Maurizio’s Football Dream Local Harrington Park 10-year-old Maurizio Warden was just an average kid who loved football when he attended the Football Star Academy Camden launch back in August, until one of their professional coaches spotted his football talents and reported it to head office. With his outstanding skills, willpower and dedication to be a champion, he was invited to Melbourne. He participated in training with Jesper Olsen (Danish International and ex Manchester United player) under the Centre of Excellence program then again to Europe where he got to visit key clubs in both Italy and Germany and play games against the best in both countries. This included watching elite games and taking in the atmosphere of what it would be like to be a full time professional. When asked what his experience was like, Maurizio explained “there wasn't a lot of rest time and we played and trained for football every day. I wanted to make the most of it. Everyone wants to be a great player but I know after seeing it that it takes hard work and commitment”. With his career mapped out and the determination to be one of the best, there is just no stopping him. With Jesper Olsen as Technical Director and Teigen Allen (Sydney FC and Matilda player) as well as Daniel Saboune (Head Coach and Operations Manager), they produce high level professional coaches and systems to bring out the best football from all the children. We wish Maurizio all the best in his career. If you would like to know more Alessio Gibin, Juventus Youth Coach (L) and Maurizio about FSA, go to www.footballstaracademy.com.au. Corrado’s Passion Harrington Park resident Corrado Peluso may have only moved to the local area two and a half years ago, but already the talented artist has fallen in love with and embraced the rich history and natural beauty of the Macarthur with his amazing artwork. “I have always been fascinated by art, ever since I was young. I began painting at an early age before taking it seriously about 10 years ago. Since then, I haven’t looked back” explained Corrado. Corrado was the Artist of the Month at the Camden Library last month, something he describes as “an honour for me to exhibit my artworks to the community and very humbling”. He has also entered a painting titled ‘Regret’ in the 2017 Fisher’s Ghost Award, which coincides with Campbelltown’s annual Festival of Fisher’s Ghost, with the winner announced this month. He has previously exhibited his artworks at The ARThouse Café and Restaurant in Narellan. The local artist draws inspiration from the region, with many of his ideas coming from our very own backyard, “The old school charm and country feel of Camden is what I love. It’s not too modernised and has real character”. This was demonstrated with a recent artwork he completed after visiting the Camden Show and observing the country show celebrations. His plans are to continue with his artwork from his local studio, with the hope of one day making a living off his art. “I enjoy capturing the moment and showing the local area in a positive light. My wish is to share this passion through my art, so that the community and people will enjoy the region as much as I do” said Corrado. For more information about Corrado Peluso, search ‘Corrado Peluso Art’ on Facebook.

New Netball Courts Now Complete Construction of a new outdoor netball complex is now complete as part of the first phase of the Narellan Sports Hub development. Council has delivered the $11 million sports facility to fulfil the needs of the growing community, as identified in the Camden Sportsground Strategy 2014. “Delivering high quality sports and recreation facilities is a high priority for the Council,” said Mayor Lara Symkowiak. “The project has delivered 30 high quality netball courts and an expansive amenities building that will cater for the growth of this sport in our area. There are plans to add another 14 courts in the future,” Cr Symkowiak said. “This new complex is positioned near existing sports grounds and will be extended in a number of stages to include other facilities,” she said. Stage 1 of the sports hub project has provided: • Centrally located amenities building that includes canteen, walk in cool room, meeting rooms, computerised security features, toilets, kitchen and barbecue; • 30 netball courts; • Floodlighting; • 400 car parking spaces; • Playground; • Fencing; and • Landscaping The development will ultimately feature athletics facilities, 44 netball courts and multi-purpose sports grounds. “I would like to thank the Camden Netball Association for their input into the project. This was truly a collaborative effort between Council and the netball association,” she said. Camden Netball Association used the courts for the first time for the start of their summer competition in October.

