A Life of Song Harrington Park musician Stacie Richardson has lots to sing about. With over 20 years of experience as a lead vocalist, the local singer is looking forward to getting back behind the mic for audiences once live music returns. Stacie is currently the lead vocalist and manager of The After Party Band. The 4-piece band play party style music on the club and corporate circuit. She is also an agent at City Vibe Entertainment and Management, where she books tours and events. Add to this vocal coach at Sing Your Song and you have one dedicated artist. “I’ve always had a desire to perform as a teen (with a slight obsession with Madonna amongst a few other artists) so I went to a performing arts high school to harness it. Back then I guess kids wanted to be famous and now they want to be YouTube stars” smiled Stacie. “I had a passion to write original music and went on a search. I was writing with a few different people from the age of 20, until I met my current life partner, Mark Annesley who just happened to play guitar” she added. As a Co-Founder of Sleeping Babys, a 5-piece pop/rock band who are currently on a break, Stacie toured the East Coast of Australia as a support for Ted Mulry Gang and Mi-Sex. She won Australian Songwriting Association Awards for two of the band’s original songs in Indie/Rock category. The current pandemic has had a devastating impact on many industries, including live music, “My last show was in March at North Bondi RSL. Since then, I’ve had every booking cancelled without any cancellation fees. It has been a shock to the whole music industry”. A return to live gigs with bookings for late August and October is proof that there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Time away has also allowed Stacie to pass on her expertise as a vocal coach in Harrington Park and Cobbitty. She has been excited to share her knowledge with kids, teens, and adults. “My musical plans for the future include continuing to perform with The After Party Band. Although Sleeping Babys are having a break, I still love to write music. I’d love to release some acoustic tracks and live stream my music. I want to promote events which is a part of my new venture as well” she finished.

Grant Funding to Improve Visibility in Harrington Park

Lighting will improve along a popular Harrington Park walkway, after Council accepted $15,000 in funding for the project. The NSW Premier’s Grant will help bollard lighting to be installed along the footpath sections of the paved areas between Fairwater Drive and Four Seasons Park, with Council to contribute an additional $25,000 to the works. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said it was fantastic to secure the grant after community feedback about the location. “As a Council we are here to service the residents in our beautiful area and after hearing of community concerns about low level light on the pathway it was important to take action” Cr Fedeli said. “The project will also use solar power which will not only reduce the ongoing cost to the community but also make a positive contribution to the environment. “I thank NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Camden MP Peter Sidgreaves for their support in approving the funding and I look forward to the finished product”. The new lighting is set to improve night-time visibility and is expected to be completed within six months. The project joins a number of recently completed major projects in the Camden area including: • Kirkham Park playing fields - construction of two new rugby league playing fields; • Kirkham Park BMX Facility Stage 1 - construction of 5m Start Hill, access ramps, lighting, timing, and scoring system, and a main racetrack for Club, State and National BMX events; and • Arcadian Hills Passive Park - construction of new paths, seating, garden areas and additional trees as well as public artwork and refurbishment of the original path and gates to the historic Denbigh property to the west of the site. For more information on Council’s major projects, visit camden.nsw.gov.au.

