The Camden Show Society is receiving a Federal Government cash boost to help it bounce back bigger and better from COVID-19. Across the country, 110 agricultural shows are being boosted with more Australian Government support to help them bounce back from COVID-19 cancellations. Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said the Camden Show is an important annual event for businesses and local tourism in this area. “The pandemic has had a huge impact on our agricultural shows, and we need to support them to bounce back and ensure they continue on into the future,” Mr Taylor said. “I’m very pleased The Camden Show Society will receive an extra $1,955 on top of the $70,000 already provided under this program last year.” “This is great news for the show committee and volunteers who work so tirelessly to bring the show together.” For more information on the Supporting Agricultural Shows and Field Days program, visit www.agriculture.gov.au/ ag-farm-food/infrastructure/supporting-ag-shows. Fast Facts: • The supplementary funding will be delivered to grantees in April-June 2021. • The Supporting Agricultural Shows and Field Days Program reimburses eligible costs for shows and field days that had to cancel because of COVID-19. • There are 580 agricultural shows nationwide that contribute $1 billion to the economy, attract six million visitors and are serviced by 50,000 volunteers. • 110 events will share in $710,817.54 Supporting Agricultural Shows and Field Days program supplementary payments.

You can register and book your Mother’s Day Classic local locations now. These locations will be smaller and more informal than in previous years due to limits on public gatherings. However, local locations will be big on community spirit, uniting Australians on Mother’s Day. “After having to go virtual last year, the Mother’s Day Classic is returning in 2021 with local community participation. We are very excited to be able to welcome people to so many locations across the country where Mother’s Day Classic Local supporters can don their pink attire, connect with the MDC community, and take part in the event together on Mother’s Day in a COVIDsafe manner” said Zara Lawless, Mother’s Day Classic CEO. “Due to the ever-changing climate we live in, participation numbers are capped at each location, so spots are limited. People will need to book early to secure their location of choice”. Alternatively, participants can take part in the Mother’s Day Classic on a day and time at a location that suits them. MOTHERS DAY

CHRISTMESS in Macarthur

The cameras are set to start rolling this Christmas in July, on Indie film CHRISTMESS, in the Macarthur (the West Pole) and they want you to be part of this film! Directed by multi-award winning and AACTA nominated Heath Davis (Broke - Netflix, Bookweek - Stan, Locusts - Amazon Prime), and starring Steve Le Marquand (Two Hands, Les Norton, Broke), Susan Prior (Animal Kingdom, Bookweek, Aftertaste) and introducing international alt-indie-rock sensation; the Middle Kids frontwoman Hannah Joy fresh from her performance on the James Corden show. So, here’s the film: Fresh out of rehab, a desperate once famous actor - Chris Flint - takes a job as a Santa Claus in a suburban strip mall where he unexpectedly encounters his long-estranged daughter and infant grandson. With the love and support of his kind and caring sponsor, Carol, and a young, sharp tongued, gay musician also in recovery named Joy, Chris sets about staying sober to win his daughter’s forgiveness for Christmas. CHRISTMESS is an irreverently funny yet sobering celebration of the Christmas (and human) spirit and a reminder that the only gifts that truly matter can’t be wrapped up and placed under the tree: friendship, family, forgiveness, and love. “We’re really excited to be bringing the production to the Macarthur. Indie-films have a great way of bringing communities together, I’ve seen it happen with my last three films and I see this as a great opportunity to unearth some local talent” said Heath Davis, Director. “CHRISTMESS is a celebration of the human spirit, the kindness of strangers and the healing power of forgiveness; a timeless message, which perhaps now has more meaning and significance than ever before” explained Heath. CHRISTMESS is the first collaboration between Davis and film production company Brick Studios and they’re reaching out to the community to become involved in this film. “The Macarthur region is a charismatic and diverse area and is a natural fit for this film, a story full of heart and salt of the earth characters navigating one of the most stressful times of year” said Daniel Fenech, Producer. So, if you're a local actor looking for that big break with speaking roles alongside Australia's best acting talent, they have plenty of roles to cast across a range of ages and ethnicities. For individuals or local businesses looking to support the film, visit them at https://www.facebook.com/christmessfilm. They also have a range of perks on offer on their crowdfunding page at https://igg.me/at/christmessmovie. r Producer Daniel Fenech on set | Image Supplied by Brick Studios

