicate believed to be involved in the cultivation and supply of cannabis across Sydney. Following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives executed a search warrant at a home at Oran Park just before 2pm (Monday 18 May 2020). During the search, investigators seized 195 cannabis plants located inside five bedrooms, with an estimated potential street value of $585,000. Officers also located a large sophisticated hydroponic setup which was dismantled. A short time later, a 27-year-old man arrived at the home and was subsequently arrested by strike force investigators. He was taken to Narellan Police Station and charged with enhanced indoor cultivate cannabis for commercial purpose and use/consume/waste etc electricity without authority. It will be alleged in court that the man was involved in the cultivation and supply of cannabis across Sydney. The Cabramatta man was refused bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court (Tuesday 19 May 2020). Drug and Firearms Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent John Watson, said criminal syndicates operating hydro-houses in suburban areas put neighbouring

residents at risk. “Hydroponic houses have the potential to put surrounding houses and people in danger and they can be anywhere in the community,” Det Supt Watson said. “In this instance, no one was living in the Oran Park home – it was solely being used for the cultivating cannabis. “We would ask that the public remain vigilant to what is happening in their suburb and report any suspicious behaviour to police. “Make no mistake – these activities are linked to organised crime and other illicit activities. Those involved simply want to profit no matter the cost,” Det Supt Watson said. Signs of a hydro house include, but should not be confined to: • Increased security measures (roller shutters, fences, vicious dogs in the yard) • Increased use of electricity • Increased use of water • Illegal connection to electrical supply • Condensation on windows • Continual running of generators and lights • Disposal of large amounts of garbage • Large quantities of chemicals and fertilisers around the premises • Locks or other methods in place to prevent access to the electricity meter box • Discarded plastic containers and strong odours (fertilisers, liquid and bagged growing cultures). Investigations by the Drug and Firearms Squad are continuing.

PARENTS CORNER

Oran Park Probus Club

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

Parenting is the longest shortest time isn’t it? While you are in it, it feels unrelenting. When you look on the past year, you think ‘where did that time go?’. How can we make the best of our parenting days?

“Let me parent out of my best hopes rather than my worst fears” Sarah Bessey I think Sarah Bessey has something there – hope trumps fear. Focusing on the positives and hopes has a different energy to focusing on the negatives and everything that is going wrong. It can also be hard to do, because as humans our brains have a negative bias. As Dr Rick Hanson says (https://youtu.be/jpuDyGgIeh0) … If your child did 5 great things today, 4 neutral things, and 1 not-so-great thing, what would keep you awake at night? Now, parents who have been doing the job for quite a while frequently know the benefits of the ‘long game’. Being consistent and persistent. Your kids are not going to learn their manners, to pick up their socks, to speak kindly, to manage their emotions, and to share, any time soon, no matter how quickly you insist they do. Getting frustrated with them just leads to a cycle of frustration – parent gets frustrated, child returns frustration, parent gets more frustrated, and so it goes. This is what I have noticed about parents (and humans in general) - when they focus on the positives, if they try it once, and the child does not respond, they say ‘it didn’t work’. But when they focus on the negatives, and the child does not respond in the desired way, they keep using it. Parenting is like a dripping tap. Saying the same thing over and over again with very little emotion. Dr Becky Bailey in the USA says that you generally need to say something 2000 times before the kids will get it. What is less stressful? Parenting with hope in our hearts and a generous amount of humour? Or parenting out of fear, worry, anxiety, anger, and frustration? How do you want to look back on your parenting days when your eldest is 18 years of age and heading out into the world? (By the way, they don’t have to be complete humans at the age of 18, their brains are still developing into their mid-twenties). r

The Oran Park Probus Club has suspended all activities and meetings, due to government restrictions to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 Coronavirus. Although these restrictions are to be gradually eased, it is unlikely that our meetings will resume for a while yet. Socialising with other Probus members has turned into selfisolation. This has given members more time to devote to old and new hobbies, many turning to technology to stay connected with family and friends. Our members were invited to a Zoom coffee and chat meeting last month and the club is still producing its monthly newsletter, emailed to the members. The aim of Probus is to promote fun, fellowship and friendship to retired and semi- retired people in the community. Once the government restrictions have been lifted, we invite anyone interested to come along to one of our meetings, listen to a guest speaker and have a chat and a cup of coffee. Meetings are normally held monthly at the NewLife Church at Oran Park. If you are interested to learn more about Oran Park Probus Club, please contact the secretary, Liz on phone 0410 758755 or email oranpark@ probusclubs.com.au.

