Local Family Leading the Community One Eco Step at a Time An increasing number of Australian households are looking for natural cleaning products, in a bid to reduce toxic chemicals in their homes and minimise their impact on the environment. Family-run business, TRUEECO, has created the solution to help you take a very simple eco step forward. Oran Park locals, Rodrigo and Dimitria Yanez created TRUEECO at the beginning of this year, encouraging their ‘tribe’ of customers to reduce, reuse and recycle by developing their own non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning products. “We created TRUEECO to share the gift of safe cleaning with Australian families, looking to not only clean their homes but help clean the world by reducing the use of single use plastic bottles” the pair explained. The team has created three eco alternatives so far, with plans to expand further. TRUEECO products include The Everyday Cleaner, The Dog and Cat Surface Cleaner, which eliminates urine, and their TRUEFOAM antibacterial foam sanitiser. TRUEECO has created an incredible ‘Save a Bottle’ campaign, providing a kit which will allow customers to convert a water bottle or a soft drink bottle into an eco-friendly cleaning solution. The kit includes spray trigger, 25ml Concentrate and an Eco Tag explaining how to create your own product. “Through TRUEECO, we aim to save 1 million bottles from ending up in landfill” Rodrigo and Dimitria revealed. Customers can pick up their kits from shows or expos that TRUEECO attend or can simply visit the TRUEECO website and only pay for shipping costs. Dimitria and her family have also been participating in local markets and fairs to educate the community about the importance of reducing our impact on the environment. Impressing organisers at TRUEECO’s very first market appearance at the Camden Show, the team was awarded 3rd prize for their commercial display. This September, the Yanez family will be taking their incredible eco cleaning products to the national market at the Brisbane Eco Expo - Australia’s largest sustainability expo. Brisbane Eco Expo will take place from 13-15th September and will include thousands of eco-friendly products, a Lifeline $2 Clothing Sale, the Eco Pledge, a Vegan Market and food trucks for all taste buds, as well as special guest speakers with sustainability masterclasses, cooking demonstrations, DIYs and seminars. To find out more about TRUEECO, visit https://www.trueeco.com.au and to find out more about the Brisbane Eco Expo, visit https://savetheworldexpo.com.au. r Dimitria and Rodrigo Yanez | Image Supplied

Oran Park is set to become pink, thanks to the local charity event, Pink Up Oran Park in October, with much needed funds being raised for the McGrath Foundation. A concert is currently being organised to take place on Friday 11th October at Camden Civic Centre with a performance by 2017 The Voice Winner and Macarthur’s own Alfie Arcuri. This will be followed by closing ceremony plans, which are underway for Sunday 27th October in Oran Park. “The McGrath Foundation contacted myself and asked if I could do this, due to my involvement with the local community. That’s when we decided to organise Pink Up Oran Park in October” said Event Organiser Sudha Sudharshan to the Oran Park Gazette. The Macarthur event has already gathered support from the local community, with $10 raffle tickets being sold for the fundraiser. Some of the prizes on offer in the raffle include round trip flights to Bali for two donated by Space Real Estate, decking or pergola voucher donated by Emcorp Homes and valued at $3,000 and a UFC Gregory Hills One Year Membership donated by UFC Gregory Hills and valued at $1,600. The raffle tickets are available at Space Real Estate and Donut King in Oran Park. You may have also seen the two pink vehicles around the area, that are being used to promote the event. “Our goal for Pink Up Oran Park in October is to make our locals aware of what the McGrath Foundation is doing for breast cancer patients and to raise funds so that the Foundation can hire more nurses to care for more patients” ended Sudha. Think Spring – Think Leura!

