The ultimate burger lovers’ event is here! OMC Burgers and Bar, formerly Orangeville Meat Company present The Big Mouth Burger Challenge at Gregory Hills on Wednesday 9th June at 7:00pm. Ten competitors will battle it out in a challenge to see who can devour the 2kg beef burger, nicknamed ‘The Impossible Burger’, in under 30 minutes or whoever can eat the most in that amount of time. They each have a jug of water to assist them with this. 2019 Challenge winner and crowd favourite Yuan will be making a welcome return to the event. His start in the competition will be delayed making it a fair and even contest. The burger is made up of beef, tomato, pickles, lettuce, mayonnaise, and American cheese. First prize will walk away with a $100 EFTPOS voucher, trophy, their name on the Wall of Fame, a gift bag of goodies valued at $200 and, of course, bragging rights. All the contestants taking part in the challenge will each receive a gift bag. The Big Mouth Burger Challenge is a COVID SAFE event. Competitor entries have been filled; however, guests are welcome to watch. Bookings are essential to spectate, so don’t miss out. “This will be a good, fun community event. Macarthur FC Plans for a Centre of Excellence The Club has announced it has purchased 42 acres of land in Cawdor. This land will be the site for Elite Development Programs for W-League, NPL, and the club’s community arm – The Macarthur FC Foundation, that runs Multicultural, Indigenous and Disability services programs and will encompass several playing fields with associated facilities, such as club house, sports science and club administration facilities. This announcement further supports the existing Centre of Excellence currently underway at Macarthur Heights in conjunction with Campbelltown Council. “There is a wonderful synergy in the location of the facility as the site was part of a gift of land to the Boardman family by a pioneer of the District, John Macarthur (who the club was named) so the link with the history of the area is strong. I am sure that John Macarthur would be proud of the achievements of our club in the short period we have been in operation. I would like to thank the Boardman family for providing us with this link to the past” said Chairman Gino Marra. “The facility will draw participants from Goulburn to Bankstown and in particular will aim to give young female participants in football a pathway to achieve their performance and participation goals” said Mr Marra. The most significant international sporting event in the 2023 Women’s Football World Cup, which Australia will co-host, will give a significant impetus to participation in our game and we will need to be prepared for that. “This is a major investment into the area on behalf of the club and I am confident that this facility will provide opportunities and experiences for our vast disperse community. Our Club has a strong commitment to those in our community who may not otherwise get a chance to experience involvement in our game. “I am excited about the potential which the centre will have in the development of the game across all levels, and base where the next A-League and W-League stars will be developed in our NPL home” said Sam Krslovic, Macarthur FC Director of Sports and Operations “The investment in infrastructure and development in the Region is also exciting for the Club as the facility will provide new purpose-built facilities and Programs” said Macarthur FC Deputy Chairman Roy Mammone. The Club is looking forward to the development of the site and the establishment of something which is very special thereby giving the community a sense of enhanced belonging in what our club is doing. The Cawdor precinct plans to commence construction subject to council approval prior to commencement of the 2021/22 A-League Season.

Recycling just RecycleSmart
got
easier
with
Recycling has just become easier with Council partnering with RecycleSmart to offer a ‘Recyclopedia’ and an uber-style recycling collection service for residents. RecycleSmart offers residents the chance to recycle their tough-to-recycle items by following these simple following steps: • Download the RecycleSmart app; • Pack your bag; and • Book your Power Pickup. RecycleSmart Chief Executive Officer, Giorgio Baracchi, said using the initiative will make residents look forward to recycling. “We're here to change the way people feel about recycling so they recycle more things, more often,” Mr Baracchi said. “We achieve that by making recycling digital, fun and easy. We're so lucky to be able to work with local councils and to be able to offer our on-demand recycling service to their residents. It is truly the best way to make recycling easy.” Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the collaboration added to Council’s extensive work in diverting waste away from landfill. “Recycling in the correct way is important to help our environment and Council is committed to continuing to help wherever we can,” Cr Fedeli said. “We currently offer our community a weekly three-bin waste collection service and host a number of other events including quarterly Recycling Drop Off events and offering recycling stations at our libraries and administration building. Having RecycleSmart available to our residents is our next step. “Simply download the RecycleSmart app to start diverting your tough-to-recycle items away from landfill.” Camden residents can sign up to RecycleSmart to receive a free Recycling Starter Kit and book a Power Pickup for free using the code FIRSTFREE at recyclesmart.com For more information on RecycleSmart and how it works, go to camden.nsw.gov.au and search ‘RecycleSmart’ r Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli , recycling the correct way is important | Image/Article: Camden Council
Children Decorate Nest Boxes in Harrington Forest Restoration Local children have played their part in restoring Harrington Forest’s Cumberland Plain Woodland after decorating 10 nest boxes to be installed at the site. The children from a variety of local childcare centres and primary schools decorated the nest boxes which are to be installed in Harrington Forest for native bird and mammals to use. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said involving local children was a way to educate them about the importance of tree hollows and how nest boxes can help our native wildlife by providing them with a safe home. “We are very lucky to be living amongst many fantastic environmental hotspots in the Camden area and it is important to protect and enhance them” Cr Fedeli said. “Council has been able to remove weeds to help regenerate native vegetation in the area which is important in keeping the area in good stead for future generations to enjoy. “Our local children have done a remarkable job in decorating the nest boxes and I look forward to seeing them watch native wildlife enjoy their nest boxes”. Council successfully secured funding of $20,000 from the Australian Government’s Communities Environment Program 2019/2020 last year, to restore the forest through woody weed removal. A Nest Box Trail Map will be created which residents can download and enjoy a bushwalk within Harrington Forest to find all 10 decorated nest boxes and become citizen scientists by observing any animals that move into the nest boxes. The Nest Box Trail Map will be available on Council’s website in early June. r A great local project for children | Image/Article: Camden Council