you. There are psychological treatments that are usually conducted one on one by a Psychologist, Psychiatrist or Counsellor, though others may benefit from a group setting or online programs. Many of you may have heard of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (or CBT) as an established psychological treatment for depression. There are established medical treatments for depression including antidepressant medication that may be prescribed by GP’s, psychiatrists or other medical practitioners. Many antidepressants recalibrate levels of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin, and there are well over a dozen different antidepressants that are commonly prescribed in the treatment of depression.
Feeling sadness is a universal experience, but depression is a medical illness. In some, depression is severe and disabling enough to be considered a mood disorder that can require help from trained professionals. In those with clinical depression, the low mood is sustained for long periods of time, sometimes without a known reason. Other symptoms of clinical depression can include diminished interest in things that would normally bring joy (eg spending time with friends or loved ones) sleep disturbance, change in appetite and weight, low energy levels, poor concentration, increased anxiety and thoughts of death or suicide. What causes depression? Depression is often caused by a variety of factors and although it is sometimes difficult to identify the cause, it doesn’t make the depression any less debilitating. Factors that mean you could be more likely to develop depression include family history of mental illness, drug and alcohol use, medical illnesses (including chronic pain, stroke, heart disease) adverse life events (eg abuse, divorce, unemployment) as well as other mental health conditions, such as severe anxiety.
What is the role of family and friends? The role of family and friends can be pivotal in a person’s recovery. They can offer support, understanding and encouragement, not only at the start but throughout the recovery process. This is especially important as the natural inclination for the depressed person will often be to isolate themselves. A support person may be able to help with problem solving, medication compliance, symptom monitoring and by also helping the depressed person obtain the help they need.
What treatments are available? Treatment for depression is widely available and often very effective. As a first step it is always useful to consider lifestyle factors, such as ensuring adequate sleep, regular physical activity, a healthy balanced diet and managing stress levels. Beyond these, there are a range of effective treatments available for depression and talking to your GP is good way to start narrowing down which options will work best for

Get Ready for Light Up Camden Light Up Camden is a great family friendly event with lots to see and do in the beautiful environs of historic Camden. It provides a fantastic Saturday evening out for all and the enduring popularity clearly shows that the community loves to get together, celebrate the upcoming festivities and the countdown to the end of the year. There is plenty of parking available at the Bicentennial Equestrian Park as well as around the perimeter of town – a short park and walk away. Some of the major features of Light Up Camden consist of an outstanding variety of Christmas market stalls including many artisan gifts for family and friends; fantastic entertainment provided by local schools, local dance groups, as well as a performance by the fantastic Urban Opera. There is entertainment for the whole family to enjoy, including fun rides in Larkin Place. Historic John Street will again be transformed into Eat Street. Of course, come and meet Santa (children can give him their wishlist!) Everyone can enter the huge Rotary Christmas raffle which will be on display. The Mayor’s Christmas Card competition winner will be announced and the Christmas tree lights switched on after a community countdown. An amazing fireworks display will light up the sky at the end of the evening’s entertainment. Light Up Camden will take place on Saturday 18th of November from 4:00pm to 9:00pm at Argyle and John Streets in Camden.

Paralysis Ticks Paralysis ticks are a life-threatening parasite affecting dogs and cats. Although not found in the Camden area, your animal can pick them up when visiting a tick area. They are prevalent in bushy, long grassed and sea-side areas, making dogs that take trips to the coast at the highest risk. Paralysis ticks produce a toxin that will affect your pet’s central nervous system, causing progressive paralysis and potentially death. The signs of tick paralysis are many and varied but can include: • Change in the sounds of the animals bark or meow, panting or loud breathing • Dilated pupils • Vomiting, regurgitation or excessive salivation, loss of appetite • Back leg weakness or in severe cases, being unable to stand or jump. Be Vigilant Get into the habit of checking your animal every time they have been in a tick prone area. Run your fingers slowly through your dog or cat’s fur down to the skin level and feel for any
bumps. Check the entire body including between the toes, inside and behind the ears, and the armpits. Ticks can be found up to 14 days after visiting a tick area. Ticks vary in size depending upon the stage of the lifecycle. They range from the size of a pin head to a small grape after they have feed, a state referred to as engorged (pictured). What To Do Ticks can be removed using a tick twister (also pictured). In order to remove the whole tick, get hold of the tick as close to the skin as possible, then slowly but firmly pull the tick away or twist, if using a tick twister. Bring it along with your animal to the vet. This will allow the vet to identify the tick and undertake any necessary treatment. Prevention – Always Better Than Cure Ultimately the best solution for your pet is to use preventative treatment. If you are unsure what type of treatment is right for your animal, ask your vet for a recommendation. For dogs, there are collars, spot-ons and chews, the latter of which are some of the most effective tick preventatives as well as providing excellent flea protection. For cats, only Frontline spray is available. Note that if you are using Advantix or Frontline, you must apply these in advance of visiting a tick area and both must be applied fortnightly for tick control. FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park NSW 2570
Humility for Failure There’s a line that all Christians are hypocrites.. And a cheeky response that says, “Yeah, come and join us - there’s plenty of room!” Of course there’s more to say. At some level it’s refreshing to hear people holding Christians to a higher standard - after all God expects us to live in a way that is recognisably changed when we make Jesus king. However you might be surprised to know that in the Bible we see that even God expects Christians will fall short of His holy standards at some point. In a letter written to Christians just after the time that Jesus died and rose again we find these words, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.” Now there’s two great things to observe there. Firstly, we can see that God offers full and free forgiveness for the sins that are confessed (that is owned up to humbly before Him) because of
what Jesus has done on the cross. We’re urged to confess to God and it’s best done in humility because we have nothing to brag about when we’ve fallen short of living in a way that’s pleasing to Him. There’s a wonderful assurance on offer if we do - being forgiven and cleaned. The second observation is that anyone who claims to be a Christian and claims they haven’t sinned is declaring that God is a liar. Wow! It’s clear that Christians need to own their mistakes or they’ll be disowning God! So, let’s assume you live in the same world I do. We all trip up (even against our own standards). When we do so we should seek to make things right with those we’ve hurt, admit our faults, and turn to God who provides the ultimate cancellation of our sin. If we don’t do that we’re worse than hypocrites - we’re denying God. There’s some humility and hope for failures.

