Disability Housing Provider Completes Oran Park Project After securing a $44 million cornerstone investment last year, one of Australia’s most innovative disability housing providers, Casa Capace (casacapace.com. au), has secured a further $20 million in investment and has completed its first multi-dwelling houses, with residents moving in this month. Casa Capace is a registered and certified provider with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It has been incubated by and is part of the DPN Group (dpn.com.au), an award-winning property and financial services enterprise established in 1996, which works with builders to deliver approximately 200 dwellings per year. With six bedrooms across two dwellings, the homes provide both intimacy and community for NDIS participants who wish to live together at fully accessible and high physical support levels in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). Additional options are available for those requiring

robust SDA homes. These homes in Oran Park are the first of 16 dwellings that Casa Capace are rolling out in 2020, with locations including Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Taree, Western Sydney and Wagga Wagga. These will be a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes, accommodating 28 NDIS participants. Casa Capace will construct more than 1500 new homes, across 750 locations Australia-wide in the next five years, with NDIS-participant demand determining locations. The Oran Park project is fully funded by DPN and designed by Aaron Stevens Architects as the pilot for future Casa Capace SDAs. It will house four NDIS participants in one dwelling and two in the other, with the six residents moving in from March, sourced by Casa Capace’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) partner, Northcott. Sam Khalil, DPN Founder and Group Managing Director, said “We’re thrilled that the first group of NDIS participants will be moving into our beautiful, purpose-built houses in Oran Park. This new generation of living environment for people requiring SDA brings a shift from traditional institutional, and quite often not fit for, purpose housing such as aged care facilities and properties requiring significant upgrade”. r Artist’s impression of the interior | Image: Renders supplied by Casa Capace

Celebrate International Women’s Day with Council

Residents are invited to attend the premiere screening of Military Wives at United Cinemas Narellan on Wednesday 12 March, in celebration of International Women’s Day. The movie celebrates a band of misfit women who form a choir on a military base. Unexpected bonds of friendship flourish as music and laughter transforms their lives, while they help each other during combat. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the movie, which is being screened in partnership with Camden-Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee, was the perfect way to celebrate International Women’s Day. “I’m proud to be celebrating more than 39,000 women living in the Camden area and their contribution to, not only their loved ones, but to the entire community,” she said. “This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #EachforEqual, which I think is a terrific message. I encourage the entire community to work towards creating a gender equal world. “We’re also strongly committed to the prevention of domestic and family violence and this is another way to show the importance of women.” Camden-Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee convenor, Tanya Whitehouse OAM, said she was proud to be involved in an event promoting gender equality for women. “I feel really privileged to be able to share International Women’s Day with strong men and women who want to celebrate the strength of women,” Ms Whitehouse said. “I think as a community we should celebrate the versatility of women and strive to all work together so that women and men view themselves as equal.” Tickets are on sale now and cost $15 for recliner or $10 for general seats. Scouts Opening New Group in Oran Park Scouts, the world’s leading youth development movement, has been experiencing huge growth in the Oran Park region. So much so that they are opening a new group in Oran Park in the second term of school this year. “We will be opening Joeys, Cubs and Scouts in the near future. There is a lot of excitement about this group opening up in Oran Park. We are continuing to get more enquiries every day for people wanting to join” said David Miller, Scouts Australia NSW Regional Development Officer for Hume Region to the Oran Park Gazette. Parents that are anxious to get their kids out from behind their screens are discovering the benefits their children can get from joining Scouts, such as being more resilient and less likely to suffer from mental illnesses. It has also led to improvements in learning at school. The youth get to participate in a wide variety of activities including camping, hiking, canoeing, abseiling, scuba diving, sailing and even flying. They also get to learn a wide variety of life skills including responsible bush care, leadership and resilience. There are even benefits through the Scout learning program that the youth participate in that can increase their ATAR at selected local Universities. To cater for the increased demand from their expression of interest meeting, Hume Region Scouts will be opening a new group in Oran Park. Dates and times are yet to be confirmed, however, you can contact them, and they will let you know. For more information, contact Hume Region Scouts on 02 4628 4994 or by email at hume.region@nsw.scouts.com.au. Camden Show…’Still a Country Show’

