Orienteering – A Sport for the Whole Family For many of us, orienteering is a sport that we have tried, particularly when we were at school. The adrenaline rush of navigating a map whilst competing against another team for time never leaves you. Did you know that we have an orienteering club right here in the Macarthur? Southern Highlands Occasional Orienteers (SHOO) formed in August 1986 and have been running events around the area ever since. As a Club, they’re seeing a lot of growth now, with lots of people moving to the area and lots of interesting places to do orienteering like schools and natural bushland. They currently have approximately 70 members. A day of orienteering mainly involves getting you straight into the event! You turn up to the location, register for the event, and get handed a map. Your job is to find all the points on the map (they have a few different formats, like 'line' and 'scatter' courses) and get back as quickly as possible. Depending how long you have, you can run more than one course on the day as well. They run quick events close to home, like their current SOS series in local schools, however they also run more full-day traditional bush events with hard core navigation in beautiful, wild areas. The local maps tend to take a lot less time, while for their bush events, you can be out navigating for up to 2 hours. Once you're through your courses, everyone generally has a chat about who did what parts well, what problems they had, and laugh at each other's mistakes. “I love helping people to live life a little bit more adventurously. Navigation is a superuseful skill, a bit like seeing people making mistakes and learning, particularly out in our beautiful bushland and it is just really rewarding. You see families heading out together, a bit tentative, and then they come sprinting back into the finish, covered in dirt and mud and leaves, laughing together and feeling a sense of achievement - that's just the best. Our lives can be so clean and controlled and orienteering just lets you loosen all of that up in such good ways. I'm also competitive, and like the racing component at some of the more serious events” explained Dean Williamson from Southern Highlands Occasional Orienteers (SHOO). From March to September, they run a Forest Series of traditional bush orienteering events across Macarthur and the Southern Highlands. Each of them has coaching and courses that are suitable for newcomers. For more information, you can join their mailing list by emailing shoo@bigpond.net.au. You can also visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/shoo.orienteering or their website at www.shoo.org.au. Come and make a fun, family day of it! U

Wildfire Lighting It Up

The Camden Valley Wildfire are living up to their name, lighting up the basketball court and proving to be one of the strongest clubs in South Western Sydney. This year, Wildfire has over 800 members in both junior and senior players in domestic competition. Out of this, there are 3 junior development squads that play in regional leagues and tournaments, 10 junior teams competing in the BNSW metro league championships and 2 senior teams that are part of the Waratah League which is the Mens Under 22 ‘youth league’ and Women’s Division 1 team. With all their teams doing well this season and improving development squads, Wildfire is in good shape for the future. Adding to this, Camden Valley Wildfire had their first ever national athlete in Jack McWilliams being chosen to represent Australia in the Under 15 FIBA Oceania tournament held in late 2018. “This year, we are looking forward to success both on and off the court for all our athletes, coaches and supporters. Seeing Wildfire grow, not only in players but in families that make up the fabric of this great sporting association. With our local competitions flourishing, it gives everyone the opportunity to play the game and for our athletes to improve and compete at higher levels in our representative program” explained Wildfire’s Mathew McKenna. For more information, contact Wildfire General Manager Mathew McKenna on 0401 503684 regarding their competition schedules, as well as school and holiday camps that are held all year round. The Travelling Four Meet Melissa, Mum and founder of the travelling four. I’m a master at chasing dreams, collecting memories and adventures, and celebrating the privilege of parenthood with my hubby and our two children. At the age of 40, I’ve also discovered I’m a space nerd (talk to me about NASA and space shuttles and I’ll be your friend forever!). We are a local family who are passionate about exploring this incredible world we live in with our children. From our experiences of travelling as a family over the last 8 years, we’ve discovered how travel expands the hearts and minds of our kids. We’ve also become masters at creating affordable travel plans for our family – the more affordable we can make a holiday, the quicker we can plan the next adventure! It’s my passion to share our adventures (and misadventures) with others– inspiring families and showing them how they can have the same experiences with their children as we’ve had with ours. Are you ready for adventure, laughter and collecting memories with those you love most? Look out for us from time to time in your local Gazette, where I will share with you our tips and stories on affordable local adventures, and travel within Australia and overseas. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Recently I came across an online article that caught my attention. It focused on televisions – and how some TVs that are available in Australia don’t need a remote control. Now, if you didn't see this article, you’re probably thinking that a TV without a remote control is “old fashioned”. Far from it. For as the article highlights, the reason these TVs don’t require a remote control is that they will change the channels or volume, solely from the sound of its owner’s voice. You only have to say the name of the channel, and it will change on your command. But what about if you lose your voice? Well they have thought of that too. For you can also change the channel by making the shape of a channel number with your hand. It’s amazing how far technology has come. Today we live in a world where a variety of voices don’t just bombard our TVs, but they bombard us and vie for our attention. We need to ask the question ‘who are the voices we listen to?’ or in other words ‘do we listen to the strongest or loudest voices, or do we listen to the voices of those who offer us a message that leads to life?’ As St. John reminds us in the 10th chapter of his Gospel, for Christians the mark of a true disciple is our capacity to hear and respond to the voice of Jesus the Good Shepherd; a voice that comes to us, not only when we are in a church building, but a voice we are called to hear through the people and events of our daily lives. I hope that whether we own a "voice controlled" TV or not, in the midst of a noisy world “filled with competing voices” we will listen and seek out the voices of those, who like Jesus, offer us the words of life (John 10:10). Kid’s Holiday Fun Is it too early to be talking about holiday fun? Maybe it’s too much of a tease to talk about the break whilst we’re still in the middle of the term but I’d suggest that most of the time our holiday plans are sorted out well and truly before the last few weeks. So with this in mind I thought I’d offer an invitation to the Primary School aged kids of Oran Park. On Friday July 12th NewLife will be holding our 7th annual Big Epic Kids Fun Day. Our one day camp runs from 8:45am to 4:30pm for kids from Prep through to year 6. The cost of $35 covers all the food for the day plus craft supplies. We have around 120 spots and typically these sell out before the day so we’d love you to get in early to avoid disappointment. This year’s creative theme will be Super Mario and kids can dress up as much or as little as they’d like to get into it. So, you’re invited to join us for a day filled with fun, adventure, craft, games, and teaching about Jesus. To find out more and to reserve your space drop by our website www.newlifeanglican.org.au We look forward to seeing a colourful crowd full of energy for a great day of holiday fun.. even if it seems a little way away at the moment!