Oran Park Couple Take On The Block The Block, Australia’s most successful renovation reality program, is back for an incredible 16th season – stepping back through time for a challenge unlike any other. An exciting addition to the new season will be Sarah and George Bragias, a married couple from Oran Park who hope their style will spark the judges’ attention. Sarah and George have some solid experience. George is a tradie and they have renovated two homes. That might have given them the know-how in spades, but will the added pressure of being on The Block rock them to their foundations? Sarah’s husband George sums her qualities up perfectly: always laughing, always smiling and always positive. Sarah is a high school teacher, and although she loves the job, she hopes her experience on The Block could lead her to something even better. With an eye for design and lots of creative ideas, perhaps The Block is the perfect sanctuary for her to find out where her passion lies. “Don’t get me wrong, I love my job, but I am not the same person when I’m teaching. It’s just not the dream” she said. For a fun-loving person, Sarah admits she can be quite particular and fastidious. In the kitchen her plates are perfectly aligned, the jars are labelled, and all the glasses are spaced out equally, facing just the right way. George has worked as an electrician in Sydney for 13 years. Even with that experience he admits a lot of the tradies’ tools on The Block will be quite foreign to him. Sarah describes George as a very funny character, a bit of a nerd, and unlike anyone she has ever met. On and off the worksite George is a kid at heart and a big teddy bear. This loved-up couple are all fun, smiles – and a bit of toilet humour. The fact they made it onto the show is a dream come true for them. In George’s words: “We’ve said it a million times, but this kind of thing doesn’t happen to people like us. It’s mad, bro”. Sarah and George’s tight bond is just as important as their family relationships. With George coming from Greek and Italian heritage, family and tradition have always been a central part of life. They want to start their own family as soon as they can, and George thinks that will bring them even closer together, “our next great adventure”. It’ll just have to wait until after The Block. They’ve had their struggles. An investment property they owned was trashed by tenants, leaving the newly married couple devastated and forced to completely rebuild the inside of the house. Finding the silver lining in that situation, Sarah and George feel it has perfectly prepared them for the hard work The Block is notorious for.

Is it Time for a Family Review?

Fathers Day First Sunday in September Quiet HSC Study Space at Oran Park Library

It is a good idea every now and again to take a look at your family and review what has been, and where you would like to focus in the future. This helps you to figure out what is truly important in the life of your family, so you can do more of it. The following questions may help you to do that. Gather around and have a discussion - share your thoughts, feelings, and ideas. AS A FAMILY… • We would like to visit… • We have fun when we… • Our weaknesses are… • Our favourite family memories are… • We show appreciation for each other by… • We like the same movies, books, and music… • Places in the community we like to go to… • We are good at… • What we argue about the most… • What I tell others about my family… • The unique things we have in common… • Three goals for our future as a family… As part of any review, you have to be prepared for some hard truths. Be prepared to listen and acknowledge. It’s not about blame, it’s just about figuring out what you are doing well and what you can do better as a family. r

Oran Park Library has expanded its study space for local students studying for their High School Certificate (HSC) this year. Students can use either study desks or secure space in the Lakeside Room in Oran Park Library on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, as well as Saturday mornings, leading up to the exams. Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the extra space will give students valuable time to prepare for the biggest exams of their young lives. “It is important for students to prepare themselves as best as possible” Cr Fedeli said. “Creating a quiet study space at home can be difficult, so we’re proud to offer this extra space for them at Oran Park Library. “Students will still have to follow all COVID-19 guidelines and will be spaced out according to social distancing measures for their safety. “This is about helping our young community through their exam period together with going through an unprecedented time with the COVID-19 pandemic”. Camden Libraries are also offering information on how students can maximise their HSC outcomes with a variety of online resources. Students can also Ask-A-Librarian for assistance online. For more information on HSC assistance, go to library. camden.nsw.gov.au/hsc

Street Outreach Service Now in Oran Park

Local charity Shining Stars Foundation runs both homeless and community outreach programs across the Macarthur. With 11 services that span from Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden, Wollondilly and Wollongong, they have now added the Oran Park Skate Park at the Julia Reserve Youth Precinct on Fridays every fortnight from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. Shining Stars Foundation was formed four and a half years ago by Co-Founders Kylee Bentham and Lyn Townsend, after seeing a greater need to help the homeless and less fortunate. Both ladies run teams across their services and manage all aspects of the charity with volunteers. “Our service is the gap between survival and not a lot of the time. We find people needing help for different reasons. We have homeless people on the streets, families fleeing domestic violence situations, elderly struggling, people suffering from mental health, international university students and they all need different levels of support. Our meals services and emergency food hampers are making a massive difference in helping people” said Kylee Bentham, Co-Founder of Shining Stars Foundation to the Oran Park Gazette. The Foundation relies upon the generosity of the greater community through donations to fund the important service. “Having the local community help with donations and support enables us to provide our service to those homeless and less fortunate. We are grateful for all this” added Kylee. If you would like to get behind and support the Shining Stars Foundation, you can visit their website at www. shiningstarsfoundation.or.au or search ‘Shining Stars Foundation Street Outreach Service’ on Facebook. r

