Recycling Drop Off Returns for Camden Residents have the chance to get rid of their extra recycling waste with Council’s Recycling Drop Off event returning. The quarterly event, which was postponed earlier this year due to COVID-19, will be held on Saturday 10 October, 9am-3pm at Council’s Works Depot located at 5 Millwood Avenue, Narellan. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the event was ideal for new residents moving into their homes with extra recycling waste. “Council’s Recycling Drop Off events give the community a chance to do the right thing for the environment and recycle in the best way possible,” Cr Fedeli said. “While I have noticed many people either moving into the area or even fixing things up in their own homes over the past six months, I am sure this Recycling Drop Off has come at the perfect time. “For the safety of both the community and staff, residents are asked to remain in their cars when they attend Council’s Works Depot.” Items that will be accepted on the day include: • Bulky cardboard; • Paper; • Plastic bottles and containers; • Glass bottles; • Cans; and • Polystyrene. Council requests residents who answer ‘yes’ to any of the following questions NOT attend the event: • Have you or an immediate family member: • Been in close contact with anyone who has returned to Australia or any other high-risk areas in the last 14 days; • Been confirmed as having Coronavirus and are required to self-isolate; or • Been experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19? For the health and safety of our residents and staff this event may be postponed at short notice due to COVID-19. Please monitor Council’s website and Facebook page closer to the event. For more information on the Recycling Drop Off, go to camden.nsw.gov.au and search ‘Recycling Drop Off’. w

The Queen of Treats She’s just celebrated the first birthday of her business, The Good Boy Bakery and already Harrington Park’s Michelle Purgar has a long list of our four-legged friends who can’t get enough of her pet treats. Michelle makes and sells homemade baked goods for dogs, consisting of personalized biscuits which are baked and stamped with the individual dog’s name, birthday cakes as well as dry treats like chicken jerky. “I started up The Good Boy Bakery as I wanted to be able to provide my own dogs with a healthier alternative to store bought treats. We used to spend a lot of time having to read the packaging on dog treats to check the sodium and fat contents, to make sure we were only giving the boys the treats that were good for them. So, I decided to give making my own treats a go, as I knew what would be going into them and could ensure I only used healthy, fresh ingredients without the added preservatives” said Michelle to the Oran Park Gazette. Before she knew it, her two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Sam and Tommy were hooked, and the Good Boy Bakery was born. “They enjoyed my baked goods so much. I had received such great feedback from even the fussiest of dogs, so I then decided to start the business to be able to share my goodies with a wider audience” she smiled. Michelle believes the secret is in the ingredients she uses to make the treats. Afterall, a healthy dog is a happy dog. “It’s important to use healthy ingredients and to be weary of what you’re feeding your dog. They don't know the difference between good and bad, so it's up to us to provide them with treats that will help them stay healthy and happy and with us for the longest time. In most of our treats, we use pumpkin which is rich in fibre and good for their little tummies, aiding digestive health” explained Michelle. Her most popular products sold are the birthday cakes. Dogs love them and they can’t stop wagging their tails for more! For more information about Michelle’s pet treats, find the business on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ thegooodboybakery.

Mayor and Deputy Mayor Elected

Camden Councillors Theresa Fedeli and Rob Mills have been re-elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively at last month’s ordinary Council meeting. Due to COVID-19, the regular 2020 ordinary local government elections were postponed until 4 September 2021. However, as the current Camden Mayoral terms concluded last month, Council held an election for Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Mayor Fedeli said she was honoured to be re-elected as the Mayor of Camden for a second term and was looking forward to the year ahead. “I am excited to be working with my fellow Councillors during such an important time in the history of the Camden area, as we continue to experience remarkable growth as the fastest growing Council in Australia” Mayor Fedeli said. “It has been an honour to be the Mayor of such a beautiful area full of fantastic families calling it home, and I am focused more than ever on continuing our work to provide the best services, infrastructure and facilities to support the wellbeing of our entire community. “This year in particular has been challenging with the COVID-19 pandemic as well as fires and floods, however it has been great to see everyone come together and support each other in a time of need which is also what makes this area so great. “I would like to congratulate Cr Mills on being re-elected Deputy Mayor and thank my fellow councillors for the opportunity to continue serving as Mayor. I look forward to working with them all for the benefit of the community in the year ahead”. Deputy Mayor, Cr Mills said he was very excited to reelected to the role. “It is an honour to be the Deputy Mayor of Camden and I look forward to continue helping our community with a range of initiatives over the next year” Cr Mills said. “Together with my fellow Councillors, I believe we can achieve some great results”. Mayor Fedeli and Deputy Mayor Mills will serve 12 months in their positions, until the September 2021 Council Election. For more information on last night’s election, visit camden.nsw.gov.au.