KOBHI'S KITCHEN

Hi everyone! My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen. Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook. P.S I hope you enjoy making this. Kobhi

dad's green chicken pasta

Ingredients

One packet of spinach fettuccine (500g) 500g of boneless chicken breast One cup of cream Three tablespoons of fresh basil pesto One tablespoon of olive oil Method

1. Your adult helper needs to boil a pot of water. Once the pot is hot, they can add the packet of spinach fettuccine. 2. My Mum does the next step too. She cuts up the chicken breast into strips. Next, she adds the olive oil to a pan and then cooks the chicken breast. The chicken breast is cooked until it is brown or as Mum says ‘golden’ 3. Add three tablespoons of fresh basil pesto to the chicken in the pan. Make sure the chicken is covered all over with the pesto. I love the smell of pesto! 4. Pour one cup of cream into the pan and mix it with the pesto and the chicken. Let it bubble for a bit. I think they call that simmering. 5. The spinach fettuccine should be ready now. Drain the water. Mum puts it in one of those things with holes in it to help it drain. 6. Add the spinach fettuccine to the chicken and mix it. 7. Ready to Serve 6

Meet Toni – The Veggie Lady

Car Rego and Insurance Due? School Fees Looming? Fridge on the Fritz? Don't call a payday lender, call 1800 509 994 about a No Interest Loan. The NILS program provides an interest free loan up to $1,500 to low income earners to help them with essenal purchases. Now that Spring is in the air, many of us turn to the thought of growing our very own fresh fruit and vegetables at home. Of course, this begs the question – where do I start? Local horticulturalist Toni Salter, who is otherwise known as “The Veggie Lady”, may just be the person to help. Toni runs workshops from her home, so others can see how she does it and to get ideas from her suburban block where she grows veggies, fruit trees and keeps chickens. You even get to sample some of her produce with a tasty lunch provided in the workshop! Toni also runs workshops through several Sydney local councils. These range from Small Space Veggie Gardening, Native Gardens and Herb Gardens through to fun things like making terrariums, kokedamas and succulent wreaths. “I became a horticulturist 20 years ago. Back then, you couldn’t just go to the supermarket and buy organic produce like today. Most of the organic produce available then was small, blemished and just looked generally unappealing. Being so much more expensive than conventional supermarket food, I simply couldn’t afford to eat organic food at that stage of my life with two toddlers and only one family income” said Toni. “I figured that if I could grow the basics myself, then the money I’d save could be put towards the food that I couldn’t grow. I set up a little co-op of safety-conscious mothers from a women’s group that met at my local church and to those who didn’t know me, I became known as “The Veggie Lady”. My horticulture certificate helped me to turn a ‘pre-occupation' with gardening into an ‘occupation’, when I started teaching others how to grow their own produce” she continued. When growing veggies, Toni explained that our local area has lots of clay, so avoid tapered root crops like parsnip and carrots. Otherwise, we have a great range of things we can grow here – just choose the ones that suit the season. Zucchini, capsicum and eggplant are good to put in at Springtime for a bumper Summer and Autumn harvest. “My favourite vegetables to grow are tomatoes. Everyone loves tomatoes and once you’ve tasted home grown, there’s no turning back. First time gardeners should start small and grow from seedlings to get a head start. Salad greens are quick and easy to grow so you get instant rewards for Spring and Summer meals” tipped Toni. For more information about The Veggie Lady, visit www.theveggielady.com, or www.facebook.com/ TheVeggieLadyAustralia/ and www.instagram.com/the_ veggie_lady/.

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish Recently, I came across an article about bridges. Not that I am suggesting we need to think about building a local version of the Sydney Harbour Bridge or the like, but I do think as our suburbs and local communities continue to grow and “In an age characterized by all but a desperate need for solidarity, when the religious and secular bonds of community have become badly 1 frayed, bridges real and metaphorical have become more important than ever”. In other words, we need to be bridge-builders here in this exponentially growing part of South West Sydney that we call our home. “Pope Francis has repeatedly urged audiences around the world to engage in bridge-building (something he thinks is almost “more than human”). He warns that people who build walls become prisoners of the very walls they themselves have built. And in 2002, well before Francis became pope, Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury, began chairing an annual Building Bridges seminar to bring Muslim and Christian scholars together in exploring issues at the heart of the two traditions”. Now while the task of bridge-building is one that civic, church and community leaders need to take on board, we all need to be focused on building bridges: bridges of communication and friendship between neighbours and work-colleagues; bridges of mutual respect with those who are different than us or who hold different points of view; bridges of trust and love and forgiveness between members of our families. As Pope Francis said a few years ago in a tweet he posted on his Twitter account: “I invite you not to build walls but bridges, to conquer evil with good, offence with forgiveness, to live in peace with everyone”. May this be both our prayer for, and our invitation to, each other. 1