Oran Park Probus Club

The aim of Probus is to promote fun, fellowship and friendship to retired and semi-retired people in the community. The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in the suspension of all meetings and activities of the Oran Park Probus Club. Many of our members are missing their regular meetings and activity groups, the lunches, coffee, and chats and are yearning for the day we can board a coach and have a great day out. It is six months since we enjoyed a bus trip and river cruise on the Georges River! The Management Committee continues to meet monthly via Zoom and members are invited to attend a monthly Zoom meeting for a speaker’s presentation. Recent topics have included label reading and awareness of ingredients that can affect our health and legal information concerning our digital assets. Our regular newsletter is still being produced and delivered via email and a few in hard copy. Oran Park Probus Club meetings are unlikely to resume in the foreseeable future. If you would like further information about Oran Park Probus Club, please call on 0410 758755 or email oranpark@probusclubs.com.au. r

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Recently, the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference released their 2020 Social Justice Statement titled ‘To Live Life to the Full: Mental Health in Australia Today’. It is a timely message in the context of the current pandemic. As Archbishop Mark Coleridge says in the FOREWORD of this Statement: “COVID-19 pandemic is a threat in many ways – physical, social, political and economic. But it’s also putting pressure on the mental health of many people in ways both seen and unseen … In this Social Justice Statement … the Catholic Bishops of Australia encourage faith communities, governments and each one of us, to make mental health a priority. We want to say clearly that mental ill-health is not a moral failure, the result of a lack of faith, or of weak will. Jesus himself was labelled mad (Mark 3:21; John 10:19) and, like us, he suffered psychological distress (Luke 22:44; Matt 26:37; Mark 14:33; John 12:27) … During this time of pandemic, we have often heard it said that “we are all in this together”. The quality of our care for the people who are the most vulnerable or disadvantaged will be the test of whether or not this is true. A commitment to the common good means attending to the good of all of us, without exception. It means paying special attention to those who are most often overlooked, sidelined, or excluded. It is surely time for us to make mental health a real priority, so that all people may know the fullness of life which Jesus offers (John 10:10)”. r

Gathering for Much Needed Community

How are you? It appears that the effects of COVID-19 on our society continue. Some of those impacts have made existing difficulties deeper. Mental health. Domestic violence. Loneliness. Some have lead to a resurgence in good things. Bike riding. Family games nights. Lots of people out walking. What’s it been like for you? If you’re feeling some of the burdens of our COVID world we’d love to share the hope, direction, and life-giving wisdom of Jesus with you. At NewLife we’ve been streaming church online for the past 5 months or so. It’s pretty good. Not the same as being there, but a wonderful substitute for the real thing. You could start by checking it out online: www.youtube.com/newlifeoranparklive at 9:30am. If you’ve given that a shot, you might like to see some people and experience again the joy of community - particularly as we try to find our way forward in the pandemic. You’re invited to join our service in the building on Central Avenue at 9:30am on a Sunday morning. Of course we’re seeking to do that in the safest possible way. We’re following the Premier’s directions on maximum group size (100), we’re wearing masks, social distancing, and have a COVID Safe plan in place. If you wanted to let us know you were coming you can streamline things by jumping onto our ticket site - www.trybooking.com/ eventlist/newlifeoranpark We’re keen to help our kids keep growing in their faith too and so you’ll find our kid’s program running on a Sunday morning (for those from ages 2-12). Additionally on a Friday afternoon we run J-Crew (for Primary school kids) at 4pm and NewLifeYouth (for years 6-12) at 6:30pm. COVID is tough on everyone. Don’t face it alone. We’d love to see you online or in person really soon.

