DIVERSEWORLDFASHION.COM
A
little over a year ago, shortly after becoming the newest Editor-in-Chief of DWF, I sat in Strozier Library and began to think about all of the things that I knew this publication was capable of. From a Fall issue that would be over 100 pages, to two separate versions of our first double-digit issue, I aspired to do the things that we as an organization had yet to do with a team that would be willing to push the boundaries and go the extra mile in order to achieve these goals. Somewhere between two Venti Bold coffees and a drive around campus to recollect my thoughts, I imagined how great it would be to start an online, summer version of Diverse World Fashion Magazine, as a way to highlight the fun and lightheartedness that comes along with the beaming sunny months, acting as a contrast to the more serious Fall and Spring issues. After seeing the reactions to our last issue from not only the members on my team, but, the general public as well, it only seemed right to stick with the idea and go forward in creating the first-ever Summer Edition of DWF – and here we are now, one year later. Looking back proudly on all that we have accomplished, not only in the past year - but the previous five, while simultaneously looking forward to what is next with eager anticipation, it is still quite baffling to me that our organization has grown so much and exceeded numerous expectations in such a short period of time. As the only person in this role to return back for a second year, thus far, it is both humbling and exciting to come back with new ideas and the same incredible team. The sky is truly the limit from here. Until Fall,

No matter your skin type, these lightweight cover-ups will bring life to your face, without compensating your natural beauty.

BRING ON THE CURLS
Curly haired gals often cower in fear of the humidity and heat that summer months can bring. But, fear not as Fendi’s Resort ‘18 collection embraced natural kinks and coils, pairing them with sleek, subtle outfits. Tip: Regardless of color or length, a layered cut will help your hair remain bouncy and fresh, no matter the weather!
AU NATUREL
As seen at Altuzarra’s Resort ‘18 collection, effortless strands are all the rage this summer. No matter your hairs texture or length, embracing your natural waves is a go-to staple this year. Achieve this look by combing your hair with a wide tooth comb and allowing it to air-dry. Optional: Use a pea sized amount of Moroccan oil to enhance your hairs natural shine and body.

TRENDS MOROCCANOIL, Moroccanoil Treatment, 3.4 oz $44; Nordstrom
BRING ON THE DRAMA
Channel your inner Amy Winehouse this summer season with bigger, better hair! Buns and ponytails with front poofs and half-up, half-downs with tousled manes were all the rage at Marc Jacobs’ Resort 18’ show. To achieve the sky-high look, tease sections of hair and pin them back to provide the illusion of a voluminous bun - then let the party begin!
POPPIN PASTELS
If you thought colored hair was so last season, think again! Moschino’s Resort ‘18 show featured models with lavender and light pink hair; both of which complemented the eccentric and colorful ensembles they were wearing. To dye your locks for a semi-permanent color change, mix any Kool-Aid packet with warm water and apply directly to your hair, until satisfied with the results. ISSUE 11