It’s that time of year again, the award-winning Camden Show is back for 2020 on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th March. From 8:00am till 11:00pm daily, there are two big days of family fun! The birthplace of Australian agriculture, Camden really is country near the city. With its motto of …’Still a Country Show’, it showcases all of the traditional Agricultural Show favourites from the classic baking, handcrafts, artwork and photography competitions in the Historic Show Hall, to the vegetables and cheeses in the produce section and then to the Poultry Pavilion where some of the best examples of birds from the district are on show. The Heritage Lane showcases life in the past with steam machinery and tractors next to examples of today’s tractors and farm implements. The Drovers Camp offers up traditional tea and damper, and if you are interested in our cold-blooded friends, the snake man is always entertaining. Our local schools compete in the scarecrow making competition and the Entertainment Stage is a great way to see up and coming performers show off their talents. The Camden Show Committee has worked hard to put together the kid’s interactive display, where learning and fun go together. As well as this, they have an animal nursery for all and not just the little ones. When mum and dad need to take a weight off, the Camden Style Pavilion showcases some of the best boutique food and wares in the region. If you are still looking for excitement, don’t forget the sideshow alley and incredible rides. Other competitions include the sheepdog trials, utes, sheep, goats, alpacas, beef and dairy cattle, dogs and wood chopping. Show jumping on Friday and horse events both days showcase our many different equine friends - from the gorgeous mini horses to the big clumping draught horses in all their finery. Friday night has one of the best Rodeo programs from Xtreme Bulls. This year, they welcome back the D-Max Utes Precision Driving Team to the main arena on Saturday night along with camp drafting, polocrosse, barrel racing and the Teams Challenge Races on the arena for bragging rights. Saturday night finishes with a big bang thanks to the famous Foti Fireworks display and Pandora Macarthur and Narellan. The Camden Show really is …’Still a Country Show’ with entertainment and something for the whole family to enjoy! For more information and event details, go to www.camdenshow.com.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

Kids Are a Work In Progress A child’s brain develops from the bottom-up. Certain parts of the brain are more active than other parts during a child’s development. They are still developing all of the parts of the brain but there are ‘hot spots’ at certain times in a child’s development. This brain activity has an impact on a child’s behaviour. Some of the things that they find difficult to do or understand, are a result of having a brain that continues to develop right up to the age of 25 years. There are periods of time where your child does not have the capacity for logic, reasoning, and thinking. There are periods of time where they struggle to control their emotions. There are periods of time where they do not have the capacity to understand that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own. And where they think that the universe revolves around them. These times require lots of understanding and patience. You will still set limits and boundaries but you will expect to repeat yourself many times. Many of the things that children do can be explained by research into the brain and child development. If your child is having tantrums, seeking attention, and not thinking things through within the normal age ranges for these behaviours, then in a strange way that’s good because they are developing as they should. All of this is happening while they are learning how to integrate their experiences, making sense of their world and their place in it, and learning language and culture. Kids are a work in progress, which is why parenting is ongoing and ever changing. The whole article is at https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/2013/05/11/a-quick-tour-through-the-inner-workings-ofyour-childs-brain/. It’s on again - the 116th Annual Luddenham Show will be held on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of March at Luddenham Showground. Luddenham Show, known as ‘The Country Show,’ is traditionally the first Show in the lead up to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Many, many months of hard work culminate for some of the best livestock and stage acts in Australia. With these ever-changing times, the Committee of Luddenham A.H & I Society are proud to keep the traditions of the district’s biggest annual event alive and well. Both days are ‘chock-a-block’ filled with entertainment and activities for the young, and the not so young alike. This year, they are helping to support those who have lost everything in the recent bush fires. They will be inviting people attending the Show to place donations in boxes, which will be distributed around the Showground. The money will be forwarded to the Rotary Club of Wallacia - Mulgoa Valley and 100 percent will go to the Rotary Club Bush Fire Appeal for distribution to those in the affected areas. Luddenham A.H & I Society will also be donating 5% of the Show profit to the Rotary Club Bush Fire Appeal. New in 2020 is the Wife Carrying Competition, Hay Bale Rolling and Gumboot Throwing. These three events are sure to be lots of fun to participate in and to watch. It’s showtime and all roads lead to “The Country Show”, that is the Luddenham Show! DESIGN AND PRINTING

