Our Local Karting Champion Harrington Park’s Ryan Tomsett may have only taken up karting just three years ago, but already the talented nineyear-old can lay claim to winning back to back Australian Kart Championships, with his second title arriving recently. “Last year, after a lot of success with Ryan locally, we decided to enter him in the Australian Kart Championships and this took us all over Australia to race and it put Ryan up against the best drivers in Australia. In his first year, Ryan won the Australian Kart Championships and in doing so became the youngest winner in the sports history” Ryan’s father - Scott Tomsett, told the Oran Park Gazette. “This year, Ryan backed it up and won the Australian Kart Championship again to become a two-time Australian Karting Champion. Now he is the youngest in history to win the Australian Championships twice” added Scott. Ryan took up the sport of karting when he was 7 years old, after watching his older brother Adam race karts. After taking him to Ultimate Karting Sydney in Smeaton Grange to have a go and have some fun, his family found he was driving great straight away, getting better and better very quickly. Abigail’s Urgent Need for a Wheelchair Accessible Van
Abigail Chan | Image: Agnes Rehak
As any parents, Joseph and Agatha Chan wish to provide the best opportunities for both of their children. Unfortunately, Abigail their 11-yearold daughter has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type II, a genetic condition causing her muscles to gradually waste away. Abigail Chan needs 24/7 care and support and her Mum is her full-time carer. With one income, they could never afford a wheelchair accessible van. Taking Abigail to her multiple doctors’ appointments or various activities has usually meant her Mum having to carry Abigail plus her 22kg manual chair in and out of their old Subaru wagon, as her electric wheelchair does not fit. “As Abigail grows, it is getting harder and I’m scared I’ll drop her or worsen her condition while bending her. Alarmingly, over the last six months Abigail's spine curvature has deteriorated from 40° to 65°, so she is now on the waiting list for spinal surgery. She is a bright Year 6 student, who loves English and Art and is very talented in chess and she was the school champion last year! But without the appropriate van, she has had to give up most of her favourite activities and is now mainly home bound” said Agatha Chan, Abigail’s Mum. Once in a lifetime she is entitled to funds to make a van wheelchair accessible, but sadly the family cannot afford to purchase a van. They were advised that a VW Multivan or a modified VW Transporter would be the most appropriate for Abigail, costing approximately $50,000 to $55,000. “We are inexperienced in fundraising, but have set up a site www. youcaring.com/abigailvan, where we have raised about $5,000 so far. Abigail's school, Oran Park Public School have been amazing and they raised another $6,000, so we currently have $11,000. The longer it takes to raise the remaining amount, the more Abigail is missing out on the quality of life” explained Agatha. The family hope the local community can somehow help raise the remaining funds, either through donating on www.youcaring.com/ abigailvan or connecting them with potential businesses that might sponsor Abigail's van to help her wish, to live a normal life, come true.

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK
Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@ newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park
Humility and Parenting Well, this one should be easy! It’s interesting as a parent myself to consider how humility intersects with parenting. At our best we parent from a place of love and care and patience. Of course, life (and our parenting) isn’t always like that. In the Bible a leader called Paul writes to the kids in one of the first Churches like this, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” He’s quoting one of the original ten commandments and encouraging children that obedience and honour are their responsibility. Great, I hear you say! I find it helpful to be reminded that our kids aren’t just to be ‘best buddies’ with their parents and that there is a reasonable expectation of listening and respect that are supposed to define this key building block of our society. But what about parents? Here’s the very next sentence, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” I’m sure Paul knew about exasperating mothers too(!), but he chose to write to Dads specifically because I suspect this is a more particular challenge for us. ‘Exasperating’ is that sense of baiting or pushing our kids, going one step further than is necessary and ultimately causing our kids to falter in their respect and obedience because we’re acting in a way unworthy of it. You’ll have noted too, that instead of this behaviour dads (and mums) are encouraged to bring their children up to know God. It will be there that they’ll be reminded to obey! And, where they will in turn learn humility, love, service, and care for others, because they’re following the model of Jesus their King. At NewLife we’d love to help you with that instruction - so we run NewLifeKids every Sunday alongside our regular service. Humility and parenting.. A great place to start, and a great pattern to continue.