Tender Accepted for Narellan Sports Hub Stage 2 Camden will soon become a sporting mecca in south-west Sydney, with Camden Council accepting a tender for Narellan Sports Hub Stage 2 construction works. Funding has been received from the Western Sydney Parkland City Liveability Program, at $11.3 million, and the Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund, at $5 million, for the design and construction of the Narellan Sports Hub Stage 2 works in 2019. Stage 2 works will include: • 14 additional netball courts with floodlighting; • Synthetic athletics track including field and jump facilities, floodlighting, drainage and irrigation; • An additional international size rugby league field to replace the existing smaller ‘mod league’ field, including floodlighting and drainage. The existing full-size field will be reconstructed with new lighting, irrigation and drainage; • An athletics administration/club building; • Car parking – approximately an additional 1150 spaces in four new carpark areas; • Internal access roads; • A criterion cycling track utilising the main circulation access road; • Road bridge and a pedestrian bridge over the existing drainage corridor; • Large turfed area for future multi-purpose use; • Pedestrian and cycle path network; • Associated services and infrastructure; and • Major upgrade of the Porrende Street roundabout including undergrounding of power and landscaping (Funding received from Western Sydney Infrastructure

Program at $2.7million) Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said Stage 2 works will further enhance Narellan Sports Hub as a state-of-the-art facility for residents and visitors to enjoy. “We are focused on delivering high quality sport and recreation facilities for our growing community” Cr Fedeli said. “This is an important step towards making Narellan Sports Hub the pristine destination for sporting competitions in South West Sydney. Once complete, the Sports Hub will be a popular destination for not only locals but many others across Sydney with the facility to have the ability to host a number of state competitions across many sports including netball, athletics and rugby league. “I thank both the Federal and State Governments for their continued support and I look forward to seeing the completed project”. The works will further enhance Narellan Sports Hub after Council delivered the $11 million Stage 1 in October 2017, which included 30 high quality netball courts, expansive amenities building and car park. Council accepted the tender for Narellan Sports Hub Stage 2 provided by local firm TJ & RF Fordham Pty Ltd to undertake the works with an expected completion by December 2021.

Welcoming home a little pet? Recently welcomed a new puppy or kitten into your home? Firstly, congratulations! The first year of your puppy or kitten’s life is lots of fun for both of you – so enjoy it! Owning a pet is a big responsibility. A privilege. It’s a lifelong commitment that requires care and compassion. Along with registering and microchipping your pet (to ensure their safe return if lost), there are also lots of preventative health issues to consider when purchasing a pup or kitten. They are vaccinations, desexing, heartworm prevention, worming and flea control, dental health care, puppy socialisation and training, exercise, bathing and feeding. A high-quality balanced diet is very important particularly during your pet’s first 12 months. They have very different nutritional requirements to an adult, including extra protein requirements for muscle development and calcium for bone growth. At Macarthur Vet Group we recommend Hill’s Science Diet VetEssentials Puppy and Kitten – a premium range of commercial pet food. At least 75% of your pup or kitten’s diet should be derived from a balanced diet. They should be fed 3-4 small meals a day until 4 months of age, then twice daily at least until fully grown. Science Diet VetEssentials, along with regular exercise and visiting your vet for regular veterinary checks ups maximises your pet’s potential for a happy and healthy future. Your pet’s health is our primary concern, and we at Macarthur Vet Group will provide the best possible care for your pet. If you have brought your gorgeous new family member home but unsure of the next steps, feel free to come in for a puppy or kitten consultation. The vets and nurses will provide you with lots of information and equip you with the knowledge to help care for your new pet. For more information head to www.macarthuvet.com.au

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Last month in this very column, I asked ‘August’ to be kind. In turn, it was a very sombre month. If you’re anything like me, I watched the news daily to keep abreast of the COVID-19 developments in both NSW and across other states. The message of mask wearing was and remains to be a consistent message. If not for your protection, definitely for those around you. The tightening of restrictions around school end of year gatherings and celebrations has been introduced, along with a series of limitations relating to specific activities (singing, choirs, windinstruments). 2020 has been a journey like no other. Like many other small businesses, The District Gazette is locally owned. Our family and staff live (and love) local, we shop where you do, our kids attend the schools that your children do (or did), we dine at local restaurants and use local trades/ services also owned by fellow members of the community. Like many businesses, we are grateful for the support of both our longstanding advertisers (and the new ones!) along with our loyal readers (just like you)! When reaching out to our advertisers be sure to tell them where you found them! It gives them (and us!) a real kick. Now give yourself permission to sneak away and immerse yourself in all the latest local happenings. Enjoy Your Community News. Remember, ‘Help people. Even when you know they can’t help you back’.