WHY CHOOSE US?  WE COME TO YOU  FULL IN-HOUSE SERVICE FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN AND PRINTING  FAST TURNAROUND TIME

Our very own Gazette Cadet, 10-year-old Kobhi Sanders, has just returned from assignment after spending some time in the new Vintage 88 FM Studios with one of the region’s most experienced DJ’s, Wayne Willmington. Vintage FM, which broadcasts as Vintage 88 FM in Western Sydney and 88.7 in Camden, is a local radio station that plays ‘the music that you grew up with’, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Wayne, also known as DJ Willmo, was hosting the drive timeslot of 3:00pm till 6:00pm and Cadet Kobhi was on hand to see just what it takes to host a radio show. “It was really good. I got to see how Wayne records a radio show and it was a lot different to what I thought it would be. Plus, I got to talk on the radio and help with the weather forecast. The music was very cool too” said an excited Kobhi. “I enjoyed having Kobhi in the studio. He was a great little helper on the show” commented Wayne. Willmington’s career in radio has been an amazing journey that began back in school, when he started a radio station broadcasting over the PA system as a student at high school! He was a founding member of Penrith Community Radio. He also volunteered at Campbelltown Community Radio (2CT) for many years, including presenting the weekly outside broadcast from Centre Court at Macarthur Square. Wayne started Vintage FM in January 2009 and is launching another new FM station very soon. So, now that Kobhi has spent some time spinning the vinyl with one of the radio industry’s best, does he see himself as a DJ in the future? “Having my own show playing music would be a dream” he nodded.