The Men’s Table Launch in Camden

The Men’s Table have launched in Camden, providing a new way to support men in our local community. They are a charity dedicated to creating a unique environment for men to share openly about their lives and give them a sense of belonging, community, peer support and camaraderie that is lacking for many men, even for those with a close group of friends. 2020 has been a year that no one could have predicted, a year of struggle, isolation, and doubt for many men across Australia. The Men’s Table are here to help. The Men’s Table had their humble beginnings when 12 men got together for a chat and a bite to eat in 2011. Instantly benefiting from the judgement-free support and the informal way in which they could talk honestly about their lives, and their feelings, they knew they were on to something special. Fast-forward eight years, and David Pointon and Ben Hughes decided that the formula they had at their Table (MT1) was too powerful to keep to themselves. From the beginning of 2019, 20 Tables have formed around Australia. They are now on a mission to bring The Men’s Table to Aussie blokes in every corner of our country. It takes just two people willing to meet monthly to start a Table, there is no cost (apart from your food and a drink) and each group is capped at 12 enduring members so that the bonds between the group can grow over time. We live in a connected world, but increasingly more and more men feel disconnected and segregated. Having heard some life-changing stories of bonding at their Tables, with the challenges related to 2020 they expect that more and more men will need to expand their support network. 95% of men who are part of current Tables said that The Men’s Table was a safe space to share. They are more committed than ever to give as many men as possible the chance to benefit from being part of a Table. For more information about The Men’s Table, visit www.themenstable.org. r

Is your dog scratching? If you notice your dog is excessively scratching, licking or rubbing, or you can see some red patches on the skin, hair loss or bad skin odour, then it might be time to come and see us! It sounds like your dog may have a skin condition. Damaged or irritated skin can be very common in dogs, but nonetheless distressing for both you and your dog. Typically, during this time with the change in environment, we see dogs come in with Atopic Dermatitis, which is an allergic skin disease that causes itching. The allergens that cause Atopy include pollens (from grasses, weeds and trees), dust mites and moulds. It is one of the most common skin allergies in dogs and cats, along with fleas. Atopic Dermatitis can also develop into a year-round problem, and not just seasonal. It’s important to remember that while we see dogs with Atopic Dermatitis, other common causes are food allergies, parasites/fleas and infections. There are a variety of different treatments for skin conditions from topical shampoos, creams and lotions, antihistamines, flea control and diet. What you feed your dog plays an important role in supporting skin health. For dogs with suspected environmental allergies and skin conditions, we recommend Hill’s Prescription Diet Derm Defense which helps reduce the reactions to the environmental allergens. They also have high levels of essential fatty acids to support healthy skin and a shiny coat. If it is confirmed that your dog has food allergies, Hill’s Prescription Diet z/d and d/d are ranges that contain ingredients that minimize the risk of allergic responses. It’s important to have a consultation with your vet to see what the best food option is based on their analysis, and to find out the best approach to introducing new food to their diet. www.macarthurvet.com.au

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

Local Businesswoman Finalist in 2020 Altitude Awards

All Feelings are OK

Some parents tell their children that strong emotions such as anger, frustration, and excitement are unacceptable. Strong emotions are OK. They are normal and all of us will feel them at some time in the day or week. Strong emotions are quite motivating and energising. Think about how much can get done when people get angry (for example, Vincent Lingiari, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela). So, all feelings are OK, but it is what we do with our emotions that matters. It is not OK to hurt someone else’s feelings or physically hurt others when we are angry. It is also not OK to blame someone else for how we feel, for example “you make me feel angry”. You are having the emotion and taking responsible for how you feel gives you the power to change it. Blame is a dead-end street – it stops you from feeling that you can take the initiative to make changes. The components of emotional regulation include (for children aged over 4 years): • Acknowledging where you are at – Feel it to heal it. • Labelling your feelings – Name it to tame it. • Doing something to calm down – Deep breathing, counting backwards, telling yourself to ‘calm down’, thinking happy thoughts. • When you are calm, understanding what was going on for you. When the child is calm and ready to talk, calmly discuss the behaviours you observed and what was said. Ask the child what might have sparked the outburst. What was s/he feeling? Google ‘feelings chart’ and ‘anger iceberg’ for some cool visuals. And finally, what could the child do better next time when s/ he is having big feelings? All disruptions are opportunities for repair and learning. Parenting is an opportunity to coach a child in ways that make them better humans. As parents, we also have to role model the skills we want our children to learn, so emotional regulation starts with us. r

