Celebrate Women at International Women’s Day Evening Celebrate the achievements of the women in your world at one of Camden Council’s most inspiring, heart-warming and exciting events, the International Women’s Day Gala. The event will be held on Thursday 11 March, 6-9pm, at Gledswood Homestead and Winery. It promises to be inspiring, motivating and heart-warming, as it aims to celebrate local women’s achievements; raise awareness of women’s equality, reignite the gender parity journey; and raise funds for the incredibly deserving Blue Wren House – Camden’s Women’s Shelter. Walkley Award winning journalist and newsreader, Tracey Spicer will share her story and inspire guests as the Gala’s keynote speaker. There will also be a number of exciting panel members gracing the stage to answer questions from the audience, share their stories and inspire change, including: • Community leader and NSW Police Multicultural Liaison Officer, Rosemary Kariuki-Fyfe, who was recently named 2021 NSW Local Hero of the Year. Rosemary established an inspiring community exchange program between women refugees and migrants from various ethnic backgrounds and Australian country women and is the founder of The African Women’s Dinner Dance; • Western Sydney-based lawyer, poet, director and cofounder of the Bankstown Poetry Slam, Sara Mansour. Sara uses her art and passion for justice to empower others through poetry; and • Chair of Blue Wren House, Scott Taylor. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said it was important to acknowledge the important part women play in life. “I’m proud to be celebrating more than 39,000 women living in the Camden area and their contributions to, not only their loved ones, but to the entire community,” she said. “This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #choosetochallenge and now is the perfect time for the entire community to challenge and call out gender bias and inequity, while celebrating the achievements of so many women. “By taking a stance, we also show commitment to the prevention of domestic and family violence and this is another way to show the importance of women.” Tickets to the Gala Dinner are $90 each, with all proceeds go to Blue Wren House – Camden’s Women’s Shelter. For more information and to buy your tickets, go to www. camdenwomensshelter.org.au/shop/2021-camden-councilinternational-womens-day-gala

Neighbour Day - Connected People Connect Communities
Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with their neighbours. Neighbours matter (whether near, far, or online), and now, more than ever, is the time to make creative connections and to stay connected. Neighbours can help and support each other in times of need, as we have seen during the numerous challenging times over the past year. A neighbour is also no longer necessarily defined by location alone and can be someone in your street, or the wider community, your workplace, or online. Maybe in Australia, or perhaps overseas. Neighbours are those in our geographical and selected communities that show they care and perhaps offer a hand when we need it most. Traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday in March annually, the theme for Neighbour Day 2021 is ‘Every day is neighbour day’. This year, they are encouraging Australians to help break down loneliness in our communities by building meaningful and sustainable social connections with the people around them. People experience loneliness across the age and social spectrum, including young people, people living with their families, and even people surrounded by others in the workplace. For Neighbour Day 2021 they are asking everyone to get creative, reach out, and to encourage social connection. Connected people connect communities. Neighbours connect and provide support to those living next door and to those further away. We have the capacity to build communities beyond our physical locations. This year, they want you to get creative and contribute to building and sustaining the communities we all need. Now is the perfect time to organise your ideas and plan your connection opportunities. If public health advice doesn’t permit traditional gatherings, then they encourage people to get creative and find alternative ways to reach out to your neighbours. Neighbour Day shares 50 #CreativeConnections tips on their website, with more ideas on social media to get your creative neighbourly ideas flowing. Everything you need to help organise your Neighbour Day event is now available on the neighbourday.org website. You can also connect with Neighbour Day via Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to share your neighbourhood stories and creative plans. You can download the Neighbour Day campaign sign from the Neighbour Day website for selfies and post your neighbourly pics on your favourite social media platform. ®

Reach your Fitness Goals for Free in Camden It’s that time of year again – when you realise your New Year’s Resolution to exercise more regularly may be fading – but Camden Council can help! Residents have access to a variety of free exercise equipment and a number of parks across the Camden area to get out and enjoy. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the community could take advantage of local fitness stations right at their doorsteps. “Whatever your age or fitness level, our local parks are a great way to begin your fitness journey” Cr Fedeli said. “From using free fitness stations including outdoor gym equipment to simply walking or running around your local park, exercise is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety while clearing your head. “We are also lucky to be living in an area with great walking tracks including the Miss Llewella Davies Pioneer Walkway in Camden, taking in some breathtaking views of Camden Town Farm. “It is definitely not too late to start your fitness regime and keep active throughout the year”. Camden is home to almost 40 free local outdoor fitness stations, including: • Birriwa Reserve Youth Play Space, Mount Annan; • Dawson-Damer Park, Oran Park; • Cunningham Park, Gregory Hills; • Harrington Park Lake Outdoor Youth Space, Harrington Park, and • Wayne Gardner Oval, Oran Park. For a full list of parks in your local area, go to camden.nsw.gov. au and search ‘Parks and Playgrounds’.