Oran Park Probus Club Oran Park Probus Club has just held its first General Meeting for 2020. It was wonderful to see everyone back after the Christmas/ New Year holiday break and to welcome nine visitors, three of whom will become new members at our March meeting. This meeting will be our Annual General Meeting when our Management Committee for 2020 will be elected. We will also have a speaker from Services NSW to talk about services that are available to the older person. Our speaker at the February meeting, from the Australian Maritime Museum, gave an interesting insight into the Bombing of Darwin in 1942. Probus Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand are social clubs that promote friendship, fellowship and fun to retired and semi- retired people in the community. Maintaining a healthy social life in retirement can help to improve our physical, mental and emotional well- being. If you would like to find out what Probus has to offer, please come along to a meeting as a visitor. You will be welcomed. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month (except January), at the NewLife Church, corner of Marcus Loane Way and Central Avenue, Oran Park, at 9.30am for 10.00am start. Lamington Flavoured Chips? It was an Australia Day experiment. Smiths took the perfectly wonderful crinkle cut chip and made a small batch lamington flavoured. That’s right. Coconut and chocolate on a chip! The result? Well, in our household either, “they were the best,” or "they were horrible.” We don’t do middle ground very well these days. Twitter storms, Facebook rants, even the evening news. It’s rarely a carefully weighted story, instead it’s either amazing or a travesty. Black or white. In this light it’s always intrigued me how people describe Jesus. “He’s a good man.”“He was a good teacher.”“I’m glad you like him, but it’s not really for me.” “Whatever makes you happy.” This sort of thing. It all seems a bit smudgy and grey. You might be surprised to know that during His earthly life Jesus was a polarising figure. Some of those who followed Him and heard Him teach thought that He might be their long-expected king. On the other hand, the religious leaders of Jesus’s day decided that a man who healed on the Sabbath and hung out with tax collectors and sinners must be aligned with the devil - and must be killed! The Messiah, or a misleading mistake, were the two choices those who met him made. So who is Jesus? He tells us that He came that we might find life and find it to the full. Either that’s right or it’s wrong. A good teacher, or a fraud. On Tuesday March 24th, we’ll start a 4 week course examining Jesus. It assumes no prior knowledge, questions are welcome, and so are you. I found out we don’t need any more lamington flavoured chips by tasting. Why don’t you give Jesus a taste test and decide for yourself if He is who He claims to be. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish For the first time in 18 years, the relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux, one of the most popular saints of modern times, will visit Australia in 2020 on a four-month pilgrimage with her parents, Saints Louis and Zélie Martin. The relics will be here in Oran Park at St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish on Thursday 19th March 2020. A detailed program will soon be announced through the parish website: www.marymackillopparish.org.au The devotion to relics among many Catholics is complex, but Father Brian Lucas (National Director of Catholic Mission) likens it to a secular example. "People might go to a charity fundraiser and bid for a footy jersey signed by the team; something tangible and practical that serves as a reminder of the people or the event," he said. "That’s what the relics of the saints are intended to do, to remind us and give us the opportunity to enter into the life of those saints and what they can teach us". “St Thérèse is particularly inspiring because she served others through small, everyday acts of kindness and care,” says David Harrison, the Diocesan Director of Catholic Mission from the Wollongong Diocese. “Her message was that we need not perform grand deeds to lead ‘saintly’ lives. This message is still relevant to this day and acts as a reminder that in our often-overwhelming world, there are everyday opportunities to help others in small ways that will have a great impact". Ready to Kick Goals Our newest sporting club, Gregory Hills FC, is eagerly awaiting to take the field for the very first time this season. The local football club, which will be competing in the Macarthur Football Association Competition, already has around 80 registered players, who will make up 10 to 20 teams in their inaugural season. Gregory Hills FC are also happy to announce that they will have their first all-girls team in the Under 6’s. Pre-season games will commence this month, with the 2020 season then kicking off on 4th April. “We are very excited to see everyone get ready for our first season. Interest from players and coaches shows that there is general growth of the game in the area. The generous support from individuals and businesses has been amazing and they are just as excited to see the new club take shape” said Gregory Hills FC’s Christopher Martin to the Oran Park Gazette. Committee positions and sponsorship opportunities at Gregory Hills FC are still open. With registrations all but complete, any team vacancies will be advertised in March. For more information about Gregory Hills FC, visit their website www.gregoryhillsfc.org.au or find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GregoryHillsFC.

Campbelltown Golf Club. To help celebrate, they have enlisted the legendary Australian fast bowler and media celebrity Merv Hughes as their guest speaker. Merv is guaranteed to entertain with stories from his playing days and his time as an Australian selector and mentor. “As a club, we pride ourselves on community involvement. Through activities such as our All Abilities program, we are ensuring that we give opportunities to play in a team environment for those in our community with disabilities. “In our 50 seasons, we have had over 60 premierships across Junior and Senior competitions. Although winning is great, we are more intent on ensuring that all our players have a safe, healthy and enjoyable time playing for our Collies family” said Alan Bell, Club Patron and Life Member of Campbelltown Collegians Cricket Club. They are 50 not out this season, and on their way to the next mark. That is, a century! “All this could not have been achieved without the strong involvement of our players, supporters and especially our main sponsor the Campbelltown Catholic Club” reflected Alan.

Big Merv Supporting the Collies Season 2019/2020 is a memorable one for the Campbelltown Collegians Cricket Club. For the Gregory Hills based club, it’s their 50th season in the Camden District Cricket Association and they are celebrating throughout the year culminating in a formal dinner to be held this month, on the 21st March at the

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST

Hello Autumn! As we slide into March we welcome the news that water restrictions will be wound back to level 1. There’s no denying we’ve played witness to nature’s wildest extremes, from bushfire to heavy downpours causing floods.......... all within the first 45 days of the year. One can only wonder how the rest of the year will play out. Here at the District Gazette ‘We Live. Love.Local’. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Why not sit back, have a good read, catch up on all the latest and enjoy ‘Your Community News.’ ‘Whatever you want to do, do it! You only have so many tomorrows”.