Property Leads the Charge in South West Sydney South West Sydney continues to lead the way in Australia’s current property boom. The abundance of land due to be developed and released over the next 12 months and the significant infrastructure and construction currently planned and being built is expected to be eagerly swallowed up by the market. Lily Beckhurst started as a Graduate Engineer with Richard Crookes Constructions, the builders responsible for the current Metro Apartments and TRN House in Oran Park Town and hopes the experience she learns will be invaluable. Her goal is to save enough and put a deposit on one of the new apartments soon to be built. “I’m really hoping to live so centrally,” said Lily. “Connectability” is becoming a catch phrase across the Camden LGA, especially with the next round of scheduled projects due for completion” mentioned Mick Owens, General Manager of Greenfields Development Company, developers of Oran Park Town. “These following projects are scheduled to commence in 2021/22 - Oran Park Leisure Centre ($63m), Commercial 2 Building ($45m), Podium Retail Centre – Stage 3 and Hotel ($120m), Oran Park Tavern ($50m), Aged Care Centres ($70m) and Two Apartment Buildings ($50m). “Oran Park Town is currently the closest Commercial Centre to the new airport and we’re in discussion with several hotel operators exploring the best way of delivering this accommodation offering,” said Mr. Owen. This is in addition to the remaining $2b worth of construction planned in South West Sydney as Oran Park Town continues to align itself with the new Bradfield city. The new Western Sydney Airport, which will open in 2026 and Aerotropolis have a current construction value of $14b. The NSW State Government will be spending another $6b on the associated rail link. Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said The NSW Government recognises the importance of South West Sydney and the opportunities the Western Sydney Airport and Aerotropolis will bring. “The Western Parkland City through the Western Sydney City Deal will interconnect the new airport and surrounding Aerotropolis and contribute 200,000 jobs with less than 30 minutes travel time from people’s homes,” Mr Sidgreaves said. Jeff Webb of Greenfields Development Company said, “the new Aerotropolis is a major driver in the state’s economy. It’s expected that this will contribute 200,000 new jobs over the next decade”. r Feature Article: [Cover] Lily Beckhurst, Graduate Engineer at Richard Crookes Constructions on the Metro Apartment site at Oran Park [Above] Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves, MP | Images/Article: Greenfields

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

Too Much Violence Don’t turn away. This is serious! Our lives and our children’s lives are being eroded by this insidious crime every day, all day, for years and years on end. It robs adults of their mental health and wellbeing and it robs