FOODS
FOR PRETTY
SUMMER SKIN
By: Isabela Fraiz
They say that beauty is in the bones, however, most dermatologists would argue that it is in the skin as well. Maintaining healthy skin is crucial for ensuring a well-rounded healthy lifestyle, but keeping that glowy complexion during the summer can sometimes be a challenge. The high temperatures, humidity, and sun exposure that the scorching summer months tend to bring, all take a toll on our skin. While good nutrition is something to encourage all year round, it is especially important to take into account the best foods per season. With summer being as hot and dry as it is, foods that are high in water and good fats (such as omega-3) are the best for keeping your skin nourished and hydrated - preventing it from getting over-dry and wrinkly. Keep in mind that aside from foods, drinking plenty of water is vital for upholding hydrated skin! Aim for a minimum of eight glasses per day, and choose foods that are low in sodium (a high intake will make you retain water, dehydrate faster, and end up feeling bloated).Read along to discover 8 nourishing foods that will keep your skin looking (and feeling) radiant all summer long, as well as, a few quick and easy recipes to put to the test using these ingredients!
1. POMEGRANATE Pomegranates are probably the most complete superfood for our skin. Aside from keeping it healthy and hydrated, it can also aid in treating acne. Among their most important properties, they are: (1.) Rich in punicic acid which moisturizes and soothes dry, cracked, and irritated skin (perfect for treating sunburns!) (2.) Contain omega-5 fatty acids that hydrate skin and prevent moisture loss (3.) High in antioxidants. These aid in protecting skin from free radical damage, thus helping to prevent skin cancer and reduce the signs of sun damage. (4.) Pomegranate seeds have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties that help treat skin problems like eczema and psoriasis, which often get worse during the summer months due to the heat.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
2. AVOCADO Guac lovers, rejoice! Due to their high amount of good fats, avocados are great for keeping your skin nourished and moisturized. Some of their most remarkable properties are [they]: (1.) Contain a great source of antioxidant carotenoids which provide protection from environmental damage that could lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Also, they have been said to improve skin’s density, tone, and general appearance. (2.) Full of vitamin C - this vitamin provides strong antioxidant properties and is needed for the creation of elastin and collagen, both of which maintain skin’s firmness and structure. (3.) High in monounsaturated fatty acids which maintain moisture in the epidermal layer of the skin, keeping it soft and hydrated. They also help regenerate damaged skin cells and reduce facial redness.
3. DARK CHOCOLATE Good news! A common favorite sweet item that made our list is decadent dark chocolate. Because dark chocolate has the highest amount of cocoa, it is the best variety to keep all skin types looking and feeling refreshed, as cocoa is a natural hydrating agent. Additional impressive properties are, it is: (1.) High in flavonols. These are a potent type of antioxidant, which will improve skin’s luminosity. Flavonols also improve skin’s hydration and thickness, both being key to a younger-looking complexion and appearance. (2.) Contains caffeine which may temporarily reduce skin puffiness (apply to skin for even better results!).
4. KALE No wonder kale is one of the trendiest healthy foods nowadays. Being a nutritional powerhouse and low in calories at the same time, kale provides endless benefits for our bodies. Among its top properties and nutrients for skin health are, [it]: (1.) Contains vitamin C which helps in the production of collagen and, on the contrary, the deficiency of this vitamin weakens the skin and causes tears in the collagen fibers. (2.) Antioxidant function, this provides natural protection from the sun, preventing skin damage caused by sun exposure. (3.) Packed with copper which boosts the synthesis of melanin, controls inflammation, and aids in the production of collagen, as well. (4.) Vitamin A that promotes healthy cell growth, including the cells that make up the dermis and epidermis of the skin.
5. WALNUTS Often referred to as brain-looking nuts, walnuts’ high content of omega-3 fatty acids is what places them at the top of most superfoods. Among their nutrients, they [are]: (1.) Contain a high content of alpha-linolenic acid. Its consumption can help prevent eczema, which is often associated with dry, scaly skin. (2.) Omega-3 essential fatty acids which help to improve skin’s elasticity. (3.) Loaded with copper which is a mineral that aids in collagen production, which can help improve your complexion’s texture. 6. CARROTS Remember when you were younger and adults would always insist on eating carrots if you wanted to have good eyesight? Well, this superfood helps maintain healthy skin as well. Their most skin beneficial properties are: (1.) Carrots are high in beta carotene which is an antioxidant that helps repair skin tissue and protects against the sun’s harsh rays. Beta carotene also helps the skin maintain a healthy glow and attractive skin tone. (2.) Being high in vitamin C means they help to maintain skins firmess and healthy plumped appearance.
7. YOGURT This dairy goodness is one of the best foods out there for maintaining radiant skin. Aside from being known as a cure for every possible stomach ailment, it also moisturizes and even reduces dark circles. Among its top properties are: (1.) Contains lactic acid that moisturizes skin, prevents breakouts, eliminates dead skin cells, and diminishes lines and wrinkles. (2.) Contains zinc which is a mineral that reduces swelling and redness from rashes and acne. It also helps to prevent oily skin. (3.) Yogurt is high in calcium which heals dry skin and enhances skin renewal. (4.) Vitamin B, which hydrates skin and prevents it from beoming dull over time and potentially discolored, while giving it a nice glow.
8. SALMON Last but not least, another high-fat superfood made it to our list! Wild salmon - not farm raised - is one of the best sources of good fats out there. Top properties of this powerpacked fish include: (1.) High content of omega-3 fatty acids which help keep the skin supple and moisturized, as well as can help to reduce skin inflammation. (2.) Contains selenium which is a mineral that protects the skin from sun exposure, coming in handy in the beaming summer months. (3.) Contains carotenoid antioxidants that can greatly reduce the effects of free radical damage, which causes aging. 26

THINGS TO DO IN
AND around
this
SUMMER By: Jennifer Vasbinder
Take a break from school and have some fun around town. During the summer months, it can be hard to find activities to attend, considering more than half of the students who populate it aren’t there. But, instead of sitting on your computer binging Netflix day and night, try any number of new activities- explore recreational locations and gardens, eat new foods and get creative indoors. While in Tallahassee over the summer months, take advantage of these ten fun things to do in the area, DWF approved.