Harrington Estates: Lady Mary Fairfax's Vision Lives On It is with extreme sadness that Harrington Estates mourns the passing of Lady Mary Fairfax. In a statement, Lady Mary’s family said she died peacefully at her family home last month. While we are incredibly sad, we take a moment to celebrate the extraordinary life led by this inspiring lady. Harrington Park was born of the vision of Lady Mary and Sir Warwick Fairfax. It was based on their wish to create genuinely thriving neighbourhoods, as well as a strong desire to give back to the community. Lady Mary Fairfax’s connection to the Macarthur region links back to the early 1940s when Sir Warwick acquired a substantial parcel of land, now known as Harrington Park. Harrington Park and Harrington Grove are both highly awarded estates which have been lauded for retaining the natural bushland and setting the benchmark for sustainable developments. Harrington Estates managing director, Mr. Terry Goldacre said “It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Lady Mary Fairfax. It’s with incredible pride that we have been able to build on the vision that Lady Fairfax had for the communities we develop, and I know she was particularly thrilled with the awards that Harrington Grove and Harrington Park have won. We will continue to honour her legacy and look forward to continuing to build on this vision with the delivery of Catherine Park Estate,” concluded Mr Goldacre. Source: Harrington Estates. Ever Wanted to Join the Rural Fire Brigade? Cobbitty Rural Fire Brigade was formed in 1954, 63 years ago, and has grown to become an integral part of the rural fire brigade in the Camden region and local area. “I joined the brigade in 1968. We now have 14 active members in the Cobbitty Rural Fire Brigade. The satisfaction of being a volunteer is great. Getting involved in helping the community stay safe, whether it’s fighting fires or being involved in flood rescues, plus the friendships that you make with people from all walks of life is what I enjoy the most” said Captain Peter Rabbidge from Cobbitty Rural Fire Brigade. Members of the local Rural Fire Brigade participate in a range of activities including regular training and opportunities to specialise in skills such as chainsaw operation, off road driving and leadership skills. “Part of our job is to also educate the community about fire awareness. How to prepare for the fire season and having a plan in place in the event of a fire approaching your home, whilst keeping your family and animals safe is important” said Captain Rabbidge. Cobbitty Rural Fire Brigade would like to call on members of the local community who would be interested in joining their team. “If you are 18 years or older, male or female and would like to get involved, we would be happy to welcome you. Call into the Fire Station in Cobbitty on any Sunday morning around 8.30 and say g’day. You can also phone me on 0407 078075 and make a time to catch up” added Captain Rabbidge. For more information about the Cobbitty Rural Fire Brigade, you can visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CobbittyRFS.

Recently I revisited a resource that was produced a few years ago by the Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay that offered the following reflection: “Pope Francis acknowledges the challenges posed by today’s extraordinary advances in human communications which is like stepping into “a flood tide” of opportunities to mingle and encounter, embrace and support one another. While chaotic, these greater possibilities for communication can become “a genuine experience of fraternity, a caravan of solidarity, a sacred pilgrimage”. At the same time we must resist the temptation to isolate ourselves, to escape and take refuge in the comfort of our privacy, desiring interpersonal relationships provided by sophisticated equipment, by screens and systems which can be switched on and off on command. The Gospel tells us constantly to run the risk of a face-to-face encounter with others, with their

physical presence which challenges us, with their pains and pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and continuous interaction” As the suburbs in which we live and work continue to exponentially grow – and more and more homes are built and businesses are opened - I think no matter what our background or way of life we are called (both individually and collectively) not to allow ourselves to be robbed of community. Let us not be people who seek “to hide or keep apart from others, or quietly flit from one place or task to another, without creating deep and stable bonds.” As Pope Francis once said: the Good News means “learning to find Jesus in the faces of others, in their voices, in their pleas” Fr David Catterall

racing there for about six months, they then decided to get Ryan an outdoor kart and start racing. “Ryan won his first five races before going on to win a lot of events around New South Wales. He had a lot of natural talent as he was doing things on the track that no one had taught him before, so we decided to continue with his racing and it became his passion. He just loves to race” explained Scott. “I enjoy the speed of the karts, the overtaking and winning” said Ryan. Ryan’s goals in karting are to keep improving and winning every year. Scott plans to take him to Europe next year to race against the world’s best drivers. When he gets older, Ryan’s dream is to one day race in Formula One. Ryan Tomsett | Image: Pace Images

Colour at the Park
Oran Park Public School was a vision of colour and creative flair when they recently held their first ever Art Exhibition, branded as ‘Colour at the Park’. Deputy Principal, Ms Jodie Bland said, “the vision was to take the school community on a journey through our beautiful school, showcasing our amazing students' talents”. Artworks on display included 2D pieces, sculptures, interactive displays, dioramas, pottery, garden displays, origami, cross stitch, mobiles, Ojo de Dios and canvasses all created by the students. Leading up to the exhibition, each student was filmed before, during or after their creative process and a short clip could be accessed by parents and caregivers on the night. This created an engaging experience for our community members and students.
Each class also collaborated to create a whole class canvas. These canvasses formed part of a silent auction. Thank you to our wonderful community for being a part of this creative journey. The night was a huge success with students feeling they were a part of something amazing giving them the confidence to continue with their creative arts journey. “The night was spectacular and the amount of families that came to experience it made it all worthwhile! Parents loved viewing the videos and interacting with various artworks. The memories made will stay with our students for years to come and that's why we do it, for the students” explained staff member Bianca Malpass. What a great way to promote school talent, get the community together and showcase what the future represents for our next generation. We look forward to seeing the exhibition and the creative master pieces produced next year.