children of their potential. It costs the Australian economy in excess of 13 billion dollars per year in lost productivity and support services and hospital admissions. Imagine if a government department was losing that amount of money every year, there would be a public outcry, a royal commission, politicians would be losing their jobs. This problem is domestic and family violence (DFV). You have probably read the stats. It’s more prevalent than you are led to believe. And unlike any other crime, the victims are usually blamed for the problem – ‘why doesn’t she leave?’ ‘if she didn’t do this, he wouldn’t do that’. The victim blaming causes more inaction and the problem just gets worse. What is DFV? It is a pattern of manipulation, coercion, control, and violence. It’s not just incidents of violence, it is not just hitting. One person systematically erodes the other person (a partner, spouse, or a family member) financially, verbally, spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, sexually, and technologically. The victim is degraded to such a point that they don’t know who they are anymore, they constantly second guess what they are thinking, feeling and experiencing. DFV undermines the parent’s ability to be the best parent they can be and children are victims too. Sometimes the User of Violence is really sweet for a while and the victim thinks everything is OK, but it always comes around to what the user of violence does each and every day to exercise power and control over the victim. It is NOT about anger management because many Users of Violence do not behave this way in the community and at work. Users of Violence frequently minimise and deny their behaviours and they blame the victim. It’s part of the pattern of abuse. They’ll do anything to not take responsibility for their actions. To be clear - there is absolutely NO circumstance where anybody is entitled to use violence within their family. The answer is to stop blaming victims and make Users of Violence responsible for their beliefs, thoughts, and actions. We need to raise our sons to be respectful towards girls, and we need to raise our girls to have self-respect and be attuned to the warning signs of coercion and control. Let’s stop it at the start. Funding Secured to Improve Road Safety Local road safety around schools will be improved after Council accepted almost $1.5 million in grant funding from Transport for NSW under the Federal Government’s Road Safety Program. The program prioritises the development and delivery of road safety infrastructure projects across NSW to support jobs and stimulate local economies. Projects confirmed to be completed in the Camden area include: • Spring Farm Public School – children’s crossing with kerb extensions and footpath ($50,000) • Gledswood Hills Public School – children’s crossing with kerb extensions ($35,000) • St Justin’s Catholic Parish Primary School – children crossing ($20,000) • Camden Public School – indented bus bay on Mitchell Street, Camden and indented drop off/pick up bay at Exeter Street, Camden ($110,000) • Cobbitty Public School – indented bus bay ($100,000) • The Hermitage Way – three pedestrian refuges ($180,000) • Gledswood Hills Drive – three pedestrian refuges ($180,000) • Harrington Park Public School – raise existing pedestrian crossing, upgrade lighting and extend the 40-kilometre per hour zone ($200,000) • Elderslie Public School – raise existing pedestrian crossing ($200,000); and • Camden Public School – raise existing pedestrian crossing and upgrade lighting on Mitchell and John Streets, Camden ($400,000) Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the funding provides a welcome improvement around several local schools. “It is important for Council to work for the community in securing Government funding where it can, and these works will further increase safety around schools in our area” Cr Fedeli said. “As the area continues to grow, it is a high priority for Council to continue to look for avenues to not only provide new services and facilities, but to also improve those already existing. “I thank the Federal and State Governments for their support for the area of Camden and look forward to seeing the completed works”.

Macarthur FC Defender Calls Camden Home Gregory Hills is the place to be, according to Macarthur FC defender Ivan Franjic. The former Socceroo moved into the area after signing with the new A-League franchise last year and has loved the move. Franjic, who has also played in South Korea and Russia, said it was fantastic to be living in a growing area. “Gregory Hills is a great area, you can see it is developing and there is heaps to do in the area, so I am very happy with the move” Mr Franjic said. “Quite a few people have been friendly and stopped to say hello in the area as well. It is good to have that support close to home especially for a young team. “The team has also started to settle quite well, and we are excited about the games ahead. I remember playing in Camden in the pre-season and there were lots of people who were quite vocal who came out. “It would be great if all local sports fans come out to watch us at home, as I can tell you now it will be an enjoyable ride”. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the inclusion of Macarthur FC as a range of benefits to the wider community. “Not only has Macarthur FC allowed Camden residents to have a team of their own to support on the national level, but also set up a fantastic pathway for junior footballers” Cr Fedeli said. “This team also allows us to put Macarthur on the map and show how great and diverse an area we live in. “I have enjoyed attending Macarthur FC home games so far and I would love to see more Camden locals supporting our team”. Council committed more than $20,000 in sponsorship to Macarthur FC late last year, creating a connection to Camden residents through: • School holiday activities – including four school holiday clinics for local juniors in the Camden area; • Macarthur FC players to assist in promotion of Council programs; • New resident engagement; • Macarthur FC to be invited to participate in Council events; • Promotion of Macarthur FC through Camden area including banners; and • Council to provide up to 20 hours to field and amenities usage for training purposes to Macarthur FC. Battery Recycling Stations across Camden Did you know your household batteries can be recycled? Residents are encouraged to continue their great work recycling in Camden by taking advantage of Council’s all-inone recycling station available at three locations across the Camden area. The all-in-one recycling station accepts household batteries, printer cartridges and mobile phones, and can be found at the following three locations: • Camden Council Administration Building, 70 Central Avenue, Oran Park • Narellan Library, corner Queen and Elyard Streets, Narellan and • Camden Library, 40 John Street, Camden Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said it was important to recycle these items for the benefit of the environment. “Taking care of the beautiful environment we live in is critical to helping future generations enjoy it as much as we do” Cr Fedeli said. “Recycling batteries for example not only saves natural