1ST.. VISIT GEORGE
ISLAND Get out of town! Slightly more than one and a half hours southwest of Tallahassee, is a blissful and tranquil beach town called St. George Island. Take a mini vacation and relax on the white sandy beaches and soak in some sun. St. George Island is a favorite spot because of the quiet beaches, cute local shops, and fresh seafood. Find some fresh grilled dolphin, plump shrimp and/or a margarita, and you’ll have the day made. (850-927-7744, seestgeorgeisland.com)

2. STUDENT LIFE CINEMA
Need to get out of the sun? If you’re an FSU student you can see blockbusters, indies, and classical movies at the Student Life Cinema on campus, for free. No worries if you aren’t a student, you can still see the movie for only $5.00. The SLC plays a vast collection of films throughout the entire year, almost every day of the week, so there is bound to be something good playing. It’s a true gem of the campus for all movie lovers. Drive over to Lake Ella on any Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to enjoy live music and a delicious array of food truck options, for dinner. Bring a towel or lawn chair and chill out for the night. It’s a dog friendly event, too! The local shops are open during this time, including Big Easy Snowballs. Top food truck recommendation, for anyone with a sweet tooth, is the fresh baked cupcakes from Lucy & Leo’s Cupcakery. They are mouth watering! (850-606-2305, visittallahassee.com) ISSUE 11

4. THE
RESERVATION
AT FSU
Florida State students, take advantage of The Rez and their free student activities. Try canoeing or paddle boarding out on Lake Bradford or take a dip and cool down in the lifeguarded lake. If you’re not a fan of the water, play a game of sand volleyball or climb their 40-foot climbing wall. Finish off the day with sunset yoga. You could spend a whole day here and never get bored. (850-644-6892, campusrec.fsu.edu)
If there is one thing Collegetown does well, it’s the themed trivia nights at Madison Social and Brasstap. With fan favorites like Harry Potter, Parks and Recreation, and Disney movies, each month there will likely be a popular theme to peak your interest. Trivia night is a fun way to test your knowledge on your favorite films and television shows.
6. EXPLORE
THE MENU
at TOWNSHIP Tired of the same old foods? Try something new at Township, perfectly located on Madison Street. Brunch lovers can enjoy avocado toast or Nutella stuffed, Captain Crunch French toast. Beer enthusiasts can choose from a variety of over 90 IPA drafts on tap. Also, if you’re into foreign cuisine, you can try out some of their more traditional German dishes, like Bratwurst and Kielbasa, or a crowd favorite, soft pretzels. With meat lover and vegetarian options, this is the perfect place for everyone. (850-597-8075, townshiptlh.com) 60

7. TOUR 8. PAINTING 9NIGHTS .TUESDAYat THE STATE with a twist
CAPITOL
Before graduating and leaving Tallahassee, take a tour of the Capitol Building. Free and indoors, one can take a self-guided tour. Throughout the walk through, you will learn about the history of the building, which was established as Florida’s Capitol in 1824. The building is open for tours Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Looking for a girl’s night out? Painting with a Twist offers a fun night of step-by-step painting. The twist is, its BYOB. If you’re 21 and over, bring your favorite beverage of choice to sip while you create a new masterpiece. Each night features a different design, so look ahead on their website. A two-hour session, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. costs $35.00. It might be a little pricey, but you get to go home with new house décor.

RECESS Atop Madison Social, the nightclub and bar Recess is THE place to be for a good time, especially on a Tuesday night. With pulsing music and delicious cocktails, this rooftop bar with a pool deck is the perfect summertime party spot. But, you probably already knew that. *Time (and money) saving tip: Get pre-banded earlier than you plan on arriving to avoid costs and lines. (850-570-8535, fsucollegetown.net)
10.FIRST FRIDAY at railroad square Every first Friday of the month, Railroad Square keeps it’s shop’s doors open from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., for thousands of locals to peruse the shops, enjoy live music throughout the park, and eat from local food trucks. A monthly pleasure of mine is browsing through the many old vintage shops and finding treasures during these hours. Many of the art galleries stay open through the event, sometimes offering free snacks and drinks for visitors. On your way in or out, stop for a cup of delicious coffee, from Black Dog Café. You never know what interesting events you’ll find during these 3 hours. (www.railroadsquare.com) ISSUE 11