FAITH – NEWLIFE ANGLICAN ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Lead Pastor Stuart Starr @ New Life Anglican Church W: newlifeanglican.org.au E: stuart@newlifeanglican.org.au A: Cnr Central Avenue + Marcus Loane Way, Oran Park NSW 2570

Kids, Questions, & Jesus Kids ask great questions. A friend at church passed on a question she’d been asked by one of her prep kids, “where was Jesus’s power when He was a baby?” You might have wondered the same thing. Here’s a short attempt to answer that question. The first thing to note is that Jesus was naturally born into the world. He wasn’t beamed down from Heaven - Mary had to deliver him. That gives us our first hint - Jesus is truly human - not a superman character arriving via a spaceship! Our next picture of His youth shows Him asking questions in the temple. Everyone is amazed at His answers - but He’s not doing miracles there. No, it’s not until He’s fully grown into a man that Jesus begins to heal the sick and cast out demons. Jesus wasn’t powerless - He was powerfully wise, powerfully filled with grace - but not spreading His supernatural power around until it was the right time. There’s a beautiful line in the Bible which reads, “And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.” We want our kids to ask and receive answers for questions like that and so NewLife has started something brand new for Primary School aged kids from Prep to year 5. It’s called “J-Crew” and it’s an after school club that's running every Friday of school term from 4-5:30pm. We’ve already seen a great response from the kids to a program that’s filled with games, songs, afternoon tea, craft, and fun-filled teaching about Jesus. If you’ve got a child who would fit into this group and you’d like them to come along we ask $3 to cover the materials. We’re up and running right now and we’d love to see you there. www.facebook.com/JCrewNewLife

Reading is Tops at OPPS!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s…It’s… It’s students enjoying reading books and dressing up at Oran Park Public School (OPPS). Reading at OPPS is a superpower, as it creates and opens our imagination to worlds that exist inside others or informs us of facts or viewpoints. This year’s book parade theme was “Reading is my secret power”. Oran Park Public School celebrated Book Week 2019 with the annual Book Week Parade. Mums, dads, carers and friends banded together to create memories for the students at OPPS who enjoyed a day of fun. Students paraded secret powers in costumes that replaced the regular maroon uniforms. The parade enabled students to share their favourite book character who possessed a secret power. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participated and the lively and dedicated staff also led by example as they displayed their own love of books and the characters who grace their pages. The whole community came together to share in the fun and enjoy the creativity of their families, friends, students and staff.

2019 Oran Park Ganesh Festival This month, the local community will come together for the 2019 Oran Park Ganesh Festival, which will be held at the Sandown Rooms at Oran Park Library on Saturday the 7th September from 9:00am to 3:00pm. The third-year celebrations will include cultural activities like Indian songs, dances and dramas followed by lunch and Ganesh Visarjan. There will also be Ganesh Pooja (prayer ritual). You will be able to experience Indian culture involving colourful sarees, traditional Indian attire, delicious Indian food, devotional and Bollywood song and dance, all at the very heart of Oran Park. “The most exciting part about Ganesh Chathurthi is the celebration and the festive food that excites many Hindus. In India, Ganesh is worshipped for the whole 11 days for wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Life-like colourful clay Ganesh idols are erected on the streets with pompous music and dances seen during processions. At homes, families gather to worship small Ganesh Idols by decorating them with fruits and flowers and offer various sweets and foods” said Oran Park Ganesh Festival’s Sridhar Inavolu. “Festivals like these showcase the uniqueness and pride of its residents and strengthen their sense of belonging in the local community” ended Sridhar. r A wonderful celebration of Indian culture | Image Sridhar Inavolu

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST Spring has arrived, and so has colour! After 20+ years publishing the District Gazette publications we're chuffed that we can now add a splash of colour! And how fantastic does it look? This month we introduce 'Kobhi's Kitchen' on page 6. This budding little local chef is sure to dish up some delights, as he explores and shares his passion for cooking. We couldn't publish this amazing paper without you. Do you have a story to share? A great achievement, a milestone, an accomplishment against all odds? An interesting career, a rare find, a talent, an unusual skill or hobby? We'd love to share your story, it might be exactly what our readers need to hear or know. Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Leave footprints of love and kindness wherever you go'.
