Oran Park’s Own Motorsports Driver Oran Park’s Tim Brook is fast. In fact, he’s very fast and is proving to be a genuine threat in this year’s Toyota 86 Race Series. The talented driver’s blistering opening round race at Phillip Island in April saw him finish 2nd overall out of 39 whilst breaking his own lap record in his category, not once but twice! The devoted father of one-year old daughter Sophie and husband to Bec began his motorsports career at the age of just 11, racing go karts. He finished second in the NSW State Titles in 2004, before winning the Australian Endurance Championship in 2008. A move to the Formula Vee Class soon followed, with great success, which saw Brook crowned the NSW State Champion in 2013 and then the 2014 Australian Series Champion. A further move into the inaugural season of the Toyota 86 Race Series in 2016 saw the speedster taste success on the podium throughout the year, cont. Pg 12

Michelle’s Love of Writing Gregory Hills resident and author Michelle Montebello published her first novel ‘Interwoven’ in 2017. In just one short year, she released her second book ‘A House of Lies’ and has her third in the Belle series, titled ‘Beneath the Pepper Tree’, due out later in the year. Add to this a new standalone novel set on the old Quarantine Station at North Head she is currently writing, and you have one passionate writer! “I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. As a child it was one of my favourite things to do. I have always loved the idea that you can climb into your imagination and journey someplace else. To come back and write about it is part of the fun” said Michelle. The local mother draws inspiration for her novels through a desire for going back and capturing a moment in time, as well as taking herself away to new destinations. “I love history and I love to travel, so I can always find inspiration in those two things. I often create my plots around a location and an event in time”. Michelle currently writes her books part-time, whilst having a full-time job. Her plans are to one day reverse this, where she would like to take her writing overseas and sign books internationally. The talented author, who takes anywhere from four to eight months to have a book ready for publishing, explained that it’s
all in the planning when putting a book together, “Before sitting down to write your story, take the time to develop your character profiles, outline each of your scenes and chapters and conduct research. A little work upfront can make all the difference later”. For more information about Michelle and her amazing books, visit her website www.michellemontebello.com.au. Macarthur Lions Club Inc.
Macarthur Lions Club Inc. (MLC), also known as the “Golden Club” was established in 1981. They are a group of volunteers under the global “Lions International” banner within the Macarthur local government area. The Macarthur Lions Club; as is Lions International, is a not for profit organisation that is predominantly managed by a Club Board made up of volunteer members from the local community. The Club operates its events from “The Lion’s Den” located in Ellis Lane, Camden. The club is involved with approximately sixty annual charitable events. Three meetings held monthly by the club; two dinner meetings and one Board meeting. A large workload made simple through Lionism and good organisation. During the charter of the Macarthur Lions Club Inc., the then President Lion Keith Smith stated that "Macarthur Lions Club will be the Golden Club” and that may be the model that national clubs aspire to. The grassroots of the club are, in essence, the volunteers that attend tirelessly events to raise monies to assist those in need or support. For the past 37 years, the club has achieved much and set high
standards. For these standards to continue in the current and future years, membership numbers must increase. In short, the club’s aim is to see highly motivated volunteers “employed” within a stable and well-run Lions Club; producing a cohesive team to assist the community. It is the Club’s ambition to promote and train younger volunteers through the ranks of Lionism. Macarthur Lions takes this responsibility seriously which is evident by the quality of events they engage and the outcomes that are produced. The club’s assets and structure places them in good stead to accomplish their mission and vision statements. Under the guidelines of Lions International; Macarthur Lions has been allocated a great reputation within the Camden