Music for the People There’s not too many people that follow their dreams from a young age and end up with a career doing something that they love. For successful local musician Luke Koteras, this is a path that has led him right across the country, playing with some of Australia’s top artists as well as an appearance on The Voice Australia in 2014. “I think my first steps towards being a musician came about because my Nan started to get me guitar lessons at the age of 7, after going to a Tommy Emmanuel concert. I loved being able to take the instrument with me everywhere I went. This was way before it became cool in early high school” Luke said to the Oran Park Gazette. Koteras’ musical highlights have included playing alongside many of Australia’s top shelf artists, touring and appearing on The Voice Australia five years ago. “The Voice was a great experience for me. I hadn’t been singing for very long at the time A&R approached me and said that they would like me on the show. It was a daunting experience for me at the time. I’m a lot more comfortable these days behind the microphone. The people I met and the experiences that I had through the show were great though” he explained. Luke has an exciting year of music ahead. He will be playing a couple of snow gigs in Winter and may do some possible touring with good friend Chris Sebastian, brother of Guy Sebastian. He also hopes to release a country pop music EP in the future. For now, there’s never been a more important time for the local community to support live music and get behind musicians like Luke. “Live music I feel affects everyone’s mood differently, but it brings a certain vibe to a venue that you can’t create from a DJ or an iPod. Most of all, it brings life into a town or city. Whether it’s sitting back having a beer and watching some of your favourite artists or actually playing live on stage, music is great for everyone. It doesn’t matter about your culture, belief, age or skin tone. It brings enjoyment to everyone” he concluded. U Macarthur’s Luke Koteras | Image Supplied by Luke Koteras

Lung Disease doesn’t Discriminate The month of May is Lung Health Awareness Month. Lung disease affects almost 1 in 3 Australians and is responsible for 1 in 7 deaths, however many people tend to ignore the signs and symptoms, often not doing anything about it for far too long. We are all are used to thinking about our heart and skin health, but our lungs are equally important. It’s time we made our lung health a priority as well. This Lung Health Awareness Month, Lung Foundation Australia is urging Australians to stop guessing what may be causing symptoms like breathlessness or fatigue, and to learn how to recognise and act upon the symptoms of lung disease. Most of us never stop to think about our breathing, it’s just something we do. Research shows that almost half (46%) of all Australians rarely or never think about their lung health. Despite this, almost two-thirds of Australians (68%) reported that they have experienced at least one lung related health issue. There are a few simple things you can do to help look after your lung health: • Make your life a smoke-free zone by quitting smoking and/or reducing your exposure to second hand smoke. • Wear appropriate protective equipment if you work in environments that expose you to the inhalation of dust, gas, fumes or chemicals. • Protect yourself from influenza and pneumonia by having the vaccinations. • Exercise regularly and have a healthy diet. • Practice good hand hygiene to minimise the spread of germs. Come and Join the West Sydney Pirates The West Sydney Pirates are an American Football Club based in the south-west of Sydney, including the Macarthur, Campbelltown and Camden areas. 2015 marked the Club's 30th Anniversary season, making it the third oldest Club in NSW and one of the most established and successful Clubs in the country. “We’re looking forward to high quality American Football this season. Off the back of this comes the victories. The Colts made the playoffs last season, whilst Division 1 missed out, which was their first time since 2000. If we can keep injury free, it will be great for the Colts to continue their success and Division 1 return to cement their position in the competition” said Ian Taylor, Head Coach of Division 1 West Sydney Pirates. “We enjoy teaching the game to new people and helping them to learn more about American Football” he added. The local club regularly have players that have represented State and National teams. The Pirates field teams in both the Division 1 (over 19's) and Colts (15 to 19-year-old) competitions in the Gridiron NSW League and are looking for players and staff for the upcoming 2019 season. They will be holding an Orientation Day and tryouts on Saturday, June 1 at Craik Park, Eleventh Avenue, Austral commencing at 1.00pm. For more information about the West Sydney Pirates, you can email them at info@wspirates.com or find them on Facebook. See their advertisement on this same page. Memories of Mum Mother’s Day is just around the corner and although this is usually a time of celebration, it isn’t always a joyous time for everyone. For those who are not fortunate enough to have their mum around to spoil, spend the day with, call or text, the day can be somewhat challenging and isolating. Thankfully, there is a brand new organisation that supports and assists Australian girls and women whose mums have sadly passed away. Motherless Daughters Australia is a not for profit organisation that was founded by two Victorian women, who had also lost their mum, with the hope of making a difference to the lives of those who experience mother loss. The organisation connects and unites women in the same shoes through a supportive online platform and through events and functions to facilitate new friendships and support networks. There is talk of future plans to extend their supportive reach to sons and fathers. Whilst Motherless Daughters Australia is there to support women through the everyday and life’s major milestones, they know that receiving comfort and support during the lead up to Mother’s Day and on Mother’s Day is also very important and can be very therapeutic. The annual and signature event hosted by the not for profit organisation is a series of pre Mother’s Day High Teas which will run in four major cities this year – one is in Sydney on Sunday 5th May. It’s a lovely afternoon and opportunity to meet and mingle with other motherless daughters during the lead up to Mother’s Day. A chance to talk to those who ‘get it’ and who show the utmost empathy and compassion in a way that is purely indescribable unless you’ve experienced it. Women enjoy a glass of champagne, indulge in delicious food and engage in some of the most uplifting, reassuring and validating conversions whilst honouring their mum and making some special connections. Your Chance to Feature on the First Camden Edition of Monopoly Local businesses and organisations have the unique chance to feature on the first-ever Camden edition of Monopoly. Camden Council, in partnership with Winning Moves Australia, is designing and producing 2,000 copies of the game. Council is now calling for interested local businesses who would like to have their organisation involved in the project. There are three sponsorship packages available with limited spaces available, including: • Gold ($10,500), which includes the business’ logo on some Chance and Community Chest cards, as well as on one space on the board and a branded token; • Silver ($6,000), which includes the business’ logo on some Chance and Community Chest cards as well as on one space on the board; and • Bronze ($2,500), which includes the business’ logo on some Chance and Community Chest cards. Mayor of Camden, Cr Peter Sidgreaves, said expressions of interest close Friday 31 May. “This is a unique opportunity for businesses and organisations to receive incredible brand exposure, not only in Camden but throughout the state, and be a part of something very exciting,” Cr Sidgreaves said. “Camden is one of the greatest areas in the country. It’s home to some iconic and breathtaking natural landscapes and wildlife, it has thriving and dynamic local businesses and community organisations and our residents have strong ties to the area and their communities. “The Camden edition of Monopoly is the perfect item for residents, new and old.” The game will also feature popular and much-loved landmarks from the Camden area. A poll will be run through
Council’s Facebook page, in the coming weeks, asking residents to vote for which landmarks should be included on the board and the locations with the most votes will then be used. It is due to hit the shelves in time for Christmas and will be available for purchase, for $60, at: • Camden Visitor Information Centre, 46 Camden Valley Way, Elderslie • Camden Council administration building, 70 Central Avenue, Oran Park; • Oran Park Library, 72 Central Avenue, Oran Park; • Camden Library, 40 John Street, Camden; • Narellan Library, corner Queen and Elyard Streets, Narellan; and • Participating local businesses. All funds received from the sale of the game will be donated to Lifeline Macarthur and the Camden Wollondilly Domestic Violence Committee. For more information, including sponsorship packages and prices, visit bit.ly/camdenmonopoly or call Council on 4654 7777.

