Spring With a Song! Fisher's Ghost Youth Orchestra (FGYO) is kicking off Spring in style with a quirkily named family concert, 'Expialidocious’. "FGYO loves having a bit of fun and bringing a smile to the face of everyone in the audience" said violinist Anabella Cabrera-Yee. "The pieces we've been rehearsing for this concert are from musicals old and new, as well as some favourites by well-known composers like Haydn and Bach, so there really is something for everyone. I'm sure we'll have everyone smiling and humming along in no time!" A local Harrington Park resident, Anabella first picked up the violin eight years ago. Her talent and dedication has led her to being promoted to the position of Concertmaster in 2018. "It's just such a huge honour. There are so many talented violinists in the area, all with their eye on this spot" she said. The Concertmaster sits right at the front of the orchestra and is responsible for the smooth preparation of the whole group, from making sure everyone is in their positions before the conductor takes the stage, to helping everyone tune properly. FGYO’s great teamwork means that Anabella’s job is relatively easy. She has had so many memorable experiences with FGYO, such as playing at Kiddies Cushion Concerts, at local schools and hospitals, and at festivals like Christmas in Narellan, Live & Local Camden and the Festival of Fisher's Ghost. Anabella also enjoys the regular public performances that FGYO hosts for the community. “My favourite concert so far has been 'Escape to Imagination', which we did in August last year” explained Anabella. "We played music inspired by literature, from Harry Potter to Shakespeare, and it was just in time for Book Anabella (L) at the Toddler Time concert at Campbelltown Arts Centre in March | Image Supplied by FGYO

Here Come the Blue and Greens!
It’s that time of year again for the Oran Park Cricket Club, where the willow bats and leather balls are brought out and the zinc cream and wide brimmed hats are put on to prepare for another exciting season of cricket. The popular local club, which competes in the Camden District Cricket Association, will begin Season 2018/19 this month on September 22 and are looking to improve on last year’s impressive season. With six senior teams and five junior teams taking the pitch last season, the proud club had many highlights. Individually, this included five players and one coach who were selected to represent the district at a higher level. From a club level, the 2nd Grade team was named ‘2017/18 Premiers’ after an epic final series that went down to the wire in both matches. The club was also the first in the district to offer coloured clothing for their junior teams to play in. “I'm looking forward to seeing our Under 10’s and Under 11’s compete at a higher standard this season. Some of these kids have played 2 or 3 seasons at a level where they were physically out of their depth, plugging gaps so the club could fill teams. Now we have a good group of 15 to 20 kids who can compete successfully in their right age group for the next 5 or 6 seasons, keeping the club in good stead” said Karl Bennett, President of Oran Park Cricket Club. “On top of this, we will compete in the Under 16’s competition for the first time. This competition is played on turf and will be a great experience for all the players as their junior cricketing days will be over at seasons end” added Karl. To register for the club, visit http://oranpark.nsw.cricket.com.au. Playing and sponsorship enquiries can be emailed to secretary@ oranparkcricket.com.au. Oran Park Probus Club Our guest speaker last month was most interesting. She was a member of the Campbelltown Embroiderers’ Guild and illustrated her talk with fine examples of her own work. The men were not left out as she talked about the benefits of crafting, no matter what the craft. The club offers a variety of activities including day trips to interesting places, longer trips of 5-10 days, craft afternoons, coffee mornings and lunches. These activities enable members to meet new people and enjoy time together. If you are interested in finding out more about our club come along as a visitor to see how we operate. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month (excluding January) at 10.00 am at NewLife Anglican Church, corner Central Avenue and Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park. The next meeting is 4 September. If you would like more information about our club then contact the secretary, Helen Duhs at phduhs@gmail.com or 0412508828. Presentation to Guest Speaker August 2018 | Image Supplied
The Lady in Red: An Oran Park Author
Sandy Bartlett (left) with Amy Woodley (right) from Start Fresh Accounting Image Supplied. Article: Renee Garcia.