PET CHAT

Paws in the Park a

Barking Success

Article Written + Submitted by: University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden A: 410 Werombi Road, Camden NSW 2570 | P: 4655 0777 Dogs, like people are living much longer nowadays thanks to advanced healthcare but, as our faithful companions age, they may experience similar cognitive (brain) changes seen in people. A common condition that alters the cognition in senior dogs is called Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CCDS), a condition similar to dementia in people. Dogs with dementia may show signs of disorientation such as walking into objects and not being able to manoeuvre their way around. They may also show changes in their interaction with people or animals. For example, they may show signs of aggression towards people or animals that they were once friends with, or vice versa. CCDS can easily be misinterpreted as part of the normal aging process. Behaviour such as waking up in the middle of the night after having slept throughout the day, changes in the dog's activity level and increased anxiety associated with separation from owners and loud noises are common signs. It is often distressing to witness a cognitive decline, be it in people or pets. If you suspect that your senior dog has dementia, don't hesitate to contact us for a consult. It is important to recognise that this condition cannot be reversed or cured. However, we can work towards the goal of providing good quality of life for our companions by managing the signs such as treating anxiety and slowing down the process of decline with supplements, diets and medicines. U Article: Written by Yvonne Goh - Final Year Veterinary Student, The University of Sydney. Image Supplied

Last month’s Paws in the Park was a barking success, with more than 4,000 people and their furchildren attending the event. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa, Fedeli said there was so much to see, do and learn for all types of dogs – from Great Danes to Miniature Poodles and everything in between – and their owners. “The star of the show was definitely everyone’s favourite celebrity vet, Dr Harry Cooper OAM, who was our special guest Cr Fedeli said. “Dr Harry met with residents and their four-legged friends and was also our guest judge in the competitions on the day. It was great to see and hear attendees learning so much from him and being able to meet someone they loved watching on TV. The event was proudly sponsored by Nestle Purina.

Camden Mother’s Day Classic This year’s Camden Mother’s Day Classic, held at Camden Cycleway and Chellaston Reserve last month, was a great success with approximately $30,000 raised for breast cancer research. With 650 locals coming together to walk and run the 4-kilometre event on Mother’s Day, it was a sea of pink with participants remembering and celebrating those family and friends touched by breast cancer, whilst raising valuable funds. “The day was very popular. The weather was fantastic, and we had some awesome local entertainers, said Thai Tyquin, Event Manager of Camden Mother’s Day Classic. “Breast cancer research is very important. Previous research is already saving lives and helping with early detection. For me personally, it is so that perhaps future sufferers will have less invasive treatment options Thai explained to the Oran Park Gazette. Donations can be made at www.mothersdayclassic.com.au.

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST

There's no doubt we've hit Winter. I know I've said it before, but Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table during the season. Don't miss out on our iFly giveaway on page 7. If you've 'ever dreamed of flying' now's your chance! And you can't go past our delicious winter warmer in 'Whats Cooking' on page 10. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live. Love.Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Don't just be good to others. Be good to yourself too.'