and Macarthur area as has a group of surrounding Lions and Lioness clubs. The objectives set by Lions International is for all Lions clubs, to work closely within their allocated zones and associated clubs with a view of developing “Lionism” within the region and uphold the Lion’s identification of charity. Macarthur Lions also takes this responsibility seriously and in doing so, encourages clubs in our zone to embrace these initiatives. My husbands 70th was approaching and I wanted to give him a memory about the day. After much soul searching and being a car interested person since he was seventeen. I came up with a drive in a car. He has always loved Mustangs but they were hard to get. So I saw an ad on the forum for a ferrari driver who did formals and events. Booked it for the day, he came to our house and the look on my husbands face was priceless. He drove him to the restaurant it made his day. Happy 70th and nearly 50yrs marriage. Ways to Wind Down this Winter
Winter has arrived and the chill in the air is not exactly conducive to having relaxing family barbecues and a nice cocktail by the pool as a means to unwind. Apart from hiding under a warm blanket and watching movies all season, what can we do to alleviate stress and pressure this frosty season? Here are five ways to make your winter a winner: 1. Get Cooking What better way to warm up (and fill your tummy) than by baking some cookies, whizzing up some homemade soup or cooking a roast dinner. Not only will you enjoy it, but the family will too! 2. Go For A Drive A nice drive through the countryside or up to the Blue Mountains looking at the gorgeous scenery and stopping at a café or park on the way sounds divine. Put on some of your favourite music and you are good to go. 3. Visit A Relative Or Friend Many people can get seasonal depression and elderly people especially can feel isolated at this time of the year. Book in a visit to Grandma or an old friend and possibly combine this idea with point 1 by taking some baked goods with you to share. 4. Host A Dinner Party Okay so this one requires a bit of effort but it is probably the most rewarding. Invite friends, plan a menu, organise a few bottles of wine and you’re set. Depending on the crowd, you could always plan a few board games for some extra fun. 5. Backyard Bonfire Night Well we know we can’t really have a real bonfire in New South Wales as it is against the law, but we can have a small barbecue firepit and toast some marshmallows in the backyard. Add some sparklers for the kids and some hot chocolate for everyone – sounds like a perfect night in. A dinner party with friends is a great way to relax this winter | Pixabay.com. Street Smart Disciplines Every Business Needs As a mentor and advisor to entrepreneurs and business leaders, I find it easy to recognise “street smarts” when I see them, but it’s not easy to explain the specifics to someone on the other end of the spectrum, even if they are willing to learn. Some people believe that street smarts are innate, but I believe they are skills that can be taught and learned. It’s about anticipating events, becoming agile and adaptive and building the resilience required to navigate a changing landscape. Here’s four quick tips to help you become street smart: 1. Work smart. Maintain a change-oriented and futurefocused mentality, with an actionable execution plan. 2. Deal with people. People do business with people not brands. They do business with people they know, like and trust. Put people as ‘the air you breathe in everything you do’. 3. Watch your money. It’s not unusual to get caught up investing money in something you thought was a great
idea only to keep sending good money after bad. I see this all the time, especially when it comes to marketing expenditure or products that have reached end of life. In reality, money is the critical side of business and requires a relentless focus. 4. Everybody sells. It may not be their ‘job’ but the very first moment a customer has contact with your team, they experience your brand and a perception is created. Their perception is your reality, and you only get one chance to make it a good one. Overall, being street smart means balancing your idealistic vision of how things should be, against the realities of the business world and being able to effectively navigate the changing landscape. The alternative is a long and painful learning curve, which you can’t afford. Join me on social where I’m happy to field questions to help the Gazette business community

