Exciting Plans for Schools in Oran Park

 Artist’s Impression of the new Oran Park High School | Image Supplied

The Department of Education is planning a new High School at Oran Park to accommodate the expanding student population in the area. Oran Park High School will accommodate up to 2,000 students, and will be the biggest public school in the Macarthur area. The new High School’s facilities will support Year 5 and 6 students transitioning from Primary School into High School by linking the campuses and providing collaborative spaces. Current target date for construction completion is late 2019; ready for students at the commencement of Term 1 2020. The upgrade at Oran Park Public School will provide an additional 24 new classrooms, expansion of the administration and staff areas, a larger Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA), scattered shade structures, additional student amenities and landscaping in and around the new classrooms. Construction on the project at Oran Park Public School is expected to start in mid-2018 and be completed in early 2020. These comments were made by a Department of Education spokesperson.

Private Hospital for South West Sydney Wins DA Approval The NSW Government has approved concept plans for a new private hospital at the heart of Sydney’s South-West Growth Centre, part of a world-class medical hub to serve the region’s booming, yet under-serviced population. The approval provides the framework for construction of a 473-bed, six-storey, ultra-modern hospital. Once complete, Camden Medical Campus will be the largest private hospital in NSW. The 4.2-hectare site is at Gregory Hills, eight kilometres from Camden, six kilometres from Campbelltown, and 15 kilometres from Badgerys Creek. Approximately 30,000 homes have recently been built within five kilometres of the site, and a further 90,000 are planned. By 2026, the area will host 300,000 new residents – a new city the size of Canberra. Camden Medical Campus will be the first major private hospital to be delivered within a mixed-use precinct. Worldclass medical facilities will sit amongst leisure, entertainment, hotels, commercial buildings, and large format retail. “This hospital will give residents in Camden and the greater South West Sydney region access to cutting edge health services, within a sophisticated, master planned lifestyle precinct,” said Satwant Calais, Director of the Gregory Hills Corporate Park. “Camden Medical Campus will be purpose-built to accommodate the latest health technology and the most modern models of integrated care.” Greg Hardes, Managing Director of Hardes and Associates, Australia’s premier acute hospital demand analyst, said the hospital was sorely needed. ‘Medium and long-term population growth in the South West Development corridor provides significant opportunities. “For the private sector, this includes development of a locallybased large private hospital and day surgeries as well as the

opportunity to assist the public sector to meet the significant increase in public hospital demand.” The broader precinct in which the hospital will sit will become a go-to destination for Sydney’s south-west. The hospital will be surrounded by quality dining and entertainment options, amidst landscaped, pedestrian and cycle-friendly riverside boulevards. The Camden Medical Campus, SOMA health hub, and the accompanying retail, lifestyle, and hospitality outlets are projected to create 2,000 jobs, potentially making the hub the biggest employment precinct in the South West Growth area.

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@ newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park

Kids on Holidays Looking back at my childhood it seems that holidays, those bits in-between what you do all the time, are the things that we remember most. Sure the change of routine helps that, but they’re often full of adventures and new experiences, maybe even new places. Some holidays we drove out of the city and camped. Some holidays we spent at home. It’s that second type of holiday that I thought I’d write about this month. You see home holidays can be great, building forts out of couch cushions, cubby houses out of blankets, or maybe cricket games in the backyard - back when backyards were the right size for such sporting endeavours! Increasingly though, our kids can find themselves plonked in front of the TV bingeing on Netflix or steadily working their way through the latest PS4 adventure. Some will be in long day care, some out with grandparents, and pretty soon the holidays have their own slightly different monotony. At NewLife we run a one day Kids Holiday Camp to help kids and parents who haven’t departed Oran Park to have a great day that’s different from the usual routine, that will be memorable and, best of all, heaps of fun. The camp will run all day on July 7th and cater for kids from ages 5-12 years or school years Kindy to Year 6. Kids are invited to join us for a day that will be filled with craft, singing, games, teaching about Jesus, and meeting new friends. On the day, rego will begin at 8:30am and we'll finish around 4:30pm with a BBQ and a jumping castle for those who can stay. Prices start at $32 a child and there are discounts for families. Last year we had well over 100 children join us for the day so it’s no exaggeration to say that places are limited and your best way to ensure your child and their friend can come is to book early via the link on the Church website listed above. So don’t have a boring holiday - enjoy a day to remember with us. Yours in Christ, Stuart.

Oran Park Anglican College played host to the Oran Park Festival last month, with the annual event once again hugely successful for the local community. The popular event drew a large number of attendees, with approximately 4,500 visitors from the local community and beyond. It continues to grow each year and has become one of the largest festivals in Sydney’s south west. The day’s celebrations included a great variety of international food stalls, carnival rides, helicopter joy flights, children’s activities and workshops, pony rides, a petting farm, live music, market stalls, silent auction and the renowned Motor Show. This year saw 70 Motor Show cars grace the festival, with many families admiring the impressive display of horsepower on show. “The College and our Parents and Friends Association were proud to host the Oran Park Festival. The weather was beautiful, the day was well attended and the helicopter didn’t stop!” said Steve Moynan, Senior School Co-Ordinator.