Promising Trans Am Debut for Brook A podium on debut in the National Trans Am Series has left Oran Park’s Tim Brook optimistic for the remainder of the coming season. Backed by Tradiepad and Cosmo Cranes, Brook surged through the field at Symmons Plains in Tasmania on Australia Day to claim third in the final race of the weekend. Reflecting on the event, he viewed it as a solid start to his time in the V8powered category which sees cars produce more than 500bhp. Winner of the Australian Formula Vee title, and Toyota 86 Racing Series crown, Brook’s step into the National Trans Am Series has presented an all-new challenge. It’s one he’s excited to tackle, using his opening weekend of racing as a platform. “Our pace out of the gate at Symmons Plains was really encouraging, especially because it’s a circuit we hadn’t been to before and didn’t have a lot of knowledge of the car” he said. “The cars are very different to what I used to drive, so the more experience I get in it the more time we should find. “There is also a bit of work for us to do just understanding the car and make sure we’re unlocking its full potential”. “If you’d said to me heading into the weekend that a podium was on offer, I’d have taken it. “The Wall Racing guys did a sensational job and put in some seriously long hours to sort the car out, and once they did it was a rocket ship. “It’s a great start to the year, so I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in. There’s more to come, that’s for sure”. r DzwiaHun - Wall Racing Team photo @ Symmons Plains Tasmania. Rosemary is Australia’s Local Hero
Oran Park’s Rosemary Kariuki has been named the 2021 Australia’s Local Hero at the recent Australian of the Year Awards held in Canberra. 60-year-old Rosemary is an advocate for migrant and refugee women. She is the multicultural community liaison officer for the Parramatta Police and specialises in helping migrants who are facing domestic violence, language barriers and financial distress. Fleeing Kenya alone in 1999 to escape family abuse and tribal clashes, her early years in Australia were terribly lonely. Her experience helped Rosemary recognise that isolation is a huge issue for many migrant women. Many aren’t used to going out alone, have no transport and speak little or no English. So, Rosemary devised ways to help women leave their house and meet women in similar circumstances. In partnership with the African Women’s Group, she helped start the African Women’s Dinner Dance. Now in its 14th year, more than 400 women attend the annual event. She also started the African Village Market - a program to help migrants and refugees start their own businesses – which ran for four years. Rosemary’s warmth, courage and kindness inspire all who meet her. Her work was the subject of the documentary ‘Rosemary’s Way’. Chair of the National Australia Day Council, Danielle Roche OAM, congratulated the 2021 Australian of the Year Award recipients. “Grace, Miriam-Rose, Isobel and Rosemary are all committed to changing attitudes in our society and changing lives” Ms Roche said. “They are strong, determined women who are dedicated to breaking down barriers and advocating for people’s rights – particularly the rights of women and children. “They epitomise the Australian values of respect, tolerance, equality of opportunity and compassion. Because of them, others get a fair go”. r Feature Article: [Above] Rosemary Kariuki [Cover] Rosemary receives her award from Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison | Images/Article: Australian of the Year Awards

PARENTS CORNER

When Quirky becomes Different
Do you have a child who is different? A quirky kid? He or she does things differently to other children? When does ‘quirky’ stop being an expression of the individual and an indication that some intervention is required? Those who could, would. So if children in general are able to draw at the age of four then your four year-old child should be able to draw, even if she isn’t that keen on it. If your 6 yearold child isn’t making friends when other 6 year-olds have fit in nicely and found a group of children he can relate to, then your child is experiencing some limitations in his social and emotional development. The labels don’t help – lazy, stubborn, aggressive, naughty, bad, stupid, a typical boy/girl, etc, – they get in the way of finding out what is really happening for your child. Is it a medical problem? A physical problem? A neurodevelopmental problem? I can’t tell you the number of times a parent has spoken in a parenting group about his/her child’s difficulties and the other parents have jumped in with solutions based on what they think the diagnosis could be. Or a well-meaning relative or friend has told a parent that she thinks her child has autism because she knows someone who has autism and they have tantrums just like that. Chances are your mother-in-law, friend, neighbour, or local shopkeeper is not qualified to make that call. NOTHING beats an assessment by a qualified professional. Start with a trip to your GP and keep asking questions until you are satisfied that your child is getting what they need. Quirky is absolutely fine, but if your child is limited in one or more areas of development (fine motor, gross motor, social, emotional, intellectual) it can lead to psychological or mental health problems later in childhood or during adolescence, and it’s often much easier to get help when a child is young rather than when the behaviours have become entrenched later. r