Oran Park Probus Club

resources but also protects the environment by keeping heavy metals out of landfill. “Our all-in-one recycling stations are conveniently located in Oran Park, Narellan and Camden for the benefit of our residents to be able to use them. “I urge the community to get behind this and continue to be recycle smart”. Residents can also recycle their phones at participating Mobile Muster drop off centres in the Camden area, while also recycling their printer cartridges at all Officeworks stores and participating Australia Post, Cartridge World, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, JB Hi-Fi, Office National and Office Products Depot outlets. A free E-Waste service is also available to residents and small businesses in the Camden area at the Spring Farm Resource Recovery Park, 20 Barrow Road, Spring Farm. For more information on waste services in Camden, go to camden.nsw.gov.au and search ‘Waste Services’.

The next general meeting of Oran Park Probus Club will be held on Tuesday May 4, 2021. Our meetings are held in the Function Room of Wests Lakeside Golf Club at Camden, commencing at 10.00am. Each month we invite a guest speaker to give a talk. Topics are many and varied and often involve a power point display with photographs, a video and even stand- up comedy. Many of our members stay after the meeting to enjoy lunch at the club. Now that the COVID-19 rules have relaxed, the members are looking forward to enjoying outings and events together. The Coffee and Chat mornings are always popular. Unfortunately, the recent heavy rain and flooding caused the postponement of a car rally we had planned, but that will be taking place shortly along with a seafood lunch and a ‘picnic and games in the park’ event! Our new walking group could double as a photography group, as it is impossible to walk past a new family of ducklings

without wanting to take a few photos! The purpose of Probus is to promote friendship, fellowship, and fun amongst retired and semi-retired people within the community. If this has piqued your interest and you would like to find out more about Oran Park Probus Club or Probus in general, please come to a meeting as a visitor – you will be welcomed. For more information, please call the secretary Ph: 0410 758755 or email: oranpark@probusclubs.com.au. r

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish While our supermarkets have moved on from Easter, with shelves now cleared of Easter Eggs and other related seasonal products, more than ever this year during these ongoing days of the COVID-19 pandemic, we all need the spirit of Easter to live on. As Pope Francis said, due to COVID-19 protocols and restrictions “the lives of millions of people have suddenly changed. For many, remaining at home has been an opportunity to reflect, to withdraw from the frenetic pace of life, stay with loved ones and enjoy their company. For many, though, this is also a time of worry about an uncertain future, about jobs that are at risk and about other consequences of the current crisis”. He went onto say, “This is not a time for indifference, because the whole world is suffering and needs to be united in facing the pandemic. This is not a time for self-centredness, because the challenge we are facing is shared by all, without distinguishing between persons. This is not a time for division. May Christ our peace enlighten all who have responsibility in conflicts, that they may have the courage to support the appeal for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. This is not a time for forgetfulness. The crisis we are facing should not make us forget the many other crises that bring suffering to so many people”. But what is this a time for? For me, I think it is a time when we are being invited, amongst the members of our household and in our circle of acquaintances, to create a strong web of love to hold and care for everyone as this crisis continues to unfold. It also demands of us a patience and tolerance, and a willingness to share, and do tasks we might have taken for granted belonged to others. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these … you did to me” (Matt 25:40)

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Things are looking up. A travel bubble from Australia to New Zealand has opened. Things are certainly looking very different to this time last year. It’s promising and giving great hope, as the roll out of the COVID vaccine continues. I know I’m excited to see events returning to calendars and more people out and about, supporting local businesses who have operated in a bleak void for the past 12 months. We’re on the cusp of Mothers Day which is the perfect timing to put your Dine & Discover vouchers to good use. If you haven’t already taken advantage of this great Government initiative, search for more information via Service NSW. Narelle broaches an important topic in ‘Parents Corner’ this month. Domestic Family Violence, let’s stop it at the start! Read more on Page 6. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News. ‘Life is short, take the trip, buy the shoes and most importantly, eat the cake!’. Happy Mothers Day to one and all, and to my amazing Mum in the clouds....3 years without you and it doesn’t get any easier xox