Holiday Fun for Kids @ NewLife I always remember my school holidays as being a great break from the routine of school. Many families will go away to change the scene at this middle point in the year though for others that simply isn’t possible due to family or work commitments. For those who are staying around Oran Park in the coming holidays NewLife is offering a full day camp on Friday July 13th for kids from prep to year 6. We’ve done this for the last 5 years or so and with roughly 100 kids on the Church site on the day it’s been a blast each and every time. Tickets will cost $33 per child for a full day program from 8:45am-4:30pm (with family discounts available for those with multiple children). This price will include all craft materials, morning and afternoon tea, as well as lunch. This year our theme will be built around the colour and international flavour

If this sounds like something that your kids and their friends would like to be a part of please get in touch with us via our website www.newlifeanglican.org.au and follow the links through from the front page to learn more and book your tickets. Before July comes around you can find our regular NewLifeKids program runs each and every Sunday for kids for the same ages as our camp. With our new service times in place that means you can choose between 8:45am and 10:30am depending on what fits your family best. I hope we see you soon - be it on a Sunday during school term time, or in the holidays in July for our Big Epic Kids Fun Day.
PET CHAT
Article Written + Submitted by: Anna Gonzalez | Final Year Veterinary Student | University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden | A: 410 Werombi Road, Camden | NSW | 2570 P: 4655 0777 Cats Rule The Household
So when your cat states that he or she only prefers wet food – that tends to be what the cat gets. But, why is it that your cat prefers to eat wet food over dry? Feline gingivitis is a commonly missed condition that can cause severe discomfort and pain to your cat. Signs of gingivitis in your cat include: • Red or swollen gums • Bad breath • Plaque and calculus on the tooth. Some degree of gingivitis as your cat loses its baby teeth and grows out adult teeth is normal – however persistent gingivitis may be indicative of a more serious underlying problem.
Either way, prevention is the best cure. Good oral hygiene practices for your cat include water additives, dental chews, feeding dry food instead of wet food and yes – even brushing your cats’ teeth! If you think your cat is suffering from gingivitis, don’t hesitate to call the clinic to make an appointment for your feline friend. Pet Dental Health Month, Healthy Set, Happy Pet August is the AVA Pet Dental Health Month and this year's theme is Healthy set, happy pet. Providing your pet with good oral care is essential for them to enjoy a healthy and happy life. An initiative of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), the aim of the campaign titled – Healthy set, happy pet - is to educate pet owners about the benefits of annual dental health checks and the importance of a thorough dental examination to help prevent gum disease. “Pets often won’t show pain. Even pets with sore gums, infected mouths and broken teeth will continue to eat so owners may not see any problems,â€? he/she said. So, how can you tell if your dog or cat is in the early stages of dental disease? “Your pet’s breath should not smell bad. Bad breath is a sign of infection. Gums may be red and inflamed and the teeth stained with tartar or they may start dropping food. Information is also available on the AVA website at www.ava. com.au/dental-month and in future editions of the Oran Park Gazette. ď ˛ď€ Feline Gingivitisď€ | Image Supplied

Gledswood Toastmasters, part of Toastmasters International, is in the process of starting at the Country Club Gledswood Hills, 91 The Hermitage Way in Gledswood Hills on 1st, 3rd and 5th Monday nights at 7.30pm. Toastmasters International is an internationally recognised Communication and Leadership educational organisation that has been in operation since 1924. It opened in Australia in 1958. Since 1924, millions of people have experienced a growth in general confidence, improved their public speaking skills and become better leaders due to the Toastmasters Educational Programme. The Educational programme has recently been enhanced to cater for needs and demands of communication and leadership in the 21st Century. Pathways, as it’s very name suggests, consists of multiple paths which each Toastmaster can select to pursue a path that suits them. Education is always better when it is fun and that’s what happens at a Toastmasters meeting. At each meeting, members are given the opportunity to present prepared speeches, partake in impromptu speaking, take on meeting roles etc. Participation at the meetings helps people improve their general confidence, enhance their public speaking skills, learn to control their nerves, enhance their leadership skills, enhance their interview skills, improve their listening skills and improve their evaluation skills. Oran Park’s Own Motorsports Driver finishing 4th in the series. Despite finishing 10th in the series last season, Brook was still able to claim four top five finishes. “As a kid growing up, I spent quite a lot of time in Oran Park racing in both go karts and later in Formula Vee’s. Living here in the local community now is great” said Brook. “Some of my mates even blame me for the track not being here anymore” he joked. Support is everything for Tim in his motorsport career and this is something that helps drive him towards his ultimate goal this year, which is to win a Championship in the Toyota 86 Race Series. “Having a great team and support behind me makes a world of difference. Everything from my sponsors, family and friends, I appreciate it all. It’s why I race” Tim explained to the Oran Park Gazette. He hopes to help raise the profile of the sport locally, with promotions planned to feature his race car, dubbed ‘Black Betty’. The car debuted at the Camden Show and has been popular with fans. If you’d like to show your support for Tim, visit his website www.tbmotorsport.com.au for more information.

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Well Winter has arrived. Time to pull out your winter woollies, rug up and keep warm as the aroma of fresh home-made soup wafts through the home. On page 4, you will find one of my winter go-to recipes. I've already made this a handful of times this year, such a simple yet hearty winter warmer. Sadly, we farewelled my Mum last month. It was the single hardest thing I have ever had to face in my adult life. I live on knowing she is no longer suffering, and can now breathe easy. "What hurts you today, makes you stronger tomorrow." Miss you Mum xxx Enjoy your Community News.