Local businesswoman and our resident education expert, Sara Drebber, is a finalist in the 2020 Altitude Awards for her second consecutive year. This time she is a finalist for the Revolutionary and Best Professional Service Business Categories. These categories are for outstanding service-based professional businesses and groundbreakers in their industry throughout their career, respectively. Sara is a passionate educator, consultant, writer, and mother of three, whose award-winning local business, edUcatered, has flourished under her guidance since its inception 3 years ago. With almost 20 years’ experience working in education, Sara brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role as an educational consultant and tutor. It has always been her aim to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which children can develop and learn, so the finalist awards are just a bonus to the joy of supporting learning of those using her service. “It is an honour to be included in both a business excellence and leadership category this year. I am grateful to have this opportunity to be recognised for my hard-work and that of my team, especially given the challenges we have faced this year with the pandemic” Sara explained. The Altitude Awards are jointly presented by Women with Altitude and The Men’s Altitude Network. They are held annually to provide an opportunity to acknowledge those who have made outstanding contributions as business owners, volunteers, employees, creative thinkers, and leaders. Women with Altitude founder, Andrea Turner-Boys said, “We look forward to this time each year when we celebrate and champion the achievements of individuals and teams from our regions. Each finalist has been chosen for their outstanding contributions in their field and will be presented with their finalist certificates at regional networking events across NSW and the ACT, throughout the month of September”. An independent judging panel adjudicates the awards, and winners of each category will be announced at a gala awards ball on Saturday 7th November at the LCC Event Centre in Prestons NSW. r

Oran Park Probus Club Here is some good news for Oran Park Probus Club. We will be holding our first face to face meeting for seven months, on October 6! Our usual venue at the NewLife Church at Oran Park is not available at this time, so we have arranged to hold our October meeting at Wests Lakeside. Strict COVID safe rules will apply. Perhaps some of our members will not be ready to emerge from their isolation bubbles and that is understandable. For those members who attend, the format will be a little different and certainly no standing around in close groups chatting! During the pandemic, we have been holding monthly Zoom meetings at which there has been a variety of speakers. On October 6, there will be a speaker, face to face, from the Australian Maritime Museum. Oran Park Probus Club usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, but in November it will be the second Tuesday, to avoid Melbourne Cup Day. Probus is a social club for retired or semi-retired people in the community, aiming to promote friendship, fellowship, and fun. Anyone interested in finding out more about Probus or Oran Park Probus Club, please call 0410 758755 or email oranpark@probusclubs.com.au. FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

I know for the faith community of St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish that I am privileged to serve and lead. We are all looking forward to a change in restrictions, founded on medical advice, that will allow us to enter a 'new normal' and to move into a ‘2nd phase’ of re-entry. This phase isn't about returning the parish to the weekend church program we had prior to the start of this global pandemic. It will see the re-introduction of the celebration of 5pm Saturday Vigil Mass (that will continue to be livestreamed) and 10am Sunday Mass at our Southern Mass Centre at Oran Park and 8am Sunday Mass at our Northern Mass Centre at Leppington. These Masses will be open to a limited number of attendees, who (as is already happening with our current 9.30am Sunday Mass at Leppington) will need to pre-register, wear a facial covering, and follow the requirements of social distancing. The start date for this '2nd phase' will be based on the completion date of our Southern Mass Centre Extension Project - that we envisage will now be around early to mid-October. More news about this '2nd phase' - including the way to sign up for these Masses, and to assist in ministries that will be needed to make these Masses possible will be announced on our Parish Facebook page: facebook.com/ oranparkparish. Holding Out Hope

I was rocked the other day by the unexpected death of a friend’s child. Loved, cherished, cared for and now.. gone. What can you say? This isn’t a ‘Five steps to hope’ kind of article. The Christian hope arises from the story of Jesus. The Bible says: “Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death”. The Christian believes that, rather than standing divorced or distant from pain, God entered into it. Jesus lived among us. He knew the joys and sorrows of life. He knew the betrayal of close friends. He feed the hungry. He worked for decades in the family trade with His dad. And ultimately, He died. But Jesus’s death wasn’t the end. The incredible reality is that this one death has the ability to change every death. We believe Jesus was raised on Easter Sunday and that His tomb is empty. Jesus’s resurrection defeated death in that dusty tomb. We believe that those who trust in Him now will join Him in eternal life beyond the grave. This great confidence transforms the sorrow of my friend - who believes it, and for me as I seek to comfort him. Elsewhere the Bible says, “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.” There is hope today, bound up in joining our story to the even better story of Jesus. A hope bigger than death and stronger than the grave. We’d love to share it with you. r

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST I’m not going to lie, I’m very excited about the sunshine and the beautiful Spring days we’ve been enjoying of late. Despite our cautious ‘covid’ ways - it’s refreshing to see people out and about enjoying the sunshine, supporting local businesses while adhering to safe guidelines and recommendations. Like many, I’ve spent a few days in the garden - while not a ‘green’ thumb there’s something to be said about a neat and inviting garden, especially at this time of the year. I could sit in the garden, eyes closed listening to nature and it’s surrounds for hours. It’s a great way to ‘reset’ and ‘refocus’. And so is reading this latest edition of ‘Your Community News’. We have plenty of light reading this month, why not find yourself a nice spot in the garden with a cuppa and your favourite local paper! ‘Yesterday is heavy, learn to put it down’. Enjoy Your Community News.
