1. Start Early.

Give yourself plenty of time for this process, because it will inevitably take longer than you expect. Take your time, and don’t try to sort through your entire house in one day or weekend. A couple of weeks to a month is a more realistic timeline. Take it one room at a time, and take breaks throughout.

2. Decide what stays and what goes

First things first, you need to decide what to keep, sell or simply get rid of. Make a list of items in every room and categorize accordingly. Don’t forget the attic and/or basement!

3. Eliminate rooms you won’t have in your new home.

If you’re moving to a smaller space, there will be rooms that you no longer have, like a garage or office. Nearly everything in those spaces will need to be sold, donated, tossed, or relocated to other rooms.

4. Have a plan for moveouts before your estate sale

Organize a place for things to go that don’t sell: donations to local charities, second-hand stores, recycling, gifting, or disposal.

5. Allow some time to reminisce.

It’s OK to pause and let the nostalgia take over for a bit. Cry if you need to, or move on to another room and come back. This is why you started early!

Back in the early days, Capitol Hill was populated by a crosssection of congressmen and navy yard workers. Nowadays, it’s one of the best DC neighborhoods for families. In fact, aside from a few notable landmarks (you know, like the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Folger Shakespeare Library), Capitol Hill is predominantly residential, comprised of blocks of rowhomes, townhomes, and lovely Queen Annes.

If you’re smart about looking, Capitol Hill can be reasonably affordable and relatively quiet. But it still offers access to the city thanks to close proximity to Capitol South and Eastern Market stations, plus the weekly joy of buying fresh food at Eastern Market.

ABOUT THIS TOUR

This 12-block walking tour features 10 original murals created by the DC Department of Public Works MuralsDC program. This tour will give tourists, street art fans and walking enthusiasts a chance to see the small but notable portion of the program’s 141 murals displayed along the District’s famous U Street/Cardoza corridor, located in the historic neighborhood of Shaw.

The U Street Corridor, once referred to as “Black Broadway,” was an important African-American cultural and nightlife hub from the 1920s through the ’40s. Home to the Lincoln Theatre and Ben’s Chili Bowl, local and internationally renowned jazz greats regularly performed in the venues dotted along this strip.

Themes of several of the MuralsDC murals showcased along this corridor reflect its history as well as the current culture of the neighborhood. You will see several other murals not related to MuralsDC on your walk as well!

DC’s tallest portrait mural is a tribute to DC native Roger Wendell “Buck” Hill, who played saxophone with jazz greats, like Charlie Byrd, at night in popular U street jazz clubs while maintaining his day job as a mailman.

This was MuralsDC’s tallest mural when it was painted in 2015. Painted on the southwest wall of a senior living facility, the mural is designed to showcase the vibrance and relevancy of the senior community to the Washington, DC community.

A literal portrait of perseverance, this mural features Mr. and Mrs. William and Winifred Lee, who opened their flower shop in 1945. One of the oldest African-American owned establishments in DC and one of two of the oldest African American owned business (alongside Ben’s Chili Bowl) on the U Street corridor, Lee’s Flower and Card Shop is still owned and operated by the Lee family.

ABOUT MURALSDC

MuralsDC was created to help minimize illegal graffiti tagging, to revitalize public spaces within the community and to teach young people the art of aerosol painting. Since 2007, DPW’s MuralsDC program has created original works of art on school, municipal, business and apartment building walls in every ward of the city.

In collaboration with the Commission on the Arts and Humanities, this beautification initiative has resulted in 141 murals, employed more than 60 (mostly local) artists, prevented vandalism on buildings experiencing repeat tagging, and continues to provide ongoing opportunities for community engagement.

Alex and Iwona Petrov, principals of yZiGN Interiors renovated an Alexandria, Virginia basement, creating a personalized bourbon tasting room for the owners. As bourbon collectors who travel across the US, mainly to Kentucky and Tennessee to taste and purchase bourbon, the owners wanted a bourbon tasting room that not only reflects the ones they see on their trips, but is also unique to their style. They requested an intimate and rustic room, one that evokes a moody vibe - a room with a deep south feel with a modern twist.