Woolworths Introduces Quiet Hour in Oran Park Woolworths Oran Park now offers a low-sensory Quiet Hour shopping experience designed to reduce anxiety and sensory stress for customers with specific needs. During Quiet Hour, Woolworths Oran Park will lower lights, turn down music or radio and turn off oven buzzers for an hour, every Tuesday between 10:30am and 11:30am. Following a successful trial in select stores, Quiet Hour will now be rolled out nationally. To date, there are already more than 264 stores nationwide which are already offering this initiative. Woolworths Oran Park Manager, Danny McGinley said: “Our customers have told us there’s a need in the community for a low-sensory shopping experience in the area, so we’re pleased to expand Quiet Hour to Oran Park. “Our team takes great pride in ensuring the store is quieter and less stressful for customers who want to shop during Quiet Hour, and we look forward to welcoming them in store”. The low sensory initiative was developed in consultation with disability service providers at Life Without Barriers. Life Without Barriers Chief Executive Claire Robbs said: “Quiet Hour is a fantastic initiative by Woolworths that recognises the different needs of some customers. “It gives people a way to do their shopping and increase their independence in an environment that is not stressful and overwhelming to them”. Quiet Hour runs from 10:30am - 11:30am every Tuesday. During this hour, temporary changes are made to the store, including: • Turning off bakery ovens or chicken cooker buzzers • Reducing volume on store phones and registers on the trading floor • Clearing store entry ways • Reducing lighting and in store music • Removing roll cages from the shop floor and; • Stopping all PA announcements (excluding cases of emergencies)

There is no Excuse for Violence
Last month, I wrote about domestic and family violence. It is a hot topic at the moment, and rightly so. Domestic and family violence causes so much disruption to people’s lives and has ripple effects for children, women, and men. 1 in 4 families are affected by DFV, and that’s probably a conservative number because so much of it goes unreported. 1 woman on average is killed each week by her partner or ex-partner. Have you been watching See What You Made Me Do on SBS? If not, check out this 3 part documentary on SBS Demand. But watch and listen carefully in the second episode how one man minimises his violence and blames the woman. ‘If she didn’t nag me I wouldn’t have snapped and tried to strangle her.’ What? That one slipped past the editing crew. Since when did someone’s words justify you trying to kill him/her? Have you also seen the television ads ‘Unmute Yourself’ (https://youtu.be/9g4-puN2K9o)? They are brilliant. A boy is seen being aggressive to a girl, and one parent says ‘he probably just likes her’, and the other parent reflects ‘no, there is no excuse, we have to stop him’. A fella on the sidelines at the footy tells a young male player ‘stop playing like a girl’ and an older man says ‘what’s wrong with playing like a girl?’. And finally I come to my point of this article. There is no excuse for violence of words or actions. What we teach our little boys is how they will grow up. Don’t give them a sense of entitlement, that just because they are boys they can do as they please. If they grow up rough they will be rough men, and it might be your daughter or daughter-in-law that they will be treating rough. Don’t blame the victim, ‘if she didn’t do this, he wouldn’t do that’. Teach your children that they can’t control anybody else but themselves and they alone are responsible for their thoughts, words, and actions. I have had the opportunity and honour to observe a Men’s Behaviour Change group recently. There are a few organisations around (BaptistCare, Relationships Australia) that offer individual counselling and groupwork for men who use coercion, control, and violence with their partners and in their families. These programs are supportive and gentle, but they do challenge the men to take responsibility for their own behaviour. What I have learnt from the men in the groups is don’t grow your boys up rough. Acknowledge that they have feelings, and allow them to express their feelings. Grow them up as humans, regardless of gender. We all have the power to end violence. r