Do you wish to feel cool and confident? Do you wish you could wear your smile with pride and own it? Do you have big dreams that feel like they are miles away? Lady in red Sandy Bartlett, local Oran Park business owner and “Your Cool Confidence Coach” from Stairway 2 Dreams felt the same way. She is now the proud, smiling and confident new first-time published author of inspiring book “Your Cool Confidence - The 5C’s To Embracing Your Smile”. It’s not every day you can say that you live and work in the same place as a respected author, but now we can and what an achievement it is. Time and time again we hear people talk about their dreams and what they want in life, but how many make them their reality? When asking Sandy what cool confidence means to her, she simply responded, “Being able to say yes to my dream and be in the moment with the ability to step into my courage, commitment, compassion, communication and competence to make it happen. To be able to throw off the covers and embrace all that life has to offer”. Sandy was joined by many of her close friends, clients, work colleagues, mentors and local business connections at the Oran Park Smart Work Hub recently. Sporting her familiar red attire that those who know her well have come to love and associate her brand with, she officially launch her prized possession. You can purchase a copy of “Your Cool Confidence - The 5C’s To Embracing Your Smile” by Sandy Bartlett directly from Stairway 2 Dreams at the Oran Park Smart Work Hub or Book Face at Macarthur Square. Young Mother Shows the Way Local resident Suzie Haddad was a keen swimmer growing up. Her love of the pool was soon put on hold when she married and had her two children, Isaac and Ava. For many parents, the dream of one day returning to the pool as a competitive swimmer would just be that, a dream. But, not for Suzie. The inspirational mother’s hard work and determination have led her to represent the Campbelltown Masters Swim Club at the Masters National Championships at Perth in April and will be followed by the Masters Pan Pacific Championships in November this year. “It was only when I had my daughter Ava that I got back into fitness and being healthier. I joined the Macarthur Triathlon Club and realised that my swimming wasn’t too bad. I decided to work hard on my swim leg, so I could gain a lead going into the bike leg” explained Suzie. “One day at tri club, we were rained out and we didn’t race. A friend suggested that I should go to Campbelltown Masters Swim Club and do a race. I went and the moment I stood behind the block, I realised just how much I loved the adrenaline of racing” she added. After speaking to her coach, Suzie decided to shift her focus to swimming and to work hard towards this. She would try to attend as many carnivals as she could to get race practice. Being at the carnivals would also allow her to meet new friends who loved swimming as much as she did. With one of her big goals this year to race at the Masters National Championships in Perth in April, Suzie had a fantastic meet. Her coach was very impressed with her efforts over the 5 days as she got stronger and faster. “I managed to achieve three top 5 positions in my age group. I went to Perth to race in 11 events and came back with all PB times and top 10 finishes” she beamed. Haddad is aiming for a big meet at the Masters Pan Pacific Championships in November, “My goal is to bring home PB times and medals for my Isaac and Ava”. Spring Clean Your Body At long last, Spring arrives. We often think of this season as a time to throw open the windows and let the fresh air in while doing a big tidy up around the house. What a great idea! But, don’t stop there. It’s also the perfect time to take stock of yourself by refreshing your mind and body as well. Here are a few ideas for trading a winter sedentary lifestyle for a fresh season of healthy living: Use lawn maintenance as exercise - gardening, weeding, mowing will get you outside and moving around AND spruce the garden at the same time. Create an outdoor entertaining space - get some comfy seating and eat more meals outside, hang out with the family or friends, take your lap top outdoors to work or better yet, just relax and read a book. Try a new outdoor activity - this is a great time to try something new like yoga, hiking, swimming, biking, golf or kayaking. Practise mindfulness - learn to meditate, keep a gratitude journal or write affirmations. It’s important to declutter the mind, heart and soul. Change your diet - drink more water and add a springy touch to meals. This Spring, definitely dust off those cobwebs in the house, but make sure to take time to shake off some of those old bad habits and make way for a new you. Image: www.pexels.com. Business Connect in Gregory Hills
Our Commitment to Give Back
Business networking has fast become the must do thing for business owners. A way to connect and build your business through referrals and word of mouth. It’s not every day that a local hotel gets behind our business community and gives something back, like supporting and offering a free business connect event to all local business owners. Launching their first business connect recently, Gregory Hills Hotel Licensee John Payne proudly welcomed over 20 different business owners into his hotel, including local Councillor Chris Patterson MP. This event brought business owners together to meet, mingle and try to support each other within the community. John was front and centre on the night and spoke about his plans and what he hopes to achieve from the event. ‘’As a growing community, it’s important that we know who our local business owners are. Most importantly, it’s being able to support them and utilize their services when we can and hopefully by putting this on it creates awareness of what is out there in our own backyards’’ said John. As the high-class canapes and drinks were flowing generously put on by the hotel, so too were the conversations and business cards. And with a relaxed and child friendly atmosphere, it was no wonder the first one was a raging success. Business owners are also encouraged to use the hotel facilities for any functions, meetings or get togethers that they may be organising and can be arranged with the team onsite or via phone. Just another great initiative on offer for residents and business owners of our growing area. Gregory Hills Hotel hope to run these events quarterly and information will be found on their Facebook page as the event is approaching.