FAITH FA AITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish As all of us who live or work in Oran Park Town or any of the surrounding suburbs know first hand, there are lots of homes and other structures that continue to be built and new estates being constructed. As sociologists tell us, just as we put time and effort into building our physical structures (such as our homes and businesses) it is equally important - and I would argue even more important - to also invest (both individually and collectively) in building up our community and laying good foundations in our personal lives and in our relationships with one another. As they say, we can live in the most beautifully constructed house and live in the most stylish and fashionable street but our 'true home' in which we live (aka our body) can be physically or emotionally or spiritually in ruin, and our daily lives can be without adequate foundations and supports to help us weather the storms of life. As we continue to see lots of buildings and other infrastructure being constructed around us I suppose the questions you and I can ask ourselves are: what 'foundations' are we constructing to ensure we can grow and build up our life and the lives of our families and community? What are the 'bricks' that we are laying to help us weather the storms of daily living? St Paul, the author of many of the letters found in the New Testament of the Bible, offers us some great advice on the foundations we should put done and the sort of bricks we should lay. As he says we need to lay 'foundations' and 'bricks' of "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness" (Galatians 5:22-24). Whether we are Christian or not, I think St Paul's words are good advice for all of us as we both individually and collectively go about the construction of our homes and our lives. Are you an avid watcher of those shows like Better Homes which will take you through everything from turning a table into a dog kennel, upgrading your lawn, to baking a better lemon tart? It seems that with a bit of courage and a goodly amount of YouTube we’re ready to have a go at pretty much anything. Coming up in May I’ve invited a mate to give us a DIY guide to something that you mightn’t be innately good at. Liam keeps all sorts of animals around his home including sheep. Over the years he’s become a proficient ‘backyard butcher’ able to reduce a sheep’s carcass to a set of delicious chops in no time at all. The plan is to get together, watch Liam do his thing, then give you a go at carving out your own steak before getting the chance to BBQ it and add in a few potatoes and salad to call it a meal. Along the way Liam will be sharing a bit of his journey from being an outsider to the concept of church and God to being a follower of Jesus today. If that sounds good then you’re invited to come along on Saturday May 18th. Tickets will be available via our website and it should be a top night. After all, you never know when you might be called up on to render assistance for dinner with a full sheep on the chopping block!

Atopic Dermatitis Meet the handsome Dexter, a 3-yearold German Shepherd who came into Uni Vets Camden to visit Dr Tina Baxter about his itchy skin. Dexter has suffered from allergic skin disease for most of his life. Like many dogs, the cause of his allergy was thought to be something ‘in the air’; similar to hay fever that humans experience. This condition is called atopic dermatitis. To try to work out which airborne substances Dexter is allergic to, he underwent intradermal allergy testing with Dr Tina. This procedure involved sedating him and giving 61 small injections just under his skin. This allowed us to test for skin reactions to a large spectrum of environmental allergens, such as dust mites, pollens from trees, weeds and grasses, moulds and insects. After about 10 minutes, the injection sites were measured under bright light. In the picture, you can see that Dexter reacted to a few allergens, including fleas, and dust mites. Dexter was a very brave boy and the results of this test gave important information to Dr Tina and his owner, to help focus his treatment plan in the future. Like in human medicine, Dexter can get immunotherapy to desensitise him to these allergens over time. The substances (pollens, dust mites, insects or moulds) he reacted to in the allergy test are concentrated into a liquid (we call it an ‘allergy vaccine’) and he is given an injection of this regularly. This idea is to ‘teach’ his body to learn to cope with the substances, and his owner can give the injections at home. Allergy vaccines are one of the many options to treat allergic pets, and demonstrate how advances in veterinary medicine can help our furry friends live healthier, happier lives!