And this is before we face our domestic challenges … And then there is the myriad of other things that stop us short: a health scare, work pressures … The worries of life can crowd in on us and our anxiety levels rise”. As this author goes onto say “It appears this is not just a twentyfirst-century problem, however”. As St Paul said in a number of his letters, in particular his letter to the Philippians “sometimes the world of the unseen God is more present to us than we would like. That there are times when we need to accept that there are things in life that we cannot control – and maybe we don’t need to. And at
the end of the day perhaps we can find a still point, confident that in our little corner of the world we did the best we could that day to be fair, kind and just. It is at that moment, perhaps that we can draw upon the words attributed to St Augustine and entrust our anxieties and those of the world to the Lord and allow the peace of God to enter our hearts: Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give your angels and saints charge over those who sleep. Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ. Rest your weary ones. Bless your dying ones. Soothe your suffering ones. Pity your afflicted ones. Shield your joyous ones, and all for your love's sake. Amen” (To read this full article go to the October eNews of the Archbishop’s Office for Evangelisation: http://www.cam.org.au/ evangelisation/About/Subscribe)

Take Your Business From Surviving to Thriving Strong population growth in the Camden Macarthur region is driving small and micro-business activity and it’s accelerating a rate of knots. The bottom line is that an average of just over 1000 new microbusinesses are being added to the Australian economy every month. The Camden Macarthur region is a micro-business hot spot, where the increase has been more than eight times the national average...but not many of them will survive their first few years. It’s extremely challenging for small businesses to survive in such a competitive business market – they have to go through a lot of difficulties and fight for survival. Many small businesses are founded with great vision and determination but starting a business is a challenging task and maintaining it can be an even larger challenge. Here are the Top 5 challenges I’m seeing from many local businesses: 1. Proper marketing: In today’s market, you won’t survive without a proper strategy and a rock-solid marketing plan. 2. Sustainable customers: Great products and services alone are
12

not enough. You need to deliver an exceptional customer service experience and create customers who create customers. 3. Cash flow: Mastering cash flow can be the very real difference between a thriving business and a failed one. If you lack the skill of managing cash flow, then its best to seek help. 4. People: Your employees will make or break you. They are key to creating and ultimately delivering your customer experience, so attracting and keeping the right talent is critical. 5. Processes: How would your business cope if your output expectations tripled? From the outset, create and document processes that enable business growth. According to the ABS, more than 60% of small businesses in Sydney fail during their first three years. There are several reasons for such poor survival rates but it is evident that to succeed in business, especially in Sydney, you need to come up with a clear strategy and a rock-solid game plan. Are you ready to take your business to the next level? Start planning today and make 2018 your year.

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST
Next time I put pen to paper for 'The Last Word', it will be less than 30 days until Christmas. Many of you (like me!) will be frantically preparing their minds ready for the season ahead. I must admit, I am a huge fan of this time of year. The weather is glorious, the landscape is picturesque (especially in our part of the world).... and if you stop for just a moment of your busy day, you can hear the wind blowing, the birds chirping and all kinds of natural beauty that surrounds us! 'Being happy is a do-it-yourself project', friends close to me will know just how much these words resonate with me... Enjoy your Community News.