Gregory Hills Next Gen Rotary Club

Rotary International is very excited to see the establishment of the Gregory Hills Next Gen Rotary Club, with its membership to reflect the diversity of the community of Gregory Hills and surrounding suburbs. The plan for this club will not be a traditional Rotary Club, it will recognise the busy life style people live and work in, by accessing the use of digital tools they have at their fingertips, while still communicating face to face fortnightly or monthly. They are looking for people who work or have worked in a professional, trade, executive, managerial or community position and may have demonstrated a commitment to service through personal involvement and live or work within the vicinity of Gregory Hills or surrounding suburbs. As a group, members will have the opportunity to engage, develop plans and produce projects with deliverable outcomes, be involved in the community, mentor and be mentored by the extended membership of Rotary, share and exchange ideas,

meet like-minded people, meet other local business people, network and help make the community and the world a better place. To help establish the new club, there will be a small community project ready for the club members to commence with, but they expect within a short time the new club will develop its own activities based on their community involvement and knowledge. “Communities benefit from a Rotary Club because its members are part of the community and respond to the community’s needs and its further development. Rotary’s work in vocational, youth and health is well known. Local communities are aware of the local projects it would like Gregory Hills Next Gen Rotary to undertake, and once established, they will process these projects in an orderly manner” said Anita Robinson, Macarthur Sunrise Rotary member. The Club will be meeting at Gledswood Hills Country Club (West’s), Hermitage Way in Gledswood Hills on Wednesday 14th June, from 6pm to 7pm. The cost is free. For more information, contact Anita Robinson on 0417 457055 or by email anitagrobinson@outlook.com.  Macarthur District Rotarians | Image Supplied

Brand New Day Winter Appeal

How is Life in Oran Park?

May 1st – July 31st, 2017

The University of Sydney’s School of Architecture, Design and Planning are currently undertaking a research project in Oran Park. The research is led by Dr Jennifer Kent, an urban planner whose research interests lie in healthy cities and her work has previously been used to inform planning in Sydney. Oran Park represents a community that has been designed to promote well-being, and potentially offers a template for the development of other communities or neighbourhoods in Sydney. The University of Sydney is investigating the links between health, wellbeing and living in the suburbs, and are calling on residents of Oran Park over the age of 18 years old to give their feedback via an online survey. The survey can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/oranpark2017 The survey explores the way residents travel and how they feel about their new neighbourhood. It will take around 15 minutes to complete. In appreciation of the time taken and feedback, all respondents will be entered into a draw for a chance to win one of five $100 Woolworths gift vouchers, organised by The University of Sydney. The survey is strictly confidential.  The community of Oran Park | Image: The University of Sydney

Driver Injured After Truck Rolls At Narellan Inquiries are continuing after a truck driver sustained minor injuries when his prime mover rolled over while travelling through Narellan last month. About 1.30pm (Friday 5 May 2017), a truck and dog came through the intersection of Camden Valley Way and Richardson Road As the truck was turning right onto Camden Valley Way, the driver has lost control causing the vehicle to clip the kerb. The prime mover rolled and landed on its side in the driveway of a service station The driver sustained minor injuries and was able to remove himself from the wreckage. The driver underwent a roadside breath test at the scene and this returned a negative result. Police are urging anyone with information on the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/ Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. Camden Community Encouraged To Recognise Their Volunteers Member for Camden Chris Patterson is encouraging local residents to acknowledge the efforts of community members who give their time to help others, by nominating them for the Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program.

10

June 2017

www.oranparkgazette.com.au

Nominations for the program were opened last month at Parliament House by the Minister responsible for volunteering, Ray Williams MP. Mr Patterson said the contributions of volunteers to our community cannot be overstated. “Day in and day out, local residents from school students to grandparents are tirelessly working to strengthen the fabric of our community by lending a hand to those who need it,” Mr Patterson said. “I encourage residents to recognise a local who gives their time to help others by nominating them for the Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program.” Categories for the program include student volunteers, people who have made a significant volunteering effort, retired volunteers, people with more than 25 years of volunteering experience and people who have been volunteers for more than 40 years. Minister Williams said the program acknowledges the efforts of everyday citizens throughout the state. “People who volunteer are happier, healthier and more connected to their communities,” he said. Over 2.1 million people volunteer in NSW, contributing 240 million hours of their time, and adding an estimated $5 billion of value each year. The Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program celebrates the importance of volunteering and has recognised the hard work of more than 14,000 volunteers across NSW. To nominate a volunteer for the Premier’s Volunteer Recognition Program or for more information about volunteering in NSW please visit www.volunteering.nsw.gov.au.