Dream Year for Gabrielle Gabrielle Plain (Harrington Park Scorpions Softball Club) has capped off a dream year in the sport with an Athletic Scholarship with the University of Washington in Seattle in the US, after representing Australia in the Under 19’s Softball Team. “I will be attending the University of Washington in Seattle. There was a large process that my family and I pushed through within a very short period of time to be selected for the team. We decided to go through a sporting organisation called NCSA that helps athletes attempting to break into the collegiate sports” explained Gabrielle. “After being in contact with the coaches via phone calls, emails and Skype, I was able to have the chance to be seen by them when I played in the Australian School Girls team touring Hawaii last year. From there I was offered an Athletic Scholarship” she said. Gabrielle represented the green and gold in Florida this year with the Australian Under 19’s Team, describing it as a tremendous experience that she was very proud to be a part of. The team fought hard in the tournament, right down to the final game. “Although we may not have gotten the result we ultimately desired, we all came out with friendships within our country and from others and a great sense of pride at having represented our country” added Gabrielle. The Harrington Park Scorpions Softball Club can lay claim to three players, Peter Ward and Harri Peters along Gabrielle, who have recently represented Australia, with a further two, Chris Plain and Josh Bond, selected in the Aussie Squad for 2017. Gabrielle believes the successful local club has been a great platform for this, “I believe many talented softball players have come from the Scorpions due to their own perseverance as well as the opportunity to improve themselves with pretty equal standings throughout the club season. Scorpions try to get as many people on the field throughout the year as they possibly can, as the club season is not only about improving but mainly having fun with friends”. Gabrielle hopes to gain as much experience and knowledge from the sport while playing in one of the greatest softball competitions in the world, whilst also keeping her eyes on making the next Australian team in the future. “I hope to get the most that I possibly can out of my time in America and better myself to be the best I can be” she ended. Breaking Down Bullying We are all familiar with the term ‘bullying’ but what actual constitutes bullying? And what happens when you feel your child is being bullied or being a bully and you are not there to deal with the situation? How can you support your child through this time? Firstly, the NSW Department of Education (2017) defines bullying as “repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological behaviour that is harmful and involves the misuse of power by an individual or group towards one or more persons. Cyberbullying refers to bullying through information and communication technologies. Bullying can involve humiliation, domination, intimidation, victimisation and all forms of harassment including that based on sex, race, disability, homosexuality or transgender. Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved including bystanders.” It is important to note that single incidents or fights between equals are not defined as bullying. Children who are being bullied can often show signs like not wanting to go to school or changing their route to school. They may have a decline in marks or their belongings may be damaged or missing. Mood swings, anxiety and frequent emotional outbursts may also be a sign; as are changes in their eating and sleeping patterns. If you notice these signs, it may not be due to bullying, but it is important to discuss what the cause is with your child and show them your support and understanding. If your child is in a bullying situation it is important to report all instances to the school when they occur. Contact the school to make an appointment and work with them. The school staff and Principal have a duty of care to all students and the more information they receive in a timely manner, the more effectively they can resolve incidents. Local Papers Are Alive
In this age of digital discovery and electronic everything, we might be wondering what the future holds for the printed word. Will books, magazines and newspapers become obsolete giving way to their illuminated offspring? And what about community news publications? Will they die off? Here at the District Gazette, we know that newspapers are very much alive! According to research done by Gnosis at Georgetown University, ‘local newspapers play a complex role in communities, they embrace a civic life for the community’s citizens’. Local newspapers bring us together by connecting deeply with the community. They differ from larger papers because the stories are about our immediate neighbours and friends and local businesses. They provide a way to connect us all together to celebrate our wins, band together to help each other, provide much needed information about activities in the area, support local people running local businesses and most importantly, make us feel good about our neighbourhood. Not only do we regularly receive emails and phone calls, but
face to face feedback from readers who often stop us when we are out and about in the community. They love the local stories and content; mixed with the knowledge that they can reach out to local businesses. As a reporter for the Gazette, I enjoy getting out there, meeting folks, having a cuppa and finding out what’s going on in the area. Belinda Sanders has edited and owned the District Gazette since 2012. “We share stories of local people doing local things. We have countless amounts of readers contacting us to share their stories; stories of their friends and neighbours” said Belinda. “You know when you pick up a local community newspaper you get a real feel for the community you are in. A direct reflection; an up close and personal experience”. The advertising value for local businesses is proven by the fact that up to 70% of our current advertisers are past and longstanding advertisers, returning month after month with many for years. Belinda is quick to point out that “of course there is more to advertising than just putting an advertisement in. It’s about your brand, your reputation, your call to action”. Advertising in the District Gazette puts your business exactly where it needs to be; right in front of the community that are your potential customers! It’s a great way to build a relationship with your community. We'd love to hear from you if you have anything you think our community might be interested in reading about. Everybody’s got a story to tell or a hand to lend. We also buy and shop local. Local businesses are the lifeblood of our community. The benefits and feedback we receive show that community news is very much alive and well! The District Gazette is proud to support locals. We Live, Love Local. Article + Image: Lisa Finn-Powell