Talented artist Emmanuel Asante has just completed a series of workshops with young art enthusiasts to be used for a public project that will be installed throughout Camden and Oran Park. The workshops, which took place at Alan Baker Art Gallery in Camden last month, were designed for 12–25-year old’s wanting to express themselves through art. They were guided by Emmanuel, who has been an artist himself for six years, since arriving in Australia from Ghana. “When I first came to Australia, most of the people that I had met were nice to me and aided me when I needed help. I decided to become an artist to draw or paint them a portrait as a way of showing my gratitude” explained Emmanuel. Asante’s art practice critically examines and reflects his identity as a young Ghanaian migrant to Australia, incorporating traditional African metaphors and cultural symbols to evoke visual-aesthetic experiences and modes of storytelling. His artworks employ diverse media including pen, pencil, watercolour, acrylic and African fabric. These materials, particularly the use of fabric, plays on the signifiers of African culture and fashion, which circles back to the theme of identity in his work. Inspired by all who attended the workshops, Emmanuel said that anyone can become an artist. “It all starts with practice, practice and practice. Continue to draw every day, even if it is a simple sketch or doodle. If you do not like the artwork, keep record of it so that you can see how you progress over time. Always remember you are not too young, and you are not too old to become an artist. Becoming an artist is for all ages” he smiled.

It’s All Rock & Roll for Ethan
At just 13 years of age, Harrington Park student Ethan Kapitanow is well on his way of one day becoming a professional musician. The young guitarist recently played live at Camden Shorts and is working hard to follow his dreams. Ethan, who plays electric, acoustic and bass guitar, first picked up a guitar 4 ½ years ago and has never looked back since. “My parents took me to a shop to buy my first guitar and that’s where I met David who helped me pick one to start on. For a month after, I kept asking them for lessons with David because I liked how he spent the time with me in the shop to learn a couple of notes. Since then, I have learnt so much about music from him and the teachers at Macarthur Music Academy” said Ethan to the Oran Park Gazette. The dedicated teenager practices playing his guitar every day as well as weekly lessons. “David is very encouraging and always challenges me with new techniques to learn. Sometimes other teachers come into the lesson and we play as a band. Twice a year the academy holds concerts and I get to play my guitar on stage in front of others” Ethan explained. His live music journey began this year, playing at the Cars That Care charity event for YAMHS (Youth Adolescent Mental Health Support) at Luddenham Showground and at Camden Council’s Camden Shorts live performances for young people at the Camden Civic Centre. With the support of his family, Ethan now has his own social media sites where he can play his favourite songs for people online. Ethan’s prized possession is his Gibson Slash Les Paul, which comes as no surprise that Slash, the famed Guns N Roses musician is his favourite guitarist. “Slash inspired me to learn to play guitar using different techniques” he said. “I want to take people away from their busy lives and help them to experience music the way I do, to relax and be happy through listening to the music I play” Ethan finished. Archery: A Sport for One and All
Oran Park Probus Club
Did you know we have our very own archery club right here in the Macarthur? Macarthur Archers formed at the end of 2020 and they currently have 6 members, which are also the committee. They are looking to grow as a local club and it’s time to spread the word. “We are a new up and coming club with big ideas and are still enthusiastically looking for suitable spaces to run our archery sessions. The space we are needing must conform to being large enough to use as a shooting range, but enclosed and/or safe enough that stray arrows cannot damage property or ricochet and hurt people. We take the safety aspects extremely seriously and have looked at dozens of potential spaces so far without success” said Paul Johnson of Macarthur Archers. The club is looking at fundraising options to raise money to purchase archery supplies and compound training bows. This is so that the kids can get a real taste of the sport when they are beginning without needing to buy a bow on day one. “Through financial support, we can build up the club with arrows, targets, backstops, safety panels, netting etc. to make this a safe, fun and feature-rich experience for the members. Our goal is to be able keep the costs as low as possible so that everyone has access to this awesome sport” Paul explained. Archery is a sport that inspires all participants to improve their skills. It doesn't require speed or endurance, can be enjoyed by people of almost any age (over 8 years) or gender and is accessible and inclusive. “At present, there are just not enough of these clubs operating in the greater Sydney area. The more clubs that start up, the easier it will be for people to travel to and get involved with. This will help to catapult the popularity of the sport to the levels of soccer, netball, rugby, and cricket” replied Paul. “Archery gives you the opportunity to participate with the local community, as well as the health aspects and building useful life skills like patience and focus. On top of that, the competition between fellow archers can be a lot of fun” he ended. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/ MacarthurArchers or email macarthurarchers@gmail.com.
Oran Park Probus Club is a social club for retired and semi-retired people within the community. The aim is to promote fun, fellowship and friendship within the club. We have our monthly meetings at Wests Lakeside, Camden, which includes a talk from a guest speaker. Topics are varied. So far this year our speakers have covered “Putting humour to work”, dog psychology and breeding Rottweilers and Freemasonry. After the meeting many of the members stay on to lunch together. With the relaxation of Covid regulations we have been able to resume old activities or start up some new ones. We enjoy Coffee and Chat mornings, pub lunches, fine dining and our craft and walking groups are a lot of fun. We will be forming a Trivia team to compete locally and will soon be enjoying a Barefoot bowling event. Our twice postponed car rally, (first Covid then the floods), will take place at the end of the month rain or shine! If you’ve never heard about Probus before or would like to learn a bit more about Oran Park Probus Club, we’d love to hear from you and welcome you to join us at a monthly meeting, meet some new people and see if Probus would suit you. Please call the Secretary for more information. Phone: 0410758755 or Email: oranpark@probusclubs.com.au