Come and Play Netball @ Narellan Sports Hub The 2021 netball is just around the corner! Preparation for the Camden & District Netball Association (C&DNA) 2021 netball season, to be played at the Narellan Sports Hub, is in full swing with 13 clubs currently taking player registrations. C&DNA have a big year planned, after the disruption to the 2020 season. The season will kick off with a Gala Day on 17th April, followed by Round 1 on 24th April. School holiday netball clinics by Netball Superstars Anne Sargeant and Susan Pettit are booked in, as is the annual charity fundraiser, DV Day that will see the courts turn to purple in support for the Camden and Wollondilly Domestic Violence unit. Representative teams are back at training in preparation for the NSW State Titles and the 3 Metro League teams are preparing hard for their games at Netball Central. Of real significance is the large number of young players who have joined up to start their netball experience in the clubs NET program. NET is a part of the NetSetGo program that teaches children the basic skills of netball. Net is aimed at boys and girls aged 5 -7 years and is all about teaching the skills of netball in sessions specifically designed for this young age group. The program promotes a healthy, active lifestyle and helps children develop important social skills, like teamwork. Netballers who want to be involved this year can still register by contacting any of the clubs associated with Camden & District Netball Association. Club details can be found online at: www.camdennetball.com.au or find them on Facebook @ camden.netball.

Thousands of Students to Benefit from Out Of School Hours Care Places
Forty seven schools across NSW will open Out of School Hours Care Hubs by June as part of the NSW Government’s Before and After School Care election commitment. Premier Gladys Berejiklian opened a new hub last month at Camden Public School and said that more than $20 million Out of School Hours Care Hub Program will benefit families across NSW. “The new hubs are an innovative way of providing additional before and after school care for more than 2,400 students across the state,” Ms Berejiklian said. “We know families are concerned about the cost of living following the pandemic, and I want to ensure affordable and convenient before and after school care is available to everyone who needs it and at a location that is convenient.” Since July 2019, the NSW Government has created more than 11,000 after school care places and these new hubs will add to this capacity. The Out of School Hours Care Hub Program, which will deliver modular buildings custom-designed for Out of

School Hours Care services, will cut waiting times and allow more families to access before and after school care services. Rental subsidy of the hubs will ensure affordable care is available. Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said she was delighted to be launching the vital program that would benefit so many families in NSW. “The NSW Government is committed to looking after families, and part of that is providing the infrastructure to expand Out of School Hours Care services,” Ms Mitchell said. “This initiative supports NSW families – it will allow more students to have safe, fun environments before and after school and during vacation periods, and for their parents to have the flexibility to participate in the workforce.” The new Out of School Hours Care Hub Program aims to fill gaps in access to services across the state, particularly in regional areas, as well as to clear waiting lists in areas of high demand. Each Out of School Hours Care hub will have facilities for student activities as well as administration and storage areas. The Out of School Hours Care Hub Program is part of the $120 million investment over four years to expand access to Out of School Hours Care for public primary school children. The after school care hubs initiative is on top of the NSW Government’s record $7 billion school infrastructure program to deliver more than 200 new and upgraded schools to support communities. KID’S CORNER Movement March
Oran Park Scouts in High Demand Scouts, the world’s leading youth development movement, has been experiencing huge growth in the Oran Park region due to the call from parents wanting to get their youth out from behind the screens and into the great outdoors. “We have opened a Joeys section 5-8, a Cubs section 8-11 and a Scouts section 11- 14. There is a lot of excitement about this group in Oran Park. We are continuing to get more enquiries every day for people wanting to join” said David Miller, Scouts Australia NSW Regional Development Officer for Hume Region to the Oran Park Gazette. Parents that are anxious to get their kids out from behind their screens are discovering the benefits their children can get from joining Scouts, such as being more resilient and less likely to suffer from mental illnesses. It has also led to improvements in learning at school. The youth get to participate in a wide variety of activities including camping, hiking, canoeing, abseiling, scuba diving, sailing and even flying. They also get to learn a wide variety of life skills such as responsible bush care, leadership, and resilience. There are even benefits through the Scout learning program that the youth participate in that can increase their ATAR at selected local Universities. For more information, contact Hume Region Scouts on 02 4628 4994 or by email at hume.region@nsw. scouts.com.au. Oran Park Probus Club
Probus Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand aim to promote fun, fellowship and friendship among retired and semi-retired people within the community. At Oran Park Probus Club, one of our main activities, travelling on day tours or longer trips, has been severely affected by the pandemic. However, we are hoping for improvements this year as we slowly but COVID-safely resume some of our activities. Our monthly meetings have now moved from Zoom to face-to-face meetings and we have a Coffee and Chat booked. Our first craft session at a new venue was a chance to re-engage and chat, all socially distanced of course. The monthly meetings of Oran Park Probus Club are held on the first Tuesday of every month except November, which was changed to avoid clashing with the Melbourne Cup. There is no meeting in January. At the March General Meeting, we will be inducting some new members into the Club and our speaker will provide some fun and entertainment prior to the serious business of the AGM, when a new Management Committee will be elected for the 2021-2022 year. If you are interested in joining a social club in your retirement or would like to know more about Oran Park Probus Club, please come to a meeting as a visitor. The meetings are now held at Wests Lakeside Golf Club with many of the members staying after the meeting to enjoy a sociable lunch. For further information please contact the Secretary: Ph 0410758755 or email: oranpark@probusclubs.com.au. r