Executive of the Year Finalist
BIZ MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Sharon Ruddleston | CPM | Business Strategy | Marketing & Growth Specialist | 0418-861-562 This past month I’ve fielded calls about how to manage risk, and its many shades of grey, more so than any other business related issue. The business owners I’ve spoken to were all, at some stage, romanticised by the idea of entrepreneurship - and are now facing the reality that there is nothing romantic about it. So, let’s get real! When you take control of your own destiny to start your own business, you inevitably take on massive risk and responsibility. There’s a lot at stake. Actions have consequences. Decisions need to be made. There’s no room for emotional attachment or egotism. While we’re all conditioned to the connection between risk and reward, remember the old saying - no pain, no gain? We prefer to bury our head in the sand rather than acknowledge the more common connection between risk and loss and this is where the problem arises. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with risk taking, quite the contrary. All too often, we are too risk-averse for our own good. The problem is, we can’t manage what we refuse to acknowledge. The game of managing risk is about making informed decisions that minimise and result in ‘calculated risk’. There are lots of shades of grey on the spectrum between the black and white of extreme risk aversion and throwing caution to the wind. When you ultimately make the decision to start your own business, get one thing straight. The game is certainly not to take on massive risk then bury your head in the sand hoping everything will work out. The game is to minimise risk by making informed decisions based on all available facts. Failure may be a fact of business life but it is not what the game is about. You play to win, not lose. You play to succeed, not fail. The latest ABS stats reflect more than 60% of small businesses in Sydney lose the game within their first 3 years. The common underlying theme – poor planning. My advice – invest in a rock-solid game plan.

Whether you’re a business owner, a manager for a local company or even a 5th grade student, there is no denying everyone likes to be acknowledged and praised for doing a good job. It could come in the form of a pat on the back, a yearly bonus or even an award. It's no surprise that when local Harrington Park resident Caitlin Pearson woke one morning to the exciting news that she had been nominated as a finalist in the upcoming CEO Magazine Executive of the Year Awards in the ‘Not for Profit Executive of the Year’ category; she was ecstatic to say the least. As General Manager of Marketing and Engagement at Macarthur Disability Services (MDS), a not for profit organisation providing a vast array of supports and services to people with a disability across the Macarthur, Wollondilly and Liverpool, her role is to oversee anything related to the promotion of MDS including digital and print marketing, event coordination, fundraising, communications and government and media liaisons. Caitlin explains that she has a real soft spot for the event coordination part of her role, as she gets to organise some truly awesome experiences for their participants. The application process required a submission about the work Caitlin carries out, specifically focusing on key projects and challenges over the past year, particularly the current challenges service providers are experiencing with the rollout of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). Clearly, not only a high achiever when it comes to conducting herself within her work space, but a genuinely kind and giving soul who is constantly networking, learning and offering her experience and knowledge to everyone she meets. When we asked Caitlin what it would mean to her if she took out the prestigious award she said, “winning an award like this would be amazing! It would be such an incredible acknowledgment of the work my team does. I am very proud of what our little trio has produced in the past 12 months working with limited budgets, in a sector that is undergoing unprecedented change”. Caitlin has also been very vocal to acknowledge and thank all her friends and mentors she has in the local business community who continually support her, MDS, and the work that she does. We wish Caitlin all the best when she attends the awards night on the 15th November at the Crown Casino in Melbourne. Caitlin Pearson | Image Supplied by Caitlin Pearson. Article: Renee Garcia
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Paws for a Second
DAGS Electrical
Local electrical business, DAGS Electrical, pride themselves on serving the community the best they can through their experience, since starting in 2000, right through to their exceptional customer service and personal touch. Owner Rick Jenkins, started the business doing antennas, before branching out into AV gear and mounting televisions. In 2012, he obtained his electrical licence, followed by an Advanced Diploma in Renewable Energies. Last year, the local business also obtained their split system air conditioning licence, allowing them to install air conditioners. Rick is joined by apprentice Jackson, who brings local knowledge to the team. DAGS Electrical also have an AV team of two and a further four contractors for their bigger jobs. “Our point of difference is our personal service. Most of our customers we have had for many years. Personally, I remember the people and their homes when I attend jobs. Our level of experience means that once our customers have got DAGS, they tend to have other things that we can help them with too” explained Rick. “Our goals are to just keep doing what we’re doing. We don’t want to grow massively and forget our customers. We want to continue looking after our existing customers, get new customers and to have a good stable business. Having a fairly small number of customers that are looked after really well is very important to us” added Rick.