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish As many of you would be aware, these days many items in our homes are 'voice controlled', and everything from turning on a light, or playing music, or changing the channels or volume of the TV, can be done solely from the sound of a person's voice. For example, you only have to say the name of a TV channel, and it will change on your command. Today we live in a world where a variety of voices don’t just bombard our home appliances but they bombard us and via for our attention. We need to ask the question ‘who are the voices we listen to?’ or in other words ‘do we listen to the strongest or loudest voices, or do we listen to the voices of those who offer us a message that leads to life?’ As St. John reminds us in the 10th chapter of his Gospel, for Christians the mark of a true disciple is our capacity to hear and respond to the voice of Jesus the Good Shepherd; a voice that comes to us, not only when we are in a church building, but a voice we are called to hear through the people and events of our daily lives. I hope that whether we own a "voice controlled" home appliance or not, in the midst of a noisy world “filled with competing voices” we will listen and seek out the voices of those, who like Jesus, offer us the words of life (John 10:10).

First Oran Park Town Apartment Building Selling Strongly Luisa Roccisano was struggling to find land in the South West. Born and bred in the Camden area, Luisa soon thought why not an apartment - less hassle, no upkeep, and an easy lifestyle. The problem was she found it hard to find quality apartments in the South West. Then she came across the Metro Apartments in Oran Park. Luisa moved quickly and scored a wonderful 2 bedder on the 3rd floor with sweeping district views. Local real estate agent Matthew Faint from Arrow Estate Agents felt so strongly about this growth, he based his growing business in the Oran Park Podium and bought in the Metro. “Both my wife, Melanie and I believe Oran Park is growing at a significant rate, we decided to capitalise on this by buying early”. Smart Property Investment website has Camden property growing at a median rate of 13.13% over the last 12 months. This growth factor and the overall current South West Sydney growth trend have been strong influencers in people living and investing in the area. “We’re so proud to be delivering this high-quality apartment building within the Town Centre. The Metro has such a high level of inclusions such as Miele appliances including washing and drying machines, we think this is the best apartment block in South West Sydney. This new residential building adds to the choice, style and diversity of the homes within Oran Park Town and the location provides easy access to a huge range of services and facilities” said Mick Owens, General Manager of Greenfields Development Company, the developers of Oran Park Town. Located within the Town Centre, the Metro is within walking distance to the Podium Shopping Centre, Splash Park, Leisure Centre, the new Tavern as well as 2 aged care sites, commercial buildings, medical facilities and both the Oran Park High School and Primary School. Best of all, it’s right at the doorstep to the future railway station. “The Podium Shopping Centre expansion starts very soon. More than doubling in size, the new shops and services will bring another dimension to Oran Park Town as we get ready for the opening of the new airport” Mr Owens went on to say. Sales in the building have been strong with over 50% sold. Completion is expected later this year or early in the new year. r Luisa Roccisano in the Oran Park Town Sales Office | Image/Article: Greenfields

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Yep! Winter has arrived. It's fresh, the air is crisp and oooh my frozen toes are now snuggled nicely into the handknitted socks my wonderful friend Betty made for me! Last month we saw music concerts back on the agenda, along with a number of other community events. While we enjoy the return of these long awaited festivities, it's not without noticeable differences of our 'new' post-covid life....checking in, social distancing, smaller groups or masks in larger crowds. A number of these initiatives are definitely a step forward for our overall future wellness. Narelle continues on with last month's topic of Domestic Family Violence, because it's too important not to. Find more on this in 'Parents Corner'. My dear Aunty celebrates 83 amazing years filled with memories and heart-warming treasures. As Aunty Bronwyn would say, 'never stop believing in hope because miracles happen every day'. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