At District Gazette, we have chosen to align ourselves with a charity that is very close to our hearts. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT 2wardSuccess Australia According to cognitive neuroscientists, we think anywhere from 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day, we make around 35,000 decisions per day and as many as 98 percent of those thoughts are the same as we had the day before. Talk about creatures of habit! Is it any wonder with this amount of inner traffic we lose touch with ourself? So, making change isn’t easy. Gavin Hyde “The Happy Mind Expert” from 2wardSuccess Australia sees the same patterns in many people, where they are stuck in a loop without understanding. Every day people are looking through the same lens of the past doing the same thing, hoping to achieve their goals and create a new future, only to be disappointed when they continue to play the same game that they always have with no change in sight. Sound familiar? This can often lead to reverting back to certain habits, thoughts, feelings and addictive behaviours that will not help them to achieve what they want in life. A program that Gavin has developed after 20 years of experience working with people in the field is THE HAPPY MIND AFFECT™. It helps people to reignite their passion, reawaken their purpose and reinvent their profession so they can release their past, reprogram their future and rejoice living a life they love. Putting it into simple terms, Gavin explains: • The first step is to get you to ACCEPT what you’ve been doing isn’t working, pinpoint the cause and get you inspired so you can regain your POWER. • The second step is to dissolve the blocks causing the problem and get you crystal clear of what you want to achieve that ALIGNS you to your PASSION. • The last step is to support you to take PURPOSEFUL ACTION that transforms your personal and professional life, so you and your family can live the life of your dreams. If you would like to know more, contact Gavin from 2wardSuccess Australia on 0411 441773. He can also be found on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Book Review Nevermoor The Trials of Morrigan Crow
The Trials of Morrigan Crow is a spell binding and thrilling master piece written by Jessica Townsend. It is an amazing book suitable for middle grade. At the end of each page, I couldn’t help gasping, for it surprised me and I could not put the book down because it was so engrossing. Nevermoor is about a girl named Morrigan Crow. She was born on Eventide in Jackal Fax. Anyone who was born on Eventide was called a cursed child, so was Morrigan. A part of the curse was that she was to die on her 11th birthday when the clock struck midnight on Eventide. For every bad luck, unfortunate event or mishap that happened, Morrigan was blamed as she was the cursed child. Starting with broken ribs to crops failing that year, she was blamed. People said bad luck came to them when Morrigan looked at them or talked to them. On Morrigan’s 11th birthday she was destined to die, but something miraculously unusual happened. It changed Morrigan’s life. A spectacular man called Jupiter North came just a few minutes before midnight and whisked her away to a magical city called Nevermoor. Nevermoor is a magical city, where anything is possible. Anything, like flying with dragons or jumping off ceilings and landing perfectly. She also came to know that Jupiter was a very well-known and respectable person in The Wondrous Society. Wondrous Society is like a family; all the kids there are like your brothers and your sisters. To get in the Society, everyone must pass four deadly dangerous tasks. In the end, only a few kids will make it in. Will Morrigan be able to pass the four deadly dangerous tasks? If you want to find the answer to the question and know what happens next, go ahead and read Nevermoor. I highly recommend it!

PET CHAT
Article Written + Submitted by: Kelly Toomey | Final Year Veterinary Student | University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden | A: 410 Werombi Road, Camden NSW 2570 | P: 4655 0777
Spring Has Sprung, Stinging Insects have Stung! Now Spring has sprung, everybody, including our pets, is spending more time outside and enjoying the warmer weather and longer days. However this is also true for stinging insects, as Lexi found out. Lexi is a curious one year old German Shepherd who loves to play and discover new things but to her dismay insects did not want to play with her. Lexi gave her owners quite a fright when, after a morning in the yard, she suddenly had a very swollen right eye and muzzle. This is a classic presentation of insect bite hypersensitivity. The two most common types of stinging insects are wasps and bees. Bees only sting once but their stinger is barbed and lodges into the skin. Wasps can sting multiple times and tend to be more painful. Typically, dogs are stung on their faces when they are sniffing around hives or nests. If your dog tries to bite an insect, they may also get stung inside their mouth, on their tongue or in their throat. This can be very dangerous if they develop swelling that can block their airway. Some animals can also suffer allergic reactions. Allergic reactions that affect the airways are of particular concern for squashed faced dogs (brachycephalics such as bulldogs, stiffies, pugs and frenchies). So watch out for general weakness or lethargy, itchiness, vomiting or diarrhoea, difficulty breathing, and/or swelling. The severity of the reaction is highly variable and difficult to predict. If your pet displays any of these signs or seems unwell, please bring them in immediately, as pain relief and antihistamines may be required. ď ˛ď€ Lexi sporting her swollen eye and muzzle | Images Supplied