WHAT’S COOKING
Oran Park Probus Club
Easy Thai Green Curry Beef Skewers
A small group of members toured the ABC Studios in Ultimo at the end of August and were provided with some interesting insights on the studios where the sets of Four Corners, Media Watch, Lateline, Live News and Q&A are televised and broadcast to the ABC Network. The middle of September saw a trip to the Bowral Tulip Festival – a truly wonderful display of massed tulips in many colours. A group is attending The Australian Tenors-the Good Old Days Concert at the Sydney Town Hall in October. A lunch at the Oran Park Café and meeting for coffee and chat enabled members to socialise. The club has 108 members with room for more. The Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 10.00 am at NewLife Anglican Church, corner Central Avenue and Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park. If you would like more information about our club then contact the secretary: Helen Duhs at phduhs@ gmail.com or 041508828.

The Staples Bag
The Staples Bag Program is a combined initiative between Macarthur Diversity Services Initiative (MDSI) and Settlement Services International to ease the financial strain in relation to the family budget when it comes to supplying good and healthy meals. Affording the weekly grocery shop is becoming increasingly difficult for many Macarthur families. The rise in electricity prices and other utilities is a burden on the family budget and makes buying the necessities that much more difficult. The community organisation runs a fortnightly ‘Staples Bag’ pop-up shop where residents can purchase groceries for $20 (standard), $30 (family) or $15 (vegetarian). The initiative is aimed at giving people back their dignity. Good fresh food is a human right, it’s not a commodity that we can just pass over. The idea is that people don't need to be judged any more than they already are for being involved in programs like Centrelink and social housing. The principal aim of The Staples Bag partnership is to create options for anyone who's on a low income to actually buy food that is healthy and affordable. It is not a hand-out but a “leg up.” A recent event last month, attracted about 80 people. People that have attended and taken advantage of the program are amazed that it’s good stuff they’re getting. They think because it’s cheap it’s going to be poor quality, but that’s not the case. The program is run every 2nd Wednesday from 1pm to 2.30pm at the “Blue House” 127 Dumaresq Street in Campbelltown. It is run by staff and volunteers from Macarthur Diversity Services Inc and Settlement Services International. The next Staples Bag pop-up shop will be held on Wednesday 4 October 2017 and every 2nd Wednesday after that. To find out more search The Staples Bag on Facebook or call 4627 1188. Lily Toxicity And Cats Attention all cat owners! Did you know that lilies are toxic to cats? Many common varieties of lilies including the Easter lily (pictured), Asiatic lily, stargazer lily, tiger lily, and white lily are toxic to cats when ingested. Lilies belonging to the Lilium or Hemerocallis genera contain toxins that can permanently damage your cat’s kidneys. All parts of the lily plant are dangerous, be it the stems, leaves, petals or pollen. Even the tiniest exposure, such as if your cat were to lick some pollen off its fur, can make it very sick. Some cats have died just by eating two leaves or part of a single flower. If ingestion occurs, cats will be affected in a very short time frame. The first signs of poisoning can happen within one to three hours after ingestion. Be sure to look out for: • Salivation • Vomiting • Loss of appetite • Depression If you suspect potential exposure, take your cat to the Veterinarian as soon as possible. It is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate and aggressive Veterinary treatment. If left untreated, the condition can be fatal within a few days of exposure. As there is no antidote for lily toxicity and cats that survive can suffer from irreversible kidney damage, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Cat owners should avoid keeping lilies in the house

altogether and inspect bouquets for any toxic lilies. Cat-friendly alternatives include roses, orchids, daisies, and violets. Many cat owners are unaware of the dangers of lily toxicity so please help spread the word.