Back In Five! If cats could talk, Chester would have some story. The 12-year-old cat was reunited with his Narwee-based owner recently, after disappearing five years ago. The feline was found almost 40 kilometres away from home in Oran Park before being handed over to Council rangers. Chester’s owner, Kelly Corbett, said she was shocked to have her pet back after fearing the worst. “About five years ago, my husband rescued a kitten from his work which joined Chester at home and after that Chester just went missing” Ms Corbett said. “We thought he might not have liked the kitten and he might have even gotten run over. I figured if somebody found him that they would have taken him to a vet to have his chip scanned. “I don’t know if he’s been on the street. It is funny because we were looking at adopting another cat and Camden Council’s rangers contacted me to tell me they had found Chester, so I am stoked. “I think it is important to let pet owners know that keeping your pet’s details up to date is what brings your pet home if something like this ever happens”. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said Chester’s miracle story is a reminder to residents to continue being responsible pet-owners. “All cats and dogs are required to be registered and microchipped across Australia and you can do that either with Council or your local vet” Cr Fedeli said. “If you ever move homes, it is also important to update your pet’s details. “Pets are important members of the family and I am glad to hear Ms Corbett has been reunited with Chester. I am sure he has plenty to share with his family”. For more information on registering your pet or updating your pet’s details, go to www.camden.nsw.gov.au and search ‘register your pet’ or visit petregistry.nsw.gov.au. r Feature Article: [Cover] Chester reunited with his owner | Image: Camden Council [Above] www.pixabay.com

Sisters Make Letter Writing Fun Again When you were growing up as a kid, do you remember the excitement of the postman delivering a letter to the mailbox, personally addressed to you? It was like Christmas all over again, as you’d open it up to read it, before grabbing a pen and paper to reply. Sadly, letters were replaced by emails over the years and the art of writing a letter has declined. Three local sisters, Penny, Alice and Claire Jager, are bringing it all back. The students have started P.A.C Pals, where they have began writing letters and drawing pictures to share with their new friends. “If online home schooling was not enough, I thought to myself about how the lack of seeing friends and connecting socially was hard for my girls. I felt that a personal way that they could stay in touch was through writing letters. It also gave them the opportunity to make new friends too” said Jillian Jager, the girls’ mother. P.A.C (an acronym for Penny, Alice and Claire) Pals has allowed the girls to be creative through sharing stories, writing poetry and drawing pictures. The simple act of placing a stamp on an envelope and popping it into the street posting box has become an exciting event, particularly whilst we are all self-isolating at home during the coronavirus pandemic. At this stage, the Jager sisters have posted nine letters and they hope to do more in the future. Their mother Jillian has also created a Facebook group for families and friends. “It’s such an uncertain time for little people. They aren’t socialising as they should, and online learning means that letter writing isn’t the norm right now. Pens and paper have been replaced by a keyboard. There’s a personal touch associated with writing and sending letters. Who doesn’t like a surprise in your home letterbox?” shared Jillian. For more information about P.A.C Pals, email Jillian at jillianjager@gmail.com. r

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST It’s hard to articulate how very challenging the last few weeks have been for all of us. Could anyone possibly have imagined that (in 2020) our everyday lives and daily activities would be curtailed, sanctioned, restricted and in part - even outlawed? Like almost every local business The District Gazette has also been impacted. Business closures and restrictive practices have definitely weighed heavily on small business owners ability to advertise. Despite the challenges, The District Gazette has continued to share the amazing community spirit we have all played witness to during these times, directly to your letterbox! You asked, and we continued.... to deliver. We thank you, our readers and our friends in business, for your support during these tough times! Behind the Gazette masthead, we are a local family owned and operated business, just like yours or your friends, or neighbours. Just like you, we shop local, our children attend the local schools and we dine out at the restaurants and cafes down the street (when we’re allowed!). It’s true, we are your biggest cheerleaders and are thankful you are ours! As I write this, there are glimmers of hope and light somewhere deep in the tunnel ahead; announcements to return to school and work have just been made. This may just be the beginning of ‘back to a ‘new’ normal’, one where I am certain we will all do things ‘a little differently’. Enjoy Your Community News. Let yesterday be yesterday, no matter what has changed.