Macarthur’s Wizarding Sports Club

You might be surprised to learn that the sport that they play in Harry Potter, quidditch, is actually a real sport. If that’s not enough, the local community even have their very own team, the Macarthur Weasleys Quidditch Club. The Macarthur Weasleys Quidditch Club started from scratch in 2013, with just two members. In 2014, the Weasleys began participating in the New South Wales State Tournaments, then in 2016 in the Nationals in Canberra for the first time. The Club now proudly boasts 25 members participating in the 2017 State season. For those that may not be Harry Potter fans, these are the rules of quidditch. The aim is to score goals by throwing a ball through a set of hoops, catching the snitch, avoid getting tackled by the other team, and hitting your opponents with dodgeballs. It involves elements of rugby league, basketball and dodgeball. All this is done with a broom between your legs. On each team, there are 3 chasers who are trying to score a 10-point goal with the quaffle (a volleyball). Then there are 2 beaters who are trying to hit the other teams' players with the

bludgers (dodgeballs). There is 1 keeper who defends the hoops. There is also a golden snitch, which is in a velcro sock attached to a runner's shorts. The seeker that catches the snitch gets 30 points for their team, the game ends, and whichever team has the most total point’s wins. “The best part about being involved in the sport is definitely the community. It is a mixed gender sport and encourages everyone, especially women and the LGBTI community, to participate. And naturally as the sport has its roots in Harry Potter, it attracts a wider variety of people who might not normally be interested in playing sport. This makes for a very inclusive and welcoming community environment” said Arfy Papadam, Club Co-Founder. The sport itself has a number of elements which keep it interesting and varied. Each of the different positions on the field (chaser, beater, keeper, and seeker) play very unique and important roles, and depend on good teamwork and communication. “Some of our players have been in sport all their lives and insist that quidditch is the best sport they've ever played” replied Arfy. As it is still relatively new, there are also big opportunities for players to represent their state and country. Last year, the National Australian Quidditch Team, known as the Dropbears , won the 2016 Quidditch World Cup held in Germany, winning against Team USA who had never been defeated since they established the sport in 2005. For more information about the Macarthur Weasleys Quidditch Club, visit their website (www.macarthurquidditch. wordpress.com/), Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ MacarthurQuidditch) or email (macarthurquidditch@gmail. com).  Fight for the snitch| Image: Courtney Buckley

Arthritis In Your Pets Winter is on its way! For many Australians living with arthritis this brings with it the aches and pains associated with the colder weather. What many people are not aware of is that pets can suffer from arthritis too. Arthritis is a joint disease that can affect any age, breed, sex, or size of dog and cat. Arthritis is most commonly seen in pets that are over the age of seven, overweight, have had previous bone or joint trauma or a history of orthopaedic disease. It can occur in any joint and in one or more joints in the body. The most commonly affected joints, however, include the elbows, hips, knees and shoulders. Generally the signs of early onset of arthritis can be difficult to detect. Understandably many owners put changes to personality or activity down to their pet simply ‘getting old’. However, as a pet owner you are the best person to detect early signs that your dog or cat may be suffering from arthritis As it progresses, arthritis can become very painful. Signs include lameness or stiffness (especially in the mornings), reluctance to go for walks or get up after resting, difficulty climbing stairs or jumping into the car, licking or biting at joints, occasional whimpering or yelping with movement, or changes in personality such as increased irritability or aggression in your pet. Treatment options vary depending on the stage of the disease and can include the use of medications, physical therapy, weight management, prescription diets, surgery and

acupuncture. Owners can also help their pets by providing soft warm bedding, ramps for stairs and cars, and easy to reach food and water. Your veterinarian may recommend a management plan involving many of these treatment options based on your pet’s individual needs. If you think that your pet may be suffering from arthritis, veterinary advice should be sought, as early diagnosis can help with long-term management. Arthritis is a chronic disease but with the correct treatment and home care management pets can lead a normal and happy life.

Flynnko Pty Ltd ABN: 65 601 734 472 trading as:

Welcome to June! This month's publication brings you a whole host of wonderful articles covering schools, hospitals, pets, community and quidditch; and what a delightful story it is about Macarthur's very own team on page 11. Like some of you, we are currently renovating our home. Last month saw us de-clutter at a grand scale and give the nod of approval for work to begin on our first stage of works, Bathroom, Kitchen, and Pool. While I am very excited to be dabbling in a bit of creative design around the home, all I can think of is that we'll be bathing in a portable shower during the bitter cold month of June. Who's idea was this anyway? "Be silly, Be fun, Be different, Be crazy, Be You. Life is too short to be anything else". For now, sit back and warm your toes by the heater and enjoy your Community News.

Belinda