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Glasses for the Heart I’m currently reading through the Apostle John’s account of Jesus’s life. As the biography unfolds, we see Jesus heal a blind man on the Sabbath. This was a confusing miracle. On one hand a blind man regaining his sight was incredible, but the Pharisees (Jesus’s religious opponents) saw Jesus breaking a rule they held to be absolute - do no work on the Sabbath. So how could they decide whether Jesus was working for God or the devil? The (formerly) blind man himself declared that Jesus must be from God and was thrown out of the synagogue - no small thing spiritually or socially! Then we see the following exchange: “Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.” Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.” Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.”(John 9:35–38 NIV11) It occurred to me that this exchange helps us with something we often confuse. To believe in Jesus isn’t just a decision of the head - it is a fundamental reorientation of the heart. When we get it right, we see that one who believes is a *worshipper* of Jesus. Therefore, to say that we believe in Jesus must shift our focus from elevating, advancing, and putting ourselves first, to elevating, advancing, and putting Jesus first. This is Christian belief. Today I pray those with eyes that can see will worship anew and that Jesus might mercifully grant sight to those who are currently blind to His goodness and mercy. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Recently I came across a Pastoral Letter from the Catholic Archbishop of Perth, that offers a message that is relevant not just for the people of WA, but for all of us. In this message written following the recent COVID lockdowns in Perth, Archbishop Timothy Costello says: “Isolation and social distancing, important though they are in controlling the spread of the virus, will always run counter to our deepest instincts. “It is not good for the man to be alone” says God in the story of creation in Genesis, “I will make him a helper as his partner”. Reflecting this understanding the poet John Donne famously wrote, “No man is an island, entire of itself”. That we are made for others, and only find our true meaning and purpose in our relationship with others, is absolutely foundational to our Christian understanding of what it is to be human … The challenge, and opportunity, of the present lockdown is precisely this: that it offers us a chance to put into practice this basic truth of our identity. We will be who and what God created us to be when, in the face of suffering, of confusion, and of fear, we look beyond ourselves to the needs of others and do what we can to respond to those needs. “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies” says Jesus, “it remains only a single grain. But if it dies, it produces much fruit” (John 12:24) … We are a people of hope and of trusting faith. We are a people who believe in the power of prayer and in the power of love in action … Let us pray for each other, and for all those in need at this time, with constancy and trusting faith”. FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Here we are into March already, as we wave goodbye to Summer and welcome Autumn. The warmer weather will slowly be replaced with cooler temperatures and the once lush foliage of our gardens and trees will change. As we start to adjust to the new normal, there is some promising news with vaccines for COVID-19 soon to be rolled out in Australia. Many of us have now returned to our offices as zoom meetings are replaced by face-to-face meetings. There is a strong sense of community and positivity everywhere you go as things begin to look up once again for us all. This month we meet some truly amazing people with stories about our local heroes. They are people who go above and beyond the call of duty, enriching our lives and communities. ‘Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show’. Enjoy Your Community News.
